"Not having the whole offseason hurts guys like [Perry] Riley," Haslett said. "They don't get an opportunity to learn everything. That's probably one of the hardest spots to learn in this defense. There's a lot different combinations. It takes time to learn to play this defense. One minute you’re playing all the weak hooks the vertical stuff, one minute you’re playing all the three-receiver stuff, all the strong stuff. It takes a while."
When asked if Riley would get a shot to work with the starters:
"That’s up to coach Shanahan but right now we’d probably go with who we have unless something changes."
John Keim's Practice Report. Looks like we can ink Rocky McIntosh in at RILB.

Lucky for Rocky....
Might be good news for HB Horatio Blades too. Hopefully, Fox or Riley can pick things up and replace Rocky.

1. Why did he change his name?
2. I don’t think it helps him, I think it’s more of an indictment on Riley that they think he should be further along than he is. HB is still on the outside looking in I think with Fletch, Rocky, Fox, and Riley ahead of him
He just recently became a BIG fan on the Horatio Hornblower book series.

Can't see how it helps Blades - his best chance was that Rocky would flop, and be cut
Of course, they could give up on Riley, or even decide that Fox isn’t the answer (which could be why they gave Fox a real good look in the Colts game). But Horatio is probably a goner.
ummm.... b/c it seems to me they are favoring players that know the system.

Yes, so Riley could be the odd man out
Would seem to be short-sighted though, if Riley has as much potential as guys like Tiller think he has. And Blades would seem to be somewhat limited.
Riley isn't going anywhere

It's a hard position to pick up BUT,
Fox who signed 2 weeks played all the starter snaps at ILB against the Colts and handled all the playcalls.
@Callahan_9 on the twitter machine.
Fox did play in similar system in Pittsburgh and has been coached by Spanos before.

but he has been playing in a 3-4 for the last 3 years
that being said it’s still a worrying sign for Riley that he still isn’t up to speed.
This is what I HATE about Haslett...
He did the samething to Jarmon last season. I think the defensive line coach suggested to put Jarmon in the game since they were short on linemen during the game. Haslett responded he didn’t feel comfortable putting him in there because he didn’t see him perform during training camp (he was injured). Haslett is doing the same thing with Riley now. He is making the safe, but stupid choice of staying with Rocky instead of letting the 2nd year showcase what eh got.
ILB is essentially the QB of the defense.
I think this is more of a system thing then not seeing Riley. Riley is getting plenty of PT, that’s not the issue like it was with Jarmon last year.
Its such a vital position that Haslett is more comfortable with a veteran. With that being said, in a similar situation that you just posed regarding Jarmon, I think Haslett would be more than comfortable with putting Riley in. But at this point Fox is outplaying Riley, and McIntosh for that matter, in my opinion.

Haslett is a dumbass...
He is not going to change it. Andre Carter struggled at OLB all training camp and during the preseason, but he still started him. I don’t know what it is going to take for him to make changes to the depth chart.
Umm, he actually took Carter out as a starter once his struggles were clear.
Hence the reason Carter is no longer on the roster.
You mention both Rocky and Riley being in the system for the same amount of time. You don’t think the fact that Rocky started 15 games in the system doesn’t count for experience. While Riley got basically no PT. I think its also important to note that Haslett said “THEY”, it’s pretty clear that not having an offseason hurts such a young player. What is wrong with saying that?
We also have to remember Riley is just a 4th round pick and a 2nd year guy, we seem to put our draft picks on a pedestal and expect all of them to be plug and play guys. Riley needs to learn and development more at this point rather than be thrown to the wolves. I’d love to see Riley start, but if he’s not ready then he’s not ready, period.

Carter struggles was clear from the second he stepped on the field...
If these men are supposed to be professionals then he should have made that judgement from the beginning. Riley is ready…he has been impressive throughout training camp. Putting ROcky in there is a downgrade to our defense. What harm will it do to see how Riley will perform with the starters…
too bad you weren't coaching instead of Has
maybe we would have had a chance

i loved GWilliams
but give Haslett a chance. He did not have the personnel last year and was forced to play the cards he was dealt. he got his wish list of personnel this year, so if we do not see big strides, then us fans can dole out some of our frustration on him. until then, i stand behind Has

Haslett has never overseen a great defense.
Ever.
And frequently good defenses became worse under him.
The best case scenario for him as a coach is mediocrity.
His track record speaks for itself.

translation...
I’m letting a offensive guy make the decisions on who to start in my defense. What does this quote have to do with what I am saying.
You're harping on Haslett for making bad personnel decisions when it's Shanny making the decisions.

Now now
you know Shanahan is an ex-OC and lets Haslett run the D, if Haslett wants a player out i am sure that player is out. i strongly suspect that D players decisions are left up to Haslett. Shanny is too busy checking Jrs. homework.

Shanahan has been a NFL HC for over 15 years, you don't think he knows a little about defense now?
And is part of the personnel decisions? Did you notice Albert Haynesworth last year?

Right, Shanahan is the boss
I too like Haslett. Last year he was forced to play the 3-4 defense, without having the requisite players. He did his best to be creative, but it wasn’t really possible.
With two ILBs, one has to be the QB of the defense. Fletcher's role has been the one to be the defensive QB. Fox
was substituting for Fletcher and was the logical choice to be the D QB with 3 years of 3/4 ILB experience. Riley is not ready to be the D QB, but does need to get experience as the “other ILB.”

WTF is Haslett talking about...
Riley and Rocky has been playing in this defense for the same amount of time. This is year 2 for both of them and he is talking about its takes time to do this and that…man I hate this guy
The difference is that this is also only Riley’s second year in the NFL. So he wasn’t just learning the system but also how different the jump from college to the NFL is. That’s alot for a 4th rounder to take in. It seems like Riley is being groomed for next year and that Rocky is just a one year stop gap.
Seems like alot of teams did the one year deals with veterans because their young guys missed the offseason.

Good points. Also, Rocky has 15 starts in this system to Riley’s 0. Big advantage in experience and knowledge to Rocky.
Riley shoudl still see some time this year and if he proves he is better on sundays, he will play.
