Upcoming FA WR's
More off season fun for everyone. I know the season is still in effect, but our post season chances are already flat lined for the most part. Thought I would see what HH folks think of the possibilities. I don't imagine any of the wanting to come here without the guarantee of a QB being drafted. In addition, they all are on teams that will be in the playoffs, so the Redskins will most likely have to win it with the money in the contract and a great sales pitch IMO. If we assume that all of these guys will make it past franchise tags and new contracts with their current teams AND they are all willing to come here (remember...we are assuming), who would you want?
FYI - there are more FA WR's who will be available, but these are the cram of the crop. I figured we wouldn't want to have a 2nd go-round with Devin Thomas and Malcom Kelly. LMBO!!!
Wes Welker – NE
Marques Colston - NO
Robert Meachem – NO
Mario Manningham - NYG
DeSean Jackson – PHI
Mike Wallace – PIT (R)
Vincent Jackson – SD
Ted Ginn Jr – SF

I'm going with Colston.
Dear Passionate fan, I know you are passionate, but please reply with a logical answer or I will ignore you.

Hasn’t he broken something every year he’s been in the league (and I dont mean records)

he has been injured some but he's played in 10 or more games every season
and has 70 or more receptions in 4 of his 5 previous seasons (and should this year as well).
Honestly I’d take him over anyone on this list (I love Mike Wallace but I’m not paying a 1st and a 3rd for him).

everyone on that list has a great QB throwing to him
(except Ginn, but he shouldn’t be on the list) Now Dwayne Bowe overall is an exception, but I’d still take Colston.

I voted for Welker
I assume that the “big receiver” role will be filled by the emergence of Hank and Niles Paul next year.

I would have said V Jackson......up until last week.
so I chose Welker
Just say NO! to Rex Grossman.
we can grab 2
definately will grab D. Jackson and V jackson

why would you grab two and blow all your FA money on WR's

We would find a way to give andy reid draft picks for jackson
the first sign-and-trade in the NFL

will they really command that much money?
i think not. D. Jax has played himself out of a big contract…..because everybody around him got paid but himself……
this is where bruce makes his money…..good contracts 2 both
by back_to_the_future on Nov 18, 2011 1:07 PM EST up reply actions
they are both going to get money that rivals Santonio Holmes and Sidney Rice
i.e. $8-9 million a year for 5 years

Isn't Dwayne Bowe a FA as well?
I’d take him over anyone here if I’m looking for an outright number 1 WR.
Follow me on Twitter: @UkRedskin1 feel free to give suggestions on what you'd like to see broken down each week.
yeah he is
I’d still probably take Colston. Even though Colston is a few years older, he’d probably come cheaper, and has less baggage.

d jack would be good but.......
everyone will say no to d jack, i want a speed/deep threat guy. so if not d jack. i’d take mike wallace.
Mike Wallace is a restricted free agent so he's not available

by Steve Shoup on Nov 18, 2011 11:12 AM EST up reply actions
Welker is the only one
and he won’t be available, I’d rather just stick with our guys or maybe mike wallace for the deep threat but he’ll probably be too expensive.
what we need more than anything is a big, physical WR with sure hands
a la Hakeem Nicks, Calvin Johnson, Fitz, Brandon Marshall (not the surest of hands), Dez Bryant, etc.
Vincent Jackson(6’5 230) and Bowe(6’2 225) are the only FA WRs that fit this mold IMO. If i were choosing I would take Bowe b/c he is 2.5 years younger.
My reasoning for needing a big, physically intimidting WR is that we need only to look at our divisional opponents. Both the Giants(Nicks) and Cowboys(Dez) have these types of WRs and create mismatches in opposing teams secondaries. This is the evolution of the WR position and we need to reflect this on our roster. No more finesse WRs!
If you want my 2 cents, we need to draft a stud WR like Justin Blackmon if we really want to do some damage. I dont see this happening since he will be gone in the 1st and I think we take a QB in the first. But could you imagine Blackmon in the 1st and RGIII or Tannehill in the 2nd (if they make it that far)? Take a page out of the Cincy 2010 draft.

Marques Colston is pretty big too
and he’s not a prick like the other guys.

by Steve Shoup on Nov 18, 2011 11:13 AM EST up reply actions
Your right, i left him out. He is 6'4 225
I like Colston, but im jsut unsure how much of his success if a product of Drew Brees’ magic and the many other threats on the Saints offense.
Vjax is a prick, I hadnt heard much about Bowe being a bad locker room guy but wouldnt mind being filled in.

by SkinsaneAsylum on Nov 18, 2011 12:19 PM EST up reply actions
all the receivers listed above have great QB's, the same can easily be said about Vjax
Now Bowe is an exception, but generally all these guys are benefited by their QB play.
As for Bowe, I wouldn’t put him on the same level as V-Jax in prickdom, but he’s had some issues. He was suspended for 4 games for PED’s, and he’s had multiple run ins with the coach about not working hard and taking his game to the next level. He’s gotten better in that area, but I think there is a bit of a concern that once he gets paid he might not put in the work.

Fitzie is a class act...
just sayin
by Bullet Nation in Exile on Nov 18, 2011 1:28 PM EST up reply actions
huh?
I was only talking about the free agents listed (I guess you could include Brandon Marshall and Dez Bryant whom SA posted about). Unlike Vincent Jackson or Bowe, Colston is not a headcase.
Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com
Ah, gotcha
The comment you replied to did list Fitzie, sorry :p
by Bullet Nation in Exile on Nov 18, 2011 1:59 PM EST up reply actions
haha no worries
yeah i didn’t mean to include Fitz, Calvin Johnson or Nicks
Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com
Why is Ted Ginn on that list?
Eddie Royal is a good free agent target who knows shanahans system. Dwayne Bowe has been a pretty good number 1 reciever.
But my vote was for Marques Colston- He’s definetly one of the most underrated recievers in the NFL.
Vincent Jackson, on the list again...!

Need a Big Threat
Even with Moss, the Skins have lacked a true No. 1 WR threat for years. Hankerson was drafted to potentially fulfill that position, which has yet to be seen (hoping his 100 yd game against MIA was just the beginning).
Adding a No. 1 WR in the off-season would help take some pressure off the QB, give time for Hankerson to develop, and open up things for Moss (hopefully moving him to the slot).
Of all the FA WR’s mentioned, none are really good investments. Meachem & Ginn are average & Manningham is just a notch above them. Welker works more in the slot. Colston has been injury prone & VJAX has been inconsistent (not to mention the off-field issues). DJAX is more of a deep threat plus has concussion issues.
Mike Wallace would be best pickup.
again, we are confronted with a dilemma...
the best, most talented players are extremely egotistical, with some form of off-field issue. If all these guys were saints, V-Jax would be the hands down selection, since he is top 5 or 10 WR in the league. But that is not the case. So a team must decide if they can put up with the head case. One line of thinking is – San Diego has been putting up with his act and he still performs, year after year. The other is – guys like Randy Moss and Albert Haynesworthless underperformed and isolated themselves in their new locker rooms, at the same time, stealing from the owner. We, as fans, need to not care about the off-field stuff; leave that to the FO. We want the best talent on this team. That makes the selection easily V-Jax.
the other thing you got to remember is V-Jax has and established QB and a great offense to work with
if he’s that bad in San Diego imagine how much of a head case he’ll be here
Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com
shanny's prolly wont bring any distractions to the table
if only these guys can be like fitzgerald. not saying he’s a saint, but i like the way he conducts himself. and his performance on the field is just unbelievable. but as someone else posted…..alot of these top FA’s have the BIG EGO mentality’s and that’s the gamble you have to take, bringing them in.
Mike Wallace....hands down....
he is one of the younger guys on the list….a burner like we (and most teams) have never seen, and is also consistent as a possession reciever when needed. Colston and V.Jack disappear at times….D.Jack is a whiney bitch, Welker is a slot guy, and Meachem and Ginn are VERY inconsistent. I don’t mind Manningham…but my choice would be Wallace between the 2. However…..I don’t see any way Wallace hits the market w/ Hines Ward getting long in the tooth. They need at least 3 in Pitt and with Wallace, Cotchery, and Brown…..they have it.
At least "WE ARE" not Penn State!!!
he's a restricted free agent so it's a moot point anyways
Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com
He was put into the discussion...
if I had my pick…it’s hm! If we can’t have him….then Manningham is my #2!
At least "WE ARE" not Penn State!!!
i get that, but you mine as well add Andre Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald then
Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com
I have 2 of those and a side order of....
Matt Forte…….while we are at it….I will take the Texans offensive line!
At least "WE ARE" not Penn State!!!
haha agreed
then we can go draft Barkley and low and behold he puts up great numbers!
Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com
What sucks....
is after re-reading our little thread…I got the mental picture of a balloon bursting…..huh…..back to reality!!!
At least "WE ARE" not Penn State!!!
I know he's a jerk, but....
DeSean Jackson is going to really be motivated to play against the Eagles twice a year.
Of course, I remember him hearing footsteps ALOT from Landry over his career, so that might outweigh it. But a guy who has a chip on his shoulder against one of the teams, and naturally dislikes the other two that we play 6 games a year with…..
No Danny, Nooooooo - Tom Landry, 1982., and Washington Redskins fans, 1999-
Unfortunately the better receivers on this list are douchebags.
Welker is just a little too old for me. Dwayne Bowe is a solid guy, Vincent Jackson is the one who I’d want the most, but I don’t want to blow money on him. DeSean Jackson is a monster deep threat, but he wants big money and we gotta make sure we have a QB to throw to him. Wallace isn’t a real option. Marques Colston may be the best option, it’s just hard to say. I’d go with Colston or Bowe, although VJax would be my #1 choice if we could get him cheaper.
Dwayne Bowe is also a FA
He would be my top choice, even though I doubt KC lets him go.
Formerly know as iNFamous SWaGG
I think very few of these WR worth anything
leave their current teams. Welker is not leaving NE, Jackson is not leaving Philly, and I doubt Colston will leave NO. Manningham seems like the best choice to me, as I think he may want to emmerge from the shadows of Nicks in NY.
Crying Lion
I agree with the one exception that Colston might slip through
Saints have a number of free agents next year and might not have enough money for everyone, and they could let Colston walk

He'll be 29, and I'm not sure he'd make a hugh difference for us immediately
I’d like a guy in his mid 20’s, with some good years left.

How about a guy in his early 20s with his whole career in front of him?

If only there were some system in which young talented players could leave college and perhaps be "selected" by an NFL team that would then put these talented youths on the field to play for them
Unfortunately this could only exist in fantasy land
by alwaysremember21 on Nov 19, 2011 5:10 PM EST up reply actions
yes but they can't afford to use a 1st or a 2nd rounder on a WR
Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com
Not this draft, but down the road they could or they find a guy in later rounds
Several players up there werent first rounders
by alwaysremember21 on Nov 21, 2011 2:01 PM EST up reply actions
no i agree with that
and i’ve been mocking the Redskins WR’s in the 4th-6th rounds
Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com
yeah but that should also make him far more affordable
Guys like Bowe and Vincent Jackson are going to get in the neighborhood of $10 million a year for 5-7 years, despite being big time potential lockerroom issues and both having off the field baggage (if either screws up again they will be suspended for an entire season).
Colston should cost in the neighborhood of $6.5-8 million (I’d guess low 7’s) for 4-5 years, and doesn’t have any of that baggage.
Whether we have a Matt Flynn type of QB or a rookie, I’d take Colston easily. The last thing I want is some WR with a bad attitude clashing with my young QB.

I can't see Jackson STAYING in Philly.
They’re going to have to tender him, and he’s not worth it. He keeps getting close to lighting the old Bridge Fire there, and it doesn’t look like he really wants to play in the organisation much longer.
I see him walking, I really do. But I see him going somewhere else, like San Francisco, or the Jets, or (maybe) Miami. If he were to stay in the NFC East though, I see him trying to hook up here, in good old Paydayland.
