Redskins 2012 Free Agents

The Redskins don't have many free agents this season (Moss, Rocky, Carlos, Grossman, McNabb - sorta), but 2012 is a HUGE year where 16 guys on our current roster are up for free agency. That's 30%!  Here they are in alphabetic order:

Josh Bidwell - (Was placed on IR. Due to make $1.5 mil in 2011. Please cut.)

Anthony Bryant - (NT played admirably at the end of the 2010 season. Due to make $640K in 2011).

Adam Carriker - (DE who turned it on the last few games for the Redskins. It's hard to believe he's only making $1.42 million next year - less than Bidwell).

Phillip Daniels - (Long time Redskin and Bear has a $1mil paycheck in 2011. I know he has Google Alerts set up to read his name in the news, so, "What up Big Phil?? Hope all is well in Chicago!").

Fred Davis - (The gifted TE for some reason does not see a lot of action. With this being the last year of his contract, the Redskins either need to trade him or start him). When Fred leaves, that essentially seals the 2008 draft as the Redskins worst one ever.

London Fletcher - (I really try to picture how bad our defense would have been the last few years without #59 and I cringe. Who is going to fill this guy's shoes? Like Ray Lewis, he has a Ford-tough motor. Will it extend past 2011?)

Star-divide

Graham Gano - (He's a restricted free agent)

Vonnie Holliday - (I really have nothing to say).

Chris Horton - (The injury-riddled Safety needs a solid and healthy 2011 season to not only stay a Redskin, but likely in the NFL).

Malcolm Kelly - (He's still on the team? 28 catches, 365 yards, 0 TDs in 3 seasons). Here's the only notable thing he's done as a Redskin.

Ma'ake Kemoeatu - (I think everyone knows how I feel about this Hawaiin. I'll have major problems if he's on the 53-man roster THIS season).

LaRon Landry - (Shanahan is in love with Landry and I'd be shocked if an extension is not completed before New Year's Eve of this year. The guy is a workout warrior who plays hurt, oh, and is a Pro-Bowler. Dirty Thirty is making $3.715 in 2011)

Kory Lichtensteiger - (The Left Guard is slated make $555K this year. Anyone's guess if he stays beyond that. Ample backup, but I'd hope we'll have upgraded at Guards by then).

The Rest: Will Montgomery, Kareem Moore, Big Mike Williams ($840K contract for 2011)

Interesting notes: Mike Sellers is on contract until 2015. (Vinny and Snyder gave him a 6-year $6.94 million contract in September of 2009. I guess $1 mil a year for a decent FB and 5-star special teamer isn't too bad).

This could be a very good thing.

Maybe players will be more worried about their jobs and playing hard.

Landry is the only guy I’m worried about locking up.

I'm torn on Fred Davis

we really need to see what the guy can do. If we were the Patriots, we’d trade Cooley for a pick this offseason and turn Davis loose.

I also really hope that Malcolm Kelly has fixed his injury problem while on IR and has been working hard. If he can come in and be productive, it will be like we signed or drafted a tall WR this offseaon. Its hard not to look at him on the field (in that highlight, at least. Haven’t seen him on the field much more than that) and dream about him playing the AJ role in the Shanny offense.

Very True, but no chance of happening

I think Davis is obviously younger and cheaper, but no way they trade Cooley not after the McNabb/Portis/Haynesworth Debacles this season.

Why not trade Davis?

No one talks about this, but if we like how Logan Paulsen is looking, why not look into trading Davis? Have Cooley hold down the fort for a more years while Paulsen grows.

i agree davis is a bust if shanny thought he was something cooley would be gone paulson looks like another greg olsen in the making .

+1

Can’t see us being successful for another 2-3 seasons.

Landry is the only keeper

Fletcher maybe at a small short term deal, but lets not break the bank. Carriker and Bryant could be solid backups, but they aren’t starters.

Kemo, Holiday and Daniels should be cut. this year- they just don’t bring enough to the table and this is a great FA/draft for 3-4 D-linemen.

I’d have no problem seeing Moore and or Horton gone as well. We need some new bodies at safety.

Kelly should come to camp, but i’d be shocked if he plays. Best case scenario is he shows he is healthy and maybe we can trade him for some team’s 54th player (a la Doug Dutch for Beck deal).

Monty and Licht- both should be in camp, but if they are both on next year’s roster (esp. starting it will be a long season).

Bidwell should be cut, and Gano should have some competition this season, and by no means around in 2012 if he isn’t performing.

Gano won’t perform. I’m calling it.

When it comes to the ’Skins…I put my college “rivalries” aside.

Holiday and Daniels were both good veteran presences, especially @ DE where nobody else really understood what the responsibilities are in the 3-4

I’d keep them as back ups & fill ins

I think the Skins can do better

No they aren’t too pricey, but I’d rather have young guys with potential, and mid-tier free agents. Someone like Gerrard Warren won’t cost too much, or Alan Branch. Both offer a lot more than Daniels or Holliday.

yeah, but the guys i mentioned know how to play the 3-4 and they are at least decent at it

I really think Branch will break out, and Warren was an unsung hero on that Pats line.

He is by default,

but he isn’t starting caliber. There are maybe one or two other 3-4 teams in this league he could start for (and if those teams draft how they are expected to draft, that becomes zero). He wouldn’t even be the primary backup on most 3-4 teams. Overall though he is a solid backup to have, and should get a good 30-40% of the defensive snaps (in particular on goaline plays and other short area runs).

I think this is a harsh evaluation of Carriker

He was much better than you give him credit for this past season, and I believe he will make you eat crow this coming season.

i agree...

Almost every player in the D said it took them 12 games to figure out the scheme. Every post-game before that players repeated that if one of the 11 players breaks down…the whole play fails…D was definitely improved late in the season.

I would also like to add

my cautious optimism about Bryant. He flashed studliness at the end of the season, but I don’t want to get ahead of myself.

by CarverM on Feb 18, 2011 10:56 AM EST up reply actions

yea...

He’s a solid player, but I question he has the durability to start all season. I’m stiff baffled to why the Redskins cut Howard Green.

The same reason the Jets cut him later - he's not very good

He did make a couple of plays for the Packers in the playoffs, but he was only in for them because of a number of injuries along the defensive line.

by d_c_guy on Feb 18, 2011 12:37 PM EST up reply actions

im not saying he'd be a starter

But seeing Vonnie Holliday and Phillip Daniels get a lot of snaps at NT was tough to watch.

When Green made that play in the Super Bowl

I just shook my head. Was he a starter, no, but the irony of him beating one Kemoeatu, all because he couldn’t beat out another was humbling haha

Does he deserve a job next season sure

A starting role, not so much. Carriker got manhandled for much of the season, and I have a hard time buying into some of the late season performances, against some weaker o-lines. I mean one of the best performances we had was against the Jags when we were playing mainly our 2nd and 3rd teamers. I mean some of those guys had just been signed off the street. I don’t think continuity had a lot to do with that performance. Could it be that perhaps the Jags didn’t bring their ‘A’ game?

The only three d-linemen I’d bring back are Carriker, Jarmon and Bryant…but by no means would I bank on any of them. Jarmon I like the most, but even he might not be a fit for this 3-4. I hope the Redskins look long and hard and bring in multiple 3-4 D-linemen. Guys like Gerrard Warren and Alan Branch would be great additions. I’d make a case for John Henderson as well for NT, he’s never really played it in a 3-4, but boy does he occupy blockers and is stout against the run. The Redskins also need to draft some young blood for the line as well.

by Steve Shoup on Feb 18, 2011 10:59 AM EST up reply actions

How many DL down linemen should the Team keep? Two deep or six? Some needed for rotation. Keeping Daniels and

Holliday does not much room for young blood. No one has mentioned Golston who did OK as a 4-3 DT, but was not adequate as a 3-4 DE. Jarmon needs to prove himself before September.

by Jefferson1935 on Feb 18, 2011 12:30 PM EST up reply actions

Ideally I'd say 7 is the number

Though since we don’t have any top starters I’d probably say 8, to help have a fresher rotation. Golston is a free agent I believe, but yeah he didn’t take well to the 3-4.

There was an interesting article on Pro Football focus the other day that mentioned that Jarmon deserved more snaps. Which I think we all saw some flashes from last season. I don’t think he has a starting job, but he does have the upside to be pretty good.

Ma’ake Kemoeatu, Bidwell and Graham Gano are all garbage and shouldn’t be on the team this year.
