Senior Bowl Weigh-in Thoughts
Hey guys,
I'm about to head to the first South team practice (which hopefully they get in since its been raining most of the day), but I wanted to give you some thoughts from the weigh-in. You can read my full blog on it here.
Initial Thoughts:
Nick Foles looked very impressive, def. has the size you love seeing in a QB, and Weeden was right behind him. Kellen Moore and Russell Wilson weren't impressive at all and being firmly under 6'0" should really shoot down their draft status.
Wide receiver position is very impressive here. A lot of big frame guys with real nice size and arm length. There are going to be a lot of good mid-late round values in this draft class at the WR position. Jeff Fuller and Brian Quick were the most impressive, but they had quite a bit of competition.
I'll go into O-line and defenders later, but just wanted to give you guys a quick outlook.

Rained out from work today
Really looking forward to practice on nfl network at 4.
Jeff Fuller is intriguing
I watched the A&M bowl game to get a look at Tannehill, but came away impressed by Fuller. He’s a man among boys.
I came away from that bowl game thinking the same thing...
my only concern with him is his speed. When a guy, so obviously size advantaged, takes advantage of guys who probably will not be drafted or drafted later, there is a little excitment I withold, due to the increase in talent in NFL.
But he is intriguing…
Fuller looked really impressive today, pretty quick in and out of his breaks

What round do you think he has value in?
Think we’d have to spend a third on him? Not sure if I like him for us at higher than a 4th.
i'd say he's an late 3rd or early 4th, but a strong week here could push him firmly in the third. I haven't gotten to talk to him, but the buzz here is that with the measurements that came in today and likely a strong interview will move his stock up
I probably focused on receivers the least today, focusing mainly on the O-line, D-line and QB’s, but what I saw from Fuller I really liked. Good hands, clean routes, created some separation, adjusted to the ball. Def. a lot of promise. If he keeps it up, then he could move up to where our 3rd would be. The good news for us, bad for him, is this WR class is pretty impressive. I mean none of what is considered the top 6 guys (Blackmon, Jeffery, Randle and Sanu are juniors, while Wright and Toon had to pull out) are here, yet I’ve been impressed by what I’ve seen so far. Even with a great week it will be tough for Fuller to crack the 2nd round.

what did you think of Dwight Jones from UNC??
and did any OL standout ?
by Highspeed30 on Jan 23, 2012 11:19 PM EST up reply actions
I thought Jones was impressive as well really good size and frame, nice long arms
The South offensive line disappointed me somewhat today. Now in fairness they went up against an incredible group of pass rushers (Ingram, Coples and Upshaw), but I expected more out of them. Cordy Glenn actually was probably the best of the bunch and that was at tackle (many think he’ll need to move into guard).

I like Brian Quick and Marvin McNutt,
I am hearing McNutt is a late 3rd or 4th rd guy, and Quick a solid 3rd rd guy and may creep up into the 2nd. I would love for the Skins to grab one of these guys, I think Jones will be gone by the 3rd but Fuller, Quick or McNutt may be availabe in the 3rd.

big fan of both of those guys as well
it’s because of that level of depth that I really don’t think the Skins should target a WR in the first.
Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com
I agree with you about this
unless we miss on a QB, and somehow Blackmon were to fall into our laps. I think the depth at WR is OK. The elites are very few however.
R.I.P JVP 1926-2012
i agree as well
I think some of these guys can develop into #1 type of receivers depending on their attitude, work habits and where they end up. I think it is easier in general to find a receiver in later rounds to blossom than a QB

Nick Foles
Reading a lot of good information on Foles, is he a QB who can move not only into the first round but possibly be graded as a top-10 pick.?
A lot of people are.....
considering Tannehill and Foles as interchangeable….one or the other is the other 1st round QB. Tannehill has more raw talent, but Foles is much more polished.
Can we please get a mother f***ing QB we can be proud of?!?!?!?!?!?!
i don't think he'll move into the top 10 range, but late first is possible
Foles looked good today and should it looked like he impressed the Redskins coaches at times
Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com
Steve!
Tell me you snapped a pic of Nick Foles stretching. (Fingers crossed.)
I see it as more cushion for the pushin'
North team's practice is on NFL Network right now
with the Vikes coaches running the show
Hail to 'Em
scrath that, it was on until 5

Tell you what... if WR Blackmon is there... I would grab him. OT in the 2nd, and QB Wheeden in the 3rd.
I know he’s old… but… he’s good… he’ll buy us time… we can grab a developmental QB in a later rd…. or… go for Barkley next year.
Wheeden to Blackmon in Burgundy and Gold!!!! One can only dream!
i got to talk to Weeden some, and I'll tell you he is very impressive i'll have plenty more throughout the week, but I really like Weeden's dmeanor
Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com
you def. saw the difference in maturity especially since he was dealing with more reporters than anyone
but yeah he was just very easy to talk to, and really intelligent.
Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com
are you basing your thoughts on wilson
because of his height ? because i saw him do some good things on nfl network
i am glad you liked foles . i saw him in college a lot and he does have some tools
now i didn't watch the North practice today since i had to choose between the two
but Wilson just didn’t look impressive at the Weigh-in. He just looks small (and is small)

i'll tell you what he's moving up. A lot of buzz around him down here. I used to say he was a top 40 pick who might sneak in around 25, i think his stock is rising that he could be off the board by then

Only problem is
when you put the tape on, the guy is wildly innconsistant. Definitly more of a RT than a LT
R.I.P JVP 1926-2012
i get my first chance to see Adams in action today so i'm pretty excited
but the early reports were glowing to say the least
Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com
Yeah
definitly give us a report on him. The D-end class is a little weak this year. However, he could get some good one-on-one battles with guys like Devon Still.
R.I.P JVP 1926-2012
Still had to pull out of the Senior Bowl
the D-line prospects aren’t as good on the North roster, but Adams is impressive. South roster D-line boasts Upshaw, Ingram, Coples and B. Thompson all looked real good yesterday.
Here’s my initial south notes: http://fanspeak.com/nfldraft/2012/01/24/senior-bowl-south-team-monday-practice-report/

I'm still a bigger fan of Nate Potter in the 2nd
I think he’s a better fit for us at RT. Reminds me of Solder up in NE.
R.I.P JVP 1926-2012
Adams looked awesome at the weigh in, even last night in regular clothes he looked impressive
i didn’t watch the North practice today, but from bloggers i talked to who were there, they said he was one of the most impressive players on the North team

Steve
If you can, can you give an update on Criner(especially how his long speed, and quick twitch coming out of breaks looks), and maybe get an interview.
Also, what about Sanders. I heard he put some weight on, and looks good.
If not too much to ask, how about a little on my boy Ben Jones. I heard is came in at a little under 6’ 3", and was 304 I think. I know he is not facing the best D-linemen the senior bowl has ever seen , but see if he is holding his own in practice.
Thanks buddy.
R.I.P JVP 1926-2012
I could possibly live with
A trade back in the 1st to gain an extra 2nd. Then take Kontz in the 1st, Foles and Potter in the 2nd, Weeden in the 3rd, and Criner in the 4th.
R.I.P JVP 1926-2012
Funny was doing my own little mock last night
Did the exact same thing for the first 3 picks. traded down and went
1. Kontz
2. Foles,
2. Potter
3. (I went Fuller with in the 3rd rd)
When I was a kid, my father told me, "Never hit anyone in anger, unless you're absolutely sure you can get away with it." -Russell Ziskey
It could be an option
I would however, like 2 QB to compete with one another. The Weeden/Foles combo would be interesting to say the least.
Also, I could live with Fuller. He is a nice prospect. Potter I absolutely love. Still like Adcock too.
R.I.P JVP 1926-2012
I like Adcock
and Sanders as well. I did not think Sanders would be there for the second 2nd rd pick (if we did end up trading down).
I’d be fine with taking 2 QBs. If the Scenerio ends up being that we do not land Griffin-I’m really starting to like your idea of Stanton. There is not that much video of him on youtube (nor do I consider myself expert enough to judge his mechanics) but I liked what I saw from time at Michigan State and the Lions. He has good mobility which I did not realize. Instead of Weeden I might be tempted to take a guy like like Coleman and Harnish in the later rds.

very disappointed that Adcock had to pull out of the Senior Bowl, i really wanted to see him upclose

That would suit me.
Still like Flynn at 3 years, $24mil (15mil guaranteed) type contract, which is the sort of thing I’ve been reading is in the likely range for him. But I like Foles if he doesn’t have to start day one, and that Flynn contract makes him easy to trade on or easy to cut if Foles blows up early.

i'm working on my day one practice notes right now
but here is part two of my weigh-in impressions http://fanspeak.com/nfldraft/2012/01/24/senior-bowl-weigh-in-thoughts-and-impressions-part-2/
as a preview: Criner got in and out of his breaks really fluidly, but he didn’t seem to have great deep speed. Now in fairness the field was really wet so players might not have been at 100% speed at all times.
Sanders looks the part, though he struggled some. He does have some tough DE match-ups down here, but still it wasn’t great. Jones wasn’t as impressive as I was hoping for. Best Center on the South squad, but looked roughly the same as Phillip Blake, who should go about 3-4 rounds later.
Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com
Criner intrigues me
especially with those size 10 1/2 inch hands. Reminds me a bit of Colston.
R.I.P JVP 1926-2012
Criner doesn't have the height or Bulk of Colston, in fact he reminds me more of Devin Thomas (in his build)
but those mitts are impressive, made some nice hand catches yesterday.

Devin Thomas Comparison
Please use some other name, any other name for comparison’s sake. DT just makes everyone cringe and stop reading

i know haha but very similar body type
WR’s down here are looking very impressive, lot of talent for the Skins to pick from.
Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com
Do you think Jones' size could help him in our system
on fils he looks to have pretty good feet, and I know he can play both G and C.
R.I.P JVP 1926-2012
I am not that high on Criner
to me he does not play his size, I dont really see him using his size advantage and he dont seem that physical. but his speed is ok for his size and he seem to be quick at times but just not electric fast.
Love Fuller
Was really impressed with him. It would be great if we could grab him with the first pick in the 4th- but I dont see him lasting him that long. To bad, Tannehill could not be there
When I was a kid, my father told me, "Never hit anyone in anger, unless you're absolutely sure you can get away with it." -Russell Ziskey
For Tannehill
it may actually turn out better that he’s not here. He may have easily been overshadowed by Weeden and Foles, who by many accounts, have looked impressive.
To me, Tannehill is a poor mans Jake Locker
R.I.P JVP 1926-2012
I think Foles is going to be the
guy if Shanny decides not to trade up and RGIII is taken before the 6th pick
When I was a kid, my father told me, "Never hit anyone in anger, unless you're absolutely sure you can get away with it." -Russell Ziskey
If that is the case
I agree with you.
I don’t know about you, but I like Foles a lot better than I did Campbell when we drafted him.
R.I.P JVP 1926-2012
both Foles and Weeden were impressive, but I think Tannehill would have been right there with them
huge difference between the South team QB’s and the North Team

I've been a glass half full guy my whole life
I just realized though that the glass wasn’t half full at all. It was one of these cups
and the cup was really empty all along.
A fan of losers, Redskins, Wizards, Orioles, Terps, Dale Jr, America
this could be a really big year for the skins, have both money and draft picks this year with a really strong FA class, and pretty strong draft class
i say have faith, and just pray we don’t screw it up.
Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com
these cups are actually nice
oddly enough I have a redskins cup like this.

Steve, any thoughts
on any of the ILBs (Cole, Acho, etc). Also, have you seen Rainey yet?

ups, sorry- your doing D later
When I was a kid, my father told me, "Never hit anyone in anger, unless you're absolutely sure you can get away with it." -Russell Ziskey
haven't focused as much on the LB's yet, though have noticed good things in the 7 on 7's and team scrimmages
Here’s my latest post on the North practice http://fanspeak.com/nfldraft/2012/01/24/senior-bowl-day-two-north-practice-quick-thoughts/, i’ll have others up later tonight, that you can find on my SB or Draft blog page as well as others from yesterday.
Cole definitely looks the part that is for sure and he moves well. Acho breaks down well and squares up on the ball carrier. They were working Rainey at both RB and WR today, and I thought he looked good.
