I had a hard time falling asleep last night. I kept playing out scenerios in my head, that would help improve out team in 2012.
I put together a nice Offensive Line. I projected a re-signing of Fred Davis. I loved the way Helu has been performing recently, and I got excited at the prospect of him starting a full season for us. I saw a defense who played well this year, and will only get better as time goes by. I struggled with the QB situation, as I often do. It is hard for me to project which type of rookie I would like to draft, as all four of the top candidated possess different strengths, that could be viewed as assetts in our offense.
Here is what kept me up half the night:
Offensive Line - Will Kory L. come back 100% from his knee injury? I believe he was playing very well prior to the injury. If he does come back at 100%, is he still considered replacement level? Is Will Montgomery the answer at center? I believe no, but I could live with him if necessary. I've seen growth in TW, and I am beginning to feel comfortable with him. I also like what Hurt has been able to do as a rookie, but should we continue to try and develop him, or do we go for a big FA signing, and let him become a back-up? Is Chester a starter? I've see both good and bad, but the good seems to have outweighed the bad recently. Still, would I love to have Nicks or Grubbs in his place...........absolutely. I know I don't want a FA center. If anything I want a rookie who can develop. If he is good enough to start the season, so be it. If not, I hope he can sit a year and learn. And then there is RT. What are we going to do there? I see good Brown, and bad Brown. I don't know what we are going to get from game to game. I see him look solid in the run game, then a few plays later, he gets beat inside by a 230lb OLB. I hope we use a high pick on a offensive tackle. Sanders and Adcock(who has been playing LT recently) are my choices in the 2nd. Are either going to unseat Brown?
WR's and TE's - The receiving corps, aside from Davis, and since Hankerson went out with his injury, have been tough to watch yet again this year. It's hard to get excited over Gaffney, Anderson and Stallworth, and I hope we have the luxury of not having any of the three on the team next year(and I almost hate saying this about Gaffney, as he has been a consumate pro for us thise season). That would have to mean we made a nice FA signing like................drumroll.......Bowe, and our rookies from this year, Hankerson, Paul and even Robinson, really step it up in the offseason. I have no doubt Hank will, but the other two remain wild cards. Finally, I got excited thinking about another year of Fred Davis. He has been a beast, and poor off-field decisions aside, he is a game changer. He needs to be a part of our team moving forward.
QB - This needs to be the final piece of the puzzle to make everything else around this offense click. What QB will the Shanny's fall in love with? Will that guy be an early starter?. We have 4 top guys who could be avaliable in the draft, and each one brings something different to the table. Luck seems to have the entire package, but will require trading up. Will the Shanny's be willing to make a move? Barkley is cerebral,a great leader, a high character guy, came from a pro offense, and has all the intangibles. He is good, not great, in most of the main areas you look for in a QB, but next to Luck, he may be the most complete. Jones offers a great skill-set, combined with ideal size, and great on and off field leadership. He obviously has the best arm of all the prospects, but may be lacking in the mobility dept. Will the Shanny's see the value of one assett over the other? Then there is RG3; everyone's perfect prospect. He may lack ideal size, but he has all the intangibles. Good arm, accuracy, mobility, mechanics, leadership, and good football IQ. Two concerns remain with RG3: First, will he stay another year at Baylor, and second, will his pure spread, zone read offense, transulate to a pro system. I believe it will, but only time will tell. For me, choosing a QB in this draft class, is like going to a car dealership that sells Mercedes, Audi, Range Rover, and Porsche.
So this is what keeps me up at night. Please, help me to fall asleep.
