Screw "Chicken Soup for the Soul". Redskins fans are getting a little OJ for the soul, as in a visit by OJ Atogwe to the Washington Redskins, today, Monday Feb. 21st 2011(which also happens to be Presidents Day).
We've talked about it in other posts, and voices on HH have made it known that an upgrade at FS is desired, but is this the right guy?
Lets get a little more in depth:
Atogwe, who will turn 30 this summer, signed a 5 yr, 32 mill contract with the Rams last summer. Prior to this, the Rams had used their franchise tag on him in 2009, guaranteeing him 6.432 mill for the season. His 2010 season ending with him being placed on IR due to a dislocated shoulder.
Atogwe is 5'11" and 203lbs. He was a 3rd round draft pick out of Stanford, where he was a 3 years starter at both SS and FS. He recorded a 4.58 40 yard dash and a 36inch vert. jump at the 2005 combine.
Since becoming a starter for the St. Louis Rams in 2006, Atogwe has recorded 338 tackles(an average of 68 per season). He has posted 22 int's and 16 FF in his career as a Ram.
The question is, why was he released, just one year removed from signing a new 5 year deal. Why did the Rams not attempt to trade him first?
There are some red flags surrounding him. We need to do some homework before we bring in a soon-to-be 30 year old FS with some obvious issues surrounding his skill and ability.
