Who's The Worst Redskins RB Of All-Time?
This is where the fun starts! The top 2 running backs in our poll will be the official starters for our all-time worst Redskins squad. Will it be the guy who has just 2 more career yards rushing than I do...but on 5 more carries (Larry Johnson)? Maybe you prefer TJ Duckett, whom the Redskins traded a 3rd round pick for and in exchange we got a 250lb running back who couldn't gain a yard on 3rd and 1, or 1st and 10 for that matter. You can get a recap of each candidates qualifications by clicking on my original post. I'll add an open selection to the poll under other, you can list your "write in" candidate in the comments section.

Timmy Smith, that's just harsh!
I know he played for the Cows**ts as well, but he helped us win the superbowl with an incredible one-off performance. For that reason he doesn’t deserve to be on this list!

Seriously
That performance alone (as a rookie I might add, 5th rounder) makes him one of the BEST Skins RBs ever IMO. He still holds the record for most rushing yards in a Super Bowl, AS A REDSKIN for cripe pete.

Oh, now wait.
I wouldn’t put the Timmmah in as the worst RB ever (not even sure he belongs on this list to be voted on!) but other than the playoffs that year (yeah, he was outstanding the whole playoffs that year), he did SQUAT. The next year he was supposed to be the featured back and I think he ended the season with something 470 yards, way underachieving for us with a 3.0 yard per carry average, only 3 TDs, and only 53 yards recieving in 14 games (and he wasn’t hurt). His longest carry was 29 yards and his biggest reception was 16 yards.
In his rookie season, during the REGULAR season, he got some time, too… he played in 7 games, carried 29 times for 126 yards, 4.3 yards per with one catch for -2 yards in the regular season. His longest regular season carry was only 15 yards, but he was consistently decent (4.3 was Riggos ypc during those years, too, but Riggo could sometimes explode well for longer carries).
He downright SUCKED for Dallas, playing only one game, with 6 carries for 6 yards, with 3 on one carry….not good even on an AWFUL Dallas team.
Where he shined was the playoffs; in 1987 he played all three playoff games for us, and had three of his four longest carreer runs (that 29 yarder he had in 1988 was his fourth longest); he was 16 for 66 yards (4.1 ypc, with a long of 13) against the Bears, 13 for 72 (5.5 ypc with a long of 34, his second longest carrer run) against the Vikings; actually not all that good if you take the one long run out, but he was effective), and of course he had his superbowl game, his “perfect game” with 22 for 204 (9.3 ypc), a long of 58 yards (his third longest was 31 yards, IIRC, also in that game), 2 TDs (40% of his carreer TDs) and one reception for 9 yards. For the postseason, he was 51 for 342 yards (6.7 ypc) with 2 TDs, and obviously 1 for 9 yards in recieving.
He was the featured back through the entire Playoffs, but was NOT the featured back much during the regular season; that honor went to George Rogers; Timmy was slowly working his way in as a change of pace for the fading (fast) Rogers, and techically, Smith had a better year all around, thouigh he gained fewer yards and of course had less TDs (Rogers had injuries and only played 11 games, but still way out carried Smith and ended up with 163 for 613 (3.8 ypc) with a long of 29 for the season, and 6 TDs, adding in 4 receptions for 24 yards. Even in the Playoffs, Smith had to share carries with Rogers, who had 23 carries for 76 yards (3.3 ypc) with a long of 9 and 1 TD, plus 1 for 11 in receptions) Rogers best game came against Min, where he was 12 for 46, though he got the TD against Chicago. Rogers has a poor 5 for 17 (3.4 ypc) with a long of 5 in the Superbowl.
So basically, Timmy was number 3 of a tro that season, and was slightly more effective than the fading Rogers (the Superbowl was Rogers last game) statistically (BTW, Kelvin Bryant was the #2 guy, 77 carries for 406 yards (5.3 ypc) with 1 TD). Heck, our best guy on a per game basis was one of the scrubs, Lionel Vital, 80 carries for 346 yards, (4.3 ypc) with 2 TDs…. but then he’s a trivia question, since I don’t believe he played ever again after the scrub games (and of course, now you know why we were 3-0 in the scrub games….)
Randall FREAKING Cunningham had more yards from scrimmage rushing than Bryant and Smith, BTW.
So, Timmy showed promise, and had one great game, but I’d nominate Vital as a better RB than Smith for his career; we wouldn’t even remember Smith if not for that Superbowl… and he got his ring for that.

But......
……He helped to win us a Superbowl! For that reason alone he should be remembered with fondness and not for not living up to expectations! He was only in the league 3 years, spent 2 as a Redskins and was a big factor in us winning a Superbowl!
Yes, he was.
So he doesn’t deserve to be ranked in the “worst” group.
BUT the mesage I was responding to said he was one of the best… and he wasn’t.
He wouldn’t be one of the worst regardless, but he was NOT a good RB; just because he had one brief, shining, superstar moment doesn’t mean he should be considered good.
I’m reminded of a song very popular and still fairly new at that time… “Glory Days”. That moment was Timmy Smith’s Glory Days. And he has a shining ring, and a nice little MVP trophy to show for it…. but that’s all it ever was.
No Danny, Nooooooo - Tom Landry, 1982., and Washington Redskins fans, 1999-
I agree he is definitely not one of the best ever,
I wouldn’t be able to rank him because he had career stats to rival some of our worst RB’s, but achieved more in his short time than most of our best RB’s! For that reason I couldn’t rank him!
Timmy does not belong on this list
Yes, he did nothing after his rookie season, but when you seriously help put the metal in the trophy case, you get a bye.
Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
Why am I leaning to
Kijana Carter? (Sorry Tiller) No.1 overall pick in 1995 drafted by Bungles. Tore ACL on 1st pro carry and never recovered. Yet, still we picked him up in 2001-2 season. 10yrs in NFL – 1,441 yds total. What were we thinking?
Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
he didn't fair badly w/ the Skins
for purposes of these polls, we are grading the players solely on the performance w/ the Redskins. Carter was brought in on the cheap to be the 3rd down back as Stephen Davis was the starter. Carter still rushed for 300+ yards and averaged nearly 5 yds per carry…not to shabby
Cheers and Hail

Jacoby Jones went the next pick….Vinny definitely would have taken him there and that might have prevented the 3 WRs snowball disaster effect. Dang…this might be worth a post.

He only played 8 games in 2009, I'm pretty sure he's never been to the Pro Bowl.

Skimming through Mile High report they seemed pretty high on him and the toe injury he suffered in their game 7 (after starting the season 6-0) he missed the next 5 games and then re-injured it sitting him out for the season.
Seems like they think he as a huge part of that 6-0 effort and he probably wasn’t playing at 100% this past season. They said it takes 24-30 months till it’s fully recovered.
"You're fucking out!"
I think Brown is a better option at this point.
I think he’s slightly better than Harris, but Harris is younger. It seems like toe injuries are some of the most nagging and reoccurring injuries in sports.

I think Harris is the better option because he is younger. Their both coming off a recovery year of serious injuries, Harris has been playing right tackle his entire career while Brown is still making the transition. But either way, we need a right tackle and if it’s Brown I hope he can improve on his performance from last year.
Well the difference is being able to play versus
being able to play at a probowl level. This injury is severe and usually takes 24-30 months of recovery. I’m glad he’s able to be back on the field and I would guess he’s about 80% and hoping to be 90% by the start of the season. He’s had the very best specialists take care of him. How will he be able to respond to the grind of practice and games with pain, weakness, and even arthritis in the joint are things no one knows yet. The difference is he may not be as effective as before the injury until next year. It’s going to be interesting to see how he responds.

TOO HARD TO CHOOSE

How about Ricky Ervins???
He had a decent first year when we won the super bowl behind Earnest Byner…but seriously, what happened after that???
Or Reggie Brooks?
Lot’s to choose from but I think fatpickle nailed the top 5.

You Forgot Your History
Most of the nominees are from recent years. There have been so many other canddtates throughout the years that they boggle the mind. But I believe Duane Thomas has to be right up there with the best (or is it worst) of them . One of the Gibbs I rehab projects who was cast off from the Cowboys in the 70’s for being a head case as I recall, signed with great fanfare only to gain less than 500 yds over 3 years with the Skins.
