Community Project: Buying a Jersey

If only the Redskins had a player this cool then it would make my decision so much easier. BTW this lockout is awful for the Rookies they don't even know the size of a NFL regulation ball!

I'm at a major crossroads in my Redskins life, I need to buy a new jersey. I've only owned three Skins jerseys my whole life and each has its own story, well kind of. Buying a jersey is like a long term investment to me, I want a guy that's going to be a productive member of the team for a long time, but at the same time I don't want someone who is trendy or the #1 fan favorite (Chris Cooley in our case). I'm also the kind of person where if the name on my back is no longer on the squad then off to charity or some homeless guy the jersey goes.

First, lets examine my jersey history...

Star-divide

The first Skins jersey I ever had was a Gus Frerotte jersey, where did it come from? I have no idea. I really wish whomever did give it to me would of snagged a Darrell Green jersey for me instead.  My second jersey I bought the night before I went to college, I remember it well, it was the night of the HOF game and Clinton Portis's Skins debut. This jersey gave me a good 6 or 7 year ride and was by far the best choice I could of made. My most recent jersey purchase came last year. I was at Flying Squirrels game (Richmond's AA Baseball Team) and had a couple of 32 oz beers (best part of Squirrels games) and decided what better way to torment my friends who are Eagles fans than with a DMac jersey!  Man was I looking up to date and good at the Houston game at FedEx, with visions of McNabb leading us back to the promised land and me rubbing it in the Eagles fans faces. Well we all know how that investment worked out.

So now what? I need a new jersey and I don't know who to get. I don't want a throwback or to go the ST21 route. I want to take a risk and not follow the mainstream, but I'm just not sure who to get.

Although I want to get a jersey now,

I’ll be wearing my Orakpo until mid October, at which time I’ll decide weather or not to get Hankerson or possibly another.

Sound strange/picky... But for some reason I like wearing jersey numbers 1-19, I don't like to look down at # in the 80s.

I wore #2 in every sport I ever played, so maybe that’s why. Sounds kind of ridiculous haha.

I wear
  1. in all the sports I play haha… but I’ve got my Sean Taylor red n altern – and landry white – if hankerson becomes legit – he’ll be the first WR jersey I’d own even though my all time favs are isaac bruce and reggie wayne

by Kia.Area51 on May 24, 2011 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Get a TW #71

no one is wearing that one. It’s not in the 80’s, and he’ll likely be a skin for a decade.

I got Tiger Blood running through my veins!

Not for someone who is 5'11 and 185 lbs...

i’m way to slim to wear an oline jersey…..it’s like seeing a 300lb guy with a banks jersey, it would just look ridiculous

haha I'm right there with you I'm 6'1, 185 I just can't do it.

Damn

Then I guess I can only get punter jerseys…

Which I’ve been DYING to have, we just haven’t had a punter worthy of it.

OLine FTW

Ex lineman, 6’7" 350 lbs, guess I’m stuck. I would love to wear a QB jersey, but that would look ridiculous. I was so rooting for us to sign JaWalrus Russell…..

I've had a similar road traveled my friend

first: Champ Bailey
- LaVar Arrington
- Mark Brunell (‘05 season had everyone excited, anyone who says otherwise is lying..)
- Clinton Portis
Last: Jason Campbell
so other than sometimes representing the Arrington jersey, I’d like a new addition myself. I’ve thought of maybe a Sean Taylor one, but prolly not.
The thing I think everyone needs to keep in mind is that Nike has signed on to replace Reebok as the NFL’s main retailer of uniform’s, equipment, merch, etc after this year. So I would suggest waiting until after the 2011 season so you’re not out of date after one year. That’s what I’m doing.
high risk/high reward though could be Hankerson.

by Dammit Cerrato... on May 23, 2011 8:41 PM EDT reply actions

I know exactly what you mean...LOL

If I buy a jersey, I want it to be a guy’s jersey that I am pretty sure will be on our team for years to come. I don’t want to get a guy’s jersey that is a season or two away from likely being traded, released or lost in free agency. With that being said, the safest choice for me would probably be Brian Orakpo’s jersey.

by redskinsfan909 on May 23, 2011 8:43 PM EDT reply actions

Hankerson's Jersey..........

wouldn’t be a bad choice either (considering the excitement he’s generating right now), but I think I would probably wait to see where he fits in on the team after this season (because after all, NOTHING is guaranteed in life right)……LOL

by redskinsfan909 on May 23, 2011 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions

That's why I'm more comfortable buying a college jersey instead!

They don’t put names on the back. My Ohio State No. 2 works great cuz before Terrelle Pryor, there was Malcolm Jenkins, and before that Mike Doss. After Pryor, who knows it’ll prolly be some silly WR or another DB like Christian Bryant :P

No dirty thirty?

Surprised you included both atogwe and dhall but not landry. Both those guys are older and Landry will more than likely be here for a while. I would wait until after the season to get a rookies jersey, and would sport the ports jersey untIl then. I’d go orakpo or Williams if picking right now.

Landry and Hall are less than a year apart. Not a big fan of either.

I should of included him, he slipped my mind.

For the record, I picked other. Specifically, I would get a Lorenzo Alexander jersey. I actually came close to pulling the trigger on that one last year, but couldn’t justify the expense.

by Andrew Necci on May 23, 2011 9:23 PM EDT reply actions

I think you gotta go with Orakpo

If there is one player who I just love on this team, it’s Orakpo. The dude is a monster, and with another OLB threat, and hopefully improvements yet to be made to our DL, he will destroy people

by BigOLinemen on May 23, 2011 9:24 PM EDT reply actions

I have the Cooley and ST21

But considering a new one.
I’ll wait for November amd see how the rookies pan out before I make my next decision.

I love this jersey more than the son I'll never have

and prob won’t sell it. But I would like to have some idea what it’s worth. Anyone have any ideas? As far as I know, here are some factors that might affect the price:

Sean Taylor (RIP) no longer being with us in human form.

  1. Rookie number.

Game cut jersey.

Burgundy. (I heard somewhere the skins only sell jerseys from games they won. Is this true? If so, there must not be very many on the market.)

If it was game worn I'd say $1,750-$2000 but since it's not probably like $200, $400 max.

That’s a total guess though.

Getting Neild on your jersey would be like fast-tracking yourself onto the DC Sports Bog!

I remember Paul Lukas mentioning the Washington teams and their inability to spell on Uni Watch before as well.

by Stephen Beagrie on May 24, 2011 7:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Throwbacks remain the choice....

…they don’t become outdated and they honour the Redskins that deserve it most.

Over the years, M+N have taken my cash for Slingin’ #33, Diesel #44, Money #81 and QB #17 (our SB winning QB, rather than our more maligned recent QB). I may well get a LFB #59 one day too, great player and the right character to join that group.

I also want a Jacoby #66 in burgundy more than I want children. Hangman #55 would also be sweet.

by Stephen Beagrie on May 24, 2011 7:43 AM EDT reply actions

You should get a Jenkins #99 jersey,

He will be a starter for a long time and I guarantee you won’t find another person with that jersey! Although you shouldn’t really listen to me as I’m stuck with TAYLOR #55!
Yeah, you remember him, what a waste of a 2nd round pick!

Repurposing my Brandon Lloyd 85 jersey

Any ideas on how to re-purpose my old Brandon Lloyd jersey into a Hankerson one? Don’t really want to go the masking tape/sharpie route. Iron-on name plate maybe?

by TKESkinsFan on May 24, 2011 10:21 AM EDT reply actions

I've always gone with the guys I grew up watching

I have a Riggins #44, and a Monk #81. I did see a funny one last season when Portis was running his mouth about the female reporter. the next week there a #53 with Packages over the number.

by monk81 on May 24, 2011 12:56 PM EDT reply actions

Could be worse...

The only two jerseys that I ever bought were a Terry Allen and a Jason Campbell. Well, my mom bought me the Terry Allen when I was in middle school. I bought the Campbell myself over safer picks like Taylor and Cooley. Nothing was worse than saddling my poor dog with the name Ramsey though. Sorry, Ramsey. I’m so scarred that I don’t know if I could ever buy another jersey that didn’t say Green or Monk.

by GRAIG on May 24, 2011 1:12 PM EDT reply actions

I love that Dirty #30 was not on the list

Earlier this year I was in the same predicament but out of nowhere my girl threw a 75th anniversary shadow jersey of ST21.

Yes I read that you don’t want to go throwback but I say go Monk or Green because
Who on this current squad will be on the team and making an impact for the next 3-5 years?

Jerseys of O-Lineman are weak to me. We buy jersey’s for the superstar quality of the player. Not pancake blocks or Sacks rendered.

With all that said I vote for Hankerson despite the fact that he is getting sooo much hype (which is never a good thing, especially for this team) without ever running a route in the league.
