Free Agency
Shannahan said he likes to target guys who are 25-28 who are still hungry. He are some I have found that might fit that. 1. Brent Grimes CB Atl 2. Demetrius Bell T Buff 3. Dwayne Bowe 4. Ben Grubs G Bmore 5. Carl Nicks G NO 6. Chris Myers C Hou.
Dont know a lot about all of them so figured through discussion we can learn about the players that fit what Shannahan is looking for.

In what way?
You couldnt be more wrong. Cerrato went after every washed up big name over 30 these are all guys like Bowen and Cofeild that are young and still hungry.

This is just the newest set of "toys"
If it were earlier “1 Haynesworth DT Tenn” would have appeared on the list
when the top free agent list is put up for discussion I realize we havent learned yet

I don't think this is the case at all
He’s advocating signing a few younger FA’s, who still have a bunch of good prime years ahead of them.
It’s not as if he said, let’s sign all of these players, or, let’s sign these guys to max contracts like we did with Haynesworth.
As Bruce and Mike showed last offseason, it is possiblefor them to execute FA signings that are valuable, reasonable, and very helpful to the building of a successful team.
+1
Even if you take out the extremes: Atogwe needs to get healthy and has to prove a lot next year, and London might be the best FA his team has ever signed…
The others were solid, salary friendly, good value pickups
I think/ hope they will go after Nicks or Grubbs hard
Grimes- only if they cut Hall
Maybe Myers, although I think Shanny going center in the draft
I dont Bowe would be his 1st choice at WR
When I was a kid, my father told me, "Never hit anyone in anger, unless you're absolutely sure you can get away with it." -Russell Ziskey
I love Brent Grimes, but I think there is a better chance of Drew Brees being available than Brent Grimes
One thing to remember about Myers (outside of the fact that he is awesome) is that Old Shanny drafted him, and young Shanny coached him in Hou. There is not a guy who fits our system better than Chris Myers. He is older (he’s 30 right now), but I would totally sign him.
Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com
I'd rather go young at C
even Kontz in the 2nd, if we nab out QB in the 1st. If not, target Molk or Jones.
Center is such a huge piece of an offense. Let’s get a 10 year guy in the draft, instead of another rotating piece.
Crying Lion
Konz will be long gone by our 2nd rounder and Jones might not last to the 3rd
Myers is so underrated it’s not funny and if we were running a power scheme no way we should consider him, but a huge reason why that Houston offense does so well, regardless of the back is Myers.
Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com
If Kontz goes first
I predict it will be late first. So maybe we could move up for him if that’s the case.
Crying Lion
Myers would be a great pick-up
Even though Montgomery was an upgrade this year over what we had I dont believe he is in the same class as Myers. Myers is a perfect fit for us and I believe is one of the top 10 centers in the league. However, I don’t believe Houston would let him go. I think they resign him before he hits free agency.
This would allow Montgomery to compete with Licht at guard too.
Don't cut Hall
Package him with picks to trade up with the Rams. Say what you want about him, but for a team with NO CB’s, he would be a commodity of great value. Then bring in Grimes and/or Cortland F.
Redskins @RGIII - 2012
If you are the Rams why don't you just sign the best FA corner available
instead of paying Hall $13.5 million over the next two years.
Honestly I don’t think the Skins could get more than 5th rounder for Hall.
Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com
I'd be happy with a 5th rounder.
No such thing as throw-away picks. Bring in another Riley or Gomes.

do you even look at the contract?
the salary alone would kill that , cutting hall would cost us 600,000 in the release fee so now is the time
Hall packaged with anything would provide less value to the acquiring team.
@Callahan_9 on the twitter machine.
The Browns have a much bigger nest egg to catch free agents, and they stated that this year, they are going to go after them. I wouldn’t be suprised to see Grubbs Bowe, and one of the Jacksons (Vincent or Desean). Shanny & Holmgren need to get together and make a deal for RGIII…

I think we trade up to get RG3
So free agency is gonna be important. Think we give up this years and next years 1sts and 2nd next year. Maybe one of our 4ths this year. Shannahan has said he likes guys 25-28 who are still hungry and have something to prove. So we should be able to get a jump who the guys who might end up here. makes it easier to narrow it down.
I WILL SAY IT AGAIN
Build from the draft stop wasting money on FAs , all they are looking for is a big paycheck and then pull a albert haynesworth . Shannys doing the right thing now UNLIKE all the other coaches we have had in the past except for gibbs . We need to focus on building from the draft thats how you win games . It might be ok to get 1 or 2 players from FAs as long as we pay a decent price for them and not overpay for a bum . So far shannys been doing the right thing lets not rock the boat . Do the draft all the way .
thats fine BUT
you have to get from FA too with a team with this many holes. besides these young guys do get older too and they become FA also in 4 or so years. so its best to build a team as fast as u can in a 4 year time frame.

You never said it before did you?
by kevinjames73 on Jan 12, 2012 8:35 PM EST up reply actions
I agree
but this year we can’t fill all the holes through the draft. We’ll need to bring in at least 4-5 guys via FA. hopefully, 2 years down the road we will be able to depend on the draft a bit more and FA less. But Im with you, lets keep those picks and build a godd young team

I wish people would use this thread for what it is…to talk about the free agents out there that could meet that Cofeild and Bowen molds. Not tell everyone what you think the team should do and how the team should be run. Because we ALL know your the greatest GM that never got a shot.

I think Grubbs and Myers are the most likely targets of the guys you mentioned
Grubbs was coached by our O-line coach in B-more. And Myers was originally drafted by Shanny, and has spent his entire career in a ZBS system.

according to ProfootballFocus...
Nicks and Myers were some of the highest rated FA available, with each scoring a rating over 25. Grubbs scored a 7.8. The only OG rating higher than Nicks was Evan Mathis, from Philly, a 6-5 305# guard, who we may want to take a look at (perhaps taking away talent from a division foe), though he is 4 yrs older than Nicks but maybe cheaper.
I would be ecstatic if we were to get Nicks AND Myers. Not only an improved OL, but improved depth (Licht, Monty, Hurt).
Count me as one of those on the Myers bandwagon.
Ben Grubs G Baltimore
Ben Grubbs was selected in the first round (29th overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft.

He or Nicks would be a great addition
I think nicks might be easier to pry away because NO seems to have a lot FA on their own team (including Brees) they will need to resign.
When I was a kid, my father told me, "Never hit anyone in anger, unless you're absolutely sure you can get away with it." -Russell Ziskey
agree, but if Brees signs before gettting franchised Nicks might get the tag
the Ravens i think are less likely to franchise Grubbs, and they have a bunch of free agents as well. So i think he might be more likely.

Do they both currently play RG for their respective teams? They could both shift to LG I assume.

both play LG currently
Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com
How could the Saints afford that?
They already have the highest paid G, and one of the highest paid tackles in the game. Brees will command BIG money, and they also have Colston and Meachum to worry about. The cap would have to break somewhere right?
It just doesn’t seem plausable to have one of the leagues highest paid QB’s(which is what he will be), 3 of the leagues highest paid linemen, and whatever else they have.
Crying Lion
I think New Orleans will keep their guards
and let one or two of the wide receivers walk is one of them doesn’t give them a home team discount.
We drew’s size, the interior line is very important for New Orleans

They'd be smart to keep them
just don’t know if they can afford that much on one part of their football team.
Crying Lion
I doubt they have a choice
& Nicks signed a one year deal last year when he was a RFA. It was a relatively inexpensive contract for the Saints (around 4 mill.) but I think there is a good chance that the Saints will allow him to become an UFA.
You guys are forgeting our scheme..
Does a 6’5 350LB guard fit our ZBS?
@Callahan_9 on the twitter machine.
I dont think the Saints can afford it
I agree ENsDad27, I dont think the Saints can afford to pay Nicks. He did have an amazing year but I cant see the Saints having the two highest paid guards in the league. I think he will command the same type of money Evans got and I think that will just be too much money tied up into guards for the Saints to do it. I think they allow Nicks to become an UFA.
highest paid tackles?
Bushrod makes only a couple million a year, and Brown is still on his rookie deal.
obviously they could go WR over Nicks, but I think it will be hard for them to let Nicks go after the year he has had.
Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com
Maybe I was wrong then
didn’t bother to look up his contract. I though Bushrod was very highly compensated.
Crying Lion
i looked it up to double check and they did back load it more than i thought
he’s do to make $6.5 million this year (as opposed to $4 million) but that is still well below the LT rate.

Steve...
what is NO cap situation? And what is the Franchise Tag cost for OL?
Usually, the Franchise tag is more costly than a long term contract (as you know), and my point is, I don’t know if NO can afford to tie up so much $$$ with the tag.
i haven't done a full breakdown of the Saints cap
but i can tell you they have some money. Now they also have a number of FA’s, and can’t sign everyone. Now a lot will depend on how they structure a Brees deal. If they backload it then they could def. keep one of Colston or Nicks.
The tag value for OL is expected to be around $9.5 million (similar to WR, but then again Colston is older), and the Saint should be able to manage that, though I’m sure they’d look to quickly work out a deal that brings that number down.

by Steve Shoup on Jan 14, 2012 10:45 AM EST up reply actions
I agree with your assessment...
they most definitely would like Nicks over Colston. I am extremely hopeful that they are going to have difficulties doing so, allowing us an opportunity to sneak in. Now, would Nicks want to come here is another story. But given the penchant to throw big $$$ at FA in the past, hasn’t always worked, yet Nicks would be well worth every penny, in my opinion.
another thought...
Brees’ contract situation has not gone as smoothly as I sure NO FO would have liked. I am very shocked that it has dragged out this long. It seems like a no-brainer to pay him, but….
oh i agree i can't believe they haven't resigned him and it is very likely that they have to use their Franchise Tag on Brees
But if they do get something done they could try to keep Nicks with the tag.
We def. have a better cap situation, though obviously we have quite a few more needs. But you are right Nicks might not choose the Skins since he might want to play for a more well established team if the money is similar.
Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com
I was thinking...
now that DC G. Williams is leaving for St. Louis, with perhaps the loss of Colston, this team is not the same team to come back to. Yes, Brees will always have them in contention, but it is still a different team, with perceived different results.
And we SHOULD offer MORE money than N.O.
good thread
glad to finally get some free agent chatter going on, all the draft talk (although fun) is a bit premature cuz free agency will have an impact on all these mocks and projections…i hadn’t heard much about myers, the texans’ center, thanks for putting that name out there…going to look into him more, but it seems like he’d be a great fit here for a few years (watching that texans o-line last week was impressive, they really had the ZBS down to an art)
I’m also big on Grubbs, seems like he’d be cheaper than nicks and fit our scheme well…I really do think we’re going to bring in a CB through free agency or the draft to solidify the nickel spot…grimes has been balling this year for the falcons too
I think bell might be an interesting player to pick up, as it now seems we’re definitely bringing in competition for that RT spot…this is a make or break (off)season for Jamal Brown, so wouldn’t be surprised to see some veteran tackle brought in to compete
As for me, all I know is that I know nothing.
*Socrates*
oh yea, and aren't michael griffing and tyvon branch free agents too
could be in the mix at safety considering the situation with landry

Now I definitely could get behind Tyvon branch coming here, safety is a need
He is a high quality, quality person and captain of the defense for the Raiders. They have a new and promising general manager however, he might not let him go.

I think they would be wise to Draft a RT in the 2nd round and let him battle it out with Smith and Brown, assuming Brown is even back next year.
When I was a kid, my father told me, "Never hit anyone in anger, unless you're absolutely sure you can get away with it." -Russell Ziskey
that makes sense
as much as shanahan has preached competition, there hasn’t seemed to be a lot of competition along the o-line, but that seemingly will change this offseason….and even if the rookie isn’t ready, brown could play for a couple weeks until the rookie is read…I like the idea of going young at RT, that way we would have bookend tackles for a decade
As for me, all I know is that I know nothing.
*Socrates*
Top FA OL are coveted
The FA OL you mentioned would be welcomed additions to WAS, however, most likely all will re-sign with their current teams. I do see WAS adding an OL through FA, but probably not a big name.
If WAS is going to shell out some money, most likely they’ll do it for a playmaker on offense like Bowe or defense like Grimes.
I would love to sign one of the free agent WRs and One interior lineman.
Dwayne Bowe, Steve Johnson, and Marques Colston are the three i like the most. I would be happy with any of them but I think Bowe should be the #1 target. We should go after Grubbs or Nicks, I would be happy with either of them. I would call it a day after those two moves on O. If you sign Bowe then your WRs are pretty set with Bowe, Moss, Gaffney, Hankerson, Paul, Stallworth/Rookie/Austin. One could argue signing Bowe impedes Hank’s developement but he will still get on the field plenty and it would give him another year to develope so that he can take over that #2 role once Gaffney’s contract is up next year.
On D, I would love to have Grimes. Grimes, Wilson, Hall is a pretty good trio. I just dont know how much $ it would take to get him so I am not sure if he a realistic option. The DB market is really thin so he will be very coveted. I am all for using our 3rd rounder on a corner, or packaging our 3rd+ one of our 4th’s to move into the 2nd round to grab a corner.
Other than those FA moves I would stick to the draft and resigning a few of our guys (Carriker, Montgomery, Licht, Hightower, Davis, Landry, Fletcher). I really think our offense has all the solid, role players we need and that we are prime for a couple marquee signings with Bowe and Nicks/Grubbs (and hopefully RG3 at QB) and we can really take off.
Front 7 on D was great and getting Jenkins back will be like adding a 2nd round pick from this years draft. Hopefully Otogwe and Landry get healthy. This team wasnt very good this year obviously but I really think a couple smart moves here and there + a QB will make us a playoff team. Its not all that crazy
I'm looking for at least 2 new starting OL next year and I'm thinking at least one will come via Free Agency
My first choices would be to replace C and RT- I can live with Licht (if healthy) and Chester at guards. I would prefer our C to come from free agency since the C helps the QB make a lot of calls at the line and ID blitzers. It would be a recipe for disaster to have potentially a rookie C and a rookie QB.
I’m also against throwing money around but I do think this year we will throw some at one of the WRs available. I don’t think its necassarily a bad thing as long as they aren’t a diva and still have plenty of production ahead of them and I think Bowe and Colston may fit that mold.
the teams FA list needs to start with...
CARL NICKS!!!!!!!!!
Watch the playoff games N.O. is in, and you will see the BEST LG in the NFL. He is the player the entire line could be built around. Placing him with TW will help in the progress TW needs, solidifying the left side of our line for the next 6 years. He is from Nebraska, so sending Helu/Paul as recruiters would help. Some may say that he is too big for Shanny’s ZB scheme and my response to that is, if you are ever going to make an exception, this is the guy you make an exception.
If he is not franchised, we need to offer him a contract reflecting the highest pay in the league, along with money up front that N.O. cannot match. This guy, I GUARANTEE, will make you forget the OL woes we have suffered from for years.
I am also big on WR Bowe.
If these were the only two FA signings, we would be positioned extremely well. I would like to see how Raheem deals with the secondary; they may not need much altering. We need to sign most of our own FA and allow the team to continue to develop together, along WITH OUR NEW FRANCHISE QB!

You are right. They are exceptional men and players (no sarcasm), and they definitely set the standard.
I was referring more towards the Michael Irvin, T.O., Desean Jackson types.
i think a better way to say it is most of the guys who are FA's this year (V-Jax, Bowe, DeSean Jackson)
My guess is Welker isn’t leaving, and the Saints could look to keep Colston. So we could be left with limited non-prima donna options this year.

V jax is not a prima dona
He had some issues with a shitty organization, he did have a DUI but anyone can get one of those….doesnt make him a troubled player. And if he was a prima dona we would have been complaining all season as much as he gets open and doesnt get the ball. V jax too me is underrated
by mr.snyderhireme on Jan 13, 2012 5:49 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
why would V-Jax complain this year, he's getting paid $11.25 million
sure he should get targeted more, but he should also catch more balls. Him and Gaffney were targeted the same number of times this year, yet he converted 7% less into receptions (it amounted to 8 receptions). And that was with Rivers throwing him the ball as opposed to Rex and Beck.
Now obvously V-Jax is a more talented receiver, but my point is he has some faults as well. And I would say his attitude is a major one.

don't get my wrong, Mr. Snyder...
I love VJax. Whether he is a head case or not is irrelevant. HE IS A BEAST. To employee the best talent, sometimes organizations need to deal with the off-the-field crap.
also V-Jax has been arrested twice for drunk driving, and another time for driving with a suspended license
if he has another incident not only would he be suspended by the league, but since he’s on probation he could go to jail. Not exactly the type of player we should be giving a major contract to.

that is why I lean towards Bowe...
he’s younger, has performed more consistently (more catches / same TDs), with perceived less headaches…
if we were going to take one I'd say Bowe, but I'm not sold that we should this year
i’d rather fix everything else this year, and make WR our top priority for next year.
Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com
by Steve Shoup on Jan 14, 2012 10:46 AM EST up reply actions
I'm not ready to say that it is imperative...
and I wouldn’t totally agree with your assessment that there are other more important areas of need…
I do know that offense will be the focus this off-season, Bowe meets the age criterial, along with performance. Could we wait until next year, sure. I am not down on our WR group. An addition of a top flight WR, though, could make this group very good.
thats my whole thought process
Could we use a top flight guy? Of course, but it isn’t a dire need. A receiving group of Hankerson, Moss, Gaffney, Davis and Cooley is solid, and if you add a mid round WR, then I think you could be fine.
The way I look at it is next year Gaffney is a FA and Moss will likely get cut, so that is the year to really focus on WR with a top priority FA or draft pick.
Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com
The 3 WRs I see Shanny looking at (and in all likelihood, signing his favorite)
would be Bowe and Jackson (from his Denver days). And third (if they went down the route of signing Matt Flynn or drafting a second round qb) drafting Blackmon in the first. But I’m obviously not going out on a limb by saying that I think they will sign either Bowe, Jackson, or Blackmon.
