Recap Redskins Training Camp - Thursday 8/3

As announced previously in this space, XFINITY from Comcast has generously agreed to support the best NFL community around -- us!  As part of that effort, XFINITY will be sponsoring our Redskins’s training camp coverage as well as a variety of special editorial and interactive features on our site between now and the end of the 2011 NFL season.

  • Ryan Torain sprained his hand and is getting X-rays taken for pre-cautionary reasons
  • Kevin Barnes intercepted a ball from QB Marc Verica. (UVA)
  • Chris Horton getting bulk of snaps at SS with Landry on PUP
  • Jarvis Jenkins has been a wrecking crew on run and passing plays.
  • Haslett said he will put Cofield and Bowen right with the first team tomorrow, no easing them in
  • John Beck is now wearing #12...Malcolm Kelly #14
  • Brandon Banks was sidelined with knee swelling
  • Shanahan hopes Sav Rocca can be here by Monday

Star-divide

  • Carlos Rogers is looking VERY forward to week 9 vs Redskins. Shouldn't he be looking forward to the other 31 teams that blew him off too?
  • Kerrigan is still not practicing in team drills with bone bruise on knee. Skins are being extra careful. Should be back in 2 days.
  • The crowds were extremely light today. Here's side view.
  • Eagles had two injuries in practice today: DT's Mike Patterson and Trevor Laws. Unsure how long they will be out yet.

XFINITY from Comcast is a proud support of Hogs Haven. With XFINITY, you’ll get your Redskins games as part of over 120 NFL games XFINITY provides in HD, as well as On Demand game recaps from every NFL game every week, lightning fast Internet speeds, and stunning HD. doughty should play linebacker

he is faster then most lbs and can tackle good. that way we wouldnt get burned by rbs as much and he can sneak in and get the qb

by munson21502 on Aug 3, 2011 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions

The only reason horton got playing time ever

Was because the first time he got on the field, the ball fell into his hands twice (1 pick which was thrown right to him, and one fumble he was in the right place for), mostly out of luck. And zorn was dumb enough to start him because of that.

a poster says that Doughty is far better than Horton and you say

then he would be on the roster right now…

and i point out that there is a reason that he isn’t on the roster and that is that he is a free agent.

Doughty is far better than Horton and that has been evident for quite some time. you can’t say that Horton is better than Doughty b/c one is on the roster and the other isn’t.

So true

Doughty is a pretty good BACKUP strong safety.

It’s funny how every player on the redskins secondary had a glaring weakness last year, except landry.

los can’t catch. kareem moore can’t tackle, cover, or really do anything useful. Doughty isn’t that good in coverage. Dhall can’t tackle (though he improved), and got burned all the time. And those were the starters.

I'm liking this defensive line

About 100 times more than last year. Cofield and Bowen are promising to me and everything I’ve heard from Jenkins sounds positively wonderful. Our defense seems to be much improved.

I laughed when I heard Bickel compaining about the lack of fan presence at y'all's training camp earlier today.

FWIW, I think you guys will better last year’s record by a couple games; 8-8 at best.

you guys majorly upgraded your defense, WR corps.

OL needs help, QB situation is atrocious, but for the most part, you’re finally doing what you should’ve been doing for years, getting better (except QB) at the positions needed the most.

In fact, it’s possible that our corps AS A WHOLE could be better than Philly’s. Lesser known doesn’t mean lesser talent. Stay tuned.

by CJHutch on Aug 3, 2011 5:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I think you're wrong but you at least make a case for your position

DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, Jason Avant, Riley Cooper, Sinorice Moss, Deandre Brown, Johnny Lee Higgins, camp bodies

Brandon Banks, Anthony Armstrong, Jabar Gaffney, Santana Moss, Malcolm Kelly, Roydell Williams, new draft picks

While you have decent guys across the board, I feel our 1-3 guys easily best yours, not to mention rank up there against most teams’ 1-3.

Look, I live here and I listen to 106.7 daily, which gives me the chance to learn more about your players… I like AA and BB; those guys impress me the most. I feel like their upside is awesome. I just think Santana is a quality WR on the downside of his career, Gaffney is a good WR if he has a good QB to throw to him and is in the right system (see: rest of career prior to last 2 yrs), Malcolm is [still] an unknown, just like your draft picks.

I think the deciding factor your QB play; I know McNabb/Kolb/Vick has certainly helped ours.

I’m hoping they dont let him leave without a contract.I think he will be a good fit next to Fletcher, and regain his all pro form. Hoping they can sign hayden too.I know Buchannan will be back week 4 and everyone seems to be sold on Barnes(myself excluded),but you can never have too much depth and competition. If they had that much confidence in Barnes they wouldnt have re-signed buchannan in the first place.

They may be in the market for a LB if they dont bring back Tinismoa (dont think thats right spelling),but he is OLB.The raiders are set at LB also, so his best fit would most likely be here,at least i hope so.

Rob Jackson

Been hearing lots of positives from camp about RJ. Does that mean Lorenzo has some risk of being cut? Not sure his ST work is enough if he is not 2nd on depth chart somewhere. Or maybe they will tell him to lose 50 lbs. and become a punter?

by hempstead on Aug 3, 2011 2:58 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

I think he is safe....

he can contribute to depth at any of the LB positions and I think he has the potential to become a team leader.

by MagicHat on Aug 3, 2011 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Speaking of cuts, Ryan O'Halloran on Redskins Nation

said he thought there was a chance that Anthony Armstrong would get cut. He based that on the idea of the top four being Moss, Gaffney, Hankerson, Stallworth. Somebody else, like Kelly, Paul or Robinson at #5.
That would surprise me. For one thing, many on HH don’t think Stallworth is a lock. And I’d think AA would beat out any of the others. But we’ll see.

by Donnio1234 on Aug 3, 2011 3:57 PM EDT reply actions

armstrong is our best wr

not sure how he would get cut… the guy woulda had a few more tds and alot more hards if he was hit every time he was wide open downfeld.

by munson21502 on Aug 3, 2011 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions

besides moss of corse

armstong really helped moss last year though. thats why im so upset about not getting a better QB. we could have a good passing attack imo

by munson21502 on Aug 4, 2011 9:21 AM EDT up reply actions

I hope its Hank, Paul, Robinson, Kelly, Armstrong, Moss (not in any order)

I dont like gaffney or stallworth, banks and terrence austin dont do anything huge for me either (due to the new kickoff rules and fact they’re both #3 recievers like moss and armstrong and robinson)

by alwaysremember21 on Aug 3, 2011 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he would have to really regress

to get cut for Stallworth. Stallworth didn’t play at all in 2009. Last year he played in eight games totaling two – count em two – receptions. If stallworth makes the team at all I’ll be surprised.

Formerly KS and CS

by ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown on Aug 3, 2011 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Crazy

Sounds like mud-on-the-wall journalism to me. With this youth movement, it would be crazy to cut AA for a guy who’s career trajectory is going the opposite way. With our luck, Dallas would pick him up right away, and he’d kill us twice a year for the next 5. Stallworthless has been just thatbfor 3 years at least.

by CJHutch on Aug 3, 2011 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions

A receiver needy team.

Rookie year has 44 catches, 800 + yards and 3 TDs. Top 5 in YPC.

Yeah, Anthony Armstrong is definitely not safe.

How does he not make the team? He’s one of the few proven commodities on this team.

RECEIVING CORPS

Moss, Anderson and Kelly will be the three top receivers with Kelly becoming one of the best blocking wideouts in the whole league. Gaffney and Hankerson will be the rotating group, with Banks making it due to his game breaking ability as a returner. I think Banks will bring back at least 3 or 4 to the house this season and the Skins will be one of the top in the league with starting field position. The vets are here strictly to run good routes for the QB competition. I was surprised to hear Moss throw out Clemens’ name in an interview tonight on Redskins Nation with Larry Micheals. I still think it is Beck’s job to hold.

Sounded like he was talking

about just recently working with him as the free agents were waiting to get onto the field. The question was who he preferred throwing to him Beck or Grossman and he started to avoid the question all together, then mentioned some success w/ Grossman from last year, and then out of nowhere started talking about Clemens and him developing some chemistry working out with the free agents. I just thought it was kind of strange. Maybe just didn’t want to wade into the question at all.

Doughty SUCKS D__K!

I can’t believe we re-signed him. He sucks so so so much. He’s basically Linda Lovelace with a helmet. REMEMBER the game against Houston, OMG!!! I could have made that play. I made that play on a consistent basis in elementary school actually. If we are going to become an elite franchise once again we can’t settle for the mediocre anymore.

by Skinner99 on Aug 3, 2011 10:27 PM EDT reply actions

The NFL Network used the replay of that catch to death. Buchanon was supposed to have helped out on the

pass coverage on that play and a FS with a 40" vertical might have broken it up. If the pass rusher would have been a hair sooner it would have been a sack.

In our system

The guy is the perfect back up SS. Jim makes a good point: remember the match up. I would take Andre Johnson over EVERY SINGLE SS in the league, including Polamalu. Our SS has to be a physical guy who basically plays like a LB, except that they are normally one-on-one with the ball carrier.

And I’m sorry, but I doubt too many elite franchises have superstar back up SSs

CAP

What’s our Cap Number at now? We need another ILB, CB and OL. I’d like to see a starter at ILB and OL, plus a nickle CB. Do we have the Cap space for that?

by capdog on Aug 3, 2011 10:40 PM EDT reply actions

I'm not positively sure where we are at

But I think 15 million left is a safe number, (someone correct me if I’m longer). Where we are at with the market, no more big money contracts are being given, so I would figure we are safe even if we signed the best FA’s available, although I’m indifferent about the idea. I think Capers at LG and Riley at ILB may be an interesting experiment for the year. A nickel/dime CB (depending on how Buchanon plays after his suspension) I’m not against, although I think Kevin Barnes should be able to fit the role fine.

by BigOLinemen on Aug 3, 2011 10:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Barnes

Don’t know why we would put money into Buchanon when we knew he was going to be out 4 games, so I guess Barnes will get his shot. Not sold on Riley or Capers but this is the year to take a look I guess.

Joe "Jake" Jacoby for the Hall of Fame!

by capdog on Aug 3, 2011 10:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the staff liked Buchanon a lot

And I bet people are tired, but I always go back to his coverage on Reggie Wayne, which shows how good this guy can be. Barnes has his chance to win the nickel spot, but if not, they have a reliable guy in Buchanon for the next few years.

And I’m not sold on Riley or Capers either, but I think they are worth the experiment at their spots. I’m not against an ILB for the right price, like a Channing Crowder who got cut for being insane, not a bad ILB. As for Capers, I don’t know if there are any good remaining FA options, and his weight is much better for G than Licht’s is.

by BigOLinemen on Aug 3, 2011 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions

more concerned w/ Tackle

I am much more concerned with options at tackle and I’m a huge Sooner fan, but is Brown really gonna be able to stay healthy all season? Is Capers able to play both guard and tackle or should he just focus on one spot. What about Oldenburg? Can he play at all? I’d like to see another lineman to help shore up the front so Capers can focus on either guard or tackle. Prefer a starting guard so Capers can focus as back up Tackle at both left and right side, then stash one on the practice squad for emergency situation. I like Crowder or Tatupu, because I see Blades strictly a special teams ace.
