Updated List of Redskins 2011 Final Roster Cuts

Bruce_medium

Last year on the final cut deadline, Bruce Allen traded Justin Tryon to the Colts for a 7th round pick. I expect hope Bruce can wheel and deal for a pick this year too (Donte Stallworth perhaps?).

Last year the cuts included Ryan Torain, Logan Paulsen, and Will Montgomery, so let's not overreact when a guy doesn't make it.

We'll be updating the list as they come in but feel free to consider this an open thread:

UPDATED 4:28 PM

REDSKINS ARE KEEPING 2 QBS

  • Davonte Shannon (Safety)

I think he’ll be cut & brought back week 2 because anyone who’s on a roster starting week 1 get’s their salary guarrunteed. Think he’s still valuable on special teams.

He would not clear waivers. I think he makes team.

    Watching the game replay

On NFL Network. I have to admit, Stallworth is actually growing on me. Still think he’s cut though.

I liked the guy for awhile

had some horrible luck with the man slaughter charge and everything, came back and proved his heart was in the game by working his butt off. If we hadn’t traded for Gaffney I think he’d be on the team.

by Nobetterthenbob on Sep 3, 2011 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions

    I always thought

He was a vast underachiever. Plenty of talent, but wouldn’t capitalize. He put up numbers here and theree, but you always knew he could do beet. Kinda like Michael Westbrook.

by CJHutch on Sep 3, 2011 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree for the first part of his career for sure

but starting with the patriots, he was used in screens a lot although it didn’t seem like his strong point. It continued on to baltimore and I was kind confused on why they continued to use him in that way. The guys still has good speed for his age and should be picked up by another team if/when he’s cut.

    me too,

i really am sensing a change of atmosphere, the players just seem so excited. The pick by wilson is something we’ve been lacking too, not just picks but the pick 6 or bust mentality.

Haven’t seen Paul do anything. He’ll make the PS

by CJHutch on Sep 3, 2011 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions

    Ha ha

I doubt it. He was a late round pick. We say that all the time about our guys. Remember Derrius Thompson? Darnerian McCants?
He’ll, even if he did get snatched, who says he doesn’t elect to stay? He knows our system, and he knows some guys’ stay is tenuous.

by CJHutch on Sep 3, 2011 11:32 AM EDT up reply actions

    We'll see

Like I said, I was PISSED when we let Derrius Thompson go.

Anyway, I’m predicting Paul is on the PS.

by CJHutch on Sep 3, 2011 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions

    His biggest assets

are his uncanny blocking ability (for a receiver) and the fact that he can play on just about every special teams unit. He’s almost like a WR with a linebacker’s body. I don’t know that he’s done enough offensively for another team to sign him to their 53 man roster.

there was this woman there who was screaming “NILES PAUL WIDE RECEIVER 84 NEBRASKA!” over and over. She really wanted him to sign her grocery list or something. She even started talking to the blogger guy about getting the PR people to get Paul to come over and talk to her. Then she admitted that she was a cowboy’s fan. It was very strange.

We have so many screen options

Moss and Austin are good screen receivers, and Cooley and Davis are also good with TE screens. I’d rather not have Banks taking more hits than absolutely necessary.

by CarverM on Sep 3, 2011 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions

    Exactly

Last thing he needs is to be stopped with defenders coming at him.

by CJHutch on Sep 3, 2011 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions

not sure about that. lbs running full speed

could hurt worse then getting hit by a linemen on a screen play. the main reason the new kick off rule was placed was because of all the players getting hurt on returns.

I cant wait for the eagles game

See what you're saying, but it doesn't really apply here

Stallworth isn’t old, and they want to put the best receivers out there – guys that can get open and catch the ball. The future will take care of itself – there’s always going to be the draft, FA, trades. Moss, Gaffney, Armstrong, Stallworth, plus Austin and/or Hankerson – not bad – huge improvement over last year.

Grantland joins the other national media

Their preview lumps teams into 4 categories: 1) Contenders, 2)Getting Better, 3) Getting Worse 4) No chance. Guess which one the Redskins are in.

    http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/6918507/part-i

The Redskins are basically stuck in the same spot where the Orioles were at the beginning of the millennium. They have an owner who is comfortable spending and a fan base that expects to win, but they’re trapped in a division with other teams that are also comfortable doing that and smarter about where and how they spend their gold. The shorter schedule means that there’s more likely to be a random season in which the Redskins get lucky and make the playoffs, in much the same way that there are 16-game stretches where the Orioles have a better record than the Red Sox or Yankees, but they are eons behind the rest of the division and too proud to burn the whole thing down and start over again. Unless the Shanaclan can somehow recycle a franchise quarterback from the energy they used bad-mouthing McNabb on his way out, it’s going to be a long few years in Washington. At least the stadium has Ben’s Chili Bowl now.

Best-case scenario: Whoa, John Beck has secretly been a great NFL quarterback waiting for a chance these past few years! And who would have thought that Michael Vick, Eli Manning, and Tony Romo would have all been in that ATV right before it crashed?

    Worst-case scenario: BE THE REDSKINS.

Those guys are idiots and don't know football

NFL teams don’t “get lucky and make the playoffs”, or go on random 10 game winning streaks like in baseball. They are going completely on the past and the QB situation, with no real knowledge or analysis.

The rest of that article was actually pretty well written and in-depth.

But this paragraph “Of course, the Redskins then went and had a typical Daniel Snyder offseason. After clearing the decks by dumping their old, high-priced veterans and insulting them on the way out, they replaced them by overpaying new free agents. Instead of paying Albert Haynesworth, the Redskins now have the pleasure of giving former Giants tackle Barry Cofield and Cowboys backup end Stephen Bowen more money than they deserve. They devoted too much money to a defensive back, signing O.J. Atogwe away from the Rams as one of the few pre-lockout free agents to leave the market. They spent too much on one of their own, re-signing Santana Moss as he comes off a career year at 32. And then they finally traded Donovan McNabb and replaced him with god knows what.” was just silly. Spoke like somebody who didn’t really follow their offseason too closely.

by idigl7220 on Sep 3, 2011 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions

This offseason is exactly opposite of what they have done in recent years. Article is trash but does a good job listing the most over-rated QBs in the league. Tony Romo was supposed to be the Messiah last year as the media all but handed the Lombardi trophy to the Cowboys at the start of the season. And we know how that turned out.

saying we’re doomed is a little extreme, but I agree on the implied point that hightower is our best rb pass blocker.

by Nobetterthenbob on Sep 3, 2011 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Torain seems like a good pass catcher, but his blocking skills are somewhat questionable. Helu struggled a lot with blitz pickups during training camp according to different sources, so I guess Hightower is the only viable option. If TH is injured, we’ll have some trouble.

by brazilianbeast on Sep 3, 2011 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions

    If he gets hurt

Royster is a good blocker too.

by tommy gunn on Sep 3, 2011 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions

r u sure??? some where saying is a better pass blocker than Torain..

by tommy gunn on Sep 3, 2011 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions

yes, maybe he is better than Torain in that regard, but could still be a liability against starting defenses.

“The running backs, particularly the rookies, must show they can handle a blitz. Roy Helu struggled mightily in a blitz pickup drill Tuesday — he kept dropping his head — while fellow rookie Evan Royster did not. It’s simple: If they don’t pick up the blitz, it will be tough to play. Tim Hightower will start at running back and does well in this area…”

Getting told to take off weight and then put it on is a bad bad sign in my opinion. I’m not saying he wasn’t a good guy or didn’t try but that speaks to the fact that the coaches didn’t like something they were seeing at all. I doubt we try to get him back.

by Ultada on Sep 3, 2011 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions

    Where have been?

He got told to tke off weight to mov to OLB from DE. Then he got told to put on weight to move to DT from oLB. Then he got traded

by CJHutch on Sep 3, 2011 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

But that speaks about how much the coaches didn’t like what they were seeing.

by Ultada on Sep 3, 2011 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Well if they truly didn't like what they were seeing

They would’ve just out right cut him/traded him in the beginning. Instead, they tried to find a way to keep him around and told him to lose/gain weight to move him to different positions.

by bigrm18 on Sep 3, 2011 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions

    Hey

I've been lurking around in the backgrounds secretly stalking everyone

And honestly, at first I had NO clue what you were saying in any of your comments so I wasn’t sure if I was agreeing with you or not.

by bigrm18 on Sep 3, 2011 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Only because the previous regime has used a fairly high draft pick on him. If they hadn’t traded him this year I bet he would have been cut. You have to give it a year to try and get value from someone that a 2010 3rd rounder got used on even if it was the previous regime.

by Ultada on Sep 3, 2011 2:53 PM EDT up reply actions

    Not necessarily

Just like you said, it was the previous regime that used a fairly high draft pick on him. Shanahan didn’t have any ties to Jarmon once he came in. If Shanahan truly saw absolutely nothing from Jarmon he probably would have cut him in the beginning if he didn’t see any potential whatsoever and if he couldn’t get any trade value for him.

by bigrm18 on Sep 3, 2011 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Shanny wanted to evaluate the roster the first year. He wasn’t going to cut a guy who cost a 2010 3rd rounder until he was sure there was no value. He still got rid of him plenty fast to come to the conclusion he didn’t think much of him for the Skins future.

by Ultada on Sep 3, 2011 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

    I can agree with this

But essentially what I was arguing at first was the fact that Shanahan asking him to lose/gain weight wasn’t necessarily an indication that he didn’t like Jarmon as a player or didn’t think that he could be useful in some form.

by bigrm18 on Sep 3, 2011 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Fair enough I think it was a sign but its pretty minor nitpicking point. I need more entertaining college football games to sap my boredom!!

by Ultada on Sep 3, 2011 3:21 PM EDT up reply actions

    I guess

They must not like Lorenzo Alexander either.

Jarmon was caught in a numbers game. He was hurt his rookie year, and hadn’t developed yet, and then they switched his position. To me, the fact thay they kept moving him around is because they WANTED to keep him, much like LoRax, and Sellers. Jerkins made him expendable. And Kerrigan

by CJHutch on Sep 3, 2011 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions

To me the fact that they kept moving him around was just trying to get some value from a guy that cost a 2010 3rd round pick. They then placed the highest priority on replacing that guy despite the recent high draft pick cost.

It wasn’t a numbers game on Jarmon. Shanny didn’t want him and has acted that way. Alexander hadn’t recently cost the Skins a high draft pick and worked his ass off special teams. There is a big difference.

by Ultada on Sep 3, 2011 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions

    It wasn't Zorn

He was a defensive end. Shanny wanted him to move to OLB, so he told him to drop some weight. Then, at the end of the year, he put him badk at DE, so this year they told him to add more weight.
Jarmon was a steal in the third round. Many people projected him as a first rpunder

by CJHutch on Sep 3, 2011 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Shanny obviously didn’t think he was a steal. Look I’m not saying Shanny is right. I’m saying that coaches don’t shift a guy around like that and then trade him if they like what he brought to the table at all…. Don’t expect him to return.

by Ultada on Sep 3, 2011 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions

    Exactly right.

jarmon will be a good NFL player some day. I’m a big kentucky fan, and he wrecked shit in the SEC. He’s just been moved around far too much and hasn’t had a chance to get comfortable. Give him a year of continuity in the practice squad, and you’ll see how good he can be. Sign him up.

I believe he has a no trade clause in his contract (which could be wrong, too lazy to look it up) which would solidify the previous comment.

For those asking, WR Terrence Austin participated in today’s #Redskins practice and is still on the team.

by millatyme on Sep 3, 2011 3:58 PM EDT reply actions

He and others could be in limbo - since not cut yet - for a few hours

And still on the team pending trades. I.e., if they can trade somebody, Austin sticks, if not, he goes. A waiting game, playing it right down to the last second. Could be why the cuts are so slow in being finalized.

Seems like a lot of WRs and LBs. I wonder if they aren’t planning some trades, and can’t risk cutting certain guys (like Paul and White) because they will lose them, so they are in effect stashing them in the 53. It’s crazy that they don’t have a backup guard, and have only 4 DEs. They are lucky that for now Buchanan and Moore don’t count against them, but they will in 4 and 6 weeks.

I hope the team can use the “concussion” from the last game to keep him on the squad. He has value and given Torain’s (aka glassman) ability to stay on the field depth is needed at RB. I like the fact Royster can catch passes out of the backfield and has shown he is durable in college. A nice fit for a third guy at RB, don’t see Torain filling this spot. Given his past, he will be out for the season after about the fourth week.

    No!

Unless the team thinks Laron will no longer be an effective player. We signed a safety in the offseason and we have Landry. We have other positions (OL) that need an upgrade and more depth. Unless the front offic thinks Laron won’t get on the field this year, no need for another starting safety.

by Pilgrim34 on Sep 3, 2011 11:48 PM EDT up reply actions

    is the achilles that much

of a serious issue for Landry? Would the Skins explore other options?

by Big Spoon on Sep 3, 2011 11:54 PM EDT up reply actions

    ?

That is the million dollar question. He was a beast last year and can do a lot in Haslett’s scheme. Is this a chronic injury or something that can be overcome? I don’t know that is what trainers and specialists are paid for. If the front office has any inkling it could be chronic, then they need to look for a legit replacement. We have depth at safety, but only Laron and Atogwe are true starters.

by Pilgrim34 on Sep 4, 2011 12:02 AM EDT up reply actions

    Exactly

We shall see, b/c Landry will be ‘very rusty’ whenever he returns to play, and right now he’s not in ‘game-ready shape’. Granted he works out and he’s physical presence, however if he on the sideline for ‘x’ amount of time, the FO need to start looking around.

I’m not trying to jump the gun, but this is business…

by Big Spoon on Sep 4, 2011 12:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Landry - they say the achilles is OK, and now it's just a hamstring

I hope this is the case! When you see achilles issues it raises red flags! A guy like Laron needs his “wheels.” No disrepect meant, but I can’t take losing another safety. We should still have “21” out there beasting on guys like D-Jack. I really hope Laron can stay healthy.

by CJHutch on Sep 4, 2011 7:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes, they are really thin in both lines - no backup guard at all, and only two backup DEs (Golston and Scott).

They are getting Moore and Buchanan’s spots free now, and two will have to be cut when (and if) they come back. I still don’t see cutting Bryant for Neild, given the shortage at DE (Cofield has offered to play some DE, but isn’t likely to since it’s only he and Neild at NT).

no “glass man” tag for Landry??

by tommy gunn on Sep 4, 2011 3:02 AM EDT up reply actions

The dude has literally missed 9 games

in his 5 season career. That’s 11% and 9% of that came on one injury. I know who you’re referring to, and he’s missed 75% of his career due to more than a few injuries. do you understand that concept yet? That 11% doesn’t equal 75%? Typically you have to be injured at least 40 or 50 percent of the time to be deemed a “glass man.”

by TheDeepBall on Sep 4, 2011 3:37 AM EDT up reply actions

    First of all

I don’t really think we’d be able to land Meriweather. We’re not gonna pay him what other teams will, and he would want to be named the starter, full time.
Now, that said, you’ve kind of touched on the touchy subject that plays into my reasoning. We DO need insurance for Landry. He’s coming off a big injury, hasn’t hit the field since midway through LAST YEAR, and his contract is up. Now, I have a NICE, throwback Landry jersey. By no means do I want to lose him. But be a little openminded about it. Did anyone expect him to be out this long, possibly even missing the opener? What if it drags on past that? Or, what if he rushes back, only to hurt himself again? I know it’s “just a hamstring” now, but that’s probably a compensation injury. What if he’s not fully healthy this season? Then we have to decide how much we want to pay him, and is he gonna think it’s enough? Do you pay him as one of the top safeties (which he’ll probably want) when he’s never even made a Pro Bowl? I wouldn’t. But then you run the risk of losing him.
Meriweather, on the other hand, is the same age, HAS been to multiple Pro Bowls, and kno what it’s like to win. He’ll of an insurance policy.

    Comparison

What are you basing your comparison on? The end of last year or the start of training camp. The loss of Jenkins hurt really bad, but this years squad is much deeper on the D-Line. We cut dead weight and added some legit guys via free agency. I don’t see anyway that you could claim our D-Line this year is worse than last years.

I have respect for guy, he plays hard. I just don’t think he fits the system and he a back-up in a 3-4. Nield played 3-4 in college, is a big dude, plays hard and is younger.

D-line - the starters are fine, but not much depth

I wonder if they are at all thinking of taking Jarmon back.

    That's thing

I thought Jarmon wasn’t the exact fit due to the 3-4?

    Agree

Decent player in a 4-3, likely a quality back-up. Just like Blades and McIntosh, that is why I can’t believe they brought Rocky back. I hope it was to keep him from going to a divison rival. Riley should be starting after Rocky gets burned on the first series of the year against the Giants. We can keep Rock on the bench in case of injury. We only gave him a one year deal, thankfully!

    True

We do have depth at linebacker and I still think this years squad has more depth on the D-line. Also, we can use different formations other than base on D. I am more concerned about the O-Line and the secondary. If Landry stays healthy, my concerns about the secondary will subside.

    im worrid about QB

this team looks to be a just miss playoff team.. and will end up with a bad pick in the draft. so its gonna cost us alot of picks to trade up in the draft or get a good FA QB next year. we are pretty much stuck at 8-8,9-7,10-6 :(

when can C. Palmer come back??

by tommy gunn on Sep 4, 2011 3:04 AM EDT up reply actions

    In about 4 yrs

b/c the Bengals have the 1st rights over him (due to his abrupt retirement, while under contract)

by Big Spoon on Sep 4, 2011 4:06 AM EDT up reply actions

Palmer can report to the facilities today.....

to try to force his hand. He is on a retired/failed to report list. If he reports….he makes it so the Bengals HAVE to decide whether to pay his 10+million/year salary and put him somewhere….or they could decide to finally cut him and move on. It would be a major power move by Palmer…but people close to him are saying it’s not going to happen. They could also be covering for him so the team is caught off guard if he does show!

I am ready for some Redskins mother f&%$ing football!!!!

    Practice Squad questions for ThrowItDown

Read thru your post of the PS CBA agreement but now have some more questions:

    1. If we have a man on the PS and another team wants him, do we have any priority?

    2. I’m sure this is immoral (and is done), but can a PS player’s agent get into this and say “we want more money to join you” and then whipsaw bids with other teams?

    3. Similar to Number 2, but slightly different, can a PS player turn down another team’s offer and say “I don’t want to go there, I want to stay right where I am”?
