If my observation is correct, there are typically a total of 8 OL on a 53 man roster. That does not necessarily mean that they are all good. a Clearly the Redskins need to upgrade their offensive line, but at most, they will only carry a total of 10 (8 on the 53 man roster and 2 on the practice squad). [Don't get caught up on the accuracy of the numbers, they may be off, but that's not the main point]. The list of free agent OL that I think may be good fits and could be targets of the Redskins below:
Ben Grubbs - G - 27
Carl Nicks - G - 26
Jeremy Zuttah - G/C - 25
The current roster (not counting the practice squad, but including IR):
Corey Lichtensteiger
Willie Smith
Erik Cook
Chris Chester
Trent Williams
Jamal Brown
Tyler Polumbus
Will Montgomery
Maurice Hurt
Sean Locklear
So...for the sake of argument, let's say the Redskins sign 2 of the above mentioned OL and 2 draft picks (which I believe is all that will be needed if two FA's are picked up). That leaves 6 linemen need to fill out the roster and practice squad (refer back to the math estimates above). Who's getting cut? (Let's also assume that Jamal Brown is going nowhere based on this unfortunate contract and that Chester and TW are going nowhere). I'm asking because I've seen suggestions regarding using 8 picks on OL or 4 picks on OL, which I wholeheartedly disagree with because FA is a better immediate option in order to fill other positions of need int he draft. No way you can draft a QB and not get him some young skill players (aka weapons). There are also needs at NT, MLB, S, and DB.
