Redskins Trade Jeremy Jarmon to Broncos for Jabar Gaffney
The Redskins have sent their 2009 supplemental third round draft pick Jeremy Jarmon to the Denver Broncos for veteran wide receiver Jabar Gaffney. This means the Skins have added both Gaffney and Donte Stallworth to an already crowded WR corps today.
Gaffney, 30, will be playing in his 10th NFL season with stops in Houston and New England. Last year he racked up a career year with 875 yards and two touchdowns for the Broncos.

Don't care for this move.
I’d liked to have seen one more year from Jarmon or at least trade him for someone a bit younger – and not a WR.
"If a man speaks and there is no woman around to hear him, is he still wrong???"
Yup, I agree with this too. I don’t see why we needed another serviceable #3 WR around the locker room, but Jarmon’s at least a replacement-level defensive lineman, and we’re kinda hurting for those.

I’ve always had the feeling coaches didn’t like Armstrong. Falling down…bad timing. He’s a good WR but not ideal…we’re stockpiling a fight for spots #2-#5.

He falls down because we don’t have a QB who can hit him in stride. He always has to stop and come back to the ball. Or slide to catch it.

For real. All Armstrong has done is over achieve, work hard, and catch the few balls McNabb could get to him.

I liked JJ
Thought he would be Daniels successor in the 4-3. Just another casualty of the 3-4 switch I guess.
And yet another reason why 3-4 defenses suck.

There is a point where you have to realize that you have the personnel for another system- we’re sacrificing an amazing amount of value to switch to the 3-4.
You can keep getting foot surgery to try to make a shoe fit, but at some point the cost isn’t worth the end result.
I wouldn’t hire anyone who coaches a 3-4. It is a garbage scheme. We are going to regret this in the future when we get a real defensive scheme back. It’ll happen soon as well.
Editor at Alligator Army - The Florida Gators Blog
The Florida Gators - The most despised team in all of college football - Which is fantastic.
Maybe it is maybe it isn't
but that debate has already been decided. If we’re going to do the 3-4 they need to commit to it. Trying to change it back only sets the team back further. From what I recall the Redskins were still using loads of 4 man fronts last year so I don’t think it’s as big an issue as people are making it.
For what it’s worth I don’t remember a lot of people singing Greg Blache’s praises either. The bend-don’t-break thing may have been stingier with yards but it also didn’t produce a lot of stops or turnovers and despite the better numbers on paper we weren’t exactly a dominant defense. Even when Gregg Williams was DC our defense rarely took over games.

I think the 3-4 is a fine system
I just think we didn’t have enough talent or resources to sacrifice players and draft picks and FA money to make the change. We have had to use high draft picks and FA money to maybe assemble a decent front 7 when we were at the time one of the best pass rushing teams in the league. When coupled with the win-now McNabb move it seemed especially asinine. I have no beef with the 3-4 as a system. I think either system can be dominant with the right players. We just had mostly 4-3 players at the time.
by BayAreaBullet on Jul 27, 2011 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions
Greg Blache's cover-2 influenced 4-3 isn't the only 4-3
People present this false choice between Blache and 3-4 like they were the only options. Especially weird since NYG’s hyper aggressive 4-3 had just stopped the most dominant offense I have seen and won a SB. The whole false choice between Blache and the 3-4 switch is fairly dishonest.

Apparently Jarmon could not compete with Holliday in 2010. As a 4-3 DE Jarmon looked OK before he tore his ACL.

In all fairness jarmon was never a fit for any defense we had here and he has not stayed healthy
And despite his age gaffney did put up 875 yds recieving last year, how many of our recievers put up anything close to that.On top of that he’s 6’2 and has ties not only to denver but also houston.
he doesn't really play like he is 6'2", he's not a real red zone threat

but he’s soft and shies away from contact…875 yds catching balls from a repectable QB in Orton and not JOHN BECK

Initally, this does not appear to benefit us, but…
Jarmon has not developed yet, was not going to fit this scheme, even if he did, so as far as I can tell, it was a trade of backups/potential regular season cuts…

Rightttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt……keep drinking the kool aid redskins apologist nation
Umm, let’s see. Cofield was a first year starter and has missed only one start in the NFL. First year starter usually = talent. Cofield was good enough to start on a team that won the super bowl.
Jarmon, on the other hand, was not good enough to start on a skins team that has had lots of holes on defense, and that lost 12 games and had a terrible defense. And/or Jarmon is just a bad fit in the skins defense.
nowhere in your reply
did you state that there was any reason whatsoever that Cofield has the ability to play in the 3-4.
He’s never played it in the NFL, and from what I’m reading around here wasn’t even THAT good in the 4-3, he was just a product of the rest of the talent around him.
All everyone keeps touting is how healthy he’s been, I get that
SpottieOttieDopaliscious
Cofield has a lot of fans in new york. Also, he was apparently given a substantial offer by NY even though their cap space is tight. That says something.
I think we get a little too mystified about 4-3 vs 3-4. Maybe Haynesworth’s whining got to us. Skins play some 3-4, some 4-3. It’s all football.
Like you say, Cofield was an NT in college. He has the same body as Ratliff, who is an elite NT. Cofield is never going to be an elite anything… he’s not destined for the HOF, but he’s still a good player who started on a super bowl winner and who started straight out of college. And he’s 27 and coming off his best year.

Jarmon was a 4-3 end in a 3-4 system.
By that logic, the same people screaming about Cofield’s signing should be applauding this move. We got a decent NFL veteran WR (how many of those have we had over the past few years?) for a guy that hasn’t panned out. Austin, Banks, Robinson, and Kelly are on notice.

So, lemme see
We get rid of Jarmon, a guy who did EVERYTHING the coaches asked him to do, including first losing a bunch of weight, and then gaining it back, yet we still have Haynesworth. Makes sense.
Maybe I’m wrong, but how exactly was JJ injury prone? I thought he blew his knee out at the end of his (pseudo) rookie year, then came back last year once he got healthy. Am I missing something?
Oh well, so Denver gets a pretty good prospect at D line ( who is also a very smart and GOOD guy), and we get our 2nd 30+ receiver of the day. Sounds like the opposite of rebuilding to me. When do we sign T.O?
+1
Don’t understand the sugar coating happening all over this board.
Two 30+ WRs, an 4-3 DE, the loss of a young DE prospect, Kellen Clemmons(!), no OL help, no CB help, and we’ve got people defending our front office?

I'm not sure
This is over reaction. Jarmon was a fan favorite, a hard worker, and an extremely likable guy. Gaffney is a dime a dozen receiver, past his prime, who’s relationship with Kyle could potentially stunt the growth of our young receivers.
Personally, this reminds me of the Chris Webber trade. Just like you don’t swap big for small (especially YOUNG big for OLD small) in the NBA, I don’t think you swap D line for receiver.
Not unless it’s a stud WR.
If we are 1/10 into the process
Please tell me when the other 9/10 will be. This regime has been around for a year I think it’s fair to evaluate them.

Really?
Shanihan is in his 2nd offseason. In the NFL you should be able to turn a team around in 3-4 years. Why does Shanallen get a 15 year plan? We’ve needed a real GM this entire decade, this isn’t an overreaction to anything.
You guys were the ones talking up our late round WRs, now we’ve added Stallworth, Gafney and Brandon Stokley. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that a mistake has been made already this offseason in either the draft, this trade or FA. And we still lack a #1 threat.

You mean cyanide right?
Don’t want Pee-king to get the wrong formula.
Clearly...
1. The Redskins Coaches, who didn’t draft Jarmon, didn’t feel he fit their scheme.
2. The Redskins must be close to a deal with Cullen Jenkins, etc. who in tandem with our #2 draft pick Jarvis Jenkins – have the DE spots locked down (with Karriker and Holliday there for depth).
Given that, Jarmon was expendable.
I honestly don’t know much about Gaffney other than the fact that he graced my fantasy football rosters during big bye weeks.
Truthfully, I don’t see the harm in bringing in another vet for competition and to help bring the younger guys along. Stallworth will probably be cut before the final roster, and either Robinson or Paul will be Practice Squad guys anyway.
Everyone needs to CALM DOWN. Jeremy Jarmon was not the second coming of Bruce Smith, and Jabar Gaffney is not the devil incarnate. Let’s wait to see how everything plays out in the Shanaplan- there’s still a ton of cap room and a lot of free agents out there. Free Agency did not end today!

You don't quit one job
before being hired for another. I hope we get Jenkins but there wasn’t a need to pull the trigger today for Gaffney. Is Jabar Gaffney really going to make this team better this season?
In response to the “you don’t quit one job until you have another” comment- I would generally agree, but none of this is official under the new rules today anyway. Plus, I hear that we are incredibly close with Cullen Jenkins, that we are essentially the only team in the running for him right now.
In response to the “is Jabar Gaffney going to make this team better this season?” comment- I would say I don’t know, and I would ask in return- was Jeremy Jarmon going to make this team better this season? Because I think with our 2nd rounder, Jarvis Jenkins, and the likeliness of Cullen Jenkins signing, (in addition to a plethora of mediocre depth already under contract); my guess would be no.
That being said...
I liked to cheer for Jeremy Jarmon as much as any fan.
I just think that this trade isn’t the end of the world, and is instead a small piece of a larger plan.
Fair enough
I agree with you. Just didn’t like the move because your losing a 23 year old guy who when drafted, people raved about the value they got with that supplemental pick, and who plays a position of need (atleast until Jenkins is signed).
In return you get a 30 year old WR in a position where we have untested youth already in place. Hope that Hankerson and maybe a healthy Kelly will get to see the field.
"who plays a position of need" - Jarmon was never going to fill that position of need. Even before Cullen Jenkins
becomes a Redskin the Team has more defensive ends than they can use.
94 Adam Carriker DE
93 Phillip Daniels DE
92 Albert Haynesworth DE/NT
91 Vonnie Holliday DE
— Jarvis Jenkins DE
73 Joe Joseph DE
72 Darrion Scott DE
— Jeff Stehle DE
UFA 64 Kedric Golston DE – may not get re-signed

yes he very well could
I think gaffney adds a polished receiver to our roster. I would consider him a better option than AA. He catches the ball with his hands and not his shouder pads. It is obvious we needed to upgrade the WR position so why not take a low risk move like this? The coaches have tried to mold jarmon to the 3-4 scheme but it just was not working. I know AA had 900 yds last year, but i think that stat reflected our lack of options at WR rather than how good he is.
everyone is completely calm
some of us don’t like this move.
don’t overreact either.

I'll do my best...
But I am just trying to figure out what in the hell to do with the crate of Jarmon jerseys that I ordered last week and just arrived this morning.
In 8 years I"ll buy one on ebay for $5
so reserve one

I made my peace with this happening when they suggested the 3-4 switch
This was the logical end result. I bet he does really well in John Fox’s 4-3 though and good for him.

Let's Be Honest
Do you think that we as REDSKINS FANS can handle another season if we only win 4 games and our offense only puts up 14 points a game? Now I’m for change but this is not chance this is more of border line insanity.

give it up we arent getting LUCK!
we arent that bad of a team.
No way would we tank the season.
are you serious?
Look at the offense on this team as of right now. They’d be lucky to score 2 TD a game.
DEAD SERIOUS
tell me how buff and cincy are going to have better rcords?
Well the answer is Simple we in the NFC EAST!

and they are in the AFC East and NFC North, arguably tougher divisions

talent-wise we are in league with those two teams
We are officially in the class of teams where the order doesn’t matter.
It’s the lowest class.

Yes, I do
Redskins fans need to see hope for the future. We need to see a future developing.
We don’t need another year of 6-10 or 8-8, while giving playing time to shitty veterans

I can't help but believe we got more value out of such a trade
Gaffney’s a middle of the pack possession receiver and I’d much rather have him than Stallworth
by Dammit Cerrato... on Jul 27, 2011 4:05 PM EDT reply actions
he's not a possession WR
"By far the worst performers on the (Redskins) are in the front office." – Sally Jenkins
so he's an aging deep threat?
that doesn’t make him possession, that makes him useless.
"By far the worst performers on the (Redskins) are in the front office." – Sally Jenkins
He's never been a deep threat receiver
He moves the chains. His Top 3 longest receptions in different seasons have been 69, 56, and 50 yards with every other season having his longest catch be less than 40. Armstrong caught those numbers in one season alone last year. Gaffney is not a deep guy.

I don't know what kind of guy he is
I don’t qualify him as posession
"By far the worst performers on the (Redskins) are in the front office." – Sally Jenkins
maybe they dumped him cause they are swooping in on cullen jenkins, and whats wrong with gaffney he is a decent 3rd down guy all good things said by his former bronco coaches
lohaus #54
He is too old to be a prominent player the next time we are a prominent team
thus he is useless and only hampering the development of our young WRs
Wouldn't this be Funny
What if we got Andrew Luck and he turns out to be the next ryan, russell, or heath instead of Bree, Manning, or Brady. What would happen then?
Id say luck
Will be a very good QB , if we get the 1st or 2nd pick at least we would not have to trade up .The way our games look we will be lucky to win 2 games out of 8 the first half of the season .

The Skins got lucky knocking some key skill players out of games - Go Landry!
by Jefferson1935 on Jul 27, 2011 9:09 PM EDT up reply actions
THAT is very true
especially over the first 5 or 6 weeks. It seemed like we knocked at least one of the opposing offense’s key players out of every game.
What should we do
Not even consider the idea of predicting what might happen next year, strap on our blindfolds, and walk into Fedex field expecting 12-4? Not for me
so you would rather predict 0-16 or 1-15
thats the only way we get luck.
Not at all....
but we should never walk into any field we happen to be playing on and assume a loss…..NOBODY!
Gaffney also made news last year when he provided the gun that teammate Kenny McKinley(notes) used to commit suicide. Gaffney said he sold the gun to McKinley legally.

split with the cowboys
beat the panthers, bills, seahawks, cards, possibly vikings and 49ers
thats a good starting point.
i see 5-7 wins tell me how that gets us luck
We are gonna do a Mike Ditka and trade all for Luck
by NITECRAWLER1G on Jul 27, 2011 4:31 PM EDT up reply actions
Could
we could beat the panthers, bills, seahawks, cards, 49ers. By no means are they gaurenteed wins. Lucky to win 5
Are you forgetting who the QB of this team is?? and what the OL looks like?
That's 5-7 possible wins
How many of those have we won the last couple years? 50, 60%? Our starting QB is Jon Beck, #1 WR 32 year old Santana Moss, #1 RB Ryan Torrain. We are so lacking on offensive talent it’s not even funny. Our defense can probably hang but it’s more like 4 or 5 wins, maybe 6.
WTF?
Let me get this straight, we are loading up on WR’s and haven’t even adressed the most glaring position of need (OL). You could have Jerry Rice, Art Monk, and Randy Moss all in their prime and if your QB is stuck to the ground with the ball you have NO CHANCE. I know its still early and being a Redskins fan you always want to go over the top but we must improve up front and this is our chance to start . C"MON SKINS bolster the OL!!!!

Here you go.
Go USA, Braves, BU Terriers, Irish, Caps, Skins, NU Cats, Wizards, DC United, Washington Freedom
BU Hockey: National Champions 1971, 1972, 1978, 1995, 2009
I've been pretty clear in my questioning of this trade
but after reading these comments I hope that’s true just so I can watch heads exploding like microwave popcorn around here.
Of course, if it’s not true I get to watch Parks ban himself. Meh…win, win.
Someone's going a little overboard with receivers
Exactly how many receivers do we need? And how many former Denver players are we going to keep adding??
Guys I figure it out... the FO is just playing for Andrew Luck... it's gonna be okay!
