Redskins Sign OJ Atogwe to 5 Year Deal

Photo

Update on jersey #: "With all due respect, I will not be rocking nor even asking to rock 21," Atogwe

Per Adam Schefter

Former Rams safety O.J. Atogwe reached agreement on a five-year deal with the Washington Redskins.

Atogwe, a Stanford grad will be 30 in June. He has started for the Rams at Free Safety the past five years and has only missed 4 games (all in 2009). This past year he had 3 interceptions, 64 solo tackles, and two forced fumbles.  In 2008 he was the Rams Team MVP, and he's familiar with Jim Haslett from his days in St. Louis.

Atogwe was the Rams defensive captain for the Rams and St. Louis reporter, Brian Stull, called him a "spiritual leader" in the locker room. Atogwe has also forced the third most amount of turnovers for defensive backs over the past 5 years, only Charles Woodson and Ed Reed have more.

The Redskins just barely beat the deadline to sign Atogwe.

Updated: The deal is worth $25.2 million base, $9 million guaranteed. ($6.5 mil leagues year bonus in 2011, 900k 2011 salary, $1.5 mil injury guarantee in 2012.

I don't think it'll be a giant contract

because they waited for him. I think that they left an offer on the table and he had no choice but to take it… considering the CBA is about to expire.

Not much of an accountant are you?

5.2mil per year for a 30 year old safety. If he only gets the guaranteed part then we have cut him and he probably made 12mil+ in about 2 years.

by Mr. E on Mar 3, 2011 6:24 PM EST up reply actions

That's not so bad.

Even if he walks after 2 seasons with 12 mil, it’s only 6 mil/year.

by TheDeepBall on Mar 3, 2011 8:35 PM EST up reply actions

Right

6 million times 22 starters is 132 million; so you have to pay some starters at critical positions less than average to afford the safety. So how much does Grossman pull down?

"What a gorgeous dog. What do you feed him?"

by waterfield on Mar 3, 2011 11:08 PM EST up reply actions

That's a good deal

I wanted to sign this guy last year. He’s definitely an upgrade to our roster and should compliment Landry well.

by tuckwell on Mar 3, 2011 5:48 PM EST up reply actions

if its true..

than im glad because it shows we are not overpaying players anymore

by ImFROMdc88 on Mar 3, 2011 5:49 PM EST up reply actions

You mean, after this deal? Like, starting… meow?

by Mr. E on Mar 3, 2011 6:22 PM EST up reply actions

It's $26million bra

If we cut him that means he was under-performing and got $12mil for 2 years of poor production. This dude isn’t 26/27 and non-QB/OL NFL players don’t age very well into their 30s.

by Mr. E on Mar 3, 2011 6:29 PM EST up reply actions

what are you talking about??

he doesnt get 26 million gauranteed, he probably wont see half of that money

by ImFROMdc88 on Mar 3, 2011 6:37 PM EST up reply actions

and when do players not reach incentives?

Unless he is injured or not performing he will see most of that.

by Mr. E on Mar 3, 2011 6:47 PM EST up reply actions

It's a fair contract......

we are getting the guy that is 3rd in the league at getting turnovers in the last 5 seasons behind only Charles Woodson and Ed Reed!!! Because he is 30, it will be a front loaded contract….and safety is a position that players can age gracefully.

Yet another offseason......another few months for the Skins to "shine".

by shvd98z24 on Mar 3, 2011 7:56 PM EST up reply actions

I don't know about that

The way Bruce Allen’s contracts have looked so far, the max number is always pretty deceiving. $12 mil guaranteed is a steal, plus our cap is looking great anyway thanks to the dead wood we cut. (Sorry Clinton, still luv u)

by Boo. on Mar 3, 2011 7:58 PM EST up reply actions

by FlaGators on Mar 3, 2011 6:02 PM EST reply actions

If the reports are right

and it is just $26 million and $12 mil guaranteed, then the Skins got a steal. Now we can worry about our front 7 and hopefully have a respectable defense! Fantastic value!

“Since becoming a full-time starter in 2006, Atogwe has 43 combined forced fumbles and interceptions _ the most in the NFL over that time.” That is a cool stat. Sounds like he will fit in perfectly to our new defense.

Great Sign

Every time our Front Office shows a little competence, I just get a tingling sensation. I just know the old regime would have jumped all over injury prone Bob Sanders. It didn’t happen, now everyone is happy.

by SylvesterofRio on Mar 3, 2011 6:52 PM EST reply actions

I like it. People may say it’s another big name, but he is good and this fills a major need of ours. Kareem Moore was never the answer at FS.

by rachel216 on Mar 3, 2011 6:53 PM EST reply actions

i actually think its a good signing

but my major concern is that the redskins are a building team, and they basically just got a guy who will only be productive in the short term.

Safety's have a great lifespan.

Many corners go to safety later in their careers because it extends their careers. He could be in the NFL for 10 more years. And he is a playmaker!! Think about all our turnovers, plus him. SUPER BOWL!!!

Huge fan of this signing

I was really hoping we’d get Atogwe, especially at a reasonable price. Now let’s hope the suits can agree on the new CBA so we actually get to watch Landry and Atogwe make plays this fall.

by Boo. on Mar 3, 2011 7:56 PM EST reply actions

It’ll happen. I’ll say by tomorrow they will have a “near deal” in place. And at the absolute worse, they’ll have a deal signed by the beginning of summer.

Just to throw it in there…I don’t even know why any of the pro-leagues even have “unions.” Never made much sense to me.

The Once and Future King

by FlaGators on Mar 3, 2011 8:23 PM EST up reply actions

I agree the whole process and media gloom and doom happens every 5 years when the CBA is up.

It was the same way in 2006 and they got a deal done by mid-March. Look at Schefter’s twiiter all he does is push discontent over and over, he never mentions the positives of an extension or anything.

I would think they have it hammered out the next couple weeks and by July at the very latest.

by Parks Smith on Mar 3, 2011 8:26 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly. It is such a joke. I don’t even consider it an issue at all. Anyone who thinks it is an issue at this point, is like that person who is scared to walk through the woods or stay in a “haunted” house, because they actually believe that crap in the horror movies. It’s ridiculous.

Fantastic News

I’m happy we got him, too bad he wasn’t a free agent 3 years ago Vinny and Danny Boy would of given him $75M with $85M guaranteed

by RibDawg on Mar 3, 2011 8:35 PM EST reply actions

Good deal for the Skins

Fills a glaring hole with a guy who is still performing at a generally high level. I think his best performing years were under Haslett so there is a good chance he will perform really well. Also allows Moore to play a backup role and get 100% healthy. This years draft is not a good safety class so I think overall this was a great pickup. Looking forward to getting a few more “team player” free agents!

by dwninit71 on Mar 3, 2011 8:52 PM EST reply actions

if he ends up performing ie 3 to 4 picks this year a forced fumble or two..

no one will even remember the money. The problem with skins free agents in the past is them NOT performing in skins uniform. If he performs all is good.

by ImFROMdc88 on Mar 3, 2011 9:20 PM EST reply actions

It also helps that for once

we signed a free agent without also giving them the biggest contract in history for whatever position. Those huge contracts create alot of pressure and expectations.

by CarverM on Mar 3, 2011 9:26 PM EST up reply actions

Let's see

February 19, 2009 Atogwe will receive a one-year tender of $6.342 million
In June 2010 he signed a 5-year contract worth $32 million with the Rams

5 years 26 million sounds about right, key is how is the contract really structured…

by dr WNC on Mar 4, 2011 1:02 AM EST up reply actions

Return on investment

The return on investment with free agents has been overall pretty below average over recent history with this team. They still have to perform on the field no matter what the cost.

by killianskid34 on Mar 3, 2011 10:09 PM EST up reply actions

recent history.....

you mean a Cerrato signing. I don’t think this compares in any way. The contract is reasonable, he has played, and played well, under Haslett before, Shanny has shown he is not going to let anyone loaf around anymore, and he actually fits a specific need for our team. I know its a lot take in at once, but this looks like a solid FA acquisition.

by MagicHat on Mar 4, 2011 7:31 AM EST up reply actions

I think it is reasonable to pop the kool-aid

and believe that for once the law of averages worked out and we got a good deal. The fact that he is a leader only helps this team more – and we do need more leadership out on the field. I also think he and Landry and Fletcher will hit it off and it will be a big influence on Orakpo. (at least that’s my plan.)

but I think it is a good quality signing, and will help immensely. Potentially the best safety tandem in the league, and, if we keep Carlos, a top tier secondary all the way around. It will be nice to have someone watching DHalls back.

but when you get a turnover, you get off of the field. Its not like he is going to make 2 turnovers on the same drive.

by CarverM on Mar 4, 2011 8:05 AM EST up reply actions

True.

I was just playing a bit of Devil’s advocate.
He was still the player out of 11 to make the play, and it shows he has the ability and awareness to do what Haslett’s been preaching the past year.

by SSBlitz on Mar 4, 2011 12:21 PM EST up reply actions

Given that miscommunication and missed assignments

in the backfield were probably our most glaring defensive fault last year, this is really encouraging. I think Shanny gets a few bonus points for this per the “Hows Shanny Doing” post.

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

by Scott E on Mar 4, 2011 10:47 AM EST reply actions

Bonus points all around....

I think Haslett had to have a lot to do with this, and big points to Allen for not jumping the gun and throwing mad cash at him because “we have to have this guy”

by MagicHat on Mar 4, 2011 11:01 AM EST up reply actions

Atogwe and Landry = YING YANG

I’ve read somewhere that Atogwe is a great leader in the locker room, not only emotionally, but also spiritually pumping up his defense. He was a captain last year, and that itself says a whole lot. Landry, on the other hand, is a smash-mouth safety. His tackling ability is as harsh as his pre-game trash talking. So here’s the equation:

Atogwe leads our defense and encourages teammates + Landry trash talking and getting into the heads of opposing teams = YING YANG

Holla if you hear me!
