Terrell Pryor in the NFC East?

Hi guys, I wrote this piece back in July at BGN and with the supplemental draft coming up I wanted to share this. Enjoy

Star-divide

It's been over a week now that news of Terrelle Pryor's and fellow buckeye players received improper benefits, costing Ohio State, teammates, Jim Tressel, and himself. He's a young, physical, exciting player with his arms and feet. But his mouth and ego can't be run over like opposing defenders. His lack of maturity and selfish nature might have cost him a shot at a NFL career with the combination of his ability to play quarterback at the next level.

He is taking steps towards saving his career at least. Hiring Drew Rosenhaus was a necessary move, Pryor is coming out of a bad situation at Ohio State and while I am not a fan of Rosehaus, he is extremely good at his job, he has helped athletes out of questionable situations in the past. By teaming up with Rosenhaus, Pryor's NFL chances has improved. His best shot is the NFL supplemental draft, which can only occur until after the lockout. But at least he has committed to going through the supplemental draft. His gifted ability is intriguing, however very few will take a flyer on him due to mechanics, reading the field, leadership, and now this. However, one team that can be a perfect fit for both parties is in our division....

The Washington Redskins and Terrelle Pryor are perfect fits for each other, I'll start with Pryor.

First off, Pryor will be able to work with a Mike Shanahan, a quarterback coach that will be to coach him up. While Shanahan hasn't been that legend we saw in 1998, he has groomed quarterbacks pretty successfully. Second he'll have a basis of a running game. Ryan Torain may not be a superstar, but is a solid work horse. For only starting 8 games, he racked up 742 yards and 4.5 yards per carry, a solid number. A running game is a rookie's best friend and while we can all agree the Redskins don't have much, they do have a basis for a running game. Third, he does have weapons to throw to, the biggest one to highlight is two tight-ends, which are key for any rookie.  Chris Cooley is a top 15 TE, arguably top 10. Fred Davis stepped up big time when Cooley went down in 2009, racking up +500 and 6 TD'S, he was a real spark for their offense in 09. In 2010, his role was reduced with Cooley healthy, but did well with limited time with 21 grabs, 316 yards, and 3 TD's. I'd make a lot of sense if the Redskins run a lot of double tight-end sets next year, offering a saftey blanket for Pryor, who also relied on his tight end Jake Stoneburner often, Stoneburner having a career year this year.

Why it makes sense for the Washington Redskins

First off, their offense needs to turn around. As much of a McNabb fan I am, I will attest he is no longer a viable option as a starting quarterback. Teams are probably better off using him as only a stop gap. With McNabb under center most of the season the Redskins were abysmal. They ranked 18th in the league in terms of total yards per game (335.9), 20th in 1st downs per game (18.4), 31st in 3rd downs made (61) out of 208 attempts making a percentage of 29%, 24th in ToP per game with 28:50, and 20th in turnovers with -4. They need an identity and a leader on offense.

Which brings me to point two, John Beck and Rex Grossman are not the answers. They are not faces of the franchise, they are not field generals, they are decent backup options (I'm being nice). There is no future for this team and good coaches and franchises have those. Mike and Kyle needs to find one and one is available. They like to have a strong arm quarterback that throws the ball down the field and outside the hashes. they like to have an mobile quarterback that can they can roll out to make big plays and that can make a play on their own. John Elway and Jay Cutler are prime examples. Pryor fits their mold like oreos and milk, Pryor has racked up 2,164 yards and 17 touchdowns in 3 years as well as a 4.33 40 yard dash at Ohio State's Spring Training. As a runner he is quicker and more elusive than Cam Newton while being just as powerful. He is up there with those athletic quarterbacks like Cam Newton, Tim Tebow, Jake Locker and Colin Kaepernick. Throwing the ball he has over 6,000 yards in the past three years with a 57:26 INT ratio. He’s had over 60% completion and double digit TD’s.

Finally, he puts less pressure on the offensive line. The Redskins offensive line is near embarrassing and well as inexperienced. Wait what? Yeah that surprised me too. The Redskins offensive line has gotten considerably younger, younger in fact than our very own Eagles according to JimmyK and his Blogging the Beast. But the fact that they allowed 49 sacks last year in unacceptable. Pryor's athletic ability takes pressure off the offensive line and allows more plays to occur like a Big Ben or Mike Vick.

In summary, it's like hooking up two of your friends that you know will be great together. Pryor will get an opportunty to start with them and develop his game with the Shanahan's. There will probably be some growing pains and might end up as a development year for them with Pryor, but it befits Pryor with starting experience and they aren't kidding anyone with competing in the NFC East with Beck or Grossman. In reality there is either developing the future with Pryor, which will pay dividends later or signing a free agent vet like Orton or Alex Smith. If they decide to do neither of these options then truly they will be better off losing a season in a lockout.
