Coming down to the wire on free agents

CB:  Skins should resign Carlos Rogers now.  No one else out there.

T:  They also should go after Jared Gaithers and Jamal Brown.  Injuries have been killing this position for years.

QB:  Go ahead and sign Grossman.

LB:  Bring back Rocky and another ILB for depth.

This appears to be a year to develop the core team and then go from there.  They aren't going to be a playoff team and need to make moves for next year or the year after when they have their QB.

I'd be ok

with Carlos, since his market value is obviously not near what he thought. Gaither is off the market, but Ryan Harris isn’t. I’d rather have him, obviously a better fit for our scheme. No need for Rocky. Riley is cheaper, and probably a better fit for this defense. McIntosh was solid, but that’s it. Guys like him are replaced every year all over the league. Actually, I’d like to see what Alexander can do there. If he can grab the starting spot, that means the two smartest guys on defense are at ILB, which is a good thing.

And please, NO GROSSMAN. I’d rather sink or swim with Beck THIS year. Grossman is a known commodity, and we KNOW he will have more turnovers than touchdowns. That’s what he does.

Grossman's just for depth and he's cheap

Yes, we know what he can do but it’s unlikely he or any of the other QB’s are here for the next two years. Next year, Luck or Barkley come in and takeover. Maybe.

Alec: Chris, did you really buy a $1400 toilet?
Chris: Yeah, it's great. It's Japanese and has those little warm water jets that clean the undercarriage.
Eric: Chris, it's a toilet, you shit in it.

Any quarterback

Is depth for us. No matter who we sign, we still won’t have a viable starter. My problem with Grossman is that Kyle likes him too much.( Its just like Gibbs was with Brunell). Which means if Beck is the starter, he will have a very short leash. But i think Kyle would make a Rex the starter anyway, ensuring at least 2 turnovers a game, and dashing any hopes I may have (however unrealistic) coming into the season.

by CJHutch on Jul 30, 2011 7:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Well

1. Carlos doesn’t have any leveragea at all, so if he wants to walk so be it
2. Harris or Brown will do fine, the skins have to focus on depth on the O-line
3. Rex, hopefully the skins can just resign him to a 1 yr deal to have ‘somekind’ of stability
4.I agree Rocky has been solid, so it’s best to go with Riley on this one!

by Big Spoon on Jul 30, 2011 9:54 AM EDT reply actions

Didn't know Gaither was gone

We need a guard because Licht isn’t good enough, and, of course, a tackle. Not sure we need Carlos, because we have Wilson. Could use Buchanan though. Rex could easily beat out Beck – but wish we had somebody better. Very frustrating on the O-line, but maybe they’re just playing it cool – and know they can get some suitable guys. They also should get Franklin. They have a lot of money left, should not blow this opportunity.

by Donnio1234 on Jul 30, 2011 10:33 AM EDT reply actions

The Gaither-Raiders deal did not occur so he is not gone. I suspect that Brown was given an offer and he did not take it.

With Brown’s deferred decision, an offer to Harris was deferred as well. This is just my assumption. Yet it is possible that the coaches thought Capers, Cook, and the rookies would be enough.
The Team is far from reaching a 90 player roster from all reports.

Carlos Doesn't fit our scheme now that we have Wilson

Unless we want to play Hall in the slot, Wilson and Rogers are both better as outside corners. For a defense that wants to pressure the QB and create turnovers, it’s never good to let the QB know that he can throw at one side all day with virtually no chance of it being picked off. However cover CB’s are a scarce resource in this league so if he’s willing to come back at the right price it would be nice to have more depth in the secondary.

I don’t think Rocky is the answer at LB, I think we should take a look at Channing Crowder who the Dolphins released yesterday to make room for Kevin Burnett. He’s a very solid 3-4 ILB and will bring toughness and leadership to the Defense. He would also provide a bridge between Fletch and the young LB’s. Crowder knows the 3-4 and is a very good run-stopper, he would be a significant upgrade from RockyMac

by Dirrty30 on Jul 30, 2011 10:49 AM EDT reply actions

Channing Crowder is known for being good at run defense, but not pass defense or pass rush. He had a overall rating of

12.4 in PFF’s scheme of things which is very good for his 510 snaps in the 2010 season. That would have been about half of the Miami’s defensive plays – http://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2011/07/29/2011-nfl-free-agent-tracker/. He will be 28 next December.

You ARE a glutton for punishment aren't you, pfhokie?

Bring back Carlos? He who is unable to hang on to an interception? He who trashed his own team and can’t wait to get the hell out of Dodge? We should re-sign him to more money?
Bring back Rocky? He who is run over by running backs…pancaked as it were? He’s playing out of position. We’ve got hungry rooks who will fill the bill just fine for less moola.

This appears to be a year to develop the core team and then go from there. They aren’t going to be a playoff team and need to make moves for next year or the year after when they have their QB.
So the idea is to go with the new younger blood you have signed and see what they can do.

Adding Franklin and Rogers

could make us one of the best defenses in the league. Consider, CB – Hall, Rogers, Wilson; safety – Atogwe, Landry; D-line – Franklin, Cofield, Carriker, Bowen, Jenkins, and the holdovers – Bryant, Holliday, Golston; LB – Fletch, Riley/Loax, Rak and Kerrigan. Big improvement from last year.

On 'paper'

right now Philthy, is making a ‘bigger splash’ during this FA period!

To be continued….

by Big Spoon on Jul 30, 2011 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions

What philthy is doing is

almost Snyderesque….

just grabbing up jokers left and right!

by Big Spoon on Jul 31, 2011 7:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Cullen was snyderesque

I dont see how Cullen Jenkins fits their scheme and I think the money they paid for the “experiment” of teaching the old dog new tricks is stupid.
Nnamdi would have a place on every team in the league so I can’t criticize that signing

by alwaysremember21 on Aug 1, 2011 11:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Cullen was a DT before he became a 3-4 DE, so no new tricks are needed to be learned. Plus they brought in Washburn from Tennessee to coach up their line. The guy that just shits out D-linemen on the reg

I don't really think...

…that Rogers is really as good as some people (most notably himself) think that he is.

For one, the guy just cannot hold on to game-changing turnovers. Teams don’t bring in mediocre guys when they’re looking for game-changers. And regarding his reputation as a “cover corner”, he’s definitely a stronger player in that regard, but the guy talks like he’s in the same class as Revis, when clearly he isn’t. He does have a problem with double moves and, in my opinion, gets beat too frequently for a top-shelf CB.

For two, there is just too much bad blood between Rogers and the Skins. Wilson and Hall are our starters now, and there isn’t a single doubt in my mind that if we bring Rogers back as a third corner, he’ll just whine and whine and ruin the locker room. Our guys have dealt with even crank from Haynesworth the past two years. I’d rather put guys that truly want to be in DC in there.

Just wondering

while the skins have a plethora of wr’s in camp, could someone move to CB?

is this something unrealistic?

by Big Spoon on Jul 31, 2011 7:34 AM EDT reply actions

unrealistic? probably

but definitely unnecessary. I think we should bring Buchannon back at least. There are plenty CB’s out there that might not be all stars but can certainly play.

by MagicHat on Jul 31, 2011 7:39 AM EDT up reply actions

With the signing of Jammal Brown and Hightower there are not too many holes to be filled where good

offensive acquisitions can be had. Holliday was a good DL last season in spite of only being 285 lbs. so getting something for him was OK. The Team should continue to develop the OL with the existing roster. As for the draft pick given up for Hightower that remains to be seen. Heyer may not be resigned which won’t bother many fans although the Skins have invested a lot in him.

There are still some UFA ILBs out there.

Tatupu

is the 1st option, then Crowder, Lawson, Roth

by Big Spoon on Jul 31, 2011 11:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Que?

please expound on that Jeff1935…

by Big Spoon on Aug 1, 2011 3:45 AM EDT up reply actions

While it is true that Tatupu has gone to multiple pro-bowls, he is no longer the player he once was.

In 2010 he was the only ILB in the NFC West with an overall negative performance rating per PFF. In terms of snaps he played a full season. “Lofa Tatupu will want to forget his play in 2010. His -8.9 grading was the result of poor play in coverage (-6.7) and when rushing the QB (-4.3). He only managed 63 solo tackles, 1 less than Daryl Washington who play 626 less snaps. Tatupu also missed a division leading 14 tackles. His 7 pass defenses were, which led the division, was one highlight. In his first year back from injury, Tatupu’s performance was not what it had been in previous seasons, so his fantasy value needs to be downgraded. He simply doesn’t make enough turnovers and sacks and relies on consistent tackle numbers, but a career low for tackles in 2010 doesn’t fill me with confidence.” from the link above.

Maybe not

I read that Holliday will be fined if not reporting and the NFL office says that the deal is good and Vonnies only option is report ot retire. It’s Buyer Beware in the NFL.

by DudleyDoright on Aug 1, 2011 8:22 AM EDT up reply actions

So does that mean

We still get Hightower and Arizona just loses out? Does it affect their compensation at all?

by Gringo Starr on Aug 1, 2011 10:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Here's the quote but it's a moot point now...

Defensive end Vonnie Holliday said via text that he will report to Arizona as part of a trade for running back Tim Hightower. Had he retired, the Redskins understanding is that the trade still would have been a done deal. There is a buyer beware element to any trade. Meanwhile, Hightower is expected to be in Ashburn later this afternoon.

by DudleyDoright on Aug 2, 2011 10:21 AM EDT up reply actions

And especially this one

Holliday is still deciding whether or not he wants to report to Arizona. He had discussed retirement at the end of last season, but appeared anxious to play in 2011. If he retires, the trade can still go through. In an email, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said, “It depends on whether there is anything in the trade terms between the teams that addresses it. Otherwise, teams trade at their own risk.”

I can't speak for all skins fans

but I’m sure they’re looking for the team to grab:

1. OL
2. ILB
3. CB

then the pieces can look plentiful in regards to depth across the board!

by Big Spoon on Aug 2, 2011 10:59 AM EDT reply actions

No one at all

it’s truly amazing how much a competent gm/coach can make a difference in a franchise!

by Big Spoon on Aug 2, 2011 10:42 PM EDT up reply actions

This transition

has been very positive from all fronts, the FO is making some serious strides for the better.

We as skins fans have to enjoy this!
