Around SBN: L'Equipe Claims He's Coming To Chelsea On Five Year Deal

So yeah, Jammal Brown is still medicore at best

And on his bad days, like MNF v Dallas, he's outright bad.

He's just too slow and immobile to keep up with athletic pass rushers (ie all of them). Not only could he not block Demarcus Ware, he couldn't even get a hand of him sometimes.

As of today the offensive line has one highly rated prospect, and 4 mediocre/average players.

Licht and Will Montgomery should continue to develop, but whether they and Chris Chester (or someone else) can form a strong interior remains highly questionable.

And like I said, Jammal Brown needs to be replaced at the earliest possible convience. Given how little draft value (first three rounds) we've invested in our line over the last 12 years, seems obvious to me we need to draft a RT (or a LT and move Trent to right - but I think Trent will be fine at LT in the long run).

If magically some young great RT hits the FA market next year, great. But that almost never happens.

For most of a decade this franchise has almost completely ignored the offensive line in the early part of the draft.

It has to stop. Perennially good teams don't have mediocre offensive lines unless your QB is Peyton.

It's that simple.

So yeah, Jammal Brown: not good enough.

You and those PFF stats.....................haha

Tell me why then, is “one of the best pass blockers in the league” riding our bench? And please explain why, “one of the best pass blockers in the league last year” could not land a starting gig somewhere in the NFL?

You realize the PFF stats are based on such crazy stats as

Sacks, hits, hurries, and penalties right? Same reason one of the leagues worst OTs last year, Brown, can get a $27 million deal. Locklear isn’t perfect and he might not repeat last years performance, but he’s been highly considered for years.

Do you think Shanny rates his players at the end of the season based on PFF stats?

What ever money your paying for these, you should instead take, and give it to LJP, let him blindfold you, and spin you around for 1 1/2 min., and have him kick you directly in the nuts.

Joe Gibbs was a 3x SB winning coach and he thought all of the following were good ideas-

trading a 3rd rounder and giving Mark Brunell a contract that averaged about $8 million a year, when he was about to get cut.

Trading away Franchise CB Champ Bailey AND a 2nd round pick for Clinton Portis (since when is the best CB in the league worth less than the 5th best RB in the league?)

Trading three picks to move up to draft Jason Campbell

Trading a 6th and a future 2nd rounder to move up 15 spots to draft Rocky McIntosh.

Look I disagree with a couple of Shanny’s decisions, keeping of 8 WR’s, Torain over a back who can play ST, not drafting a lineman until the 7th round, and resigning Brown. I don’t need to look at PFF stats, or STATS INC, to see that Brown is getting beat. And it is quite clear that Brown’s play is one of biggest weaknesses on this offense. And while this year it makes little difference, next year it could stunt the growth of whatever QB we end up drafting.

We have people in Redskins Nation who believe Brown has been good this year

Some are reporters, some coaches and some fans. In the poll we did, Brown won overwhelmingly, on who the fans felt was doing the best job of all our linemen so far this season(I know this isn’t saying too much), but I just think your selling this guy too short.

Is he what he used to be………..no, but has he improved his play from his injury riddled season in 2010, and become an important cog in this offense……….yes.

Seriously??

Joey Galloway was our starting receiver for about a quarter of the year last year, that doesn’t make him an important cog.

Rex Grossman is our starting QB, first over McNabb last year and now over Beck (or the idea of drafting one or signing V. Young). Does that mean that you are now okay with him?

Or are you simply saying that the starting RT is an important cog…even if he isn’t any good?

Yes

RT as the important cog, and since he was signed as a FA to be our RT, I consider him to be an important cog in our offense. If he was already on our team(like Heyer was when he beat out Jansen), I’ll go a different direction.

The idea that someone believed in him enough from what they saw in his injured plagued 2010, to give him a new contract, and cement him in as our starting RT leads me to believe he is an important cog, at least for the immediate future.

It amazes me how some of you have not noticed how he walks or hobbles at times. You can tell his hip is still not nearly 100 percent healthy. It would be nice if he were healthy so he could really show us what he has. To play as well as he has on a bum hip is pretty amazing to me.

Steveo

You told me last week how much you respected John Keim. Well, here is what Kein had to say about Brown:,

And give the tackles credit for a terrific effort for three quarters. It’s a shame how it ended for Trent Williams and Jammal Brown because they played well for the most part. Brown did a good job vs. DeMarus Ware in the first three quarters. Seemed like his feet were much more active than normal; he was bent more at the knees and not the waist, allowing him to move quicker and react better. At times Brown attacked Ware and didn’t let him get into his move. Other times he was patient and let Ware tip his hand before reacting. He and Williams also had good help on the times when Ware beat them inside. Williams used his athleticism to help slow Ware.

What is you take in this, also taking into account that he played well vs Arizona(which you said yourself)

by smutsboy1 on Sep 28, 2011 9:48 AM EDT up reply actions

I do respect Keim a lot, because he does watch film and looks at things like stance and waist bending etc.

but I’m not sure what he was watching. It was Jamaal Brown who got beat for a sack and a pressure right before half as that drive stalled out (Grossman still completed the ball while being pressured, but didn’t get a chance to look down field). And had Gano missed that 50 yarder part of the blame would have fallen on Brown. (I guess Keim isn’t wrong since it wasn’t Ware who beat him there, but he said he gave terrific effort for three quarters). Brown also consistently gets driven back on his pass block at the angle of the defenders choosing (it’s the anti-slide step approach), and while it doesn’t count as a sack or pressure because Brown ‘anchors’ before he reaches Grossman, it limits Grossman’s ability to roll to his right (not every play, but quite a few). That means Rex can’t roll to his strong side and he is forced to roll to the left side which is usually the defense’s strong side. For me there are too many plays like that, and that is unacceptable considering what we are paying Brown.

Next I thought Brown was pretty bad in the ground game, on 3 of the Redskins first 5 runs to the right Brown completely missed his man resulting in a -2 to 1 yard gain. Now obviously the whole line is to blame for the ground game futility, but Brown was among the leading culprits.

Finally, I really disagree with what I’ve been seeing (not just from Keim) about praising the shutting down of DeMarcus Ware, by Trent and Brown. Ware had like 9 pressures Monday to go along with the sack. That is a pretty big impact and just b/c Williams gave up pressures vs sacks doesn’t mean we should throw him a victory parade.

Football Outsiders Offensive Line Regular season totals, through Week 3 -

http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/ol. While this is a consolidation of performance over three games, it does give some idea of the OL’s play in the pass and run blocking compared to other NFL teams. The Skins are ranked 15th in pass protection and 16th in adjusted line yards (4.14/carry) that is slightly above the leagues 4.09 average. The Skins best performance was on the left end runs at 4.50 (versus NFL 4.02) and worse was on right end runs at 3.18 (versus NFL 3.52), but tackles are not the sole performers at the point of attack.

by Jefferson1935 on Sep 28, 2011 12:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I just did a post on the line play

but the problem with FO is they only look at sacks and intentional groundings, and completely gloss over hits and pressures.

As for the running stats, it is clear both sides are at fault, but the Redskins run more and have more sustained success running left. Also while it’s not broken down the fact that 24% of our runs have gone for no gain or negative yards is troubling, and I’m thinking primarily comes from the right side.

Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com

It is very easy to tell

a lot of people on HH have no idea what-so-ever about line play. Those of you who are comparing this line play, to those of the early 2000’s are not quite understanding the scheme.

This scheme is designed to block and area, not necessarily a man all the time. It’s slide protection on both the 30, 50 and 90 series. If you notice the play where Brown gave up a sack to the OLB, both OT’s were supposed to cut their men, as you saw both Brown and TW dive towards the feet of the defenders. This tells me that the route was supposed to be a 3-step, quick throw. Either the route got jumped, or Grossman went and changed the play, but didn’t change the blocking scheme. If that play were designed to be a 5 or 7 step drop, with longer developing routes, both of those tackles would have never went low like they did.

After re-watching that play 3-4 times, I blame that on either Grossman, of a missed line call by the C.

Brown got beat by Butler (that's the OLB you are talking about)

even if it was a cut block and the route got jumped, Brown failed, b/c he didn’t actually cut block the guy. Trent Cut block Ware and took him out of the play. If Brown actually cut blocks that guy, then Rex probably has at least enough time to throw the ball away to make it a 44 yard FG as opposed to a 50 yarder.

Brown got beat in both the run and pass game, he def. didn’t hold his own. Spencer (who isn’t nearly as good as Ware) gave him trouble on more than just the last play.

I just don't know how you are blaming JB on this

I thought he did a good job against Ware. The sack/fumble at the end of the game was not his fault. He pushed his man around the outside, like al good OT’s do, and when Grossman vacated the pocket, he was too stupid the throw the damn ball away, and too un-athletic to escape. He should have covered the damn ball up, and just slid if he knew he couldn’t outrun a 280+lb d-linemen.

I’m not saying this as an insult to the coaches, but that play wouldn’t have happened to Beck; or any other half-way decent athlete at QB.

Point is, Grossman, not the O-Line, lost us this game. He should have been picked 3x’s. He should have lost another fumble if the Dallas coaches were smart enough to challenge that one sack(he clearly lost that ball). We have seen the same Rex as always; turnover prone at the worst possible times in games. Bone-headed decisions in the red-zone, no freaking arm on the deep ball(he can barely reach 45 yards), and throwing off his back foot on the deep out(biggest no-no in football).

We are not getting far with this guy at QB…………………………it’s that simple. If you guys can’t see that by now, than I don’t know what else to tell you.

My problem is they paid him this money and all of that and he isn’t performing up to the contract. He didn’t last year and he hasn’t this year.
