Friday Morning Debate -- Which Redskins Running Back Will Have the Best Day Against the Eagles?

This is NOT a referendum on which running back you think should start or even who you like best. I love the fact that we have three guys and that any of them could explode on an opponent. This is a crapshoot, quasi-fantasy scoring based query.

I think that between Ryan Torain, Tim Hightower and Roy Helu, the Redskins seem pretty set to run the ball effectively. Perhaps in the comments section you can elaborate over why you picked the one you did. On any given Sunday, any one of these guys could turn in the best fantasy scorecard.

**I feel the need to make clear that I value Redskins victories above fantasy stats and scoring. I could just sense that coming up...somehow.

Eagles seem to have RZ trouble defensively.

I’m expecting TIMMY! to vulture a few TDs

I’m recalling Torain’s truck over Mikell last year. I could see that happening again on the Eagles’ weak linebacking corp.

This

We’re a small defense… Torrain’s psycho-running will allow him the most production.

This is why I voted Torain

That, and I expect him to see the lion’s share of carries since he showed flashes of the old healthy Torain we saw over part of last season.

Exaclty what I was about to comment on

Mikell got steam rolled, and while he is no longer a member of the steam team (steaming pile of…) those LBs look ripe for the picking…

Look for a repeat trucking of the Eagles D from Torain and Hightower, with some Helu mixed in as well…

Hail to 'Em

I remember torrain havin a big game last year

But I think helu will have the best all around game, if we block well enough that he can run routes instead of blocking, the eagles aren’t very good at linebacker and he would be a tough cover

by BmoreRedskin on Oct 7, 2011 11:30 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

Torain

I don’t think Torain will have the most yards out of the group, but he will be the steam locomotive to power in at least a couple of TD…

by dr WNC on Oct 7, 2011 11:33 AM EDT reply actions

I don't know who will have the best game (but ill just go with Helu for the hell of it)

I expect all 3 to be productive when called upon given the state of the Eagles run defense which will be even weaker with the injuries they have.

by PJ_21 on Oct 7, 2011 11:56 AM EDT reply actions

Torain

Him and Helu will will have big days against Philly’s awful linebacking corps.
I just hope Reid sticks with hisses first, second, third, AND FOURTH mentality.m

Where do they teach you to talk like this? In some Panama City "Sailor wanna hump-hump" bar, or is it getaway day and your last shot at his whiskey? Sell crazy someplace else, we're all stocked up here.

wow

Torain has 1 big game and suddenly 63% seem to think he’s going to rattle off hundred yard games like they’re nothing week after week.

by TheDeepBall on Oct 7, 2011 12:29 PM EDT reply actions

Torain is a beast hun. He just has a durability problem. lol If he could stay healthy, he is EASILY the best back on this roster. But we have to see if he can hold up.

Remember last year?

More production from Torain then than whatever you guys have going on this year with Helu and Timmy ‘Preseason Stud’ Hightower.

I seriously think he outproduces your other RBs but that’s all dependent on him not getting injured.

we never

had even close to 200 yards rushing in a single game last season. This season we’ve almost had 200 yards twice, and one of those games was without Torain at all.

by TheDeepBall on Oct 7, 2011 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Torain had 172 last season against Tampa

Everything Hightower was doing successfully in the preseason he seems to be shying away from now. He was making great cuts and hitting the hole hard in the preseason, not it seems like he’s trying to use his non existent speed to beat people to the outside.

thats because last year we didnt have atleast two backs that could get the job done…

Agreed

Helu has been more impressive in my opinion. They need to give him more to do.

i would like to see Helu get more touches as well..

by tommy gunn on Oct 8, 2011 6:48 PM EDT up reply actions

What else does he have to prove?

He clearly has talent and makes the most of every limited carry. I can’t say the same for Hightower or Torain (even last game). Why not start him?

Contrary to popular belief, I am not Jewish.

by DCO'sfan on Oct 9, 2011 8:27 AM EDT up reply actions

It's the NFL! It's situational running. What does it matter who the "starter" is?

Each back complements the other. The formula for a winning running game in DC isn’t pounding Helu 25+ times a game or making him the “starter” or feature back. It needs to be an even mix with each back getting 8-12 carries. If one has a hot hand then ride the hot hand.

Torrain

He seems to be the least banged up at this point. Would love to see all the backs in there but it seems kinda difficult to spread the ball to all three. Has Torrain’s blocking improved?

will rattle off a hundred yard game like it’s nothing every week for the rest of the season even if he gets hurt again.

I think HIghtower

Only reason-Torrain gave Hightower the motivation last game to show he is the Man.

by seiberus on Oct 7, 2011 1:05 PM EDT reply actions

Honestly...

I like em all. When a defense gears up to address Tim Hightower’s style and then we rotate Helu in, Helu runs right through them. Helu is able to capitalize on the mental focusing of a defense to game plan Tim’s style and skill. I think the best thing about us having 3 amazing RBs who all create a bit of different headache for an defense, is that we are able to open the flood gates of yardage gains!

I’m loving how we handle our running currently. All three definitely seem to feed on each other. The Eagles I think are going to have a hard time adjusting to whom ever starts and we rotate in and out.

by Jpage0024 on Oct 7, 2011 1:07 PM EDT reply actions

lets not be fooled

we do not have 3 amazing hb….there not 3 amazing hb in the league….we have 3 hb that fit our schemes, but none are garunteed 100/game

I know it was the Rams

but Torain was in pure beast mode last Sunday and I think that continues against the Eaglets. He’s back, he’s healthy, and he wants to prove that he should be the #1 RB on our team.

You had me at Helu..

by VA_Skin on Oct 7, 2011 1:07 PM EDT reply actions

The great thing is

he does have to prove it. This is the best RB competition/depth we’ve had in years thinks to Shanny.

You had me at Helu..

by VA_Skin on Oct 7, 2011 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Depth, perhaps

but quality? Healthy Portis and Betts were better. Stephen Davis was better also. It’s possible that Helu could develop into something special, but none of these guys are spectacular. They work hard and are easy to root for, but not game changers.

What?

Torain single-handedly changed the Rams game. That’s a “game changer”.

by iH8dallas on Oct 7, 2011 7:52 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Option 4?

I have no idea. Hightower apparently had some sort of injury that led to Torrain getting those carries. If Hightower is healthy, does torrain even get in the game?

Formerly KS and CS

by ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown on Oct 7, 2011 1:10 PM EDT reply actions

It depends

If we still don’t have a fullback you have to go Torain or Helu. Hightower is a great back but he needs a fullback to be successful.

I am going to have to go with Charlie Harraway on this one. I think he is going to start over Mike Hull while Larry rehabs.

which adds to the pleasure

Shady destroyed the 49ers! Whats his rushes per game? 25?20? A little over 15. You say their line is good. I say their OLine is the reason Vick suffered injuries in back to back games. He has been running for his life. McCoy is a good runner, but i don’t think their OLine is all that and a bag of chips.

by hambonejackson on Oct 8, 2011 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Torain

I think torain will be most productive bc he seems to be the power back. The eagles are a smaller defense so it just seems like a power back would be used more. Look at all the running backs that had big games against the eagles all power backs.

by skins92 on Oct 7, 2011 5:57 PM EDT reply actions

Someone said up at the top "Psycho Running"

And I think that’s the perfect way to describe Torain. It’s like he just doesn’t care about what or who is in front of him, just run, as fast as you can like you’re on fire. I love it. That being said, Helu has the most yards because I think he’ll have 2 long runs, but Torain sets the tone.

"That's what she said!"

by iH8dallas on Oct 7, 2011 7:42 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Hightower

There was an article talking about the O-line and how happy the coach was with Chester. He cited one play when Chester used his arm to get clear of one guy, then nailed another, opening a huge hole. Unfortunately, Hightower didn’t go through the hole, and the play was stopped, but the coach was very happy with Chester. When I read it, I noted the Hightower comment, and wondered if that was part of the reason they put in Torain. Of course, Tim hurt his shoulder, too.

by Donnio1234 on Oct 7, 2011 10:35 PM EDT reply actions

It really depends

on what kind of play calls will Kyle Shanahan ‘throw’ at the Eagles. For some reason KS has this Maddenesque fantasy of trying to chuck it all over the place, and isn’t being dedicated to the run.

Rather he’ll stick with the running attack for a short period of time and then just lose focus.

by Big Spoon on Oct 8, 2011 2:25 AM EDT reply actions

I think Kyle tries to mix things up, fool the other team

which is fine – be very deceptive. But sometimes you just have to use common sense, go with your strength, go with what is working. It’s a delicate balance, more an art than a science.
