WR Corps is a Pleasent Surprise
Last season I was highly unimpressed with the Skins WR Corps. Moss and Armstrong were the only contributors. Joey Galloway was possibly a worst WR signing than David Patten.
However this season I feel that the skins WR corps is as good as the Giants especially since they let Steve Smith go. I think that they are pretty deep. Santana Moss when healthy is as consistent and explosive. The only knock on his game is not his fault, being that his lack of size doesn't make him a redzone threat.
It was a kind of a head shaker when I heard the Skins trade Jarmon for Gaffeny. I saw him as a journeyman receiver that wasn't worth trading a good lineman like Jarmon. Boy was I proven wrong though. Gaffeny's biggest skill set IMO is to make sure when he catches the ball he is past the chains for a first down. To many times last year and in years previous the skins receivers got tackled just in front of the first down marker.
Anthony Armstrong as one of the better feel good stories in the NFL. I thought after is nearly 1,000 yards receiving last season that he would come into this season possibly complacent. Again I was proven wrong. Armstrong still shows that he has excellent hands, runs good routes, and is one of the top 3 or 4 fastest players on the team.
Lenoard Hankerson has yet to show his potential in the pre-season, but I am sure he will sooner that later show why he was the most hyped Skins draft pick in 2011.
Terrance Austin shows the ability to get open, good hands, and is a potential deep threat.

Dont forget about stallworth
I think we are using him wrong….he should be used kinda like we use moss out of the slot instead of the outside. I wouldnt mind picking up another young wide out though after alot of teams make some cuts….the raiders got a couple of young wideouts that may not make the final roster

Just a comment or two...
Gaffney had his two best seasons last year in Denver. Jarmon wasn’t going to go anywhere on this team. The switch to 3-4 doomed him.
Hankerson had decent seasons while at Miami. That was college. He also had a rep for dropping passes. What made Hankerson a hot property was his performance in the Senior Bowl. He’s still got a rep for dropping passes and has yet to flash what he showed in the Senior Bowl. IF he gets his concentration in gear and catches the ball BEFORE deciding where to run he can be a good one.
Austin I agree will be a good one similar to Armstrong last year. He’s in an “I won’t be denied” mode this year.
Hankerson also brooke Michael Irvin’s single season touchdown record at Miami. T.O. has had a problem with drops his whole career, but he is 2nd all time for TD receptions behind Jerry Rice. He is also 5th all time in yards. Hankerson i believe has better hands in general than Owens. Hankerson’s problem seems to be focus. I have also read that he only practices hard on about half of the reps he gets in practice. So it looks like he just has to learn how to be a professional. He has to realize that he will no longer often be the best player on the field like he was often times in college and that talent alone won’t get him success. If Hankerson can get the intangibles of the game the sky is the limit for him

Well...
I sure wouldn’t make comparisons between a raw rookie and T.O. and Jerry Rice. He may or may not develop to be a professional receiver although the odds are good he will….at least better than Malcolm Kelly. Now there’s a comparison you can make. Hankerson has shown flashes and being a “high” draft pick they aren’t going to can him over a few drops. Now it’s a whole different story if he continues the drops and/or screws up his practices. Last thing Shanahan will put up with is sloppy practices from some rookie.

I was merely saying that even the best receivers in NFL history drop passes. I was not comparing T.O. talent to Hankerson.

gaffney
i was actually really happy when we made this trade! i had gaffney on my fantasy team and the guy was consistent! i only needed a wr 3 that could keep sustained pts every week and this guy had wr 2 numbers some weeks!
We still have the worst WR corps in the NFC East
Eagles – Jackson, Macklin, Smith – Far better than what we have. Young, explosive and fairly complete as a whole.
Cowboys – Austin, Bryant – This is one scarry combo. This may rank up there as one of the best 1-2 combos in the NFL.
Giants – Nicks, Manningham – Nicks is a star in the league, and Manningham is really starting to come into his own. They have decent depth and size too.

i disagree
you need to add cooley and davis.
that corp is better then the giants. i think we are better then most at WR. we have a unit as apose to individual stars

Child Please
The post says “WR corps is a pleasent surprise”, not WR corps and TE’s" are a pleasant surprise". Come on man. I’m a fan too, but we have to start being realists about this team. No where in this post were TE’s brought up. Now you just want to throw them in? I’m responding to the OP about what they wrote. I’m not adding in my own little caveats to make us look better.
We are still far behind the teams in our division when it comes to our WR’s. Even if you want to add TE’s to the mix, Cooley is behind JW, and prob BC.

we have recieving TE's.
so they have to be included. Our top 2 recievers were moss and cooley.

Thats not what the OP was posting about though
It’s going based off just a teams WR corps, which is why we are still lacking in that area.

i see your point
I believe we have a deeper core. maybe not as talented, but as effecient

It's basically taking your top 5 WR's
and comparing them to other teams top 5. I would say we have great depth. For us, I’d use the word potential.

Manningham next to Gaffeny or Armstrong is a push to me. Mario Manningham had 944 yards receiving last year. Armstrong had 871 yards but with 16 less catches than Manningham. This means that Armstrong had a much better yards per catch average. Gaffeny had 65 receptions for 875 yards last year. The Skins receiving core is deeper than the Giants. I never said anything about the skins receivers being better than the Cowboys and Eagles.

Spin it how ever you want
but MM is a better WR than AA or JG. I hate to say it as a Redskins fan, but it is very true.

disagree
MM had the luxery of an oline, running game, and 2 other WR. he is not a good #2, but more of a great#3

I think he is a very good #2
and maybe one of the better ones in the league. He produces, and has been getting better with each season. Thats tells me a lot.

I have a hard time making the comparision...
While I think Elijah Manning sucks….he’s been exponentially better than our quarterbacks over the past 5 years. It’s hard to say that a receiver in a better situation is a better receiver to me. Had Eli been hurt last year and Sorgi had to play 5 or 6 games, don’t you think his play would have declined dramatically?
But, of course, if you’re just comparing the numbers and the watching the play (which is all we can do since we can’t actually switch QB’s for a game), then manningham is probably comes out a notch ahead of AA and JG
patience
we have some unproven talent but i think armstrong is going to come into his own and i like the gaffney pickup hes a hard worker and thats what we need! give me a whole team of guys fighting like hell to make a team and move up! thats what breeds probowlers!
people gas up the eagles wr corp
none of them are good rout runners. they are explosive yes. but the qb has to buy time for them…hence mcnab and vick. When kolb started, they did a lot of intermediate passes which took away the explosion. it hink the redksins have better route runners then them.

Are you kidding?????
none of them are good rout runners
Macklin is one of the better route runners you will find for a young WR, and SS is an exceptional route runner.
it hink the redksins have better route runners then them.
Joey Galloway was a great route runner………………how did that work out?

Steve Smith is a hell of a route runner. This is what his game is built on.

he is hurt
could even be season ending.

yes he is hurt but he is hopeful he will be ready for Week 1. So the injury isn’t season ending.

are you on your period?
gall-away is not here. moss, jabar, and stallworth are good route runners…suprisingly austen is good 2

You were talking about the Eagles, correct?
2 out of the Eagles top 3 WR’s are good route runners. That was the point of my reply. No need for the period comment.

no need for the child please, but either way.
who are good route runners? maclin and jackson? all i see them do is deep double moves. no curls, 5 in/outs, slants.

"Child please" is a joke ala Chad Ochocinco(I hope you knew that)
SS and JM are both excellent route runners. SS being one of the better ones in the game

I wonder how the total catches from our top 5 will compare to
that number on the other teams in our division (and out). That is, even granting Tiller’s assessment, our unit could be just as effective, or almost so (good balance and a good system). If the ground game works (Shanahan genius), it can make up the difference, giving us a pretty potent offense. And it’s not all or nothing. If the defense is also improved, the overall package could do well.
I think the total catches will be pretty high....
The majority of Beck’s passes (I’m assuming he’s the starter) were under 10 yards. It kind of looked like JC’s first season when his check down was the first receiver he actually looked at. If the ground game is working though, I think Beck will have a great season relying on the play action.
I think that is the plan......
if we can get the running game established, while earning first downs with the “dink and dunk” type passes, not only can we eat up the clock but we also get the entire defense coming forward at the snap. Next thing you know AA is streaking down the sidelines with a 5 yard cushion!!!
Depth is definitely the way to go with your receiving corps.
That is part of what make the Packers so deadly. They have more good receivers than you can cover. The 1 star is definitely nice (although, GB actually has 2 with Jenningsa and Finely). Hopefully some of your young guys can grow into really good players that can make teams play.

depth for sure
we want to be deep for sure! we dont have a calvin johnson or andre johnson! a guy you can just throw it up to in double or triple coverage that is just bigger and stronger than the guys their up against to pull it down!
We do have J-Mike though for those kinds of things...
But why throw it into triple coverage when their 4th DB can’t hope to cover Jordy Nelson?
