NFC East Roundup: 'Boys and Eagles Win, Giants Struggle
The Cowboys made their preseason opener against the Denver Broncos as about exciting as possible, winning the game on a touchdown and two point conversion with fifteen seconds left. Quarterback Stephen McGee was probably the Cowboys top performer, passing for three touchdowns, an interception, and over 200 yards in the air. Another impressive performer was rookie wide receiver Dwayne Harris out of East Carolina. Harris, who will likely help to replace Roy Williams, caught two touchdown passes and gained 127 yards.
Injuries: Most notably Tashard Choice and rookie running back DeMarco Murray have been banged up all training camp. Jon Kitna, Andre Gurode, Jay Ratliff, Mike Jenkins, Josh Thomas, and several others have also missed time.
Rookie Report: Harris was by far the most impressive rookie in last Thursday’s game. Number nine overall pick, Tyron Smith, looked solid in his first game. He did play some matador defense in the 2nd quarter that got QB Stephen McGee crushed. David Arkin was also a pleasant surprise for Cowboys fans starting at Left Guard Thursday.
The Giants training camp has been more about the distraction of Osi Umenyiora, and losing Steve Smith and Kevin Boss than the team that took the field and lost 20-10 Saturday night versus the Panthers. Eli Manning and the Giants first team offense looked really out of rhythm and they really weren’t able to move the ball in the five series they appeared in. The Giants offense only generated three points the whole game.
Injuries: Top pick, Prince Amukamara is out indefinitely at this point with a broken foot. Beyond that, kicker Lawrence Tynes is banged up after getting hit in the game Saturday.
Rookie Report: The Giants have a lot of interesting rookies, but not many things stood out to me on Saturday. They seem to be more of a work in progress then I first thought. Marvin Austin and Mark Herzlich did both register two tackles. Herzlich also forced a fumble.
We all know the theme to the Eagles offseason in adding several high profile free agents, but there are also some other interesting things going on in America’s armpit. First off, no one can figure out what the hell is going on with WR Jeremy Maclin. Maclin was first said to have been diagnosed with mononucleosis, but now he’s visited a specialist in St. Louis and some think he may be in some sort of dire condition. Even DeSean Jackson said the Steve Smith signing was "insurance" for Maclin, strange stuff…
The Eagles won their preseason opener over the Ravens 13-6 last Thursday night. Michael Vick looked very sharp going four for six with 76 yards and a touchdown pass to Brent Celek. Vince Young also looked decent in limited time, using his athleticism to get out of some jams. Many of the Eagles high profile offseason pick ups did not play in this game.
Injuries: Obviously Jeremy Maclin is the premier injury story. The only other story besides usually training camp dings is that Mike Patterson has been cleared to return for conditioning after his scary incident a couple of weeks ago.
Rookie Report: Rookie safety Jaiquawn Jarrett made the biggest impact last week. The former Temple Owl and second round pick intercepted a pass in his debut. Dion Lewis was the other rookie bright spot, looking good in the running game. Also rookie kicker Alex Henery was two for two, with a long of 35 yards.

Maclin’s brother said he is fine and an announcement will be made today. Really a bizarre story.

You know, I got mono my Senior year of college and it sucked for a week or two. But I really didn’t find it as debilitating as some make it out to be. I’m sure some cases are milder than others, but the fact that he went to a specialist in St. Louis is strange to me. If you have mono then you just chill and there isn’t much you can do.

Haha, well that’s what both Maclin and the team said anyway. Maybe the Eagles and Maclin are both lying, and Maclin has some sort of extremely rare illness, and the only doctor on the planet that can treat him has for some reason chosen to live in one of the most violent cities in America. I don’t know. But one is more probable than the other.

Sorry didn't realize the doctor's office was in East St. Louis, IL...
I guess James Andrews should move out of Birmingham since they routinely have one of the worst crime rates in the country.

I mean you don't think anything about the Maclin situation is odd?
If he has mono then why does there need to be an announcement from his family today? That’s already been announced… Is there going to be a big press conference today? “ANNOUNCEMENT: Jeremy still has mono…”

EBV is basically the cause of mono most of the time.
It doesn’t leave your body. Anyone that’s had mono would probably test positive for EBV. And yes, I’m talking out of my butt here.

I had mono, too. Unlike yours, mine was awful. Freshman year of college. Was there less than a month and got mono. Went home and missed almost a full month. I basically couldn’t get off my parents’ sofa for like 3 weeks.

Jason Paul-Pierre is supposedly having an incredible camp….just dominating people. (It had to have forced Osi’s hand). Gonna be a big matchup for Trent Williams week 1!

I can only hope that is because all of the new and whack members of the Giants O-line.

Contrary to popular belief the Panthers actually started their own o-line Saturday night, not the Giants.

JPP is going against the Panthers O-line in training camp?

JPP looked pretty damned good Saturday vs. Carolina also...
He had two sacks and four tackles. I don’t think you can chalk it up to the Giants o-line at this point.

Hope we sweep them this year.
Them and the rest of the NFC east. Yes, my morning koolaid is over flowing.
HTTR!
Rookie safety Jaiquawn Jarrett made the biggest impact last week. The former Temple Owl and second round pick intercepted a pass in his debut.
I moved into Jarrett’s old neighborhood and live near his parents. They saw my Skins visor and started giving me sh-t.
It was funny. They’re good people.

lol.
The Giants lost to the Panthers. That’s hilarious. I know we’re hoping that the Eagles will crash and burn the most (which, honestly, is unrealistic), but the Giants have had our number the last few years and it would be glorious to sweep them… along with Dallas, of course.
"Dyslexia?? It's DCO." - WestcoastO'sfan
Still, it's funny.
They’ve lost some key players on offense and defense if I remember correctly. We shall see. But really, it would be sweet. And since I’m underage, I shouldn’t say that I’d rather have spiked fruit punch than kool-aid… but I will anyway because the kool-aid I know tastes like shit.

Hey Parks.
I just wanted to say that I think this was a good article. I like your unbias writing and analysis. The only point I would make was Dwayne Harris was definately the top offensive performer (McGee had a very slow start but he played well in the clutch) and Victor Butler had a huge defensive game for his limited time.

Thanks a lot Nnamdi for wasting a whole day of productivity at work and stressing me out. Now we get to destroy you twice a year and I'll call us even.

Dwayne Harris- Bum
Tyron Smith- Clown

Couple other Giants rookies
Tyler Sash got beat by Greg Olsen for a TD, but it was liek the 4th play of his career. He rebounded to have 4 tackles and a FF. Greg Jones also had a couple tackles on ST.

Jones made the very first tackle of the game
crushed the guy on the kick return. Think he was in on another ST tackle. That’s where he’ll make his mark this year, he runs very well but like all rooks needs to figure out where he’s going.

I didn't forget to mention it, why would I mention it? It's preseason.
I’m sure Skins fans are more concerned with how starters and new acquisitions are playing around the division. Not the fact that the Eagles 2nd, 3rd, and 4th teamers combined for 5 sacks and 2 interceptions of a rookie QB in Tyrod Taylor. Frankly, I don’t think anyone cares.

New Defensive Coordinators
If I’m not mistaken, Philadelphia and Dallas both have new Def. Coordinators. I’m curious what some of you nuts think about the impact in the NFC East. Are these guys implementing new systems also? If so, I’m wondering why it is assumed they will still be successful. The quietness of these facts leads me to believe these teams are be being way over-sold.
by TheSportsManager on Aug 16, 2011 7:34 PM EDT reply actions
well atleast w/ Philly i believe its more about the offense… hard to beat a team when theyre putting up 30-40 points a game at will… quickly scoring i might add…. their corners should make it hard for their opps to score as fast as them too… i dont like it one bit…
i dont think folks are assuming the cowgirls will be super successful this year… i think folks have learned their lesson… lol..
the thing is though they aren't dramatically changing their style of play
and they aren’t using personnel that don’t fit the system. The Eagles Juan Castillo is a surprise, b/c he had been on the offensive side of the ball for the last 15 years, but he’s a highly respected assistant. And they brought in Jim Washburn, one of the top D-line coaches in the league. They have top notch personnel, that fits their system so it shouldn’t be an issue.
As for Rob Ryan in Dallas, he is a 3-4 guy as well, and looks like he will keep the defense pretty similar with possibly adding more blitzing.
