Lets dispell this Mike Shanahan notion now
I keep hearing people say that Mike Shanahan doesn't cater his offense to the strengths of his players. I just don't think that is true and neither does he. Dan Graziano the blogger for the ESPN NFC EAST recently had an interview with Mike about just that. Here is the interview and a few highlights:
One of the most common criticisms of Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan is that he's a slave to his own offensive "system," and more interested in finding players who fit that system than in finding the best possible players and constructing a system around them. Shanahan has heard this criticism, and when I brought it up in my interview with him last week, this is what he had to say about it:
"It's kind of funny, because when I had Steve Young and we had to run a West Coast offense [in San Francisco], and Steve was so much different than Joe Montana, you know, it was different. And then [John] Elway -- Elway didn't want to run the five-step drop. We were in a shotgun formation all the time. He hated the West Coast offense of three- and five-step drops, so with John it was a seven-step drop and a lot of shotgun.
And then we wind up getting a guy like Jake Plummer, and of course Jake... totally different. He had to be outside the pocket, all those quarterback keeps, boots, none of the drop-back, none of the seven-step drop. He was good on the run, good on the play action, but the drop-back wasn't his game.
"So what you've always got to do is, whatever quarterback you have, you adjust your system to your players. The one thing I think I have been categorized with is the zone blocking scheme. People say, 'Oh, he loves the zone blocking scheme.' So I think I've been stereotyped there, relative to the running game. But in the passing game, if people look at what we've done in different places, they're gong to say, 'Oh, he adjusts the passing game to the quarterback.' Like with Rex [Grossman]. You can't run quarterback keeps with Rex, but you can do it with John [Beck]. So whatever somebody can do, you try to adjust accordingly."
So can we put this stuff to rest now?

who ever we get shanny will make it work
His job / legecy depend on his qb being succesful. the real question is will kyle adapt
to add on I really trust his choice
I mean they were saying Blaine Gabbart was the best qb in the draft and he fell into our lap Mike didn’t bat an eye he knew thats not who he wanted for his offense. Had it been a player he could of used or seen potential in i think he would of taken him

Thanks for this
I hadn’t seen it, and there’s certainly been a lot of noise out there regarding this perceived unwillingness to adapt the system.
I see what you did there
With the title, good job.
And besides, the last thing I am willing to believe is anything that Mike Shanahan says about Mike Shanahan

Dominating your opposition physically is great and all, but confounding them mentally is sooo much more fun.

Glad someone finally said this.
The Shanahan is completely inflexible idiocy was really annoying me.

The notion that burns me is when people say "He's looking for the next Elway"...
I don’t think he’s totally inflexible, but I do think he elevates some prospects over others b/c he is looking for the right fit. It does seem that Shanny is getting more and more flexible with his molds though. He does look for one cut backs, but they are in various sizes and varieties now. And how many times have you heard that he likes smaller, quicker linemen? That doesn’t seem to be the case.

Aren't we all
“Looking for the next Elway?”
I can’t fault him for doing that, but I don’t think he’s chasing the white whale here. He’s not gonna let his “dreams” affect his overall search.

seriously
the whole “system” thing for qb’s is a total myth, there’s basically no basis to it yet it has become almost Gospel re: Shanny. Makes no sense
If it's a myth then why did he pass on like 7 guys last year?
Why did he bring in a guy that knows his system? Why did he trade for two guys that he thought would excel in his system? And that’s just in DC.

Strawman.
If it’s a myth then why did he pass on like 7 guys last year?
I assume you’re referring to the draft? So Cam Newton, Jake Locker, Blaine Gabbert, Christian Ponder, Andy Dalton, Colin Kaepernick, and Ryan Mallett…are you referring to available FA? Questions:
As far as the draft goes, it seems to me like he simply passed on mediocre quarterbacks while not trading up which would have guaranteed more holes on the roster that already looked like swiss cheese.
What was he supposed to do, bring in someone that doesn’t know the system to be caretaker QB to prime the personnel so that when a rookie QB comes in to learn the system he won’t be surrounded by players who know where they need to be for their QB?
But all that said, all head coaches like a system because they are organized. Otherwise, they are Mike Singletary. Shanahan is willing to tailor his system to a QB’s strengths as long as they can do what he believes a QB needs to do. So I agree with you he’s got a system, but while McNabb, Beck, and Grossman have been disappointments, none of those fiascos stack with the disappointment of another bust first round quarterback. With respect to the last draft, I am grateful Shanny’s got a system, because being invested in Blaine Gabbert right now would be more than I could take.

the “system” talk is overblown, but it is still relevant at the same. I think you hit the nail on the head really. But I feel we can’t totally dismiss the actual chance that finding the right fit for the system is part of the total evaluation of a prospect.

No, you're absolutely right.
Looking for a franchise QB for the ‘skins feels like we could watching our breadwinner panning for gold by moonlight instead of sunlight, never sure if he’s going to miss the big meal ticket because he isn’t seeing everything there is to see :/

what system? can you please me specific?
shanny himself just said he’s played qb’s differently based on their abilities the whole time. In fact he said Elway loved the shotgun……the fact RG3 plays in the gun is the exact reason so many people claim shanny doesnt think he fits “the system”. So Shanny would pass on Elway now too?
There is no system for the qb in Shanny’s offense, that’s what he is saying.
I think the major difference here is that Shanny inherited Elway and wasn't the HC for Young, so not his decision.

But he was OC with 49ers right?
I imagine OC’s get significant input into the QB choice.

I have read it before but just glad you posted it.
RGIII would be a great QB for the Redskins.
This blog is the s**t
Great post. This is the site I visit the most besides my fanny(fantasy) leagues. Great job guys. So now can we stop the RG3 won’t fit in this system talk please?? Sell the farm for RG3, you have to for elite level QBs.

We saw this during the season as well
Shanahan went from calling tons of stretch plays with hightower and torain to a dive-toss running scheme with Helu and Royster.
Good coaches adapt their scheme to suit their personnel. Shanahan has shown that he is capable of this as well.
I know Rex is also RGIII
but let’s refrain from using that….each time I hear the Rex referred to as RGIII makes me want to trade the 6th pick away more and more

then we can name our rex
RGXXL

Hopefully he won't be "our" Rex
anymore after this draft, at least not starting for us. My sanity is important to me and it cant endure much more!
