Ryan Tannehill Has A Broken Foot

Ryan Tannehill's agent, Pat Dye, came out today and said that Tannehill's recent injury is a broken foot and that it might require surgery. While the Senior Bowl is definitely out for Tannehill, it now looks like the Combine might be up in the air as well. Though even if he has the surgery he will likely be able to recover in time to throw before the NFL Draft.

Now typically there are multiple injured prospects that miss the All-star games, combine and even their Pro Days, but can regain their status with an individual workout. Usually it might make a prospect slide 5-10 slots at most (depending on how many predraft things they miss), but this injury could affect Tannehill even more. Tannehill had crept into the first round discussion of every major draft publication, and was expected to firm up that status (and potential even rise higher) with a strong Senior Bowl and Combine. Now with him expecting to miss these events, it is likely that he'll be back in the 2nd round discussion, and could be passed by Foles and Weeden.

From my perspective as a guy who's liked Tannehill all year, I'm very disappointed as I looked forward to seeing Tannehill shine at both the Senior Bowl and Combine. On the other hand it could be for the best as a Redskin fan, because now they should be able to grab him in the 2nd round if they miss out on Robert Griffin. I still think he's a great fit for the Redskins, and has the ability to become the franchise QB we are all looking for.

he would be a nice fit

if we cant get any of the top guys i would prefer him to weeden and foles but i think he goes to the dolphins. or browns with there 2nd 1st rnd pick.

possible though if the Browns take RGIII obviously they'd be out of Tannehill

and even if he was healthy I don’t think Tannehill would have risen to the Dolphins pick in the first round.

I sound like a broken record...

but I always suspected Foles would pass Tannehill anyways. If he starts the Senior Bowl, he is going to play lights out football…I don’t think he’s had an offensive line or a top receiver to throw to EVER. He’s a high percentage thrower on those short slants and screens that the Redskins tend to throw a lot, and he can get the ball deep when called for. I also liked him because he got to change plays at the line, and call his own plays in most games

I'm starting to agree with you ptowny.

I think he and Coach Shanahan will build a good relationship during Senior Week.

We draft him.

-Flip Flop McGee

I was gonna say, you were beating the “RG3 is our only option, trade whatever we have to” drum all last week.

Interesting to now see you content to draft Foles

What can I say?

The Redskins’ QB situation makes me a bit unstable.

I see it as more cushion for the pushin'

haha...

One of his big knocks is that people say he’s big and slow, but he’s actually more mobile than I think he gets credit for. He’s most definitely not going to run for 400 yards in a season…but he will throw for 4000. That’s what we need out of a QB, he’s got a nice play fake, decent arm, good accuracy. He’ll get the job done for us.

Flip Flop all you want, just don’t Flynn Flop

Sounds like our man

I like the comment about him not being a runner, but being plenty mobile enough to extend plays

by StephanHart on Jan 12, 2012 1:32 PM EST up reply actions

i agree that Foles is more mobile than people give him credit for

but it’s still a bit of a knock on him, given how much we move the QB around (either by design or lack of an offensive line).

Foles could def. be an option though in the 2nd round.

Nevermind

We’re talking Foles, not Tannehill.

My bad.

Who says he's big and slow?

He’s a WR-turned-QB with a 4.6 40

i agree

about the browns not needing him if they steal/ draft rg3
but after last years 5 qb in the first round if he has a good pro day the fins would probally take him imo. maybe a trade back trade up like the ravens especially if we dont draft a qb in the first round they will know he wont get past us again. I hope he still shows up to the senior bowl so shanny can at least evaluate the mental part of his game

by taylor21 on Jan 12, 2012 1:19 PM EST reply actions

possibly

but remember last year the draft happened well before FA, so I think some teams didn’t want to be left without a QB when the musical chairs stopped (obviously Shanny had no such fear). Also when looking at the FA/trade market you had Hasselbeck, Kolb, McNabb, Orton (as a trade), and Vince Young. This year you have Peyton Manning, Matt Flynn, Kyle Orton, Jason Campbell, plus some young guys like Henne, Stanton, Quinn etc. Also the fact that 6 teams took QB’s last year, and guys like Tebow and Matt Moore might have quieted some of the immediate need for a signal caller in some cities (Denver and Miami will still look QB, but I doubt in the first round, and maybe not even in the 2nd).

If there is a 3rd QB in the first round I think it will be more like a pick in the 20’s, and now this does hurt those odds.

true true free agency is 1st this year

with miami i doubt any new coach is gonna stand behind matt moore. I live in miami and hear there fans everyday crying (why didnt we take a chance on brady quinn), (why didnt we draft matt ryan instead of jake long)( why did we choose culpepper over brees) belive me they will draft a quaterback in the 1st round or all hell will break loose after wasting a 2nd round on chad henne they arnt gonna take that chance again but who knows I think Peytons health is the key to every team that needs a quaterback i just dont believe any coach is going to pick an unproven rookie over a mvp

by taylor21 on Jan 12, 2012 2:25 PM EST reply actions

Why does everyone thing that the Colts are going to dump Manning?

Yeah…I’ve read ALL the stuff about the injury and his contract situation but give me a break… at least wait until there;s some evidence that they’re going to unload the face of the franchise with nothing but a rookie left behind.

Clevelands going to make a play for Flynn

And probably get him because we will low ball him. Without research the Pack may franchise Flynn (unless theres someone more pressing that I’m forgetting about), at which point Cleveland would pony up the picks to sign him because of the extras that they have. The Pack has to be considering how many QB needy teams out there as you normally wouldn’t franchise a backup QB.

by Bryan Black on Jan 12, 2012 2:34 PM EST via Android app reply actions

I believe

It would cost the pack a lot to franchise him. Assuming he is not franchised, I think its safe to conclude Miami, Cleveland, Seattle, and KC will all be approaching him.

It cost you ZERO to franchise a player.

It’s only when the player signs the offer sheet is when it costs money.

by jmpalomo on Jan 12, 2012 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

Right but thats the big risk

If they Franchise him to trade him, that means that whatever team trades for him will have to pay him his franchise tag money for the season, 14-15 million dollars.

If no one wants to pay him that, the Packers are stuck paying that contract to a backup QB.

I don’t think they take this risk

by StephanHart on Jan 12, 2012 2:50 PM EST up reply actions

yes but you need to have that $15 million cleared b/c once that offer sheet is signed you have to get in accordance with the cap

and it seems like more and more agents are telling their players to sign the offer sheets to force the team to work out a long term deal. Flynn esp. should sign the offersheet because it gives him big time leverage in forcing a trade and the guaranteed portion of his deal.

I love how we lowballed that DE from the packers forgot his name already.

Dear Passionate fan, I know you are passionate, but please reply with a logical answer or I will ignore you.

by TerpsAllTheWay on Jan 12, 2012 4:34 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

We didn't lowball him

We gave jenkins an offer, he was about to sign, but he used our contract as leverage to get more from the iggles. Allen heard about that, got pissed and retracted the offer. But, I wouldn’t characterize what we offered him as a lowball.

by mbedner on Jan 12, 2012 5:48 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Yep, I commented without

knowing their situation in green bay but having those contracts coming up also makes it difficult for them to do as I suggested. I think they look hard at their options though so they don’t let flynn leave for nothing if at all possible

Gigem

I say pick up tannehill and ice him.let him recover from surgery and start working him into the mix, reps and more reps, not to mention conditioning.

I watched 1 cut up from AZ state game

I like what I saw.

good accuracy
quick decisions
good footwork
nice play action
multi read qb
POISE IN THE POCKET

All those things show up no matter what the talent level is around you or your opponent. Can’t hide it. #1 thing I look for is accuracy followed by decision making(reads).

Blessing in disguise. Shanny will never have the time needed for a project like this guy to work out.

by HogtieJim on Jan 12, 2012 3:53 PM EST reply actions

He has to worry about time. Its a constant factor whether we would like it to be or not. Ideal situations don’t exist.

They’d be able to sit if the Skins had a capable QB on the roster, but they don’t.

by HogtieJim on Jan 12, 2012 4:21 PM EST up reply actions

Depends on the timing

Rex for 1-3 games and I think we are alright, any more than that and we probably we probably can’t recover. Whatever kid comes in needs to be ready quickly. One of two things will happen, assuming Rex comes back, either he will play lights out football or stink up the joint even more with him knowing its only a matterr of time before he is relieved of his duties

by Bryan Black on Jan 12, 2012 5:40 PM EST via Android app up reply actions

Come on now...
assuming Rex comes back, either he will play lights out football or stink up the joint even more with him

You KNOW Rex’s history…he is what he is…a turnover machine. He’s been that way for nine going on ten years. You’re not going to all of a sudden turn him into a clean machine with no turnovers. He didn’t get to the Super bowl on his arm..he got there on a great defense. give me a backup QB who just plays within the system and holds on to the ball for our side.

Browns qb situation

If the Browns don’t take a QB with their 1st pick in the first round I don’t see them drafting one with the 2nd pick in the first or their 2nd rounder. I just think if they feel they will have an immediate and drastic improvement over McCoy at their pick (i.e. Luck/Griffin) they will do it.

If they have someone that honestly has more of a chance to put up much more pedestrian type of numbers (similar to McCoy) I don’t see them trying to develop both guys to see if one pans out (McCoy and Foles or Tannehill).

If the Browns can’t get RGIII, I see them drafting a later round (4-7) developmental guy and hitching their wagon to McCoy one more year with an eye on next year’s draft.

by jamesumd on Jan 13, 2012 1:41 PM EST reply actions

The only way the Browns wouldn't have a shot at RG3 at the #4 spot

is if some team trades with the Rams or Viks. No way either of those teams take RG3. If i’m Shanny and Bruce, I’m on the phone from now until the day of the draft with both the Colts and Rams trying to work a deal out to move up.
