The Case for Keeping/Cutting Albert Haynesworth

Albert Haynesworth has always been a hot topic for us redskins fans.  He went from being our shiny new toy to possibly the most hated man in DC.  Here, on Hogs Haven, his exploits have been well documented and well-criticized.  At this point, we face a crossroads: should Albert stay or should he go?

The Case for Cutting the big man

1. He has off-field issues -- from the sexual assault charge to the possible road rage to refusing Shanny,  there is very little I can say to justify his behavior.  He has become the definition of a prick.

2. He is a bad influence -- We are in the process of a youthful rebuilding.  Next year, on defense, we will have atleast 2 new young starters playing closely with the defensive line (Kerrigan, Jenkins?, Bryant?, Nield?) and they don't need any contamination leaking through.  Shanahan went to great efforts to draft team leaders but it could all go to waste if Haynesworth plants a seed of corruption in any of their minds.

3. Effort -- AH has never, even at the peak of his career, played every snap he should.  He could be so good but he's just not there.  There's also the well-documented incidents of lack of effort on the field such as when he lay down against the Eagles.

Star-divide

4. Sending a Message-- After suspending Haynesworth and dealing with all his nonsense for so long, Shanahan would be 100% justified to cut AH.  Doing so would send a message to D. Hall, Banks, or any other potential off-field issues that NOTHING will be tolerated.  If your going to screw around, do it some place else.

5. Age -- This is something that I have yet to see any major posts about yet.  Albert Haynesworth will be 30 before next season.  Now that's not old but it does mean that his production should begin to fall and that is if he gets on the field

6. Scheme fit -- This is Albert's constant refrain here in DC.  He has yet to be used correctly.  He complained that Blatche didn't use him right and I don't think anyone thinks that now is better.  He is not a 3-4 NT and doesn't want to be.  He was dominant in Tennessee's system and clearly he should return to his successful system.

The case for keeping him

1. Dominance -- There is a reason that we paid AH $100 million.  He was and can still be, the most dominant defensive tackle in the game.  He has two probowls under his belt and he could return this defense to its top five days

2. He makes the defense around him better -- Orakpo, D. Hall, Landry, Fletcher are all better when AH is being double teamed.  I don't have a stat on this but I remember many more plays that Orakpo could get to the QB when Haynesworth was on the field.  Last year, when AH wasn't on the field nearly as much, Rak seemed to regress and stopped sacking people.

3. Raising Rookies -- Now, I've already addressed that he could be a terrible mental influence on our youth.  That said, Haynesworth's dominance isn't purely mental.  He has physical skills which I would love to rub off on Nield, Kerrigan, Jenkins.  He would also give Jenkins a little bit of cushion time to get up to pro speed.

4. Lack of compensation --  Haynesworth's value may be at an all time low this off-season.  We will never get the equivalent of his true on the field value for him.  He has off-field issues, hasn't played in a while, and has too long term a contract to warrant any team giving up a high draft pick.  If we cut him, we get nothing for all our trouble

5. Contract -- Haynesworth has been paid and paid well but at this point, he is not that expensive for an ex-pro bowl DT until 2013 when he receives a 20 million dollar signing bonus.  Till then he receives on 5.4 mil and 7.2 mil a year (http://www.extremeskins.com/showthread.php?281844-SI-MMQB-Haynesworth-s-REAL-contract-breakdown-plus-Canty-Skins).

6.  Revenge -- This is a terrible reason but I'm not sure Shanny's ego will let Haynesworth go.  He has worked too hard and pulled too many strings to leave him to sign with another team.  The first two reasons on this list will ensure that someone takes a chance on him.  If he succeeds elsewhere, we get nothing and Haynesworth is free to rag on the Skins all he wants from his high horse on a new team.  If he fails, we still get nothing except the pain that we paid a failure 35.6 million dollars.

Personally, I would keep the man through the end of 2012.  We gain almost nothing tangible from cutting him.  Keep him and there is a chance that our Defense could be dominant this year (though our O will still suck).

So what do you guys think?

PS: any suggestions for my first major post?

Counter to the case for keeping him number one…

I don’t think even at his best, Ainsworth has a chance of being in the top five at defensive tackle. I can think of two tackles on Detroit’s team that will always be better than him.

The dude was a mess when he was with the Tennessee Titans, the only reasonably good year he had was his contract year. He had free agent bust written all over his fat ass-but then again as we all know Danny and Vinny have always been dumb and dumber.

 CUT HIS ASS
(and yes I was against this move and the Donovan McNabb move from the start)

The world looks mighty different when you're peeking out your belly button

"Reasonably good" is a pretty big understatement.

“Most dominant defensive player in the league” is a better descriptor of his performance that season.

I’d totally agree that he’s inconsistent and will almost certainly never come close to that kind of production on our defense. However, he’s still got the talent to be an elite 4-3, and probably a pretty damned good 3-4 DE or NT. It’s just too bad he has no interest in playing those last two positions.

I don’t want him around the team unless he’s playing hard (not likely). Still, he’s cheap enough for now, that I wouldn’t cut him. I would HATE to give Albert the satisfaction of tearing it up for some other team after the royal screwing he gave us. Let that asshole rot on the practice squad for a couple years. I’d accept a 2nd rounder or better for him. Otherwise, keep him.

Let's hold on to him.

Let’s convince him that if he plays 3-4 DE and plays hard and well then we can trade him and he can have his signing bonus in 2013, maybe even another lucrative contract for another team. We can tell him he gets nothing if he doesn’t play hard, because we’ll cut him after his last cheap season if he doesn’t.

We have the fucker backed into a corner. He’s going to play dominantly or possibly never play again.

Agreed

just keep him and move him around the line, it is known he’s not the NT so he can be just as disruptive just like Ngata for the Ravens by playing the DE slot. Pretty much no one wants AH and this is what the organization have to deal with.

The game that stood out was the Skins against the Raiders. Haynesworth did not play in that game and Orakpo had his best sack game. The defensive coordinator at the time did not agree with the notions that Haynesworth helped Orakpo and maybe other defensive players.
Haynesworth did not like to maintain gap responsibility.

Haynesworth

Line him up and just let him rush, might cause trouble for the offense ….. nothing works pull him out …

by juanpan on May 7, 2011 11:22 PM EDT reply actions

I can't understand why any Redskin fans would want to keep Albert Haynesworth

He has been a disruptive force in the locker room since Mike Shanahan announced his plan to go to a 3-4 D. He is constantly an embarrassment to the organization with his off the field problems. He was out of shape & consistently beat last year at every position he played, ( & yes I know he had a few shining moments but over all he was less than mediocre) He is a cancer to the type of team that the front office looks to be putting together after this last draft. Where is he going to line up at ?? Carriker will be at the RDE & Kerrigan will be the LDE, we know he won’t play NT (I still have a hard time believing that a football player receiving the amount of money as he does refusing to play a position on the defensive line). He is not the dominating force that he was in Tennessee or even the disruptive player that he was his 1st year in Washington. He is an out of shape, extremely rich A-hole who no longer has the desire to be a football player in the NFL IMHO & we need to get rid of his sorry ass as soon as we can

Like I said.

If he decides not to cooperate, he can be suspended for the entire season. He’ll miss his game checks and with just 5.4 million I don’t think he’ll hold out long, especially if we make it clear that 2012 will be the same and then nobody will want to sign him to another contract. We also need to upgrade Carriker, he’s average at best.

by TheDeepBall on May 8, 2011 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions

We've already been down this road
If he decides not to cooperate

He decided not to cooperate last offseason & was a major distraction the entire year. He divides locker rooms & continues to make the Redskin organization look inept every time he is arrested/goes to court/is sued or any of the other problems he is always bringing on himself. We need to get rid of him. Carriker will improve, as will Orakpo when we put some talent on the other end of our Line & take some of the double teams off of them

by ENsDad27 on May 8, 2011 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions

AS MUCH TROUBLE AS HE WAS

We should just keep him and make him set on the sideline until his contracts up , either make him pay some of the money back or let him know he will be setting his entire contract period. See fat albert thinks if he pisses shanny or danny off enough that they will get tired of him and cut him and even though it would free up room on our roster i think he should pay for his asshole ways towards our team and make him set there and do nothing and waste away . Yeah i know he is a cancer on the team but tell him he has to set on the far side prefer the other side lol . I think by making him set and making him aware that he will set the entire contract he going to do one or two things either he will beg the coach or owner that he really wants to play and be part of this team and do everything he is suppose to do or just set thats your 2 options like it or not and i think for his carreer if he wants to play again he better get the load stones out of his rear and stop acting like a jerk towards the coach period.

by washingtonwin on May 8, 2011 1:13 PM EDT reply actions

As attractive as that option is

I don’t think that sitting on the sideline & continuing to collect checks from the Redskin organization would bother AH, it might be his dream job.

by ENsDad27 on May 8, 2011 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions

WELL TRUE BUT

They could find ways to keep suspending him one way or another . He will hate being on this team more in more and by him just setting around like this he knows that it will be harder to play football as he gets older. As much as i would love to get rid of this bum i also wanna make him pay for accepting all that money he did not earn , he needs to be taught a lesson one way or another . If he was my teammate i would try and take his knees out so he could not play again after the way he has acted when other teammates play harder for way less money and he sets on his rear and half hardly play at all . He has let alot of guys down and acted way to much like a spoiled baby , in my opion i hope the charges he in trouble for i hope he gets convicted and sent to prison like mike the iron tyson because he needs to be taught a lesson for his actions period . But if not cut him im kinda tired of this spoiled man child anyway.

Haynesworth has ballooned up to 380ish.

Someone posted a photo of him on twitter a few days ago…He’ll be 400 by next week.

His lawyer said he wanted an early trial

so Albert can attend training camp. Don’t know what, if anything, that means, but it could mean he is ready to get back to football after all his troubles.

by Donnio1234 on May 12, 2011 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Bad news if true, no matter what you think of him

I was hoping that he would come back strong, come to the OTAs, etc. A big question to me is whether he actually can play DE in the 3-4, and whether he thinks he can. I always thought that he didn’t want to play in the 3-4 because he wasn’t sure he could play in it – i.e., he wasn’t confident he could learn it and do it.

by Donnio1234 on May 8, 2011 7:20 PM EDT reply actions

Keep him on the off chance he regains some semblance of value and then trade him away

I think that some other team will take a chance on him if we don’t ask too high of a price PLUS if we trade him we have some control as to where he goes – as in NOT to a division rival.

by aFan4Life on May 9, 2011 8:34 AM EDT reply actions

We should put him on the practice squad.

Of course we can't

I wonder if by any chance he is thinking of playing NT? On the face of it (talking as one who knows nothing about line play), nose tackle would seem to be conceptually easy, that is, it’s clear what you want to do – hold your ground, don’t let anybody move you, clog up as much of an area as you can. Some on HH think that he would be a great NT if he really wanted it. He just hasn’t wanted it, for reasons unknown.

by Donnio1234 on May 9, 2011 10:28 AM EDT up reply actions

he's really not a plugger

he’s a “bust through the line and wreck havoc in the backfield” kind of guy.

by aFan4Life on May 9, 2011 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions

That's what they all say,

but isn’t a nose tackle also supposed to wipe out the guys attacking him? I remember how Kemoeatu got pushed back, rather than moving forward. Theoretically Albert wouldn’t have to cover gaps or move laterally as much, basically just stand there and not get pushed around, and also drive forward toward the passer on pass plays. I don’t know how the role of 3-4 DE compares to NT or 4-3 DT or DE, but I hope Jim can figure it out. It would be great if Albert found a position for which he was suited. By the way, there was a time last year when the coaches seemed happy with him, and one time Haslett said jokingly that Albert was playing NT and didn’t even know it. AH went downhill from the moment he said that, which makes me wonder a bit. But if true, it suggests that Haynesworth can be useful, if he’ll only try.

by Donnio1234 on May 9, 2011 1:05 PM EDT reply actions

Time to turn the page with Haynesworth.

Can’t keep waiting and wishing and hoping and praying and begging that he finally decides he wants to be a productive member of the team.

I bet if we could somehow sneak a case and a half of jelly donuts five yards behind the quarterback on every play, we would see a solid effort out of Albert consistantly.

Until the league let’s us do that, I say we roll him down a big hill in Dallas, and wait for the collision with their new stadium. Youtube highlight moment, or America’s Biggest Makeover.

Great idea if the lockout ever ends

No decision from the 8th Circuit yet – maybe waiting till the June 3 hearing to do anything – which would mean the lockout stays.

Betch Shanny will be ready to pull the trigger, the second FA begins...

If he works FA the way he worked the Draft… I’ll be a happy camper!

by 1x1an on May 9, 2011 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions

My wish was that they cut his fat ass after the end of last season.

Right now, Albert is the franchise player of this team for all the wrong reasons. I don’t care where he goes. He can play for the Cowboys and sack John Beck 6 times each in both of our meetings, and it’s still better than having him on this team! I just want him OUT OF DC, PERIOD! Bruce and Mike still don’t get it do they?
