Redskins Resign Phillip Buchanon

Phillip Buchanon has been re-signed by the Redskins via his twitter account:

Buchanon was a valuable contributor for the Skins last year and started five games towards the end of the year. He was also the team's primary nickle CB. The 30 year old will be entering his tenth NFL season and will likely compete with new Redskin Josh Wilson and Kevin Barnes for a starting role.

Really happy with this

The secondary is looking very strong now and overall the defense is shaping up nicely, still a concerns about ILB but overall were just lacking a little in depth.

Me too

Very excited by this news. Was certainly a hole we needed to fill. Now if we added Lofa I’d be all set on the D side and only wanting a new G on O. I’m fine with Cofield as DT.

I’ll wait in the terms of the deal, but I’m very happy to have him and add depth to a still thin secondary.

It goes:

Hall
Wilson
Buchanon
….
Barnes

by terp121 on Aug 1, 2011 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions

should be

hall
wilson
barnes
buchanon

Wilson may be better than Hall

He was really coming on at the end of last season. A smart QB (i.e. not Jay Cutler) can take advantage of Hall.

Solid signing!

Our secondary will be 2nd to none. HTTR!

Yes...

Gotta give the Eagles their due. Their secondary is nasty now.

by Figpucker on Aug 1, 2011 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions

even

their CBs are a little better, but not way better. our safeties are better.

by hsoup on Aug 1, 2011 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I think you need to look at the rosters again.

Asomugha and Rodgers-Cromartie are both better than any of our corners. Samuels is at least as good as Hall and Wilson—probably better. Barnes/Buchanon aren’t that close to those guys. Their CBs are way better. Their corners are the best in the leauge.

But you’re right about our safeties—Landry/Otogwe is a top-flight tandem.

by Reedskin on Aug 1, 2011 10:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Ditto

Will be nice to see Landry crush some people this year.

by Figpucker on Aug 1, 2011 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I hate to say it...

but their CBs are much better than ours but we’re going to run all over them anyway :)

by Figpucker on Aug 1, 2011 10:50 PM EDT up reply actions

if they move samuel

then we stack up a little better. they have a better starting two. but our cb depth (hoping barnes improves upon late season performance) and safeties can compete

by jaygo on Aug 1, 2011 11:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Solid signing

He’ll either push Barnes for 3, or be one of the best 4th corners in the league.
Also closes the door on Carlos, who is prob’ly gettin pretty antsy in the unemployment line.

But please keep in mind that he was a notch above terrible and can’t tackle.

He used to tackle

I was watching a VT bowl game on ESPNclassic the year D-Hall got drafted. In all seriousness he was laying the wood to TE’s and RB’s. Idk what happened along the way but he used to like to hit.

by skins4life010 on Aug 1, 2011 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Used to.

I think he took a few good shots and realized he would rather just make INTs to stay in the league than tackle. Not many are going to remember the missed tackles but they will certainly remember the INTs.

I like this signing. Hall and Wilson starting. Barnes and Buchanon battling for #3

I want Barnes to make the leap to #3 CB this year after a promising end of last year but the depth of our secondary still scared me. Plus I didn’t want us to just hand Barnes that Nickel spot so now it will be fun to watch these 2 battle it out. I still expect both to see the field a decent amount because we all know about injuries to CB’s (springs, rogers, smoot).

by jeffco01 on Aug 1, 2011 4:53 PM EDT reply actions

One more CB

We need to bring in Kelvin Hayden to solidify the secondary because I don’t trust Byron Westbrook as our 5th CB on the depth chart.

With Westbrook, Wilson, and Barnes you have your young guys who can play ST and Buchnanon was solid last year. I’m assuming his deal is a 1-year low money deal.

1). Getting offended by nicknaming a guy the Stormin’ Mormon.

2). Acting self righteous about the name Redskins when the Mormon religion you’re defending claims that dark-skinned Native Americans are cursed to look that way and live in squalor until they accept Christ and turn white again.

by CJHutch on Aug 1, 2011 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I am hopeful, but not particularly confident, about Beck

Did you hear how he was having trouble throwing long at the first training camp session? Could be totally meaningless (he must have done better last year) – and we’ll find out a lot more pretty soon – but it points out that John still has to prove that he’s an adequate NFL QB. Rex must be holding out for money. He wants starter money, they want to pay him as a backup. That could be why Shanahan started boosting Beck when he did – money. I wonder if the Rex situation isn’t the reason they haven’t moved on Franklin, Edwards, Tutupu, Crowder – they don’t know how much they will have to pay him or somebody else, so don’t know how much money they have left.

by Donnio1234 on Aug 1, 2011 6:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah beck seems to be either under throwing everyone or flinging it waaaay over in camp so far. Nerves from being the possible starter? Or just not good? Time will tell I suppose.

Hey now...

we see our share of good QBs out west. The reigning SB champ QB is from Cal. The consensus best college QB in the nation plays at Stanford. USC has produced several NFL starters in a row and currently has a 1st round prospect. Locker was a big prospect. Derek Anderson and Matt Moore somehow managed to start for NFL teams. We’re rocking Clemens from Oregon.

For the limited number of schools out here, I’d say the West is doing just fine at producing QBs.

Again, I don’t think you understand my stance. I think he’s fine as a backup, and he may even be better than Beck as a starter. But if we sign him, he will most assuredly start because of Kyle. And having him start from the jump is essentially swimming upstream for us. We know what we’re gonna get, with no chance at all of improving the output of that position. At least with Beck in there I can hold out the hope of improved QB play from last year.
I also am not sure he would sign anywhere else. As I said before, Houston could have signed him back (since he’s “familiar with the system”), but they chose to go with a guy in Leinhart who doesn’t even seem to care about football.( Personally, I’d take Rex over Leinhart, though that has nothing to do with skillsets. ) However, regardless of whether or not he has other opportunities, I GUARANTEE you this is the only, opportunity he would have to start. So holding out is a huge gamble, and pretty idiotic to boot. He has no leverage to squeeze more money out of us. Regardless of what you may remember, his play was average at best last year. And his 8 turnovers in 5 games are a huge red flag for Shanny.

Oh, yeah, I forgot - there've been whispers about Orton for quite awhile

He apparently got a bonus a few days ago, making it less likely that he’ll be traded. I can’t remember what the rumored deals were, though. I’d think that Orton would be substantially better than anybody we have, but hardly a franchise quarterback.

by Donnio1234 on Aug 1, 2011 7:14 PM EDT up reply actions

rather have matt flynn then orton....

maybe greenbay would take hainworth mcnabb and our 2nd rounder for him? and throw in rex grossman as late round bonus because he would knows shanahans SYSTEM better:)

Clearly you have not paid any attention at all this off season.

We traded AH and McNabb awy already, and we haven’t even resigned Grossman yet. Please, for the love of God, go update yourself on the things the Redskins have done so far.

i was joking about mcnabb and hainsworth lol. but i wish we could get matt flynn as out 3 year starter till we grown out number 1 draft pick next

till we groom our number 1 draft pick that we get next year. must rather have traded for flynn over hightower. might have cost us more but i think he would be worth it… alot more then orton

So you want to give a number 2 draft pick

for a holdover QB. Is that what I’m hearing? Think for a moment about how stupid that sounds.

he won the games that he started last year... the pack couldnt win without mathews..

the dude looked great to me… but then again im a redskins fan.. so im not used to seeing great gbs… i think matt would be well worth a second rounder.. ied say he better then kolb or orton easy… he is stuck on the bench because of rogers who is a elite qb…. they had no running game and he still came into those games and won. i think he be perfect for us to get for the next 3-4 years

Thats what Im screamin.

Sounds kinda like a hothead, and totally defy’s my “character guys” post I had before, but he’s not too old, and could help us out.. MOSTLY depends on his asking price though.. Did he play in the 3-4 though?

by SucHerPunch on Aug 1, 2011 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm unsure

however this day and age everyone is playing some sort of ‘hybrid’ 3-4 scheme, Crowder brings some added ‘fire’ to the D if he’s signed with the Skins, and you stated what is his asking price. This is the determining factor…

by Big Spoon on Aug 1, 2011 11:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, please

Tatupu

from stats from another HH poster 2010 was a rough year for Tatupu after injury….

by Big Spoon on Aug 1, 2011 11:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Live in Spokane, WA

and i’ve loved watching Tat play. Man can move and is one of the best tacklers I’ve seen but the best thing about him is he doesn’t tire out. Seems to get faster as the game goes.

by Figpucker on Aug 1, 2011 11:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Interesting

i think the other WA cat said he thought Lofa was shying away from contact after his injury, and his performance suffered because of it. I defer to both of you though.

by Jim America on Aug 1, 2011 11:33 PM EDT up reply actions

This is a pretty accurate statement of Tatupu's 2010 season, I think.

However, before the injury, he was a damned good player. All over the field and a great tackler. Sometimes with injuries, it just takes some time to feel comfortable with going 100% again, and this could be the case with Tatupu. However, his injury history goes back farther than just last season, and who knows if he’s fully recovered from last season.

I’ve got some interest in him, but I’ll trust our coaches and medical staff to make whatever call they think is best.

by Reedskin on Aug 2, 2011 1:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Due diligence

will certainly need to be done on his medical condition that’s for certain. Even if he looks good not sure how he’ll fit, kinda small, but I’d really like to root for this guy AS a Redskin.

by Figpucker on Aug 1, 2011 11:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Rex will be solid

Just for little cj the biggest grossman hater on here. I guarantee that Rex will beat out Beck. And I guarantee he will throw for over 3500 yards. And about 25 Td with a rating in the mid eighties

by CommunistKevin on Aug 1, 2011 7:48 PM EDT reply actions

Wow...

those are some lofty goals for Mr. Rex. We can’t be too delusional on this guy. We certainly need a new QB soon. Perhaps not this year but soon. If we could trade for Orton I would be all over that. If we had him I’d have a faint possibility of us making the playoffs this year that’s how high I am on our team…perhaps now I’m be delusional.

by Figpucker on Aug 1, 2011 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions

He was on track for much more than that in his 3 games last season.

And that was with a Defense that couldn’t get off the field, no WR corps, Barely a semblance of a running game and a worse OL than we have right now.

by TheDeepBall on Aug 1, 2011 8:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly

but Rex still is so hated and made fun of. There is no other qb ripped on like him. Just because you heard that Rex is bad and it is a big joke. Do people ever think on their own. Im not saying that he is a freaking superstar. But there is plenty worse than him

by CommunistKevin on Aug 1, 2011 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions

That's right.

I am hoping of course that Beck can be better than him but if not Rex is a serviceable stopgap until we can grab Luck or Jones next year.

I don’t know why anybody at all wants us to go for Orton. Did ONE good season really make everybody forget that Orton is a mediocre QB?

by TheDeepBall on Aug 1, 2011 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh please

look, I will agree that Rex isn’t as terrible as some folks on here claim. However, statements like this:

There is no other qb ripped on like him.

are completely ridiculous. Did you just start paying attention last year? Nevermind, even if you had, you would know McNabb got ripped on just as much. Ever heard of Jason Campbell? Heath Shuler? Gus Frerotte? Hell, John Beck gets ripped on just as much, and he hasn’t even played yet. The list goes on.

This is the nature of the quarterback position in DC. It’s kinda dumb, but get used to it. And please don’t insult my intelligence by acting like poor Mr. Grossman is somehow being picked on unlike any other…it’s simply not the case.

by Jim America on Aug 1, 2011 9:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok

You know im from the Chicago area so i got to see how he was treated here and it was nuts in his first full season as a starter. So I might be a little over defending on him but the players you listed might have been disliked but not as much as him league wide. You are not that bad. People like cj though are insane with their hatred.

by CommunistKevin on Aug 1, 2011 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Trust me

nobody cares about him league wide. My take on why he got crapped on by Bears fans so much is because he was in a QB controversy with a guy that was clearly better than him in Orton. That’s my take anyway.

by Jim America on Aug 1, 2011 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Also,

he was a Spurrier system QB out of Florida and everyone knew he didn’t have the chops to play at the highest level, especially early.

by tuckwell on Aug 2, 2011 12:01 AM EDT up reply actions

I also am from Chicago and my memory is that Chicagoans hated Rex far more than

Skins fans disliked any of the guys you named. Nobody hated or even disliked Jason – it’s just that after awhile a part of the fandom didn’t have much confidence in him. This includes fans and sportswriters. And HH was strongly pro-Campbell. Gus may have gotten some ridicule, but nobody disliked him. In Chicago, with Rex, it was personal – they hated him – bum, terrible, loser, screwup, trade him – rally nasty and negative. And all the criticism spread to other cities, and has made Rex something of a pariah – unfairly, in my opinion. Washington is actually a pretty nice, easy going sports town – not like Philly or even NY. I think Chicago is normally pretty understanding, too, but they really dumped on Rex. Beck has been treated extremely well considering his resume.

by CommunistKevin on Aug 1, 2011 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Dude

donnio you are right my man. The hatred was insane and it spread to the national media and then the vast majority of fans just followed along. There are tons of qbs who are worse but they are mocked endlessly. And the qb controversy in chi was mainly between grossman and griese not Orton. By the time Orton was in the mix rexs reputation was already ruined

by CommunistKevin on Aug 1, 2011 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions

ha ha

It’s been a long time since I’ve been called little. Funnystuff.

I dunno if you’re joking about these stats or what. I’m just curious, have you seen Rex’s play BEFORE last year? Bottom line – he is what he is. He ain’t gettin any better. He’ll give you a borderline spectacular half here and there, but for the most part its dink and dunk between turnovers. One thing I’ll give him, he always keeps it interesting, along with always finding a new and exciting way of giving the ball to the other team. Remember his first play from scrimmage last year?
As for the stats themselves, they don’t do much for me. That’s probably just about what we got outta the position last year, which falls in line with what I said up top about not improving on the QB play. Stats don’t mean a thing if you only end up with 6 wins. As a Skins fan, you should know that.

by CJHutch on Aug 2, 2011 2:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Haha

Hey that first fumble was entirely his fault. People fumble on blind side sacks. Sorry i got a little enraged. But I truly do feel like he is way too disrespected. And ive been following him since highschool so I am big fan

by CommunistKevin on Aug 2, 2011 4:09 AM EDT up reply actions

I liked your first

response better. Seriously though, I DO realize that most QB fumbles can be attributed to breakdowns. But I also know some QB’s don’t fumble in those situations. Campbell did. But I can remember one play early in the season, may have been against the Giants, when McNabb was hit in the (ball holding) hand while it was down, and he held on to it. I was actually pretty amazed. In fact, I think it was actually in the end zone.
As for the Grossman play, his fault or not, he gets credited with it. The reason I blame him for it is because, and I am not lying here, I told my wife he would fumble it as he was coming in. Did I think the play would turn out that disastrous? No. But, again, those types of plays seem to follow him. They may not all be his fault, but he seems to have a knack for them. I liken it to D. Hall’s INT’s. He usually gets them not because of some spectacular play on the ball, but because the ball seems to find him. I think those type of plays “find” Rex.

This guy was not perfect last year, but I will not forget his clutch coverage on Reggie Wayne last season. The guy has a chance to start, but regardless, this guy is the nickel corner we need if Barnes isn’t ready to take the reigns.

I don't know if you realize this

but we drafted a run-stopping DE, signed a guy who’s willing and competent at the NT position, and a pass-rushing DE for the other side. We drafted Ryan Kerrigan to help on the outside and are probably going to sign Tatupu at ILB to play alongside Fletcher.

And don’t forget we have Landry back and we signed Atogwe so Landry can play closer to the LOS. The scheme had nothing to do with it, it was the players and we fixed that. You are way too negative, man.

I'm pretty sure Shanahan asked him to.

But there is no reason to base Haslett’s performance on last year’s Defense. Most of the time players were in a position to tackle and then ended up missing it (Hi, Kareem Moore), or the DLine failed to do its job (Hi Kemo). Give Haslett this season to prove his worth before you hold his feet to the flames.

by TheDeepBall on Aug 1, 2011 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Shanahan demanded the 3-4 - over the advice of 100% of the people on HH

and despite not having hardly any of the right people and despite knowing that he was alienating his best player. Go figure. But you can’t blame Haslett except maybe for not telling the king that he had no clothes. Mike’s great idea got us ranked as the 31st defense in the league – couldn’t stop the run, couldn’t get off the field.
The offense actually racked up some pretty good numbers.

nothing about the original post is worthy of a serious reply. (not knocking you, it’s just a silly post).
