2012 Free Agents the Redskins Could Target - Offense

We have spent countless hours debating who, and what positions the Redskins should focus on in the 2012 NFL Draft, but unlike the debacle last year, this year will again return to the normal format of free agency occurring before the draft.  For a team like the Redskins, this is very important, as it can help us fill some holes, and narrow down what positions and players we should target in the 2012 Draft.

Below is a look at some key free agents at various positions of need on offense who I feel can help this team in the rebuild.

Please remember, this list can change as re-worked contracts, and the franchise tag will come into play for many.  The ages represent how old they will be come the start of the 2012 NFL season.

Star-divide

QB - This is out number one position of need going into the offseason.  My hope is that out future signal caller will come from the draft, but we still need competent back-ups, and as of right now, I don't see any on our current roster.

Matt FlynnPackers 27

Chad Henne - Dolphins 27

Kyle Orton - Broncos  29

Brian Hoyer - Pats 27 (Restricted FA)

Brady Quinn - Broncos 28

OL - This is an area of major importance, and how we address this during the off-season can go a long way in determining our success in 2012.  We need to be smart and aggressive come FA.

G's/C's

Carl Nicks - Saints   27

Ben Grubbs - Ravens   28

Nick Hardwick - Chargers   30

Chris Myers - Texans   31

Scott Wells - Packers   31

OT's

Robert Turner - Jets   28

Demetrius Bell - Bills   28

Anthony Collins - Bengals   27

King Dunlap - Eagles   27

Oniel Cousins - Browns   28

WR - The Redskins need a go-to guy at the WR spot.  My hope is that Hankerson, or Paul can emerge as that guy, but there are some nice options on the FA market if the staff feels the current Skins are not up to the challenge.

Dwayne Bowe - Chiefs   27

DeSean Jackson - Eagles   25

Marques Colston - Saints   29

Steve Johnson - Bills   26

Robert Meachem - Saints   28

Mario Manningham - Giants   26

Early Doucet - Cards   27

Harry Douglas - Falcons   28

Maurice Stovall - Lions   27

Pierre Garcon - Colts   26

Bowe is going to be a tough one to land

but stranger things have happened. He could simply want big money, that the Chiefs are not willing to give, but my guess is that he could be the target of a franchise tag at the least.

"He could simply want big money"

I think this is the opposite of what we want. If we land a big FA wideout, I want it to be a player who is sick of losing somewhere else, has a chip on their shoulder, and believes that the Redskins have momentum moving forward and wants to help us become a contender.

They free agent who wants to get paid can accomplish that goal elsewhere

The last thing I want for our, hopefully, young QB is a diva WR...

I wouldn’t mind signing Harry Douglas, I’ve always been a big fan. Honestly I’d stay set with what we have. I don’t see us spending money on a big name WR. Who knows if we were actually in the running for Holmes last year. And we obviously just let Edwards go to SF.

We have to remember that Santana isn’t going anywhere. Austin, Hank, Paul, and Gaffney will all still be here. Armstrong is still under contract for cheap until 2012. And we still have Robinson on the PS. I’d be content with drafting a big possession WR like Quick or Summers in the 5th-7th, and maybe adding a guy like Harry Douglas.

isn't it ironic...

the first mention of FA is WR. I thought OL was our MOST IMPORTANT POSITION IN NEED!

Given the list of available talent @ C/G/OT, I wouldn’t be quick to drop a lot of coin on any of them either. It probably be through the draft that we will care for our OL needs.

And let me guess

you also feel we have more pressing needs in the draft, so I’ll assume you would pass on a WR in the first two rounds as well.

I think we need on big go-to guy, to go along with the rest of the pedestrian WR’s we already have. It could make a world of difference for a young QB.

Don’t believe me……………just ask Sam Bradford. Oh wait, I forgot, he has none either.

Absolutely, a big time WR wouldn't do much on this squad when our QB is eating turf...
you also feel we have more pressing needs in the draft, so I’ll assume you would pass on a WR in the first two rounds as well.

WRs have a tremendous bust rate also. Like I said I’d stick to what we have and go for a possession red zone guy like Quick or Summers late. I’d maybe consider a guy like Dwight Jones, TY Hilton, or Kendall Wright if they are still sitting around in the 4th.

But

Bowe is the ultimate Red Zone guy. He is a freakin monster near the goaline. I’d consider him to be one of the best red zone threats at WR in the NFL right now.

It’s not like we over-spent last year in FA. Making one big splash, for a team hurting in so many ways on offense, won’t kill us.

If we addresses LG and WR with big names in free agency...

draft a QB and two T/G/C in the first three rounds, we could use the rest of the draft for depth (and maybe a starting K). This team would have a whole new identity

If I remember correctly he has only really missed one kick. The rest have been blocked… more on the line than the kicker.

oops...

i meant consistancy IS somthing he has improved on…

by ptowny on Nov 4, 2011 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

That's super, but I'm not willing to pay that right now.

Also Bowe has never had a big contract so who knows how he’ll react. I’m fine with our WRs…

If we have the luxury of taking someone in 2013 then that would be great. I’d be more than happy to reunite Woods and Barkley.

I think a young QB needs to establish their territory and grow with the guys we have, then try to make a splash with a “playmaker”

He'll hit the open market, I wouldn't be surprised if Pioli stuck w/ Breaston/Baldwin

Bowe is going to look to get paid. The Chiefs also have a slew of other starters they’ll have to re-sign or replace

Nicks and Grubbs are the two linemen I would want most

Either one instantly upgrades our line.

I also think Anthony Collins from the Bengals has some nice upside as an OT. prob more of a depth signing than an immediate starter, but we do need depth as well.

I would also love to pluck Manningham from the Giants, as I think he can be a great #2 here. Doucet would be my 2nd choice at WR. I’d be in favor of getting rid of both Stallworth and Gaffney.

I'd actually favor Grubbs overr Nicks

as I think he moves a little better in tight spaces. Nicks is a mauler(although he has good feet for a man his size)

Nicks reminds me of a Dallas type of linemen

But I agree, I take him any day of the week. What also scares me is that Licht and Monty are both FA’s. My wish would be to let one of the two walk, and replace them with some better talent.

I’m a Licht fan, but the injury will dictate what will happen with him.

I actually disagree with Tiller and Parks

i could see a couple teams being willing to part with a 7th rounder for him. He’s cheap, he’s relatively productive and it means that teams don’t have to spend big money or a 2nd-4th rounder on a WR.

You won’t get more than a 7th, but I’d def. do it.

yeah I could see a team like the Colts

who have a TON of needs this offseason, and might not want to break the bank on a WR. If Manning is back, then great Gaffney is an All-pro, but if it is a rookie QB then at least he has a capable veteran to help him.

Jags are another team, they are a lock to grab a WR in the first round, but they have nothing across from him, so instead of signing a big name or another high pick, they get a decent receiver for Gabbert.

Obviously i see a few other teams like that as well. No guarantees but I think he could be dealt, def.

The fact that I actually watch FCS football gives me the ability to evaluate them. Not blindly shoot them down and make fun of them and me, like you’ve been doing.

If I someone writes about a prospect I haven’t heard on here then I try to make an effort to see them, not blindly criticize them. I’d suggest you actually watch some of these FCS guys like Brian Quick rather then making fun of them and refusing to recognize them as actual prospects.

I didn't critize

I agree there are some great prospects who play in lower divisions of football.

You seemed to jump at the opportunity to critize Stovall. I added him to the list because he’s young, and has intriguing size.

I can criticize Stovall b/c I've actually seen the dude play.

He’s not good, I’ve seen him for six years now. He’s failed to even get 150 receiving yards in four of his five complete seasons, and I doubt he does it again this year. He also has 3 career TDs, translation: he stinks.

Steve there was an article in the Richmond paper yesterday about...

Aaron Corp being a serious NFL prospect. I almost spit out my coffee on my work desk.

haha

yeah he’s not having the best of seasons to make me believe that is the case. Now had the article come out in August before the season i’d believe it, since he was a top recruit with good size and a decent arm, but now not so much.

I get what you're saying with this list....BUT

that is a short list considering it goes back 3-4 years and consists of close to 300 picks.

Also, in 2 years, shanahan has had ten picks in the 6th and 7th round combined and we currently have 5 on the active roster. While the guys below have shown some promise and the ability to be good backups in this leauge
, i doubt any of these guys are going to be consistant starters
Austin
Cook
Nield
Hurt
White

by ptowny on Nov 4, 2011 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know......

Other than Cook I think there are some possibilities there, especially for Markus White

by ENsDad27 on Nov 4, 2011 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions

sure those are the cream of the crop, but the point is they aren't all wasteful picks

and some do take years to develop. For instance Colston was a stud right away, but Steve Johnson took a couple years.

I also think part of the problem is we might reach too much. I don’t want to knock them entirely but Morris, Cook and Austin were considered more of UDFA type of players, now Austin might have worked out, but the point is we were reaching, and even this past year with Hurt it was the same sort of thing. Some might turn out, but the Redskins need to do a better job scouting these guys and finding more stars, consistent starters, significant contributors, star special teamers etc. in the late rounds, b/c that is what the good teams do.

I would

Send out Redskins as soon as free agency starts to bring Carl Nicks back here. He’ll, and send the yacht. I know we’re trying to get away from the old “big splash/Black Friday” mentality, but this is different. If we can get a Pro Bowl-caliber guard, in his prime, we need to jump all over it..

I would throw a lot of money at either Nicks or Grubbs

It gives us many more options with our first 3 picks in the draft if we could land one of these two.

John Denver was a musical genius

by Tiller56 on Nov 4, 2011 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions

Here is what we do on O

Sign Orton to a three year contract. Sign Nicks. Sign Collins. No WR is signed except maybe a depth guy. We take out top 5-10 pick and trade back for more picks. We take Tannehill late in the first and he sits behind Orton for about two years. Boom. Done.

Also is it just me or would Harry Douglas be the best porn name?

by 64ShagginWagon on Nov 4, 2011 11:45 AM EDT reply actions

not bad

my only concern is Orton might want too much (he made $8 million this year). I wouldn’t be opposed to adding a receiver if we have the money, but probably not a guy like Bowe who will be too pricey. Maybe a Doucet type.

Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com

by Steve Shoup on Nov 4, 2011 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm on board with Doucet

also Manningham.

John Denver was a musical genius

by Tiller56 on Nov 4, 2011 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah I don't mind Manningham either

I just don’t want to break the bank on a WR this year. QB and O-line are more important, and should be the focus of the money and resources. Adding a guy like Doucet is a good compromise move. It improves our receiving corps, but it doesn’t preclude our young guys from getting a chance, and it doesn’t take away from our top goals.

I disagree

but it doesn’t preclude our young guys from getting a chance

Moss, Gaffney, AA, and even Stallworth have been thrown to more than our young guys this year. What would preclude the same thing from happening next year?

But how big is Orton's market going to be

Doesn’t seem like there will be alot of starting opportunities for QBs next year. I think signing another WR is just going to hurt our young guys development. I would also stay away from all offensive linemen 28. I think that is the antithisis of what this organization needs.

by 64ShagginWagon on Nov 4, 2011 12:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Thats the thing

Most teams want “their guy”, instead of someone elses “has been” at QB. The opportunities will be limited for the FA Qb’s in 2012, so money might not be as big of an issue as we may think.

I’ll gladly take Henne as a backup.

John Denver was a musical genius

by Tiller56 on Nov 4, 2011 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Hasselbeck still got $7 million a year and Vince Young about $6 million (for only one year)

and that was in a small FA market, where teams might not have been as comfortable shelling out money for guys to ‘learn the system’

orton has no market

i mean how can he?? he got sent out of town by rex grossmen and now tim tebow… ied rather get matt flynn then orton.

Flynn will be available, but I’d be shocked if Wells even entertained other offers. He should be back in GB.

I would go after Carl Nicks & do whatever it takes to make him a Redskin

He is one of if not the best Guard in the NFL. He is big but is still athletic enough to play in a ZBS. He could play RT if needed, with what we are paying Jamal Brown it would be close to an even trade & well worth it for the Skins.

just wish

shanahan give up a 2nd rounder on matt flynn instead of mcnabb. think we would be in so much better shape going into next season. hell we might not even need a new qb right now and coulda used first 3 on o-line or a good cb. maybe we will still get flynn ? how old is he? maybe get him in FA then trade back and grab a bunch of picks out of the deal. i do think the presure will be on shanahan and crew to win next season so i look for him to make alot of moves this offseason… im already looking forward to it more then any other year i can remember

Flynn could come in and be a starter

so it will be interesting to see if we persue him.

Just a question, but does anyone else feel Grossman’s career in the NFL may be over?
