Redskins Linebacker Coach Lou Spanos To Be Hired As UCLA Defensive Coordinator

ESPN980 just tweeted about an LA Times story that says Redskins linebacker coach Lou Spanos will be hired as the UCLA defensive coordinator.

The LA Times is reporting that Redskins linebackers coach Lou Spanos is going to be hired as the defensive coordinator at UCLA.

Spanos was hired by the Redskins in 2009 by Head Coach Mike Shanahan to help defensive coordinator Jim Haslett install a 3-4 defensive scheme, similar to the one Spanos was used to in Pittsburgh. With the way Ryan Kerrigan, Brian Orakpo and Perry Riley have come along this season, he was obviously doing a good job here and will be missed.

I really hope we can find a place for London on the staff.

He’ll be a great coach when he retires in six years.

Congrats to Lou, but that is a body blow for the Skins

especially as we are trying to get the staff ready to coach the Senior Bowl.

Really, what do we think will happen there?

I suppose the linebackers will be coached by Hazlitt.
But what about the wide receivers? Kyle?

my guess is offensive assisstant Mike Mcdaniels would coach the WR's

he’s never been a WR coach, but he has worked with WR’s before while in Houston.

as for the LB’s I don’t know, if they hire someone quickly then maybe they can just jump in.

This sucks

BIG TIME. Wasn’t Spanos the only guy who came from an actual GOOD defense? Getting him was the only reason I was OK getting rid of Olivodatti.

Where do they teach you to talk like this? In some Panama City "Sailor wanna hump-hump" bar, or is it getaway day and your last shot at his whiskey? Sell crazy someplace else, we're all stocked up here.

Not at all pleased with this turn of events.....

but, as mentioned above, good for him.

Maybe now

Sir London Of Fletcher can become a player/coach hybrid

I've always wondered:

How much does a position coach offer in terms of molding players. Would it be as devastating to you guys if the WR or TE coach left? Hopefully the new coach can teach Orakpo how to show up for NFC East games or how not to over pursue and run himself out of position.

by Elaw6 on Jan 17, 2012 7:03 PM EST reply actions

The WR coach is already gone.

Personally, I think the loss of Spanos is huge. Leave Orakpo alone at least he over pursues and doesn’t under pursue. He’s trying to make plays and thats exactly what the team needs.

Better over than Under, I agree

But he shouldn’t be left alone. Making all that money and that draft position, is it too much to ask he sacks Romo, Manning, or Vick? You know he hasn’t don’t that yet right?

by Elaw6 on Jan 17, 2012 7:20 PM EST up reply actions

Wrong

He got Manning.

Also, got Vick...

…twice in the last game of the year before getting his shoulder hurt. Better late than never, but definitely living up to his draft position…IMO

For sure

I feel like everyone is just piling on Orakpo now that Kerrigan is on the scene and had a great season

Also got the holding call...

that was the deciding play of a Dallas game a year ago, which is basically like sacking Romo.

The position coaches

Work closer with players than anyone.

I'm going to take a different approach here..

So long farwell and thanks for all the shoes.

Who couldn’t coach Kerrigan, Orakpo, Fletch and then insert any name (although Riley is peach).

He was a good coach for us. Kerrigan made the leap to the 3-4 too damn fast. You’ve got to give him credit for that.

Too many changes in the coaching staff, that worries me a little bit.

This does suck and who says Orakpo and Kerrigan produce at the levels they are without him

Hopefully they can get someone good to replace him and glad to see him get the opportunity. Perhaps we will say him down the road in the NFL as a D Coordinator. Hard to not like seeing our assistants get some love.

I'm sure we can poach a coach from either the Steelers or GB

Dan Snyder has money at his disposal and by god, he’ll dispose of it.
