“We talked all year that continuity is so important,” Redskins line coach Chris Foerster said. “We lost continuity this week.”

For all those that called for a totally revamped O-Line this offseason, this is just as important – or so it seem to be according to our Offensive line coach…………Continuity

This is why our line was playing better. This is why we left Licht(who many called out as being terrible last year)at LG. This is why we re-signed Brown. 4 of the same guys who started on the line last year remained on the starting line this year.

That could equal failure

A piece or two would be fine. Licht was playing well at G before the injury. Monty was playing well at C before the move. I wouldn’t mind an interior guy, but I hope we leave the T’s alone. Willie Smith could be one of our starting OT’s in 2 years.

Alternatively

we could just overhaul the entire thing and deal with a season of growing pains in return for 10+ years of continuity out of our new, young offensive linemen.

by TheDeepBall on Oct 21, 2011 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions

exactly

how many guys currently project to be part of our line in 2 or 3 years?

Monty and Licht are UFA’s next year (and Licht coming off the injury is an unknown)

Brown isn’t getting any younger (or better)

Chester could be a starter for another year, but after that maybe you consider making him a back-up.

Trent is really the only one, and then some sort of hope that Willie Smith, Hurt or Cook develop

Don't get me wrong

He’s a good player but he needs to be on the field. What good is he if he can’t stay on the field and when he’s on the field after these injuries just how healthy is he? We’re heading into week 7 already. He’a also not that young and not very fast. At some point they will have to evaluate the value he brings to the team considering he’s getting a decent buck. I’m sure Shanahan will give him the benefit of the doubt this year and next but don’t forget this is LL’s last year on his contract and it’s not going to be cheap to keep him next year. If Atogwe is off and on the field because of injuries and we have no Landry next year because of the cost…well you get the picture. By the way I can’t stand Kareem Moore and would much rather Doughty on the field.

I don't see how another RB is going to improve on the running game

It seems to me that line play has been a much bigger factor in the success of our running game. And of course with the injuries to Licht and Trent, that weakens our zone blocking scheme that much more. I think it’s a little early to be looking at replacing RB’s, just my opinion.

by willster on Oct 21, 2011 8:41 AM EDT reply actions

I think it is pretty clear that the Redskins need an upgrade here

Helu has big time upside, but he can’t do it alone and Torain and Hightower both have some deficiencies

Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com

by Steve Shoup on Oct 21, 2011 10:00 AM EDT up reply actions

So what do you see as Hightower's deficiency?

I feel like, given time, Helu will distance himself from his competition, and Hightower is an excellent blocker, something Torain struggles with.

by willster on Oct 21, 2011 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Hightower is a 3rd down back only. He can really help on pass plays both blocking and receiving

but the Skins could use someone with a better skill set. Hillis and Helu, could be like Jacobs and Bradshaw for the Giants.

Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com

by Steve Shoup on Oct 21, 2011 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Right now I would love to see...

..Helu getting the nod on 1st and 2nd down. He’s a good pass catcher in the backfield, and of course has excellent speed and the ability to change direction quickly. I agree with Hightower being a good option on 3rd downs. I guess my issue is with trying to use a power RB like Hillis behind a finesse line. Our line is built to be quicker and mobile and not necessarily to facilitate a power running game.

1. it was strepthroat which is a bit more serious than a ‘sore throat’- how are you supposed to run the ball if you have trouble swallowing and are with a fever.

For someone who's had strep throat (twice), #1 is bullshit

Once the penicillin kicks in (or another antibiotic) you’re fine in 3-4 days, maybe even shorter. The fever shouldn’t persist and over the course of the week the soreness goes away. Strep throat is extremely treatable and once it’s identified you’re fine after a few days. It’s not something you sit out for. One thing that can persist, however, is the cough, but I still say that doesn’t keep you out of the game.

Maybe sit out practice, sure. Your body needs some time to recover. Drink some tea. Whatever. But it’s not as serious as you’re suggesting.

I'm sorry but that is b.s.

Hillis wasn’t diagnosed until Thur. night according to reports and he apparently lost 10 lbs that week. That doesn’t sound like a guy who could go at even 50%.

by Steve Shoup on Oct 21, 2011 7:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Have you had strep throat?

I’m guessing not. Fuck yeah it’s uncomfortable at first. Fuck yeah it sucks. But it’s not as debilitating as you’re making it seem. It’s rather easy to fight through it and my second bout was pretty serious. After three days, the swelling in my throat went down, I was completely fever free (and it was initially a fever of 104), and while I was still coughing a ton, I was able to function. It’s a nuisance, to be sure, but this isn’t colonial times. Especially a football player should be able to fight through it.

Contrary to popular belief, I am not Jewish.

it is pretty clear that he was still in the 'worst of it stage' not sure how that wasn't clear the first time

and no i haven’t had strep, but i’m guessing either time you did you weren’t able to out run a bunch of NFL’ers

Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com

by Steve Shoup on Oct 21, 2011 10:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Two Flaws

1) You’re comparing Peyton Hillis playing running back in the NFL with your ability to live your normal, docile life.

2) Not everyone’s experiences and ability to overcome strep throat are the same. My wife, who is a strep “carrier”, will suffer the worst effects for a solid 5-7 days. She had surgery to remove her tonsils, but that means that she only gets strep once every 3-5 months instead of her previous once-per-month.

However….I don’t want Peyton Hillis on this team.

Good Friday morning Hogs Haven!

I think this weekend we will all be surprised by John Beck. I actually think the area we will improve in the most with him at QB is the redzone. I think the ability for him to run it in out of bootlegs, playaction and when a play breaks down = more TDs.

Re shuffling the line?

OK. I can handle it. New quarterback? Sure, I’m fine. More looks for Paulsen, Austin, and (maybe) Paul? Great. But why THE F&@K do I have to deal with Doughty starting again? And at FREE SAFETY? I think I’d rather have Rex back there. At least he’d have the chance to know what it’s like to receive an interception. AND, we wouldn’t have to worry about them using a double move to beat him.

Seriously though, Reed Doughty? Again? Doesn’t anyone have Sam Shade’s number?

Doughty

People only seem to remember his bad plays versus all the good ones he does make. He’s been the Skins leading tackler at times and his worst moment to most fans was when there was a defensive breakdown that left him 1-1 with Andre Johnson. That’s not in any DC’s scheme.

Doughty is better than most backups.

Doughty is a Good Hitter

Thats it. He’s a sure tackler when a RB breaks through to the secondary and when a receiver makes a catch near him.

But he cant COVER. Receivers blow by hit/run around him and get open to make plays. He’s a liability

I rarely watch college football, so I don’t know who he is. But, a couple of mock 2012 drafts peg him as our quarterback of the furture.

by mbedner on Oct 21, 2011 10:44 AM EDT reply actions

RG3

is touted as the “total package” (not Lex Luger). He’s got size, speed, elusiveness (a la Vick) and is extremely accurate albeit in a spread offense with a lot of short passes. I’ve watched a little on him and he is accurate even downfield – his receivers seem to catch the ball in stride almost every time. He also had more TD passes than incompletions through the first 5 games, a stat that is mind boggling. He’s also the son of 2 Army Sergeants and already has an undergrad degree and working on a Graduate degree, so he’s got a good head on his shoulders. Would like to see some more weight on him to play at the pro level but he could still be elite. It also hurts that he plays for Baylor but they are still on the bubble as a top 25 team (thanks to him) so he is getting the exposure. Like him a lot

The line we will see on Sunday isn't that big of a deal, they'll be fine.

And I’ll just put it out there that I think Atogwe will play.

I think it all depends on whether or not he practices today

If not, I’m comfortable with Gomes in as his understudy… just not Doughty
