Washington Redskins Top Ten Biggest Draft Busts: Desmond Howard

So you think Michael Westbrook was not a bust at #4 overall for the Washington Redskins? I can see that. But what about this #4 overall wide receiver? For those keeping track, let it not be said we only called out Vinny Cerrato. This pick was Joe Gibbs' selection. Coming off a Super Bowl victory, Joe Gibbs decided that the franchise could afford a luxury pick at the top of the first round. They viewed the Heisman Trophy winner as a big-play wide receiver that could spark the offense with his quick-strike abilities.

This was a mistake.

Howard did make his mark in the league as a gifted special teams contributor--he was the MVP of Super Bowl XXXI--but he only stayed on Washington's roster from 1992-1994.

Come on Hogs Haven...this guy was a draft bust right?

Star-divide

Interesting note from the 1992 draft: Three first-rounders taken in the top 12 of that draft ended up on our team at some point in their careers: Sean Gilbert (#3), Troy Vincent (#7) and Marco Coleman (#12). Sean Gilbert even netted us 2 first-round picks in a trade Carolina simply should never have made. Thanks Panthers!

I was only 8 at the time, but I don't follow the logic of drafting a return guy at 4?

Were they expecting him to be a Percy Harvin type player? Without the migraines of course…

Pretty much but

At Michigan we wasn’t just a return guy he was the most explosive player on the field & a pretty good WR to.

I'm worried about the beer supply. After this case, and the other case, there's only one case left- Barney Gumble

This.

I was enthused we had him too, until he proved unable to run good routes AND get seperation, AND get the ball.

2 out of 3 on any one play, but not all three. That was his knock; he couldn’t put it all together on one play. But hell yeah, he was a gifted return man; with him and BMitch at the time, we had the best returners in the league.

No Danny, Nooooooo - Tom Landry, 1982., and Washington Redskins fans, 1999-
