Manning a Redskin??

A source from ESPN that is apparently very trust worthy to Bram Weinstein thinks so!

http://bostinno.com/2012/01/13/could-peyton-manning-be-headed-to-the-washington-redskins/

If the Redskins were able to pick up both Manning and Saturday, draft a QB in the third or fourth round, say Cousins, Foles, Tannehill, etc., would you be ok with it? They could use some of the other picks to solidify the line, and grab a big time receiver in FA. The QB we draft can sit behind Peyton for a couple years and learn, like Rodgers did at Green Bay. I think it's a win win situation, as long as Peyton is healthy, and we don't have to give up a ton of draft picks.

Yeah, I agree

and I’m still not totally sure I would do it, but it’s intriguing, especially if Manning is at least 90% healthy.

I tend to agree with everything you are saying

but IF we were able to get a QB that we thought would be the QB of the future in two years or so, and we don’t mortgage the future, I don’t think it could be the worst possible move for the franchise. We already accomplished that with Fat Albert!!

by tmarine17 on Jan 13, 2012 12:59 PM EST up reply actions

Getting Manning is going to require a lot. I rather spend double on a draft prospect, than what it would take to bring Manning to DC for 2-3 years.

Maybe

but who knows. That’s why I say only if we don’t mortgage the future. Maybe they are willing to take a pick or two, and a player.. Like I said, just saw this out there and figured I would put on the site to see how many people would yell at me.

by tmarine17 on Jan 13, 2012 1:05 PM EST up reply actions

Not that people would yell at you

I just think most feel we need youth and change, and that needs to start with the most important position on our team; QB.

At this point, I don’t think I’d even want Tom Brady. I want youth, and our own draft prospect to develop.

Oh, believe me

I have been watching this team for a long time and I have been preaching that we need to build through the draft, and get young, for a while now, but at the same time, I don’’t think we can get Luck or RGIII, and the other guys left would be drafted after the first round anyway, so if we don’t have to give up much, and he’s healthy, I don’t think it would be a horrible thing to do. I think it’s a long shot, but it’s worth a look. Plus, I remember trying to build for the future at QB a long time ago with a young guy, and look how that turned out.

by tmarine17 on Jan 13, 2012 1:21 PM EST up reply actions

He'd be a free agent

and could hardly get the salary he is getting in Indy. But maybe too much. There are better options, I think. But the Jets took Favre…

I'd love it if Larry Michael...

Oh absolutely

Thats what everyone would think and you can’t blam them. Part of me would too, but like I have said, if we didn’t mortgage the future for him, and we knew for sure he’s healthy, it’s breaking Peyton Manning! You telling me you wouldn’t want him on your team?

Yes Tmarine

Why dont we do that. Lets not change a standing tradition that has lasted 20 years. we will continue to be a below 500 team. Manning would last 2 maybe 3 games before sitting in the hospital with a broken BODY!!!!!!

by vjessejamesv on Jan 13, 2012 1:00 PM EST reply actions

You might be right

but I’m just throwing it out there to see what people think. Also, I would never do this if we can’t prove that Manning is healthy enough to play for at least 2 more seasons.

by tmarine17 on Jan 13, 2012 1:02 PM EST up reply actions

I would never do it

Healthy or not. Now, if this came up 5-6 years ago, I prob have a different opinion.

I honestly, and I’m not kidding about saying this, this this would be the Worst move for this team……………even worse than the McNabb trade.

We need to build, and we have to do it correctly. Manning is not a guy we can build around anymore. He would be a fit for a team like the Jets, or even Cowboys, who have pieces around him, and can win right now with him. We are not the Jets.

no thanks been there done that

unless they relese him and we pick him up as a free agent. but why would he wanna come here he’s got plenty of money already if they trade him it will probally be to the nfc but if they cut him hes going to try and win a superbowl i could see him going to the jets/fins/49rs.unless he just want to play eli twice a year

by taylor21 on Jan 13, 2012 1:13 PM EST reply actions

For this to even be feasible, it would hinge on a couple major things

1. Manning being healthy enough to play….there seems to be no guarantee of that

2. Would he even want to play for another team?….I think he stated he wouldnt play in the same divsion as Eli

3. The cost of the trade…..giving up even 2 high picks for a 36 year old injured QB is bad business

4. The cost of his contract….does the franchise want to pay him $28 million?

I’m hoping this is an easy decision by Bruce and Mike. Unless he’s totally healthy, hungry to play, and comes relatively cheap….just say NO

by StephanHart on Jan 13, 2012 2:04 PM EST reply actions

SURE WHY NOT GET MANNING

Just what our team needs is to be set back for another good 20 years , thats the way i want our team to go . While we are at it why dont we trade all of our good young players for old washed up guys and over pay them as well . ( NOT) IF THAT GET MANNING i will burn every jersey i have . We have to go youth not risk everything on a broken down QB in manning , if he takes one good hit with his neck he will be outa there so fast you could not spin yopur head . Why risk such a stupid ass move like that and set our team back for years on end . We need to just move up for this one time in our life and pick a solid good QB that will lead our team because we might not be in this position again for awhile to snag such a good QB , why take a risk on a broken down QB . If the colts let him go why do you think they are doing that for hmmmm ? because they know he will only be around for only a fewmore years tops and thats if he dont get hurt with his neck again . Or what happens if manning plays one year then decide to retire , then we lose a draft pick because of that which we could have used to pick up RG3 . NO THANKS NOT WORTH THE RISK.

by washingtonwin on Jan 13, 2012 2:15 PM EST reply actions

No way-

I’d give up draft picks for him- Too much rebuilding to do on our roster to make that sacrifice. In any event, my feeling is the colts will not give him his bonus and he will be a free agent- so why trade for him. I had originally thought he might be worth bringing in as a FA, but I have growing concerns about how well he would mesh with Kyle & Mike.

I think we are better off going with a lower risk/ cost veteran such as Orton/Campbell and a 2nd rd pick (assuming RGII is gone when we draft) such as Foles/Tannehill.

no argument here

and agree, it’s a long shot that he would end up here, but there are not many places where he would get a chance to start, and from our perspective there are not many veteran FA available.

Right but...There would have to be craziness on both sides.

JC would have to be crazy enough to come back here an get paid less than he did before as a bridge starter.

And Shanny would have to want a QB who he already didn’t want 2 years ago to come play for him

by StephanHart on Jan 13, 2012 3:28 PM EST up reply actions

Yep agreed

But at the end of the day, we will need an experienced caretaker (unless we do the Flynn thing). Whose out there? Grossman, Orton (maybe Cassel if KC decides to keep Orton)

And from Campbell’s perspective, there are not that many places were he would have a chance to start.

Flynn would

probably #4 or #5 on the potencial list of solutions to get a QB. Perfect scenerio for me is to sign Orton as a FA and draft Griffin at 6.

this would not be my first choice...

but I would prefer it over Matt Flynn. At least I would know what I was getting with Manning.

IF it happens, it would tell me that Manning’s health is fine, and we would protect ourselves with a QB in a lower round (or next year’s crop). It would also tell me that the Shanny’s would be willing to adjust their offense to accomodate Manning.

Ideal, HARDLY!!!! Better than what we have now, definitely.

by jgibbsfan1 on Jan 13, 2012 4:10 PM EST reply actions

Apart of me says no, it's not worth it

Another part says it is very tempting.
If we were to do this, my mindset wouldn’t be ‘yes, we can win now!’ But rather, we won’t have to throw our rookie (who I’d still expect them to draft) to the wolves right away. I like the idea of a Ryan Tannehill, Nick Foles or Tyler Wilson riding the bench for a season or two before they’re handed the reigns, isn’t that everybody’s perfect scenario?
Obviously it’s a situation of can the dude play? Personally, if he’s released, I don’t know why he’d want to come here versus a more established contender, but if so, a part of likes the idea of him holding down the fort.
If he does, they better beef up that line freaking fast.
I still project our draft to go something like this (at least my personal preferences), regardless of if he comes or doesn’t:
Rd 1 – QB
Rd 2 – OL/WR
or
Rd 1 – CB/OT
Rd 2 – QB

^ That being said

If they signed him with the clear intention of making a run now with what still is a hollow offense and hole filled secondary, and didn’t pursuit their own guy of the future in the draft, then I’d be irate.

A prominent HH author believes that the Colts are going to trade the number 1 pick,

for more picks and continue to ride the Manning horse if he is in fact healthy…

by Obey on Jan 13, 2012 6:29 PM EST reply actions

I said the same thing, but the HH author told me otherwise...

he said something along the lines of how Manning is like a son and they would never do something like that to him…blah blah blah.

I mean how much more can you get/want out of Manning.

by Obey on Jan 14, 2012 4:01 PM EST up reply actions

I remember a recent column quoting Irsay as being very strong on Manning

basically, “if he’s healthy, he’ll be here”. I also read an article about the Polians having close ties to Andrew Luck – and then Polian was fired. I don’t know what it means, if anything. But it would not seem to be totally impossible that they might stick with Manning, trade the #1 pick, and possibly take some other QB in a lower round. But there is a lot of misinformation and disinformation going around.

All these “new QB” discussions are a bit repetitive, but at least they are hopeful and forward thinking. Taking on a broke-neck, aging, expensive QB does absolutely NOTHING for us!

We dont want Peyton. We want crap like Campbell, Ortin, Tannehill or other SUCKY 2nd Tier Crap thats out there.

I would take him for a 3rd and 5th rounder, nothing more.

It would be nice to have him tutoring our QB of the future that we pick up in the 2nd round. If healthy, he would definitely make us competitive. The Skins vs Giants games would be really fun to watch. I would be willing to go for it, as long as the price is right and we still commit to grooming a young QB.

by Sevendust34 on Jan 14, 2012 11:57 AM EST reply actions

There is not gonna be a market for him

Cause he will be released or the Colts will keep him, nobody is gonna pay the contract he just signed they owe him a 28 million dollar roster bonus in march and if they cut him before then, he will be free agent, so nobody is gonna trade anything for him

by Highspeed30 on Jan 14, 2012 12:13 PM EST reply actions

Would love to see what he could do, but I'm thinking Manning + Shanahan would not be a good match

One of the local DC sportscasters made a good point this evening. Basically he said that Manning’s style of play would never fit with Shanahan’s offensive plans. How often do you see Manning call an audible? Almost every play, right? He breaks the huddle, walks up to the line, scans the defense, changes the play according to what he sees, and bingo, another TD for the Colts. Now, how many times during the past season did you see a Redskins QB change the play at the line? I wasn’t really counting; it probably happened a handful of times, but not very often. That’s because Shanahan does not give his QB’s anywhere near as much latitude as Manning has in Indy. Unless Shanahan would be willing to concede on-field control of the offense to Manning, it would just be another battle of wills between coach and quarterback, a la Shanahan vs. McNabb.

Then of course there are other things to worry about. How much would he cost? Is he physically capable of getting back to his previous performance level? Would he be happy playing for the Skins?

A lot of concerns would come with Manning putting on burgundy and gold. I can almost picture another Brett Favre scenario — “Legendary Quarterback Tries to Revive Career — Again… and Again… and Again…”

But then, I think if there’s a snowflake’s chance in hell that he can get our team into a game in January, I say what the hell — give him a shot!

by pat21784 on Jan 15, 2012 1:55 AM EST reply actions

No way he comes to Eli’s division which saves us because I do think the Redskins would be stupid enough to try it.

I’ve been saying this for a month now. SNyder cares about jer$ey sales and $$$$$$$$$. Not wins

by Elaw6 on Jan 17, 2012 7:35 PM EST reply actions

That's simply not true

Snyder is both a talented marketer and an avid fan. He understands what it takes to market a product and make money off of it, but he has said himself that he is the biggest Redskins fan in the world. There’s nothing he wants more to win.

While his actions in the past were not the best for building a solid football team, he has always demonstrated that he will do whatever it takes to win.
