Ask Revenge of the Birds

Hey Skins fane, Joe from Revenge of the Birds here for another week of interblog question asking.

We all know how this works, if there is anything you want to know about the Cardinals, ask away and I or anyone else from RotB who drops by will answer it. Feel free to start up one of these threads at our blog too.

Star-divide

Now for a couple of quick notes I'd like to get out of the way.

We are pleased with Kolb after week 1. With DA, Skelton, or Hall out there I don't think we win that game.

My basic thoughts on how the secondary played after getting torched by Cam Newton (did anyone expect that?), the secondary looked good in man coverage, but the zone coverage did not look very good. Having two corners making their first starts doesn't help either.

A lot of us still like Tim Hightower and wish him success during his time in Washington, besides next Sunday of course. Vonnie Holliday has also been a nice addition for us as depth.

Keep an eye out for Daryl Washington, he was a beast in week 1. He had 8 tackles, two half-sacks, and an Interception. Should have been two, but what turned out to be a completely legal hit wound up being flagged for roughing the passer.... Probably one of the fastest linebackers in the NFL too.

I saw Washington down with a bit of an injury against the Panthers.

Any lingering effects to that?

Which of our CBs would you like to see on Fitz?

Which of our players are you most worried about, in relation to their matchup against your players?

Who covers Sanatana Moss? It looked like Carolina picked on Peterson a bit, but the other rook gave up some plays too. Is a savvy veteran vs a green rook going to cause problems for you guys?

Is Porter going to play? I know Wilson, Dockett, and Campbell can get at the QB, but is there anyone else generating consistent pressure?

Finally, who would you rather have as head coach, Whisenhunt or Shanahan?

Washington's injury doesn't sound serious and it looks like he is going to play.

I would like to see whoever the worst/smallest corner you have is on Fitz.

Brian Orakpo against Levi Brown.

Yeah, with the corners their lack of experience is an issue. It really hurt that Toler went down in the Preseason, and he looked like a great fit for Horton’s defense. I’m guessing that Peterson will cover Moss.

Not sure about Porter, guessing he will play. But a lot of people on RotB are high on O’Brien Schofield. He is a second year player who was graded before the draft as being good enough to go in the late first or early second round, but he blew out his knee during the senior bowl and slipped to the fourth round. He has some good pass rush ability and got pressure on Newton a few times when he was subbed for Porter (got a sack that he shared with Washington on one play).

We are happy with Whiz, although there is some frustration after last year and the QB debacle he got us to a Super Bowl which earns him some trust. No problem with having Shanny as a HC though because he is a good offensive mind and he has proven that he can take a team to the big game.

Washington hasn’t been practicing but should play on sunday. With the short off season and a new defensive scheme every missed practice is valuable time lost.

Doesn’t matter who you put on Fitz. If it’s only one guy you will pay for it sooner or later.

Orakpo & Kerrigan versus Levi Brown and Brandon Keith (LT and RT respectively).

The other guy is AJ Jefferson. He is not a rookie. He was an undrafted rookie free agent signed last year. Got some play time late in the season. Last two games I think. Looked good then. Looked great in preseason. Has been a starter since camp opened. Don’t know who they will put on Moss but I hope they play more man coverage. It was the zone coverage that hurt us last week. Our corners play well in pretty well in man.

I’ve heard nothing to suggest Joey Porter would not play. Only injuries from last week were Daryl Washington (muscle strain) and Larod Stephens-Howling (wrist). Don’t know what’s the status with LSH. Hope he’s ready for sunday. He’s our kick returner and star special teamer on coverage too. Schofield has been getting pressure. The hope is that he can overtake Porter as the starter.

Whisenhunt. He is the best coach the team has had since coming to the desert. Best coach since Coryell actually. There has been some question about Whisenhunt being too loyal to Russ Grimm (our O line play has generated some ill will his way) but that pales compared to the nepotism of Shanahan. Not sure how comfortable I’d be with a father & son coaching tandem.

Do you expect Rex Grossman to do to you what he did to the Jints?

Do you think your Offensive Line can withstand our pass rush, and if not how do you think Kolb will handle the pressure?

How is your run game? Are you expecting large holes against our Defensive front 7?

by TheDeepBall on Sep 14, 2011 10:59 PM EDT reply actions

I don't think Grossman will have as big of a game as Newton did

With Newton, you also have to defend his mobility. And there is less film on him than Grossman so teams are still trying to learn what Newton will do in the NFL, but with Grossman people know his tendencies a little better.

The offensive line did a decent job in pass protection last week, but Levi Brown our left tackle (who most people on RotB think should be moved to guard) struggles in pass protection. Kolb’s mobility helps him here, and I think he will start scrambling around a bit although he did bail too early a few times.

As for the run game, Beanie had 90 yards on 18 carries and he looks healthy this year. The run game should be good if the Cardinals commit to it.

Good questions.

It’s too early to be sure with the Cardinals. I have concern about our tackles going against your pass rushers. Kolb needs to work in the pocket a bit more before scrambling. I think by the 2nd half last weak he was not counting much on the tackles keeping him safe. He has shown an ability to keep the play alive. Check the highlight of the 48 yard TD to tight end Jeff King from last week.

How good is your front 7? The Cardinals punched holes early against the Panthers. They were starting two rookie defensive tackles. Don’t know how well our run game will look this year yet. It looked good in preseason for all the help that is.

Do you guys

believe Kolb when he says the Redskins are a good defense?

Also, do you think the Cardinals will look at last year’s Eagles footage to gameplan against our defense? Because Kolb didn’t look so hot in the game he replaced Vick in—though granted he almost got the game winning drive.

Question: Woody, what happened to the ball movement? Answer: I think our defense was pretty solid tonight. We held them to under 200 points so we did our job on that end.

I don't know enough about the Skins defense and how much they have improved from last year to say they are good

But they looked good in week 1. Lets see if they can keep it up.

100%

With Kerrigan and Rak….2 above average pass rushers on the ends….QBs are now on tilt. Our NT has a knack for swimming past centers as well.

Shanahan said Hightower gave a lot of info which does not show up on tape.

How do cards fans like the Kolb trade? I feel like you guys got robbed

A lot of people felt like we got robbed at first

I did not like losing DRC, and with the injury to Toler our secondary lost a lot of depth. But Kolb has made believers out of most of us now.

6'2" 230 lbs.

The Cardinals had him listed right behind Dan Williams (our NT and 1st round pick) on their draft board a year ago. They really hit it big getting both those guys. Daryl Washington may be flat out the best player on our defense. As for the Kolb deal, we paid what the market demanded. Time will tell if it was worth it or not.

On the podcast they do on the Cardinals website

The beat writer Darren Urban said that Daryl Washington IS the best player on our defense right now.

Looks like Washington might miss the game now

He is still questionable for the game, but he hasn’t practiced all week. Could go, but it depends on what he can do tomorrow I guess.
