Robert Griffin III Set to Declare for Draft

This morning on ESPN's NFL Countdown Chris Mortensen reported that Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III is set to declare for the NFL draft before the January 15 deadline. Griffin is expected to be the second quarterback taken in April's draft behind Andrew Luck, and is thought to be a prime target for the Redskins. Browns' top draft pick last year and a former teammate of Giffin's, Phil Taylor recently spoke on RG3's NFL prospects:

"He’s the type of athlete that could fit into any system," Taylor said. "He can run, he can pass. He can take snaps under the center, shotgun; whatever you need, he can do. . . . They said the same thing about Cam — ‘Is he gonna adapt to the system?’ And he’s doing great right now with Carolina."

Today's games around the league could drastically affect where RG3 will be playing in 2012.

Indeed he would

Package Landry or Davis and do what it takes to move up a few spots.

by el freako on Jan 1, 2012 11:11 AM EST reply actions

Landry & Davis

Would have to agree to new contracts w/ other teams before that can happen. Davis being a pothead & Landry being often hurt & overrated would make that a challenge.

I think we win the bidding war for this guy.

This draft will be huge for this franchise.

I see it as more cushion for the pushin'

Apparently the Colts are highly considering a QB

even if they can’t take Luck. It’s rumored that they like the idea in taking RG3 to groom behind Manning for a few years.

To me, that screams that the Colts really want to trade back and are trying to get someone to move up to whatever spot they are at to take a QB.

by UkRedskin on Jan 1, 2012 11:17 AM EST reply actions

Some things on twitter

said that Mort had said it on NFL Countdown or something like that.

by UkRedskin on Jan 1, 2012 11:42 AM EST up reply actions

Hmmm...

That would be interesting. I don’t see a scenario where they could fall back, acquire picks, and be in the perfect position to draft RG3. I’m not sure how probable that would be.

by mbedner on Jan 1, 2012 11:46 AM EST up reply actions

I meant that the Colts would use RG3 or Luck

to move back and collect more picks. I don’t think they take either if they think Manning is healthy. But they will bluff the whole way through the process to drive up interest and force a QB needy team to trade up.

by UkRedskin on Jan 1, 2012 11:49 AM EST up reply actions

Makes the most sense to me

The trade value for their #1 pick is going to be incredible. Hard to pass up cashing in on it.

by willster on Jan 1, 2012 11:42 AM EST up reply actions

I've thought for a while now that

RG3 would be the better fit to the Colts because you could argue he’s not pro ready just yet and you can see if Manning is healthy enough to go. But I’ve felt all along that if the Colts feel that Manning is healthy (wasn’t he throwing a few weeks ago?) that they would hold the pick for ransom and sell to the highest bidder to rebuild for another few years of super bowl runs with Manning.

by UkRedskin on Jan 1, 2012 11:45 AM EST up reply actions

Of course the Colts are taking a QB. Manning will be 36 and a half when the season starts

He is coming off season ending neck surgery. He is old. Why is anyone pretending the Colts aren’t taking a QB?

exactly

Which they can get out of by releasing him today. Do you really think they want to pay the 28 million plus to “make another run” they need to resign Wayne and Saturday. Are they really investing that much money for another 2 year run when they haven’t been won the SB in almost 6 years? Their window is passed. They won 2 games this year. Do you seriously think they would nave been a contender this year even with Manning?

The Colts entire team

is built around him, so yes I think if Manning played the whole season at 100% they’d have made the playoffs. The offense is designed for him to run it as he reads the defense at the line, while the Colts defense is designed to protect a lead with a pass-rush from Freeney and Mathis in the 4 man front to allow them to drop 7 into coverage.

You take Manning out of that offense and place a QB in there who doesn’t know the offense, who can’t read a defense as well as Manning, and can’t call his own plays, then it’s going to struggle. The knock on effect of that is that the defense is no longer protecting a lead, but instead having to run more complex plays to adjust. Plus with the offense failing due to no Manning, they have to be on the field more often and get tired quicker.

by UkRedskin on Jan 1, 2012 12:31 PM EST up reply actions

Isn't that what an offensive coordinator is for? They certainly could have executed A LOT better this year.

They still have solid football players regardless of what they are “designed” for. No one is going to read the defense as well as Manning. Collins was old and didn’t care, Painter is just terrible, and now Orvlosky is showing some flashes. If the Colts had a halfway decent contingency plan then they could’ve easily been a .500 team.

Didn't ask if they would have made the playoffs.

I asked if they would have been a contender. You don’t go from 2 wins to SB contender with one player. Now if the Colts would have finished this year with 6-8 wins then we could have the conversation about them making another run. This team hasn’t won the SB in 6 years, Manning is 36 and coming off missing an entire season. Did you see Peyton on the sidelines last game? He still looks stiff, do you think the Colts are risking the next 10 years on a hope and dream that Peyton comes back in MVP form? The key players are old and need to be resigned. This 2 win year i think made the decision for the Colts FO. If they rate Luck as high as everyone else does then they are taking him.

I think its if we lose and jags win, we move to 4th.

If we lose

Jags, Browns and Bucs all have to win for us to move to 4th. I want the Colts to win and the Rams to lose so the asking price for LUck goes down a little bit

by terpsallday on Jan 1, 2012 11:27 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

The highest we can get is 4th.

But for that to happen we need the Bucs to beat the Falcons, the Browns to beat the Steelers, the Jags to beat the Colts and obviously us lose to Philly.

The ideal if you’re looking to trade up for Luck would be 5th. Which would involved Bucs beating Falcons, Browns beating Steelers and the Colts beating the Jags.

In all likelihood though, we will stay 7th.

by UkRedskin on Jan 1, 2012 11:28 AM EST up reply actions

Hope we we move back rather than up by 4:30ish today. Much rather beat the Eagles then worry about RG3
1. Indianapolis Colts (2-13)
2. St. Louis Rams (2-13)
3. Minnesota Vikings (3-12)
4. Jacksonville Jaguars (4-11)
5. Cleveland Browns (4-11)
6. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-11)
7. Washington Redskins (5-10)
8. Miami Dolphins (5-10)

by Horcasitas4 on Jan 1, 2012 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

I can give you a top 11.

I believe as things stand were looking like this:

1. Colts 2-13 (Strength of Schedule .5333)
2. Rams 2-13 (SOS .5875)
3. Vikings 3-12 (SOS .5583)
4. Jags 4-11 (SOS .5042)
5. Browns 4-11 (SOS .5292)
6. Bucs 4-11 (SOS .5500)
7. Skins 5-10 (SOS .4750)
8. Phins 5-10 (SOS .5125)
9. Panthers 6-9 (SOS .5000)
10. Chiefs 6-9 (SOS .5167)
11. Bills 6-9 (SOS .5167)

So in reality, even if we win today we’ll only drop to 8th from 7th due to SOS.

by UkRedskin on Jan 1, 2012 11:41 AM EST up reply actions

I am having a hard time seeing how we get Robert

There are too many teams that need a quarterback (or want one) with more ammunition to move up if necessary… if the Redskins overreach for one of the top two quarterbacks, the rebuild will most likely be at risk in putting us on track for another regime change.
I just don’t see a smart front office doing something like that–if they do, it could be a frightening two years.

Obviously we must take everything Shanny says with a grain of salt.....

I got the impression from his interview that he is looking at several QB prospects (as many as 15?) and also stated that we are in no position to be trading up.

Any talk of us trading up to get a guy thats so far from a sure thing is ridiculous at best

ID SAY WE WILL PICK AT 5

I think the jags and cleveland will win and we will lose and if that happens rg3 will be our new QB . Cross your fingers . If we get him we will be at least a 9 or 10 win season next year easily.

After the Bowl game, I just don't think RG 111 is a good fit for the skins

Im not sure why we have become so focused on him.

I love his attitude.

But he appears to be a better running back than an accurate passer. I have shared how I like Russell Wilson on this site and got some negative feedback, siting his accuracy. Interestingly RG3 shares most passing yardage with guess who, Russell Wilson.

Theres no way our coaches pick RG3, even if we could, I think we go with a true pocket passer.

RG3 is my man

Love this guy to death. I think he’d be a great pick. I’ve said it before I think he compares favorably to the Jay Cutler mold of Shanny’s QBs. Mobile, good play-action bootleg kinda guy, adept deep passer, big arm, smart. I know everyone is saying pure pocket passers but I really think RG3 would fit right in. Everyone says don’t trade up, I know, but you’ve got to get the guy you need to run your system. No, don’t unnecessarily trade up, but if RG3 is the franchise QB for this team, you do what you have to to get him.

So with the loss and Jags win we are at #6?

But playing the Colts has drastically lowered the Jags strength of schedule.
We may still be picking #7 so far.

by jmpalomo on Jan 1, 2012 4:17 PM EST reply actions

Root hard for Tampa Bay and Cleveland

It would be awesome if we can get #4.
The USC OT and OKS Wideout will be an enticing trade bait for St. Louis and Minnesota

by jmpalomo on Jan 1, 2012 4:21 PM EST up reply actions

The Jags had a very hard sos coming in.

They were at .529 and we were at .476. I doubt we end up with a harder sos than them. We have the #6 pick right now, and we really could use a cleveland win too boos us up.

i really hope we get him

but i dont wanna give up anything for him. ied rather get best player in draft and just sign flynn who isnt that old. but i think we get rg3 baring a trade up

by munson21502 on Jan 1, 2012 5:58 PM EST reply actions

might not have to draft QB in round 1

did you see matt flynn today 6 touchdowns and 480 yds passing the man was sick if we cant get RG111 we should really push hard to get him every time this guy got a chance to play he has been awesome

lohaus #54

by lohaus#54 on Jan 1, 2012 8:49 PM EST reply actions

problem is we wont know if we can get rg3 until after flynn is off the market

so the staff have to make up a plan. i think we have a good chance to get flynn if the coaching staff wants him. he would be the number1. so i think he rather take less money and come here for 3 years to prove he is a good qb. then take a few extra million and play for a team that he might not start for day 1.

but has anyone thought of Weeden. Shannys type of qb.

by ThomasZ on Jan 1, 2012 10:49 PM EST reply actions

i think i rather sign flynn and take a younger 2nd round qb since weeden is close to flynns age.

by munson21502 on Jan 2, 2012 12:45 AM EST up reply actions

Flynn looks like a winner!

Matt Flynn has started just two games in his career, and has shown the potential to consistently put up big numbers! Why don’t we make a play for Flynn in FA and save our first round pick for someone like Juston Blackmon? We need a serious threat at receiver, and Blackmon’s that kind of guy! We could do a lot worse than Flynn, and we could take a guy in the second round to groom to take his place! Someone like Case Keenum, or maybe that QB from N. Illinois! Shanny likes projects, and this could work out to his, and our advantage!

Rick "the Rebel" Hall

by Rebel2650 on Jan 2, 2012 11:07 AM EST reply actions

2 games and consistency do not go together.

And Case Keenum isn’t a second round QB. Blackmon would be a good pick but only if it proves impossible that we cannot get a top QB.
Flynn is a risk; everyone is a risk. He might turn out to be good, but with his weapons and that consistently efficient offense, it is natural that he would over-achieve given his actual ability.
