Defense/WRs Disappoint Against Carolina

Wow.  I didn't think I'd say this at all this season, but the majority of the blame for this loss goes to the defense.  Yes, the defense played miserably today aside from a few rare highlights.  The defense was horrendous in third down situations, and just couldn't seem to get off the field without giving up a score.  They did not do a very good job of containing or tackling Cam Newton.  They did not look good against the run, and we continue to show week-in and week-out that we are entirely incapable of covering a legit #1 WR in this league.  CB should be a HIGH priority for us this off-season.

Now the way to beat Carolina is to beat them in a shoot-out.  Their defense is horrendous, and just about everybody has been able to edge out Carolina in a high scoring affair.  Unfortunately for us, there were too many dropped balls, poor blocking, and key turnovers for us to overcome on the offensive side.

Star-divide

John Beck played well, but could have potentially had a great game if his WRs would have been able to hold onto the football.  Way too many balls were dropped that hit WRs in the hands.  Gaffney and Davis had back-to-back drops that killed a key drive for the Redskins in the second half.  Gaffney had a key drop and then a catch/fumble at the end of the first half that not only prevented us from scoring before half-time, but gave Carolina a gift 3-point lead going into half-time.

John Beck was a true gamer today.  Despite all of the dropped passes and extremely poor play of the offensive line, John Beck hung in there and put up some admirable stats and made some excellent throws when the pressure was on.  I give John Beck a lot of credit today, despite some very poorly thrown balls, but hey we knew that was going to happen.  Beck certainly exceeded my expectations and if the defense can get back to form, should be able to win us more ballgames than he loses.

Anyway, we lost to a good Carolina team on the road.  Carolina is getting better and better as the season goes on, and they have the key component to a rebuild that the Redskins yet to acquire... a franchise QB!!

Bottom line.  This Redskins team is one that HAS to win games with solid defense.  The defense must play a hell of a lot better if this team wants to win any more ballgames this year.  I truly expect better, at least on the defensive side of the ball.

I do not understand

what the hell Reed was doing most of the time. Safety was supposed to be a strength for us but now has become a weakness. I usually defend Reed as I believe he is a good tackler (something we cannot seem to grasp) but my God he is the deep help and was beaten like a cheap ho.

Just say NO! to Rex Grossman.

Getting beat

By WRs is becoming a common theme with this team, and I firmly believe the entire secondary is to blame… whether it be missed assignments, poor execution, or plain lack of skill.

407 the magic number

That’s the yardage the Panthers put on our defense today. A rookie QB only had like four incompletions. No fumbles, No int’s. One back averaged over 10 yards a carry. Smith had 153 yards receiving. We’re lucky if one of ours had 53. Two games in a row the defense has sleepwalked through the game. The Panthers took the Eagles run plays right off the film and did exactly the same thing. Even Laron looked like he was just trotting around out there. Shanahan had better wake this group up.

Time to forget

About the fact that Newton is a rookie. He was the best player on the field yesterday. I’m glad he’s not in our division. Not that I’m giving the defense an out. They played like ass. But it was compounded by the fact that we were going against an emerging superstar.

It's not Haz's fault

that guys just did not show up to play……the scheme is sound in my opinion

Just say NO! to Rex Grossman.

I think he has actually done a great job.

He puts the defense in position to make plays. Our defense didn’t execute in the run game, and I think our CBS should play in the CFL.

Getting tired of watching Gaffney drop balls game after game.

Time to have Armstrong, Austin and Paul be our starting WRs. (now that Moss is injured)

The Defense played... how do I put this?

Vanilla? … is that the right term? Also I’m not sure what the issues are with our receivers all the sudden not being able to hold on to a well placed pass.. Gaffney made we want to run into a wall. The QB position was fairly stable yesterday, except all the sudden the WR’s take a day off and the defense. Sad loss. Though it shows some promise if the team can all show up and play in rhythm.

I noticed they mentioned Fletcher and Rex were sick.

I wonder how many other guys were sick and it affected their play.

All of them?

Fletcher played through it, but he left with a bad hammy. At least that’s what they said on TV.

I heard that the hammy was a false report.

Fletcher was barfing on the sidelines, so they held him out. I think a bunch of the guys were sick yesterday.

Makes sense

I was kinda sick myself, watching that performance.

Oh, you’re talking about BEFORE the game?

Nice...

So the coaches would rather play LFB who is constantly barfing than our depth… Hmm

it's London Fletcher.......

so yes…..are YOU going to tell him he can’t play?

How can our WR's disappoint?

Our starting guys(aside from Moss) are a bunch of 6’ and under has beens and no-names. If anything, they have exceeded expectations.

John Denver was a musical genius

Beck didn't play well...he played average

which looked reasonable when compared to he predecessors last game….

But he did play at the level he is capable of and that can win games if, as you say, the D steps up.

by DavidDunn on Oct 24, 2011 10:21 AM EDT reply actions

Beck did as well as he could with what he had.

I don’t know what more you wanted him to do. The first half was rusty but we barely even passed so I don’t know how much you can take from him in the first half. I felt he did what he had to do when we had the ball…. which was difficult because we barely even had the ball. Bottom line is you can’t blame him for the loss, which for some strange reason a lot of people are. The defense never gave the team a chance to win. You go from making it 16-13 to giving up a TD right after. Then we come back with that drive where Gaffney and Fred had huge drops that would’ve continued the drive. Then the rest is history. Defense just couldn’t get off the field, that’s why we lost the game. Those two long drives by the Panthers were just daggers.

just out of curiosity..

How many of you like Logan Paulsen? I thought he played great and actually showed he is a capable receiver and even bowled over some guys.

Just tried to bring a bright spot to that pile of dung.

Just say NO! to Rex Grossman.

Logen Paulsen was great, as was Fred Davis

Makes me think Captain Chaos isn’t long for this team…

Beck throws an ugly ball

I think that has to do with all the drops… didn’t see them with Rex.

no need to get upset over another loss fellow skin fans

i had a hunch that durring the bye week. shanahan and crew thought and thought about it. and decided to not make a playoff run without a good qb. so they pretty much blew the philly game and the panther game. i was really pissed after the philly game but wasnt mad at all after the panther game… because i now know the plan is to lose the rest of the games to get a better draft pick without having to give up something to move up. plus lets face it. looking at our schedule. only the dolphin game wouldbe a lock to win…. but with the way we are playing i think we can lose that game too….

sucking for Luck or any version thereof is a fallacy

as there are too many private interests at stake.

Just say NO! to Rex Grossman.

by irishgoon on Oct 24, 2011 12:03 PM EDT up reply actions

you have to let go of that theory......

I certainly don’t mean this as a put down, but you strike as a younger fan…..at least I hope so. We are not trying to lose anything, it just doesn’t work that way. Besides the “private interests” remember that Shanny is actually trying to build a winner here and he wants players who are going to give 100% on every play no matter what.

if it is not one thing, it's another...

Here are my observations – for 20 years now, it does not seem to matter who the players are, or the coaches…we play down to our opponents and they tease us with wins over teams we should lose to. This false hope has me pulling my hair out, leaving me bald. We started out beating N.Y. G-men, which is slightly surprising and running our record to 3-1, giving us some idea what fans in New England, Pittsburgh and Green Bay are enjoying. Then they allow beatable teams, like Carolina, to give them a good case of whip***. It is not one particular group either, RBs one week, entire DEF another, which just adds to the insanity. Lack of consistency in any area seems to plague us, no matter what. I almost could hardly bear it yesterday. It makes me wonder, what does it really take to put together a winning organization? Just when we think they have finally figured it out, they give us yesterday’s results. PATHETIC AND DISGUSTING!!!!!!!!

by jgibbsfan1 on Oct 24, 2011 12:04 PM EDT reply actions

I think you're being too hard on the defense, Kurt

Part of the time-of-possession issue is the defense not getting off the field, but part of it is the offense not staying on the field. The first word I would use to describe the way the 2nd half defense looked is “tired.” We weren’t getting pressure from the line in the 2nd half.

by sofutomygaha on Oct 24, 2011 12:35 PM EDT reply actions

the other part is

Playing against a Hell of a player. Nobody has stopped him yet.
