Would you take Mallett?... In the second?

Some "experts" -- and by those, I mean some mock drafts done by amateurs and some professionals -- have Ryan Mallett slipping out of the first round altogether, due to concerns about his play on the field and his attitude off of it.

I think we all can agree that there isn't a convincing case to be made for the Redskins taking a quarterback (with the possible exception of Blaine Gibbert) at #10, but what if someone like Mallett (or Jake Locker) was available in the 2nd?

I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts on this, because I'm, frankly, not sure either way.

Mallett worth 2nd

Mallett is worth a 2nd rd pick in my opinion. But will he be worth it to the Skins? Not sure. Depends on who Shanny likes. I’m hearing Locker right now.

Rather take Ponder

or any other QB besides Locker

I’d be okay with the drafting of Ponder. Even though he is a ’Nole.

You could always root for the Gators!

The Aggies could very well (maybe/if the Big 12 folds) be on their way to joining the SEC West.

I have come around to the idea that we should use #10 on a D-lineman (like Taylor)

mainly because it seems likely that we can get our desired QB at 42 or lower or with a trade down slot. This is based on the guess that only one or two QBs will go in the first round, and those would be from Mallett, Newton or Gabbert, leaving us with one or two of those and Locker, Ponder and Kaepernick to pick from. That said, I’d be tempted if Mallett was still left at 10, and would certainly grab him at any place lower. Getting Shanahan a QB is still the highest priority, but reflects the hope that we can get our guy lower than #10. With all due deference to Tiller, I’m starting to lean toward Ponder over Locker (in the second round or lower). But it’s close.

I think Mallett will be there at 10.

He’s not worth a pick in the top 10 unless a team is really stupidly desperate for a QB, and guys like AJ Green, DaQuan Bowers, Von Miller, Patrick Peterson, Nick Fairley, Marcell Dareus, Robert Quinn, Julio Jones, are all better value picks than a project QB like Mallett that early.

Mallett maybe in the 2nd, but an immobile QB with a long release isn’t really an ideal Shanahan (Mike or Kyle) QB, so I think it’s a moot point. The Redskins aren’t drafting Mallett.

Hell No!

Mallet is a effin’ sitting duck in the pocket. I saw somebody compare him to Jeff George, I like that. He seems to be that way 2 me. I don’t like him at all.

Outta the QB’s left on the board in the second (according to Donnio1234 Locker, Ponder, and Kaepernick), I’m taking Kaepernick. I like his medium amount of athleticism, his accuracy, and his potential. He is thin as hell, but I still like him as a DC QB. Mallett just doesn’t fit the bill to me.

Kap is actually QUITE athletic

Possibly the most athletic QB in the draft, and yes I include Locker. Very high top end speed, but he’s shown good awareness in the pocket. My biggest concern with him is the learning curve in learning how to read defenses; he relied on a gimmick offense in college and never had to make NFL-level reads.

well

I wouldn’t say he’s a better athlete than Cam Newton, and his release is under a lot of scrutiny

We can pass on a QB...

With the tenth pick because if a Qb is not ready he will not make an impact right away. As far as getting the D-line help and maybe the O-line some help would make the Skins more competitive. Alot depends on how the CBA turns out and if the Skins use FA to fill holes the draft can`t fix. To be honest I am in a wait and see mode for now since WR may become an issue if Moss is not signed.

needs!!!!!

We have to many needs at alotta positions to be risk taking! Take this draft and get the sure fire blue collar guys weve been lacking for 10 years!!!!!!!Not the talented big heads…

I would be interested in Ponder in the 2nd round....

…..but with the 31st ranked defense in the league, I think Mel Keiper would cal us the new Oakland Raiders if we don’t go all defense this year in the draft….

There’s enough offensive free agent talent out there and Rex put points on the board when under center. IF WE HAD to take a QB in the 2nd round, I would hope it’s Ponder.

Does this sound like a guy you wanting running such a bootleg heavy offense?
His footwork has improved to a degree, but he’s still clumsy when navigating his way through pressure. Loses accuracy when leaving the pocket and on the move, even when throwing little bailout routes.

On the move, he has trouble coordinating short-to-intermediate timing routes (slants and crosses) to a really worrisome degree for a guy who’s about to don an NFL uniform. Padded his stats to a fairly decent extent with quick throws to wide-open receivers in the flat in Bobby Petrino’s wide-open shotgun offense. For a guy with an arm this big, Mallett lacks the ability to make repeatable stick throws downfield when he’s under pressure.

I am no fan of Mallet

but after hearing Chris Mortensons evaluation of him I would take him in the 2nd if we had not taken anyone in the 1st. I know that few if anyone on this site likes Cam Newton ( & I will try & shut up about him ) but IMO he will be an elite top five QB in the NFL

So he will put his personal integrity on the line

for the sake of hyping up a player from Arkansas?

Are you not entertained?

by Tiller56 on Feb 11, 2011 7:26 AM EST up reply actions

You don't think he has a little bit of an emotional tie there?

He’s always talking about Arkansas routinely. He hyped up Matt Jones more than anyone, and wouldn’t shut up about Felix and Run DMC that draft year. He’s also boys with ole Jurrah’.

You don’t think its funny that his son got signed by the Titans after completing six passes his whole career at Arkansas. And that his son transferred to Samford to only transfer back to Arkansas a season later?

Mallett

I don’t know what to think of this guy. The linked article, plus repeated, widespread doubts about his intelligence, give me great pause for thought. Above I said I’d think hard at #10, and definitely take him at 42, but I have to back away from that, at least pending the Combine and the Wonderlic, and definitely will trust Shanahan to decide. But as of now, with one exception, I’d wait until 42, and hope to get Locker, Ponder or Kaepernick. The possible exception, if Shanahan really wanted Locker and only Locker, and it looked as if he was likely to get taken before 42 (or other slots we got by trade), I’d be willing to pull the trigger at #10. If he’s the quarterback of the future, we can’t miss him.

Can we please hold off the QB evaluations until after Combine/Pro Days

To really be objective, especially for those who do not watch a lot of college football, just wait for a few weeks to see. Your opinion may change, it may not, but at least you will have something to base your opinion on, because obviously, for a lot of people, their on-field resume means nothing.

Are you not entertained?

by Tiller56 on Feb 11, 2011 7:29 AM EST reply actions

On field is almost all that matters

In a few cases, things like combine/pro days are useful to judge progress back from an injury, or whether a poor showing at a previous all-star event was due to unfamiliar WRs or something. Most times though, too many people get worked up about a great showing at the combine, and forget that you have anywhere from 1-4 years of evidence on the field of play to consider.

by tuckwell on Feb 11, 2011 11:42 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Most "Top" QBs won't even throw at the combine.

So you can’t really make a fair assessment from that either.

Dear Passionate fan, I know you are passionate, but please reply with a logical answer or I will ignore you.

by TerpsAllTheWay on Feb 11, 2011 12:33 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

I'm not even sure what this is supposed to mean.

On-field performance (not necessarily resume, because people look too much into a guy’s W-L record, but their actual “film” from games) and overall competition is more important for us to look at than their Combine or Pro-Days.

I don’t like Locker or Mallett as prospects based on what I’ve seen of them in games over their careers, playing against live competition. I’m not going to change my opinion when Locker runs a great 40 time or when they both look better throwing to scripted WRs in shorts and a t-shirt. And I can’t sit in on their interviews or chalkboard sessions with scouts so that doesn’t mean anything to me either.

So why would I hold off any evaluations until these events are over?
