Q&A With 7th Round Draft Pick Markus White
Recently, I had a chance to exchange a few questions with 7th round pick LB Markus White out of FSU. Now in a time-frame when most may think a 7th round pick in the aftermath of drafting 12 players would equal out to a trip to the practice squad or maybe even cut from the team, you may want to rethink your thoughts on this one. The main reason Markus slipped as far as he did in the draft is because many teams were scared off by the seizures that he has endured since the 7th grade. That did not stop him from getting 8 sacks and 58 tackles last year at Florida State though (Highlight Video) and Markus has not had a seizure since 2008. After exchanging a few thoughts with him I can see he is determined to succeed and be successful in the NFL.
(HTTR4LIFE) Let me start by saying thanks for your time and Welcome to DC! How does it feel to have a team with such a storied tradition and the best fans in the NFL draft you?(MW)"Well 1st and foremost, I want to say that it is an honor and great opportunity to have a chance to do what I love in front of such a fan base and in our Nation’s Capital. It has felt great so far I’m just feeling blessed for the opportunity to seize the moment."
(HTTR4LIFE) Tell all the Redskins fans a little about yourself, where you’re from, who your favorite football team was growing up, etc.
(MW)"I’m from West Palm Beach Florida which is South Florida for those who don’t know and I naturally grew up being a Dolphins fan, my father and big brother are as well, so I followed the rotation. I grew up mainly playing basketball although I excelled in football. I was inspired by people around me to follow my dreams so here I am today a proud Washington Redskin."
(HTTR4LIFE) At 6-4, and 266 pounds your size is perfect for the 3-4 Linebacker position, but you played DE at FSU. Which spot do you prefer and has anyone given you any ideas on which position you will play?
(MW) "I have been training to play the 3-4 positioned OLB all spring and I'm looking forward to playing that position for the Redskins. I have a lot more experience at DE but I’m willing to take on the challenge of learning a new position and also be able to exploit my athleticism to the world while doing so."
(HTTR4LIFE) Any thoughts on the current lock-out in the NFL and how it affects you as an un-signed rookie? And have you had a chance to speak with any of your new teammates?
(MW)"I feel the lock out makes it a little tougher for an incoming rookie in many ways, but I'm just patiently waiting for them to confirm there being a season in 2011 and if I get that, I’ll be satisfied and all I can do after that is take everything in as fast as possible and give it my all. I haven’t really gotten to reach out to any of my teammates other than my former teammate Graham Gano. He welcomed me in and everything. Now, I’m anxious to be introduced to the system I'll be competing to become a part of."
(HTTR4LIFE) This one is important, just how do you feel about the Dallas Cowboys?
(MW)"I feel like there can be no better feeling than competing against America's team multiple times a year for the victory!!! It’s what the game is all about."

well, seems like a decent enough guy...
reasonably well spoken even if he did make a few major flubs. Considering his medical history, I am not sure if “seize the moment” was the way to go. I am also not at all sure what “exploit my athleticism to the world” actually means. I will give him a one time pass on the last one because he is a rook, but he should definitely no better than to call the Cowboys “america’s team” around these parts…..someone needs to school him on that one with a quickness.
Omg i couldn't agree more.
I cringed as well.

He seemed to be around the ball a lot...
…whenever I saw FSU games on TV and made plays in the backfield. This is good news.
I remember the Oklahoma game on his highlight reel well, the Sooners murdered FSU but White stood out and didn’t give up.
Oh, and F*ck the C*wb*ys.

sooo
Take a stud defensive end and move him to LB. A proven recipe for success.

I like the kid I think he can make the transition

hope so....
Which side did he play end on in college? Do you think he will be backing up on Orakpo’s side?
He was primarily their LE, but i believe he has experience on both sides
I’m not sure which side they will put him, but i think he is capable at both. Everything I’ve read has said he is a hard worker and a great teammate I think he will quickly emerge as 3rd on our depth chart.

Thats awesome...
Would be a huge bonus if he can come in and really contribute in a positive way. I think Nield will be a contributor as well. I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself, but this draft does have some very nice potential.
I agree
It might take both players a year to really contribute, but I like the potential.

I agree,I think he will make the transition fairly quick. Not being able to practice the system (lock-out) may hurt him a little at first. I think he could make a push to back up Orakpo his rookie year.
I could see it.
That’s a pretty big push, though. I think you’re looking at the third-string OLB, backup situational DE and special teamer for the first year. I love Markus’s motor, he never stops going, but to be totally honest, he wouldn’t have been quite as successful if FSU hadn’t had a sack monster on the other end of the line. Brandon Jenkins is getting preseason ACC Defensive POY talk for a reason. White definitely has a higher ceiling than your average 7th rounder though, and I love getting a good character guy that has a chance to contribute meaningfully in so many ways.
Love the interview!
Except for America’s Team. Because they were good in the 90’s? gimme a break!

Yup, that's one strike right there..
America’s team my ass!
Think of if as being sarcastic.
Markus might not have been exposed to much Cowboys-Redskins hatred down in South Florida and Tallahassee. Give him one minicamp and he’ll be fine :)
The kid has already overcome many hurdles in his life (seizures), and will have too overcome many more.
Men like him and Herzlich, have the heart to overcome any obstacle that comes their way… that’s what we need. Look at any Special Forces group. The ones that make it, are not necessarily the most physically gifted… but rather… the ones with more heart!

White is running into stiff competition at either OLB position. He will likely end up on the PS. He does have good
speed, but not exceptional at the 40 yard and the 20 and 10 yard splits: 4.86, 2.79, and 1.72 seconds respectively.
I must admit...
I felt like there were some real head scratchers as I was watching the draft, the more I read about some of these guys the better I feel about it. I am admittedly overly optimistic at times, but I really think they did a great job in this draft. While they might have reached/took a chance on some of these guys I think they potentially filled a lot of needs with high character guys, most of which have a very high potential ceiling. Really looking foward to getting these guys out on the field.
