Top 5 Attributes you Look for in a QB

We spend so much time debating who would be the best fit in DC, and what positions we need, and where we need them. I wanted to do an exercise around the QB position, that may help us pinpoint what type of passer will pass your test as a fan.

I'll ask you to rate the top 5 attributes you would like your QB to possess(1 being the most). We can then take a look at the potentil rookies and FA who could be avaliable in 2012, and match the QB to your liking.

Here are some catagoires for your assistance:

Accuracy

Mobility

Arm Strength

Leadership

Performance in the clutch

Winner

Size

Speed

Decision making

Football IQ

Mechanics

pocket presence

Played at a big program

Being in a pro style system

Imporvement year to year

Attitude

Once you make your list of 5, I will try to match you with your perfect QB, both a college rookie, and a avaliable FA.

You can just use my first five to score if you’ve got all the QBs rated, but I figured it’d be worthwhile to extend my list. A lot depends on how you define the terms (especially “attitude” and “football IQ”). Attitude was tough to place. I don’t need Tebow, but he’s gotta be better than Leaf. The first three are what’s really important, and then he just needs to not suck in the rest of the categories.

I like his arm too

but out of curiosity, have you seen the arc(Rainbow), he puts on his deep ball. I like some arc, so the WR can run under the ball, but too much will allow a safety in the NFL room to come over and break up the pass.

He does have a good arm, and he certainly has the zip, but not quite to the extent of Jones, who IMO is a tad under Ryan Mallett.

Here are my QB requirements. Please match me with my perfect QB

1.) High football intelligence – My QB must be able to read a defense both pre, and post snap. Moreover, he must be able to make good decisions with the football, and audible into different plays when the defense didcates it. Intelligence can be improved upon by film study and preperation, so my QB must be willing to put the time in to constantly improve in this area.

2.) Arm Strength – All the other stuff is great, but I need my QB to be able to execute, and being able to make every NFL throw without limitations is vital. Windows of opportunity, and how open a WR is in the NFL is a lot different than in college. I need a guy who can fit the ball into a tight window, or throw a deep ball to a WR who has a step on a d-back. This can’t be taught, so I need my QB to have this.

3.) Accuracy – I need a guy who can place the ball in the right spot, not only when it comes to throwing a WR open, but also when he’s putting the ball on a WR or RB to maximize RAC. It’s also important that he be accurate when throwing the deep ball, as he’ll often have a very small window to place a ball over the CB, but before the safety. My guy can have all the arm strength in the world, but if he can’t hit the broad side of a barn, it does me no good.

4.) Pocket Presence – I don’t need a QB who can rush for 100 yards a game; that’s why we have running backs. I just want a guy who has good pocket presence. My guy should be able to escape your typical 330lb D-linemen, and it is imparitive my guy can step up, our outside the pocket to elude the rush. It’s also important that my guy be able to break the pocket on play-action, and has the ability to throw on the move.

5.) Size/strength – I want a QB who can see over the damn LOS. My QB should have size and strength, as I know he will be taking some hits, and he needs to be able to bounce back up, and keep fighting. I also want a guy who’s not afraid to step up into the pocket, and deliver a good ball in the face of a rush. If he can’t see over his linemen, or he’s afraid to take a good pop, he’s not the guy for me.

6.) Attitude/leadership – I put these two together because I believe they go hand-in hand. My guy needs to be a leader on the field and in the locker room. Having theright attituide(one that is positive) will help my guy earn the respect of the guys around him. A QB needs to believe in himself and those around him, and the attitude he portrays has a lot to do with this. If the attitude is right, and the guys believe in you, leadship comes easy.

College QB - Landry Jones

Foles has no pocket presence.

Redskins @LandryJones - 2012

by Copious 1 on Dec 1, 2011 12:00 PM EST up reply actions

are you kidding?

Foles throws from the pocket constantly…Arizona played 5 straight top 20 teams at one point this year, so you know the pressure was there, and he took plenty of hits delivering from the pocket. He’s about 6-6, but just because he doesn’t run like Cam Newton doesn’t mean he doesn’t evade rushers or even step outside and throw on the run. I’ve been following him pretty close this year, and he while he does take too many sacks, lots of the pass rushers are uncontested. Mike Vick couldn’t escape some of those sacks.

by ptowny on Dec 1, 2011 12:25 PM EST up reply actions

His biggest problem is his foot work and part of pocket presence is being able to sense the rush.

While his line may be partially responsible, he holds a lot of culpability for those sacks IMO.

Redskins @LandryJones - 2012

by Copious 1 on Dec 1, 2011 1:06 PM EST up reply actions

i don't know if I'd agree with that

none of the top college (Luck, Barkley, Griffin, Jones, Tannehill, Cousins, Weeden, Moore etc.) guys have a line half as bad as the one Foles is throwing behind. All of those guys also have more weapons and a running game.

Foles def. won’t run away from sacks, and he’ll have to work on getting rid of the ball quicker (but even guys like Luck and Barkley will need to do that since they will no longer have the same protection), but overall I’ve liked what he’s done. Esp. considering the coaching change.

He’s a late 2nd (more based on need) to early 3rd round guy for me. I don’t know if he’s a great fit for the system, but I do like him and think he’s got some nice upside.

Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com

Foles’ is big problem is he locks onto one reciever. I have really noticed this during games, and for me to pick up on these types of thins means it is a glaring problem. But I love his size and he has a cannon

it's not the sole reason (part of the fact with Foles could be the difference between Criner and any other receiver)

but the lack of progression is an issue for a number of college QB’s. Though sometimes it doesn’t matter a ton as that was a question mark against Newton.

Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com

by Steve Shoup on Dec 1, 2011 8:57 PM EST up reply actions

I would disagree with the cannon part.

For an NFL QB, I’d say he has average arm strength at best. Below RG3 and Jones. Below Luck. Maybe just a touch below Barkley, but somewhere in there.

My arbitrary system will be to weight your first choice as 1, second choice as .9, third as .8, etc. I won’t be grading Landry Jones since I don’t feel I’ve seen enough of him to form a good opinion. And I’m only doing the other top 3 college guys, because FA stop gaps bore me in comparison.

Grades, with categories listed in the order you ranked them:

Luck – 10, 8, 10, 10, 9, 10 – Total: 42.6
Griffin – 8.5, 10, 9, 10, 5, 10 – Total: 39.7
Barkley – 8.5, 7.5, 8, 8, 7, 10 – Total: 36.5

I wouldn’t say those guys are quite at those football intelligence scores yet, but that’s where I’d predict that they end up—kind of a hard prediction, but I feel pretty damn sure about Luck. In any case, I’d say all three have at least “good” football IQ/decision-making (or capacity for it). Love the 10s across the board for attitude as well.

My list:

1. Accuracy- top priority for me as the windows get a lot smaller at the NFL level. It’s more than just completion percentage as it involves hitting a receiver in stride and on the numbers.

2.Decision Making/Football IQ- I don’t really see these as separate categories. There are some minor differences depending on how you define it, but the way I look at it is, they are both essential for a QB.

3. Pocket Presence- I want a guy who can step up or slide in the pocket to buy some time for his receiver. While the ‘buying time’ is part of it, the biggest key here is keeping his eyes down the field. If he is looking at where the rush is, he’ll miss the open receiver or the safety looking to jump the route.

4. Mechanics- Look it doesn’t have to be cookie cutter or textbook, as we’ve seen guys like Phillip Rivers succeed with on paper ‘horrible mechanics’, but it has to be functional. Tim Tebow’s elongated throwing motion makes him a risk to try to throw the ball even 25 times a game, much less 35-45 times like in some high powered offenses. The two main areas here are throwing motion and footwork.

5. Arm Strength- Now the easiest definition for arm strength is distance, and that is part of it. But functional arm strength is more about the precision of the deep ball, and the velocity (and the ability to take something off) of the throw. Jason Campbell could throw the ball 60-65 yards in the air, but he didn’t have great velocity which led to some ‘rainbow’ throws. Those might work in college, but in the NFL DB’s will surely knock those down or pick them off. Donovan McNabb has the velocity (not the accuracy), but he’s also not good about taking something off his throws when he needs too. Personally I’d rather my quarterback have the functional armstrength to hit all the 25-40 yard throws, even if his ‘deep ball’ isn’t the best. You aren’t going to throw 50-60 yard bombs nearly as often, and even in the best circumstances (great receiver, single coverage, top arm strength) they aren’t a ‘high percentage throw’.

6. Leadership: I want my quarterback to be the leader on and off the field. I want him to be able to control his receivers and other offensive players and be an extension of the coaching staff on the field. I also put attitude in this category, as some very good quarterbacks (Rivers even Cutler somewhat) don’t have a great attitude and it shows when things start breaking down.

Shanny specific traits: These aren’t important to me in general, but for what the Redskins are looking for they do matter.

Pro style System: Shanny needs a guy who is going to fit a WCO, and coming from a pro style system is definitely a leg up in that department.

Mobility/speed- Shanny’s system has a number of rollouts, boot legs built in, and with a poor offensive line Mobility is key. Also being able to run for some first downs and keep the chains moving is highly beneficial as well.

i think of pocket presence as also relating to size

the big qb’s who stand tall in the pocket potentially see the field more easily than the 6’2" and under crowd. Peyton’s turkey neck is one example.

as far as arm strength, even though you dont need to throw the ball 65yards in the air that often, the guys who can generally have tremendous zip on their outs which is highly critical. “Make all the throws” is a common term but it’s a bit ambiguous…how fast the ball gets from qb to receiver is usually the difference between a college level arm and an nfl arm
