A Case For Gaffney?

When the Redskins traded Jeremy Jarmon for Jabar Gaffney before the season I sighed and said, typical silly move by the Redskins. I was wrong. Gaffney, while he will never be a great receiver, has been the Redskins most consistent and best receiver this season. However, in our quest to upgrade or receiving core for next year most have written Gaffney off as the odd man out or moved him down the depth chart behind Moss, Hankerson, and a FA signing. I wonder…Would it be worth keeping him over Moss? Do we have room for both? What would be the ramifications if we let go of Moss instead of Gaffney to the cap? Are we really loosing production and leadership by going with Gaffney instead of Moss?

I personally have no problem letting either one go

and moving on with a revamped WR corp in 2012.

I still would like to see a FA signing, like Bowe or Colston(or hell, even D Jackson – although I think he is an ass), to go along with our young guys like Hankerson, Paul, Austin, Robinson and I guess even AA(although I have little faith in him). Add a WR in the draft(maybe a 3rd or 4th round pick), and I like the way we could possibly look.

My philosophy is out with the old, in with the new. Although vets are needed on every team, I would rather go with younger, big-play types, than the older, less dynamic ones.

a little over the top there....

Moss still has years in him, but i’m not afraid to let him go
Gaffney has been the most consistent receiver this year….i would resign em’
hankerson > but only b/c of potential
i haven’t seen anything i liked out of paul, austin, or robinson this year. they’re young, but the point is i’ve seen no production

our wr core is a big (?) on this team

I just don't like these posts at the end of seasons, if you always thought these guys were crap and wanted to get younger from the start of the season that's a different story

And you haven’t seen production from Paul Austin or Robinson because they aren’t getting playing time so washouts like gaffney, stallworth, and David Anderson can play

In terms of financial impact

we’d eat over $4.3 million against the Skins cap next year if we cut/traded Moss, compared to just over $4.8 million if we kept him.

Gaffney on the other hand saves us $2.6 million (no dead cap) if we cut or trade him. While I like Gaffney, I’d def. try to deal him for a late round pick, instead of trying to move Moss.

Moss stays (3 YR contract) and Gaffney leaves.

All 4 wins this season have come with Moss in the lineup.

It’s not like Gaffney will fetch a high contract elsewhere. Re-sign him for low…and have him push the young guys. If he’s better, than keep him. We need quality WRs through the OTAs and camp so we can evaluate the QBs.

well Gaffney is under contract for next year, and i doubt they could do better than the $2.6 million he is scheduled to make

while I agree keeping him wouldn’t hurt, you might be able to pick up a late round pick (and save $2.6 million) for a guy who won’t be here in 2013. It is something they should at least consider

I thought he was a FA. Then he'll be back and most likey make the roster.

It’s unfortunate that we don’t have a bunch of young guys pushing these vets out the door..

gotcha, my bad

he’ll be back, but I do think they could look to deal him to free up more chances for young guys.
