Brandyn Thompson is waived to make room for Phillip  Buchanon

Via Redskins Insider:

The Washington Redskins have waived rookie cornerback Brandyn Thompson to make room on the 53-man roster for veteran defensive back Phillip Buchanon, according to 106.7 The Fan’s Grant Paulsen.

It's always tough seeing a young talent get cut for an older guy, but in Shanny We Trust? Buchanon was suspended for violating PED drug policy, which he claimed was an honest mistake.

Sucks... but maybe he has to go through waivers and will then be on the PS?

Cut Nate Ness (sweet name) from the PS and make room for Thompson.

Banks isn't eligible for practice squad

if that is what you are asking.

Interesting that they did this now when they had an exemption until Monday.

Why would they wait until Monday?

By doing it now Thompson gets batched into the weekly waivers, instead of standing out alone on Sunday/Monday next week. If teams needed CB help for this week then they’ve likely already made a move. If the Skins want to keep Thompson on the PS, then this route gives them a higher probability of retaining him.

PS

could be that waiving him now allows them to sign him to the practice squad in time for next weeks practices. Waiving him now or on monday has no effect on opposing teams ability to sign him, they can do so at any time he is on the practice squad.

When are you more likely to overlook something:

When you have 50 papers on your desk or when just one is sitting there?

I'm not referring to practice squad.

And he isn’t eligible, and even if he was I’m sure the Iowa Barnstormers would grab him off of waivers. (joking)

Parks

Apparently you are only “In Shanny We Trust” when it comes to Rexy.

by Kurtstack on Oct 5, 2011 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I mean he is the best QB we have right now...

I don’t understand what you guys see in Beck. He struggled a little against nobodies. The offense will be alright with Rex and worse with Beck. No reason to make a change when we have a winning record.

"I don’t understand what you guys see in Beck."

I think it’s mostly due to his throwing motion. It was pretty impressive in the Preseason. He has a faster release and a little more velocity then Rex.

But I’m in your camp, don’t change qb’s unless Shanny says so.

Yea that 46 QB rating against starters and the ducks he threw against Baltimore were impressive

He had a couple of nice roll outs in the second game.

And when he did hit some receivers, the balls didn’t look too bad. You know, if Rex goes down due to injury, he’s the next man up….(I’m not asking for it, just saying.)

Is that how depth charts work nowadays?

If that does happen I’ll fully support Beck, but until then (or hopefully never)

No, you can always not be in shape and not know how to run your team’s two minute drill….

Smart Move

A team lacking in veteran presence needs a guy like Buchanon. Thompson wasn’t going to see a lot of PT anyways. We stiil have Gomes, who can be an emergency 5th CB if needed.

We haven't seen Hank play since pre-season

Does anybody know how he’s doing? Has Shanahan said anything (since commenting that he was promising but needed more work). I think Stallworth is the # 4 or 5 receiver (close to Austin) and hasn’t done much because he hasn’t played much, and is rarely the primary receiver. Paul, Hank and Banks are 6, 7 and 8.

by Donnio1234 on Oct 5, 2011 12:29 PM EDT reply actions

From what I've read, since he doesn't play special teams and isn't ahead of anybody else on the dpeth chart

it will probably be a while before he sees the field, maybe if we are struggling or someone is out for a long time

by Draco on Oct 5, 2011 12:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I really think he

needs to get involved in the offense by middle of the year, to make an impact next year, with no playing time experience this year next year he’ll just be a rookie v1.2 while Kerrigan and everyone else other than jenkins will be Kerrigan v2.0

Niles Paul is getting a lot more playing time each game, it seems

the first two games, they’d put him on the field and you knew it’d be a running play. I don’t remember him being targeted Sunday, but he was definitely out there as a WR on passing plays. Don’t be surprised when Paul works his way into some targets the next couple games.

by CarverM on Oct 5, 2011 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

16 of 18 snaps sunday were run plays.

He was not targeted on the 2 pass plays.

I think the only way we see Hank this year is if Skins get eliminated from the playoffs.

by ATLtruth on Oct 5, 2011 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions

And sounds like he has indeed his the practice squad. They really do consider it part of a expanded roster.

by ATLtruth on Oct 5, 2011 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Well I’m probably one of the few Buchannon fans on the planet, but I can’t remember him missing a whole lot of tackles and for a CB he usually brings some wood with him. He also serves as a solid returner so you get some added depth there. To be honest when Rodgers got hurt I thought that he outplayed him by a considerable margin and he can at least catch a ball.

He's a solid nickleback and had some good games last year.
