Dumbass question

But what does a futures contract mean in the NFL?

by Jim America on Jul 26, 2011 10:15 PM EDT reply actions

Not a dumb question at all.

It means you can sign a player before the league year starts (usually March), but the players you sign cannot be on any NFL roster at the conclusion of the prior season. So these guys were actually signed in February, we just never heard about it.

Not going to lie..

I’m disappointed we didn’t sign more UDFAs and the ones we signed are not in positions of need except OT Smith. This team has won 10 games in the last 2 years and the roster sucks. I don’t care if we have 12 draft picks..90 man roster, sign some MF’in UDFAs.

That we haven't heard via twitter does not mean that.

Some teams have leaked everything, could be that the Redskins are keeping things closer to the vest.

In the long run men hit only what they aim at. Therefore, though they should fail immediately, they had better aim at something high.

Edgar Jones has shown as a Redskins' player on NFL Players for several months and you or someone else

mentioned him on HH – a former Raven. Jeff Stehle was new to me. He is about the size Haslett likes for a 3/4 DE, although a little light. Stehle is 24 and had no NFL stats, hence he can be on the PS – http://www.nfl.com/player/jeffstehle/2507868/profile

Thanks

one of my separating Madden from reality questions.

by Jim America on Jul 27, 2011 12:14 AM EDT up reply actions

He's a better QB than anything else we have access to this season.

Better to keep him and force him to start or hold out (and also keeping him available for trade due to injuries to other QB’s) than to take absolutely useless compensation like this. 6th round picks seldom make rosters. Give me a 4th in 2013 on this deal and I’d take it, but two 6ths? BS.

by tuckwell on Jul 26, 2011 11:31 PM EDT up reply actions

This system is not his match

He spent his whole career reading short to long and Shanahan is trying to get him to do the opposite. If he started, I’d expect similar results to last year. If he held out, his value would drop further man. And don’t knock 6th round picks man.

by BigOLinemen on Jul 26, 2011 11:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm knocking 6ths all day

because that’s not what we need in the next two years. We’ll have much better depth, now we need top-end talent. You find those in the top two rounds, and then rounds 3-4 typically get you guys that are immediate depth and eventual starters. 6th rounders either don’t make the roster or are long-term projects, and aren’t of any real use for trading up into meaningful rounds.

by tuckwell on Jul 26, 2011 11:36 PM EDT up reply actions

We still need depth

And a 4th round pick is not going to provide top end talent. Those two 6th rounders can be used to sure up our still mangled OL. I understand your frustration, but McNabb was not going to be worth a 4th to anyone.

by BigOLinemen on Jul 26, 2011 11:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Clearly he's worth more than two 6s

which is why this deal isn’t done, our FO knows it. Minny is trying to lowball it, and they won’t accept that. Give us a 6 next year and a 4 the next and that’s closer to fair market value. Make no mistake, McNabb is going to succeed in Minn. They have a strong line, a fantastic RB and a great WR corps. They have a nasty enough defense to give the offense time off the field. This is a division contender with McNabb immediately … as much as I like Ponder, he’s going to need time to adjust and would be better served (just like ALL the rookie QBs) serving as backup for a year or two before taking over. McNabb makes them far better the second he lands at the airport for the next season or two, and they know it. They’ll pay more for it than this, and if our guys don’t force that issue, I will truly begin to lose ALL hope.

by tuckwell on Jul 27, 2011 12:09 AM EDT up reply actions

6th's do have value esp. when it comes to trading up

Sure a 6th won’t jump us up draft spots alone, but we could offer a 4th and a 6th to say move up in the 1st round a couple spots instead of offering our 3rd.

Keeping McNabb meant paying him one of the top 7 QB salaries this year, that is just bad business.

Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com

by Steve Shoup on Jul 27, 2011 12:09 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm not saying we will move up 20 spots or even 10

but say we are sitting their at 10 and a QB we want is at 8, we might be able to pull off that deal.

Or maybe it is our 2nd, 4th and 6th rounder to pick up a late 1st rounder to add (enter name of position here) . Sure it isn’t a great pick, but it is hard to say it doesn’t have some trade value. Or depth value if we keep it.

Maybe, just maybe

We can parlay that 6th (or those 6ths) and another low round pick in next year’s draft along with our number 1 pick to move up and grab the QB OTF — Luck or Jones. That’s assuming we don’t suck so bad this year that we can get either of them on our own merits.

McNabb’s just not going to make it stick in DC, so we may as well get SOMEthing for him. Terrible QB move last year… terrible!!

Just saw we traded McNubbs, pending of course

We are not getting Holmes, I don’t think he’ll be able to leave their offer/contending mentality.
Don’t want Rice or Edwards.
I want Kyle Orton, I think that would be a great pick up and he would give us a fairer shot to compete in every game this season. We can’t kid ourselves, we’re not going to be good this season. What we need to hope for is that 2011 isn’t disastrous, resulting in Snyder making an impulsive decision and firing Mike. Others may think he’s more bullet proof, but I disagree.

I think the belief is his filling that NT hole

They’re still going after Cullen Jenkins according to reports, and while he’s smaller at 306lbs, he’s not alone at that size regarding players who play NT. Remember, Haynesworth has the measurables to play NT, but, according to him, he couldn’t. Cofield’s not being 330lbs isn’t going to deter me from believing he can play the position.

Hey so how god damn stupid are our coaches?

If we switched from Haslett’s clusterfuck 3-4 back to the 4-3 we could have a lineup of:

Orakpo-Haynesworth/Jenkins-Cofield-Carricker
Mcintosh-Fletcher-Alexander
Hall-Atogwe-Landry-Rogers/Barnes/FA Corner

Now that’s a fearsome front four and a definite top ten defense which actually fits the skills/talents of our personnel. In this blow hard 3-4 we still need another pass rusher OLB, a real NT, and Mcintosh is playing out of position as a 3-4 MLB, London fletcher is too small to fend off guards coming off the line all game long, and orakpo has demonstrated he is more effective as a 4-3 DE than a stand up OLB that has to cover sometimes as he had his best year as a rookie when he was used as a 4-3 DE a significant amount of the time.

oh shit forgot about him

guess i assumed we didn’t have a first round pick this year like we usually don’t…but that just makes my case even stronger as kerrigan would best serve as a 4-3 DE with his hand in the ground going after the QB and ball carrier every down instead of having to try to cover and play zone half the time with his non existent passing coverage skills. fuck haslett…
