I know, I know....I'm getting a little ahead of myself here. We're less than a month away from the 2011 Draft, but I have a question that should at least be considered. Since we are in the middle of a lockout, and the potential to lose part or all of a season is in question; should we consider trading picks away this year looking at next year?
HEAR ME OUT! AND NO THIS ISN'T CERRATO IN DISGUISE!
Any player that we draft this year is going to be at a disadvance because they will not be able to be coached until there is a new CBA. Even if the CBA is put in prior to the season, some experts are predicting anywhere between August and September...how good or coached are they going to be? It's definitely not much time to learn a system.
My question is, with all of the Redskins glaring needs, would it be wise to trade those first two picks this year for the opportunity for 3 first rounders next year? There are teams in the draft this year that are picking ahead of us that might be willing to trade away next years first and second for our #10. Our second round pick this year is easily worth a first next year. I am not familiar with the grading points on the trades, so maybe yall can help me out with that. Not only would having several picks in the first two rounds majorly help us out next year, but we would then be in the New England position where we could continue to add high picks by trading back for more picks. We could go a few years in a row with multiple 1st round picks which would most definitely bring in a youth movement.
My point here is that with rookies not being allowed to have contact with the coaches, no voluntary practices, no OTA's and no preseason, the rookies we do select this year are not going to have the impact as a rookie in next years draft. With a little luck of the trade, we could actually move our #10 this year to a top 5 next year (Andrew Luck territory). I do get that we would be playing with the same team as last year, but I feel like the offense will be better this year since it'll be in the second year of the system. The defense, i think the same thing will happen. Adding OJ definitely helped, with no free agency, there's a potential AH (if not suspended or in jail) might actually have to play as well. We were in almost all of the games this year, and feel like with the same roster, we might actually be able to go 8-8.
My proposal is flawed if the thought is that the Redskins will be contenders in 2011. If we're saying now that it will be about 3 years until we're making a run for the playoffs, then wouldn't it make sense? If anyone understands the point system for trade value, please help me out.
