Daily Slop: Shanahan Confirms Grossman Will Start; London Fletcher Pro Bowl 1st Alternate

Hogs-haven---daily-slop-gfx_medium

Studs and Duds (defense): Redskins-Vikings | John Keim
Studs: LB London Fletcher. He blamed himself for the 67-yard run, saying he could have done a better job of forcing the play. But he was blocked from the get-go as the hole was big. There were a lot of mistakes on this play. In general, Fletcher’s impact did not result in any game-changing plays.
Duds: Cofield, Bowen, Kerrigan, Gomes

Redskins’ defense is improved, but it’s not there yet - WaPost
"You watch a couple teams that do run this type of scheme [and] you see they play fast," Haslett said. They make up for a lot of things because they know where they’re going and what they’re doing and they’ve been together for a while and they just fly around. That’s where we’ve got to get to." (Skins also produced 8 more turnovers last year)

Rex Grossman’s confidence ‘is at an all-time high’ - The Insider
When asked if there was any way that John Beck – who replaced Grossman as starter for three games -- would play at quarterback on Sunday, Shanahan said, only "if Rex gets hurt. We play to win. We’re going to play the best players."

London Fletcher Pro Bowl First alternate - The Insider
"Our record speaks for itself," Orakpo said. "We’re not going to get voted in. It’s something we have to address in the next year, try to win some games, get some more notoriety. …Three straight losing seasons and it’s kind of hard to get representation in there."

Jaiquawn Jarrett, a second-round pick in April, is expected to start for injured safety Kurt Coleman, and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie looks likely to start in place of an ailing Asante Samuel.

Redskins Park: Quotes - Mike Shanahan, Rex Grossman, Andy Reid, Jason Babin
Grossman on how much the Eagles’ defense has changed since their first matchup: "Not a lot. You can tell from watching tape that they’re better at what they’re doing. Not a lot different, they’re just more sound and you don’t see those huge plays that they were giving up in the run game and some in the pass game earlier in the season."

Mike Shanahan: Redskins’ 2011 season has dragged - The Insider - The Washington Post
"Any time you’re not winning, it’s pretty slow, especially when you’re not in the playoff hunt," Shanahan said. "I think if you look back, you look at the opportunities we had to close games out that we didn’t close. If you look at the Dallas games, you take a look at the New England game, you take a look at the Jets game. You can go through a number of scenarios, and you know how far you are to get into the next level."

The result is an offense that produces fewer points per game (18.5) than any unit Shanahan ran during his 14-year career in Denver.

I'm not sure of what to make of the second half improvement...

Next year, do you go with the guys who produced, or the guys who were supposed to produce next?

The way Helu and Royster have done over the last 5 games, I’m not so sure we bring in the recovering Hightower past training camp next year. Davis might have smoked his way off the team and while Cooley has been a staple of this offense for years, I’m not so sure his production would be much better than a middle round TE like Orson Charles or David Paulsen, ESPECIALLY for the contract. Trent is going to be with us, and I am a true believer that a solid LG is going to make the world of difference in Silverback’s performance and confidence.

Back to my point…we lose all of these guys to injuries and suspensions, and our young guys really stepped up. Do we go with what IS working, or what was SUPPOSED to work?

by ptowny on Dec 29, 2011 8:43 AM EST reply actions

i was thinking about that too

i think shanahan will go with who IS working…he always preaches that in his pressers, about we play the best player regardless of reputation, contract, or draft pick….but i do believe we should bring back hightower, he’s just a good all around back and the type of high character guy you want on your team

As for me, all I know is that I know nothing.

Helu and Royster are keepers.

They will be hell for the division over the next four or five years.

We have to bring Davis back. Trent is going nowhere and before his suspension was playing at an elite level.

I really want to see Kory back, he was playing very well before he was injured.

Hightower, meh, he would be the third running back on the depth chart.

I really think time is up on Sellers, Cooley, Landry and McIntosh.

I see it as more cushion for the pushin'

I think you have to with injury concerns. Helu can not carry a full load and make it through a full season. …I couldnt either ;-)

and hightower is a complete back. I think we are a better team with all three though 3rd and 1 situations make me a bit nervous

I dunno if

CC will be back, but I have heard multiple people say that his contract is not a problem at all. Frankly, if it were between the two, I’d bring him back over Davis at this point, then grab a tight end in the 4th round.

Where do they teach you to talk like this? In some Panama City "Sailor wanna hump-hump" bar, or is it getaway day and your last shot at his whiskey? Sell crazy someplace else, we're all stocked up here.

Heard anything on his health?

I know they were hoping to avoid the surgery, and if he get’s the surgery it is 50/50 that he ever plays again. I’m not super optimistic on him playing effectively for anyone.

Nope

Guess we’ll have to wait and see. But I’m betting if he DOES play again, it’ll be for us. Truthfully though, I wouldn’t mind if he retired. It’d be better than seeing him in another jersey. I’m tired of seeing “our guys” in other jerseys.
All that said, I still don’t think it’s foregone that they resign Davis. If anything, I would make the all incentives. The first one being a ‘stupidity clause’.

I'm excited about Robinson getting promoted and Johnson getting signed...

Hopefully, the coaches will realize we know what Banks can do, and give Robinson a shot at some real NFL time. I think he’s capable of being our KR and PR, while actually being able to man the slot when Moss hurts his shoulder doing the infamous football spin for EVERY first down he gets.

Stafon Johnson is a true leader and a great athlete…that whole weight room accident at USC really slowed down his career, but hopefully he can bounch back and show up to camp next season ready to earn a roster spot.

glad to hear samuels won't be playing sunday

that guy seems to always make plays against us….i really hope we just pound it up the middle against the eagles with their wide-9, instead of relying on our stretch plays and tosses…give darrell young a few runs up the gut and just keep feeding the ball to helu and royster (seems royster’s last name is the perfect nickname-combo for the RB tandem of helu and him: ROYster)….

also if the rumors are true that spags will be the new eagles d-coordinator if he’s fired, that’s going to be a hell of a pick up for them….their defensive will get back to their jim johnson ways

As for me, all I know is that I know nothing.

that was a classy article by rogers. and an interesting comment about bringing in players all the time is a distraction

My favorite part is where he doesn't mention he got his %$$#%$# eyes checked

Actually being able to see when you are a professional CB makes a world of difference huh?

by willster on Dec 29, 2011 11:23 AM EST up reply actions

I don't know how this isn't part of the team physical

for every player, every year. They checked our eyes every year in elementary school, but a professional football team doesn’t do it? This is more on the team than the player.

This is 100% on the team,

most people can’t tell if they can see or not because of the gradual decline and just adjust and live with it, the team should put an emphasis on this!

I wonder what would happen

If we offered Carlos a contract next year. I mean, more than anyone else. I know it ain’t gonna happen, just purely speculatory. I wonder if he would suddenly remember everything he liked about DC.

oh, I realize that

He didn’t wanna be here anymore than Champ Bailey did. I was just implying that maybe the money would revise history for him.
