Who to listen to: ESPN980 or 106.7 The Fan

I was driving home from work around 11:45 pm Saturday night. I turned on 106.7 the Fan because they were talking Redskins. Wah, wah, wah, wah. It just sounded like a bunch of Hyeina's laughing. Making fun of everyone who said that Rex Grossman would be the starting quarterback. Keilland Williams and Artis Hicks predicted a different starting quarterback. They made fun of them and said they were probably paid by Shanahan to say a different QB would start. Why is it that all their night and weekend DJ's all laugh alike. It's like their all the same person.

Where do they come up with these guys? Except for my man Lavar Arrington and Mike Weiss I just don't like any other Sports DJ on that Station. They just feed off negativity toward the Redskins. They cannot stand when the Skins do good. What a joke. Some of them even claim they are Redskins Fans. They hate, and I mean Hate Dan Snyder. He is like bealzabub to them. The anti-christ.

I love listening to Lavar. He is excellent. His sidekick is made from another cloth. Chad Dukes will make a super negative statement about the Skins and how they will suck and be the worst team and he can't believe that people are positive about the team. And then he will say "What do you think Lavar?" Lavar will pause and then has to craft his answer in a way that he does not offend his co-host but does not agree 100%. He is a magician on pulling that off. A little bit more positive would go a long way.

The winner of the most Negative Broadcaster in the Washington DC area, by far, is Holden Kushner. If you want to depress yourself and be down on the Redskins just listen to this dude. The hands down winner. He gets my negative trophy.

ESPN980 is more of the Analytical and traditional programming. I love Doc Walker. He loves the Redskins but can also call them out. They are definitely more positive than The Fan. Coach John Thompson is always great to listen too. He tries to keep it real. Steve Czaban and Andy Pollin are Jeckyl and Hide. Pollin is about the most negative ESPN980 gets. You need to prove alot before he comes around. Czab wants to believe in the Redskins and he always leaves a little hope out there. I love Kevin Sheehan. He is about my favorite. He is very good at his deductions and is really easy to listen too.

Everyone has a choice. Go positive or go negative. Just my opiinion from someone who listens to alot of sports radio.

Yea

The negativity is all backed up with horrible play. I listen to pretty much 1067 exclusively tho if Doc is on I’ll always tune into the that. JThompson is tough to listen to for football stuff.

That's because they are really Eagle fans.

They only claim to be Skins fans because they work here now.
Claim to be Redskins fans but go all out to slam them any chance they get.
How did the McNabb thing work out?

I listen to the Junks every day

They’ve been in the business of covering area sports for 15 years. You might hate the negativity, but it’s not like it’s not fueled by the bonehead front office at Redskins Park.
I agree on Dukes, he’s a smarmy turd and usually thinks all callers are stupid and don’t hold water against his all knowing opinions. LaVar’s ok, but he gets on my nerves too.
I do however, love the Junks and the Mike Wise Show. The reason I prefer 106.7 the fan is because they CAN talk about anything. They can say what the fans are thinking. 980 is a Redskins ran channel, so you’re not going to hear any negative feedback regarding an organization that rightfully deserves it.

they both suck

980 is full of your stereotypical jaded old school journalism guys who hate on ‘new’ media like blogs and often dont bother to watch the stuff they talk about, while 106.7 is an extreme reaction that, with guys who claim to speak ‘for the fans’ and show how ‘real’ they are by bashing everyone and everything.

I listen to John Thompson or Sports Reporters on 980

pretty much every afternoon coming home from school or tennis. I like them, but when they talk about the Redskins I just shake my head. Especially Sports Reporters.

Oh, and I really dislike Doc Walker.

There’s something so condescending and know-it-all about Walker. Not a fan.

Are you sure you’re not mistaking Doc Walker for Joe Theismann?

Theismann's a big homer. But we are in DC and he was a player.

I think Doc Walker is great. He loves talking about the tough guys on the line. He predicted in the beginning that Undrafted Lineman Willie Smith would make the team. And he did.

I've listen to sports radio since I was 10.

Growing up in Frederick when it got dark I could pick up the signal from 660 the fan in NY, sadly that’s what I would fall asleep to. I’ve listen to Sports Talk 980 since it’s inception and remember when they would broadcast Jim Rome’s show from 12-3. We would listen to that in the dorms.

So fast forward and we now have lots of options..
106.7- I listen occasionally but the hosts (Wise, Holden. Lavar, Dukes, etc) are only slightly less knowledgeable than the callers. Junks are great but I’m usually listening to Howard Stern at the hour unless he’s on one of his numerous vacations.
980- Kornheiser is nonsense, and I’ve never forgiven him for replacing Rome back in the day. The sports fix is ok. I’ll listen to The J. Thompson show only if he’s not on, listening to him only shrinks your sports IQ. The Sports reporters is easily the best show on 980 even if Andy “Polley” is radio death. Czabe easily makes up for Andy’s shortcomings.

Here is my listening schedule.
Morning- Stern
Afternoon- flip between 980, 106.7
3:00- Moving the chains w/ Pat Kerwin and Tim Ryan. Easily the best and most informative football show on the air.
8:00pm- if I’m in my car then it’s the Scott Ferrell show on Howard 101.

It varies..

980 you can’t get after dark
106.7 depends on where you are, It’s spotty.

Snyder owns the station.

I sometimes think

Lavar still harbors a grudge against Snyderover the contract dispute which is why he’s sometimes so critical. Same with Brian Mitchell on Comcast occasionally. He was never real happy the Skins dumped him. Sort of funny that both ended up in NY.

LaVar's beef should be with his Lawyer and not the Redskins.

It’s the Lawyers job to cross the T’s and dot the I’s.
That’s who LaVar should have sued.

by jmpalomo on Sep 9, 2011 9:11 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree

But it was still kind of a dick move by Snyder. I never knew for sure what to think about that, but now I have no doubt Snyder pulled that stunt. After the whole season ticket holder deal, there’s no doubt in my mind.

No offense...

But this is what ppl who don’t listen to ESPN980 usually say, They rip Dan Snyder (and the team) if need be all the time. Today and yesterday they were just making fun of him on his coaching decisions throughout the years.

I guess you can tell which station I prefer. lol

love 106.7

have it on most of the day especially during the junks and lavar and dukes. tune out during the mike wise show. cant handle mike schtick, it annoys me. but if mike is not on i listen to his show with kushner and whoever is filling in for wise. during that time i listen to the sports fix on 980

Mike Green in regular season- Norris Canadiate. Mike Green in Playoffs- Nowhere to be found

I feel the same way....

Mike Wise is a joke. Think that time would be better filled with Grant Paulsen at the helm. I could listen to that guy for a couple hours a day.

Me too

The Junks annoy me some, though I used to love them. Actually, my favorites are Kevin and Rock. They remind me of what the Junkies USED to be – local sports fans actually talking about Sports.

by CJHutch on Sep 19, 2011 8:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I wish I could have either of those stations

Living down in Hampton Roads we have one station that plays alot of positive Redskins talk (102.1) and then another on 94.1, “The Tony Mercurio Show”, that bashes the Redskins every chance he gets. Bashes Dan Snyder, Shanahan…..the only person that he doesnt bash is Bruce Allen because he does a Friday segment with George Allen. Be thankful that at least you have multiple afternoon drive shows to listen to, down here there is only one. Redskins Nation is strong down here (surprisingly, with all of the military in and out of town from other areas), I am surprised the idiot is still on the air. I use the philosophy that if you dont listen they wont be on the air for long. Thank the lord for a radio app on droid, I can listen to 106.7….with Lavar and Dukes being the best to listen to. How Lavar doesnt already have a more national show is beyond me, he is one of the best

by Bryan Black on Sep 7, 2011 6:50 PM EDT reply actions

Thank you Bryan. It is better to have 2 stations than 1.

All we need to do now is get rid of baseball on the radio. It is horrible when both the Nationals and Orioles are playing.
I gotta actually listen to music.
