Shayne Graham Agrees to Terms with Redskins
Head Coach Mike Shanahan confirmed today that journeyman kicker Shayne Graham will be joining the Redskins in camp later this week. Graham will be entering his 11th season as a professional and has played most of his career in Cincinnati, where he was a Pro Bowler with the Bengals in 2005. Graham most recently kicked for the Patriots and Giants last year and was a perfect 12 for 12 on field goals. Graham is also a Virginia native (Radford) and a Virginia Tech alumnus.
Graham will be competing with third year kicker Graham Gano, who was one of the worst kicker statistically in the NFL last season.

Not a bad pick-up, hopefully this pushes Gano into being a more consistent kicker
"You're fucking out!"
Or just replaces him
In the long run men hit only what they aim at. Therefore, though they should fail immediately, they had better aim at something high.

Finally!
Someone to light a fire under Gano’s keester.
"If a man speaks and there is no woman around to hear him, is he still wrong???"
Another signing by Shanahan to force competition in camp. I must say I like the idea of Graham because, just by looking at his numbers, he is immediately going to push Gano. Gano has all the potential, as has been advertised, but he is yet to show it. Hopefully will trigger his talent. Shanahan loves competition so this doesn’t surprise to much.
Question: If Shayne went 12 for 12 last year...
why did he play for two different teams?
"If a man speaks and there is no woman around to hear him, is he still wrong???"
He was filling in for injuries, for two teams that have very solid kickers

Also the fact
that his kickoffs struggled to reach the ten yard line. No joke, they were lucky to get beyond the 20. It was shocking to witness.

I like that he's never been worse than 70%
It also seemed like Gano was untouchable all season and offseason. Glad to see us trying to upgrade our roster at every position.
Good pickup
I’m not a big Gano fan, ever since he appeared in the Washingtonian “Stress Issue” bragging about how little stress he feels, in the midst of stinking it up on the field.

competition up and down the roster… at worst maybe he can teach Gano some technique to make him actually accurate / consistent.

The Sports Junkies were talking about bringing in a guy like Shayne Graham this morning...
They also had a whole call in segment about Kevin Ewoldt’s tweet about being drunk in Vegas and trying to place a bet that the Skins will average less than 13 points/game this season…
HH was all over 106.7 The Fan this morning…
Seems like a good signing.
He’s the decent average veteran I’ve wanted for years.

It is insane hoe much a good kicker means!!!!
How many times has a crappy licker lost games for us in 18 years. I would say at least 70 games.
WELCOME MR. GRAHAM!!!!!!
lol...@ hoe.
I know it was a mistake, but I’m that happy too.

how many did Gano win for us last year?
yes he pretty much sucked, but he did make SOME clutch kicks. Shoulda beat Houston from 51 if we didn’t have a little Shanny karma to pay out.
I don't even wanna know
What games you’ve been watching the past 18 years that feature crappy lickers.
come on guys....
it’s lunchtime on a Monday…..where is my slop? where is my six pack?
it’s just not right.

Gano...
If you are reading our comments, Redskins Nation doesn’t hate you. We hate that you miss kicks that you should make. If you improve, it’s a win-win for everybody.

I guess the youth movement doesn't apply to Kickers/Punters
Good move, Gano needed the competition.

Can we get an open thread for Monday?
Shanny did indicate that he would like to get the roster to 90 players by Thursday, at my estimation, that means a significant number of moves still need to be made, so today may be a busy day.
According to the Washington Post
There are 84 players on the roster. Graham makes 85, Rex would make 86. That means there’s only 4 more to go (unless they make some more cuts).

aubrayo franklin, another DE, tatupu, and a guard.
Or replace any of them with kyle orton.
Only signed him for one reason
so that the coaches don’t get confused. They’ll both answer to Graham lol
Gano will win this competition, I really believe.
Not so fast
Gano has to prove he can produce. I know he was a rookie last year, but he cost us to many chances to win. Graham offers stability, confidence and reliability. Gano has a lot to learn. Graham already knows what Gano is trying to figure out.
Wait....
he missed FGs? That cost his team games??? KILL HIM!!!!!
He did it on purpose....
His plan to leave Cincy was better than Carson’s.

FYI
Randy Moss just retired.
"If a man speaks and there is no woman around to hear him, is he still wrong???"
I'm betting that no team wanted to touch him.
Didn’t he play for 3 teams last year??? That never looks good. That never even happened to T.O.

Those percentages are off.
Its pretty lazy for NFL.com or wherever you got that from to round the percentages.
Skins rule
Graham is good up to 49 yards and then his production drops off. This is not unusual for kickers.
Since the NFL is moving the placement of the ball on kick offs up a stronger leg is not needed there. Kick offs were one of Gano’s strong points, but he no longer has that edge.
So we've got a bunch of crackers competing for the kicking duties.
