I Hope to Heck, We See Beck(Today)

You know my philosophy; with greater risk, comes greater reward, and so goes the story of John Beck

I had my doubts(and obviously still do), about the Redskins QB situation coming into the preseason.  I knew what to expect out of Grossman, but Beck was an unknown.  The intrigue that surrounded the former 2nd round pick was the talk of the preseason, and if nothing more, it brought a level of excitement to Redskins Park, that we have not seen since Jason Campbell's rookie year.

I was quick to bash the "Beck as a starter" rumors that flew around this offseason, but who wouldn't do the same.  All I can remember from this guy was the horrible rookie year he had when the Dolphins went 1-15 back in 2007.  Well, I saw something in preseason  I didn't remember seeing from Beck as a rookie: A strong arm, accuracy and mobility.  I also saw that this guy wasn't afraid to take some risks.  Now, we all know that if you don't take risks, you don't usually see high reward.  This can be both good and bad.  Look at Campbell if you want any further explaination of this.  Also look at Brett Favre if you want the opposite end of the spectrum.

I want a guy on my team that has the tools to succeed; both physically and mentally.  Grossman is lacking in both catagories.  Beck is, well, still kind of an unknown, but we do know this:  He has the arm to stretch the ball 70 yards downfield.  He has the legs to extend plays, and he isn't afraid to tuck and run if he needs to.  He also has the accuracy and intelligence to produce, and the leadership, and respect that you would expect from your starting QB.

Could he have meltdowns where he throws a bone-headed interception into double coverage; sure, but he also has the ability to hit a streaking Armstrong on a 60 yard bomb down the right hash.  This is something you can't expect to see Grossman do.  Oh, and remember all those play-action bootlegs that Mike and Kyle like to run?  Don't expect to see many with Grossman under center.

I would rather not have to taylor my offense around the limitations of a QB, and that is just what is going to happen with Rex.  With Beck under center, you may not always know what your going to get, but it will at least it will not take away from some of the strengths of the Shanny's play calling abilities.

So, as a fan, I'm hoping to heck, that we see some Beck!

Peace and love to all on this 10th anniv. of 9/11!  God Bless, and HTTR!

If we see Beck that means:

1. We are getting slaughtered or
2. Grossman is hurt or
3. We are absolutely killing the Giants

I will go with #3.
The Redskins will be up 48-0 in the 3rd quarter so Shanahan brings in Beck for some mop up work.

If Grossman throws a boneheaded int. or coughs the ball up on a sack

I would not be surprised to see Mike make a QB switch. I think that Rex is Kyles boy but that the leash is short.

This post is dumb

Rex is a solid qb. Look at how he performed last year. He will be better this year. Also if Rex stinks so bad compared to beck. Why would they go with Rex?

Why would they go with Rex?

I keep asking myself the same question.

I don't care who is the starting Quarterback as long as they play solid

with that said. I do like the zip that Beck puts on the ball , the fact that he is more mobile than Rex and that he has the ability to hit the receivers in stride unlike Rex . There is nothing worse than a receiver on a crossing route or quick slant having to slow down , stop or go across his body to make the catch. It defeats the purpose of the route. IMO from the limited amount of play that I have seen from Beck, I think he throws the better deep ball. Just seems like when we have a receiver on a Go route they always have to slow down and wait for the ball and by then the DB has time to recover and make a play on the ball. Hopefully that changes this season.

Still sticking to your guns after seeing Grossman's level of play today?

I thought he did pretty well, minus the sporadic mental lapses that the offensive line had resulting in sacks. He did fumble, but I blame that entirely on TWill for wiffing on JPP and letting him strip sack Grossman.

He did do well

and that is historically how he operates; good game(s), followed by some complete head scratchers.

Look, I’ve done it before, and i’m certainly not afraid to do it again: If Grossman continues to play well, and runs this offense with some efficiency, and he shows the leadership to put this team on his back, and lead us on a game winning drive(s)(this is something we haven’t seen in DC in years), I’ll gladly eat crow, and admit it in a post that I was wrong.

Other things we haven't seen in years happened yesterday too

A comfortable lead at the end of the game and a great two minute offense capped off by a touchdown to end the second half. If Grossman can give us a game winning drive this season, I’ll buy his jersey (from one of those fake sites though). He impressed me yesterday, but nothing he does this year will make me not want to take a QB in the first next year.

What if what he does this year

knocks us out of the running for an elite prospect at QB next year? Do we continue fighting the good fight with Grossman and Beck?

Yes.

If we can get 2 or 3 good years out of either of them we can wait until 2013 or 2014 for a QB. What do you think of Aaron Murray? He seems to have short release and a good arm, with some decent mobility to boot.

What do you tell the other players?

Sorry guys, I don’t want to put you in the best position to win so we’re going with the other guy. You’re playing for absolutely nothing, we want the lowest round pick so don’t try and be careful not to get hurt because we don’t want to win

Tiller

Please I’m begging for you to show me his Rex is so bad. And you will never explain to me why the shanahans would start Rex over beck if there was such a great difference between the two. Rex is not some big name veteran. He is considered a bum so mike and Kyle would have no problem not playing him if beck was so clearly better. Your whole argument is weak

by CommunistKevin on Sep 11, 2011 9:28 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

IT all based on history

and what Beck is able to do(mind you in the preseason), compared to Grossman.

I don’t want to take away from the victory yesterday…………………….it was great!

but, to support what I was saying, I’ll give you my points:
Grossman has 40 td’s and 40 int’s in 34 career starts – this is horrible
Fumbles – do I need to even go here?
Mobility – It’s beyond terrible
Arm Strength on the deep ball – You saw it yesterday, it’s not very good

As for why the Shanny’s went wirth Rex: He’s Kyles best friend. They used to be roomates on the road when he was in Houston. You don’t think Kyle has some say in this?

Anyways, Rex played well today, but I still feel the offensive is limited. You say this on some of the called bootlegs, and also when the pocket started to collapse on the side. Rex does not like to step up into the pocket, instead choosing to throw off his back foot. He is shorter, and has a low release point too, and gets a lot of passes batted down.

My assessments were based on his past history. Maybe he has matured. Maybe he really likes and understands this offense, and feels comfortable in it.

If he continues the solid play, I promise you, I will eat crow.

Yeah

I get that his numbers for his career are not that good. He only started one full year. That was a few years ago and since he has been here he has put up solid numbers, granted his fumbling has been an issue. Becks numbers are bad in limited time as well and Rex out performed him in the preseason. Rex has thrown for 300 yards in three of his four starts here now. Give the guy a break. You act like beck is so superior but it is simply not backed up with any real evidence besides that he is more mobile and stronger arm.

by CommunistKevin on Sep 12, 2011 3:48 PM EDT up reply actions   2 recs

I don't act as though Beck is superior at all

I said I’d rather take a chance with an unknown, simply because we already know what we have in Grossman, and up to this point in his career, it hasn’t been great.

Thats my point. It’s really pretty simple.

We also know that neither one of these guys are the future of our franchise, so don’t read too much into this.

Want some interesting reading?

Check out the Romo hate over on the Cowboys site. We thought Tiller hated Rex? The are crucifying Romo over there. Not that don’t love every minute of it. It’s funny. The only way today could have gone better was if we had beaten the cowboys, in Dallas.

Tiller, I do think Rex showed something more in maturity in coming back After the fumble and closing it out with the drive that Gaffney scored on. Can you admit to that?

by MAJSkinsfan on Sep 12, 2011 1:28 AM EDT reply actions

Yes

I admit he played pretty well after the first two drives.

I’m still not buying. I’m move slightly to cautiously optimistic……………………hows that?

by travisjh86 on Sep 12, 2011 10:44 AM EDT up reply actions

He was good

He took too long on a few passes that resulted in sacks, and he had a fumble. Aaron Rogers played great; Grossman played pretty well.

I agree

Grossman wil do “alright”. Thats about the best we can expect from him throughout a full season.

I hope you are able to see where my fustration lies here. 19 years, 12 different starting QB’s, none of whom were very good(some were alright, but far from great). I truely envy the Patriots, Colts(well I did envy them), Chargers, Eagles(during the McNabb decade), Packers, Giants. They have had stability and good QB play for years, and they win because of it. At this point I don’t even need great, I’ll settle for good(ie. Flacco, Ryan, Freeman etc). I just want some stability, and a guy with ability and a high celing.

Being a Redskins fan for over 25 years now, is this too much to ask? I was young when we had Theisman, and didn’t know the difference between good and bad QB’s. Since then, I quickly became familiar with the word AVERAGE!

Unlike you, I am cautiously optimistic not because of the QB situation but rather because of the OL. We

have yet to see the OL perform at an adequate level in the regular season in the running game. While Hightower does show some upside, he still needs the OL to open up the holes. I missed the first 24 minutes of the game so
I don’t know what happen in the 3 and out series.

I'm that way because of both the QB and OL

I don’t have a ton of confidence in either just yet.

I'm not saying Beck is better outright

I just know, from watching football for the last 6 years, what Rex Grossman gives us, and to this point, it hasn’t been all that good. Neither Beck or Grossman are the face-of-the-franchise(we all know this). They are both stop-gap players.

All I suggested was that we go with the unknown guy, who has a little better mobility, accuracy and arm, over the guy who we all know is a turnover waiting to happen.

Sorry, you can argue and be as mad at me as you want, but until he proves otherwise, we all know thats what Grossman is known for.

Naw

I’ll give credit where credit is do. And I told you, I’ll be happy to eat a big plate of crow, if Grossman goes on to have a good full season.

I’m just not getting too excited, because we all know he’s replacement level.

Look at it this way, even if Grossman has a pro bowl year, and we have an opportunity(whether by trade, or by pick alone) to get a top QB in 2012, we definitly will.

Dude, Chill out

He is 2-2 as a Redskins starter.

I’ve stated reason why I am not a believer just yet. I’ll hold final judgement until at least 8 games in. For me to “hate” would be to critize without providing any backing or reason for my “hating”. I have always provided reason why I am skeptical of Grossman. I have never thrown out a blanket statement without giving cause for how I feel the way I do.

Any good football fan, who has followed the game for the last 8 years, can see, and understand my concern about him. I am not some random voice that has just come out of the closet to critize a QB that doesn’t deserve any critizism.

Don't tell me to chill out.

When you said “I keep asking myself the same question” in response to Kevin asking why Mike Shannohn would go with Grossman, that is you just being a hater when he clearly had the better preseason, has the better starting record, has thrown more than one touchdown pass in his career Ect.

that is you just being a hater when he clearly had the better preseason, has the better starting record, has thrown more than one touchdown pass in his career Ect

This is just being stupid.

You can’t compare the two statistically over their careers, because Beck was pulled less than half way through his rookie season on one of the worst teams in NFL history. He was never given another starting shot.

And looking at the preseason, don’t forget Beck missed a game with a groin strain, so his time was cut a little short. There is no way you can say Grossman CLEARLY had a better preseason.

I can use the same BS you did with Beck, by saying Grossman has thrown 37 more INT’s than Beck in his career. Is that Fair?

So, Chill Out!

Wrong

He is not replacement level. He is better than a standard replacement would be. If Rex finishes as an all pro and a rating over 90 it would be dumb to take a qb unless one fell in our lap
