John Beck Will Start Sunday vs Carolina
Via Adam Schefter (who else), John Beck is officially the Redskins starter vs Carolina (despite getting support from Santana Moss, Jabar Gaffney, and Brian Orakpo). As Ryan Kerrigan said earlier in the week, "I'm only focused on my defensive responsibilities...we'll support whoever's out there."
We've debated it all week and I've been firm on the standpoint I'm OK with either guy starting. Beck no doubt provided a spark in the Eagles game and I certainly see how Shanahan would not want to extinguish that going into the next game.
OK, let's all freak out now....keep in mind, we're playing Carolina who has a 17th ranked passing defense and 25th in sacks.

Shanahan said he would announce it after practice
which is slightly odd since presumably the starter would work with the first team. Why did Mike jump the gun? If he did.
This to me makes it important
to go back to Hightower as the starting RB. His pass pro will be a HUGE help with the left side. Torain just doesn’t do as much without the ball in his hands.
^^^ AGREED.
Expect to see Hightower in pass protection and Logan Paulsen blocking a lot so Fred Davis can catch passes.
Beck will need to be fleet of foot, to survive behind our new line.

IMO that's why he's getting the start
I’d bet that if we didn’t lose both Licht and TW Grossman would still be starting. The slightly better mobility and pocket presence that Beck has is a lot more important without them.

I like Warner. But you've given up on Colt?
(Light hearted joke). No need to debate it.
Steve Young showed more than "signs" he was a good QB.
He was a starter for one of the USFL teams, which played NFL caliber football. He was pretty good, too (one of the stars in the league, along with some dudes named Gary Clark, Herschel Walker, etc.)
Young didn’t do well in TAMPA BAY, yes…. but he was definitely doing more than “showing signs” before he took over from Montana.

but they improve with practice with the first teamers which is something he hasn’t had since the start of the regular season. To take a guy who has stood on the sidelines for 4 3/4 weekends and throw him into a game down 20 points, what do you expect? At least he moved the team and didn’t (drum roll please) throw an interception or fumble. With the damage to the offensive line his mobility has to help where Train Rex has all the mobility of a cinder block.

But the guy has had a lot of chances in the league. People are acting like his time in Miami and Baltimore just didn’t happen.

Given that Matt and Trey have a Tony award winning stage show called Mormon
I could see them making a episode about this for next weeks show.
his time in miami and baltimore happened
But he was a rookie who played what, 5 games on a 1-15 team? Those are hardly circumstances to give someone a chance to succeed. And just because he didn’t beat out Flacco for a starting gig doesn’t mean the he blew his shot or proved to be bad. Flacco is legit.
And who knows what would have happened if Flacco went down with injury and he got a shot in Baltimore as a starter, but that did not happen.

Remember, the biggest knock on Rex is that he makes mistakes
hopefully Beck won’t make so many mistakes. In fact, I have some memory that, if anything, he was overly cautious in pre-season.
Beck makes sense here because they have to find out if he can play. If he can’t, they can always go back to Rex. If they don’t give John a shot, they’ll never know if they have a serviceable QB. I think Rex can and will handle the disappointment well. Losing out again would probably start to wear on Beck.
+1
No one is saying that Beck is the guy. But we have to FIND OUT what he can be for us, because we do not know. It is not impossible that he could be the guy. I am hoping that he could be at least servicable enough to protect the ball, lead us on a few TD drives a game and let the defense continue to do their thing.
It is possible that he will regress from the goods things he showed against the colts and eagles and play terribly.
It would be nonsensical not to find out though.

don’t develop (or rather are not going to change up their footwork for anyone haha). A guy with (is it 4 games? under his belt, all with bad teams) can develop beyond his current talent even in their 30’s. He’s out to prove something and I think it’s obvious in his work ethic, the only issue is he gets no starting QB game time. Is the development going to be immense at that age, probably not, but improvement and development can happen. I use the word develop very loosely haha.

Eh, let's not overstate it
I’ve always heard that the good coaches when rebuilding a team get a defense, then an o line, then a qb.
Despite all the griping last year about the switch to the 3-4 we now have a pretty competitive defense. Next offeseason hopefully we’ll work on our o-line, and if possible find a real starting quarterback. Even if (really when) Beck fails I don’t think it’s going to have the dire implications for Shanahan some people are saying it will. Yea, he’s said he’s putting his trust in Grossman/Beck but what else is he supposed to say? These guys are temporary stopgaps?

Anyone at the game could tell that Beck wasn't the answer
His lack of a good ball makes him as risky as Grossman. He will likely make better reads and is more mobile, but when he throws wounded ducks, that doesn’t matter much.
They can still go back to Rex - no sweat
Just a failed experiment. That said, Mike can never live down not going for a decent QB in the draft or FA. Or not getting another decent O-lineman earlier, or even this week before the trade deadline. He is just determined to stick with what he has, no upgrades. Oh well, he’t the coach.
he can absolutely "live it down"......
as long as he does for the offense this offseason what he did for the defense last offseason. There is no way this mess was going to be fixed this quickly….especially when he created even more mess as soon as he got here. Nobody was expecting a superbowl this year, most were not even expecting a wild card at the beginning of the year.
"Please don't dominate the rap, Jack, if you got nothin' new to say."-Robert Hunter
exactly
He is on record saying that this is a 5 year process. He knows his QB’s aren’t good enough. He prioritized the defense this year with Kerrigan and Jenkins. If they still don’t have a QB next season, then we can grip.

Look, they screwed up with Mcnabb, that’s a given.
However, even if both of these guys don’t work out, it doesn’t mean the circus is back in town. It means that there weren’t great QB options for this team during the past year, so they went with what they had while strengthening other parts of the team, most notably the defense.
If Beck doesn’t work out, its not good….but its certainly not the end of the world.

Your OL may be close to the best the Skins can do in a short order of time. Neither Willie Smith or Maurice Hurt has any

I am excited
to see what Beck can do, but I’m not expecting to see him come out and throw for 300 yards and 4 TDs. He definitely has his limitations but I think this move had to be made if only to minimize the negative play that has come from the QB position with Rex as the starter. I don’t really think that Beck is the QB of the future but I wouldn’t want to go through the whole season without at least seeing what he can do in meaningful games. It is a ballsy move on the surface but Shanny really has the longest leash I think of any coach in the league so he can pretty much do what he wants. If Beck fails, so what? Thats what everyone expects. But if not, then Shanny looks smarter than ever (for at least one week).

I have every confidence that Beck will throw for 300 yards and 4 TDs
I’m just not sure how many games it will take before he gets there.
Seriously, we have NO QB of the future on the roster…. at best, we have our two backup QBs, and we need to decide which one is the guy for now, and to back up our future starter. Because come next spring, we’re either getting a new QB, or we’re back where we’ve been.
Shanny is slightly ahead of schedule on the rebuild: we’re a near-playoff caliber team at the moment, when that’s supposed to be our 2012 season. We might be a legitimate deep threat in the playoffs next year with another strong year of rebuilding, with the Offensive line and QB being the focus. But we have what we have on the roster now. Sure, we can add someone (Kellen Clemens?) but it’s not going to drastically effect our season at this point… we are the team we are. Only injuries and luck are going to change that fate at this point. So folks need to get a grip. I personnaly don’t care which of these guys starts, Beck or Grossman. I’ll root for the team, curse their mistakes, and cheer their good plays. But I’m also aware that right now, the Redskins QB of 2012 is playing collegiate football.

Borderline garbage time. As DavidDunn said below, the Eagles were borderline prevent at that point.

The Florida Gators - The most despised team in all of college football - Which is fantastic.
that isn't what you said...
2 scores is not 7 points…
And both series were not the same…the second started 14 down with 6 min to go, not 15.
and whether you thought it was garbage time or not, the eagles played a base defense and got close to prevent the second series. The tape doesn’t lie.
no the tape doesn't lie
however it is easily mis-interpreted.
Gaffney should have held onto the ball at the ten in the first drive giving us more points or atleast more time to work with.
on the second drive, if stallworth could catch an under thrown ball that hit him in the freaking chest. then our defense goes out and has to stop them with 5 min 20 seconds…
In anycase when you hit a guy deep in the chest with the ball on your last offensive drive of the game is not a prevent defense. if it were a prevent defense the plays we would see would be 10-15 yard underneith patterns and some longer over the middle stuff.
Gaffney had zero chance at that ball it was thrown in the dirt

I think a reread of the comment above is in order
because you ignored half of the sentence.
1. What is a base defense and was Philly in it?
2. What does a receiver and under thrown wounded ducks have to do with the defensive alignment or game context.
3. What does the word close mean to you?
1. not sure what philly's base is but, they rushed 4 got pressure and Beck moved the ball
1.a) great thing to look at here is beck’s first play a screen to Davis, Davis fell Beck back peddled (quickly) and got the ball to him with pressure in his face. I don’t think Grossman would have done the same but thats just my opinion.
2. prevent defense is built to eliminate big plays and plays to the sideline. That play was a big sideline play that was dropped by a receiver. The throw wasn’t perfect (shocker thats what happens when the qb/wr dont have a bunch of reps under their belt, see Beck Austin connection) but the throw was good enough to be caught and it should have been.
3. depends on the context, it seemed to me that you were saying that Beck’s performance should be taken with a grain of salt because he wasn’t playing against an aggressive defense, am I close here?
yes...on 3...that was my point
not the particulars of a true prevent vs. borderline prevent, which I used intentionally. Philly was not showing Beck a ton of looks. As a matter of fact, watching the tape, it looked like he only saw 3-4 different looks the whole time.
I think he will make better reads that Rex and is more mobile in the long run. I have said so. But what I saw at the game were some serious accuracy and delivery issues that do not give me any confidence that he will be any better.
I really don’t think it matters who starts at this point. My bigger concern is the Shanahan duo’s ability to evaluate quarterbacks AND Kyle’s play calling. We are stuck with below average NFL QBs for now.
it was in the sense of the Eagles defense
they rarely blitzed him and were leaving guys open underneath…though Beck couldn’t always hit them.

incorrect, mistaken, of untrue meaning
yes they are rushing 4 the majority of the time, but that doesn’t constitute a prevent defense or garbage time.
funny how you ignored the beginning of the sentence
The Eagles were in pure base defense, borderline prevent at that point.
and then admitted they rushed 4 every play (the blitzed once), proving my point. Prevent doesn’t automatically mean 3 rushers, it can also many more than 3 deep…i.e the word borderline as well as dropping LBs deep.
Its all right here…. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIU-bUtEaLY&feature=player_embedded
If you are going to say something is false, it would be good to consider the full statement and actually have some facts to back it up.
I admit I was wrong to say 'false' towards that statement
But I believe that I am right in the assumption that you are downplaying Beck’s performanced based on the type of defense he was playing against. If this is the case I completely disagree. No need to rush more than 4 when you’re getting pressure with them. Infact I think it is more impressive that he moved the ball against 6 in coverage while evading pressure than if he did so against 5 or less dropped into coverage.
by skinsfan28 on Oct 19, 2011 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
we will agree to disagree there....
I think that the amount of people in coverage is not as informative as to how a QB reacts to different looks etc and the QB accuracy when making the reads.
We agree that in base looks, Beck did a good, if not great job, of making the right reads. But he was pretty bad on step two, ball delivery. And the reason that this matters is it came when he wasn’t under duress. There were some egregious throws in there and when D coordinators are throwing the kitchen sink at him, I don’t expect it to get better.
It is what it is at this point…we don’t have a good QB
It doesn't really matter, but I would have stuck with Rex
I saw enough wounded ducks by Beck to know he isn’t the answer. I also think the players don’t trust Beck based on body language during the game and comments this week.
Into the Beck era, for 10 games and a college QB to be determined.
18 TO in 8 Games...
I wasn’t really for the switch on Mon. But that stat made me realize the skins can’t be a playoff team turning the ball over 2 times a game. And that is just Grossman, the rest of the team may have turned it over 2 times in that span. Some teams can win turning it over 2 times a game, not the skins. I have a feeling Shanahanis realistic and just asks these QBs to not turn the ball over, and follow the game plan. Simple. If Beck improves on only the TO number, it’s a better situation. I don’t know if I have it in me to go an entire season on the Grossman roller coaster. His fault or not.
I have more faith in Becks panic mode
Everytime rex goes into panic mode or a play goes on longer than it should it usually ends in terrible things…i believe with becks ability to hopefulyl extend the play and do good things (while running for his life)
With Gross in the game
I can honestly say I hate watching our offense! I just know nothing good will come of it!

Wait...
Do these “good things” include holding the ball out like he’s playing catch on the sidelines 9 yards into a scramble?
Be cautious with your optimism, I think a lot of fans are seeing their own wishful thinking in Beck.

Carolina has been putting up big numbers on everyone they play. And there is no way D Hall will be able to cover S. Smith.
I don't think so. Shanny said he's at like 80-85%, I'm sure it will be a game day decision but I wouldn't bet on him starting

It seems like the general fan perception is that the season is over,
so why not start some of the young WRs? I’d like to see Hankerson have some time to fix his route running and hand-eye coordination on the field.
I'm definitely not one of the "Season is Over" guys.
I still think we win the division, but I would like to see him active as a 5th receiver and have one or two balls thrown his way.
"That's what she said!"
You can't do that
The players know who can play and who can’t. If you start forcing guys who can’t play onto the field over guys who are better than them just because they are draft picks, the coach will lose the locker room. If Hankerson were at all ready to play, he would already be on the field. It’s not like there are future HOF players in front of him.

I desperately want to see the draft picks on the field too, but if the experienced guys are better “right now” then that is who you go with…besides, a year under the system and to learn from Moss and Gaffney can’t possibly hurt!
Now they see why we love our skins so much...HTTR!!!
Austin and Beck
worked out together during the strike and they seemed to have a connection during the pre-season. If Austin can get some time on the field I believe he’ll be very productive.

Interesting quote from Casserly yesterday
“Ryan Kerrigan is a good football player who solidified that position. You now have two bookends there, you’re strong there. From the Redskins point of view, they didn’t believe in Blaine Gabbert or Christian Ponder as they guy that would have been the ultimate solution,” Casserly said. “[But] I probably would have taken Gabbert at 10 and not forced him into play this year. Play Rex Grossman or John Beck and bring him along slowly. I think he’ll be good enough in the end.”

I like Casserly as a person, but he has a TERRIBLE history of choosing personnel. During his years with the team in them mid-90’s, they wiffed on many many top round draft picks.
So Casserly may say some interesting things, but you can’t value any endorsement he might give on a player.
by StephanHart on Oct 19, 2011 10:56 AM EDT up reply actions
This team is better for the next decade
with Kerrigan than Gabbert. Add in all of the other players that we were able to draft because of the trade, and its a no-brainer.
I wouldn't trade the Kerrigan pick for any other player in the draft, except maybe Cam.
"That's what she said!"
I don't get the Casserly quote
He is saying we drafted for a huge need on D and solidified the position for the next decade. Then he says we should of drafted Gabbert at 10 because he was there. Not the right fit, not a great prospect but just because he was there. Then he wants us to sit Gabbert.
So no Kerrigan + no Gabbert playing = we are a worse team than before.
Good call Chuck.

Yeah, sort of odd
I might have taken Gabbert, but it was a close call. I might have just waited and tried hard to get Ponder, Kaepernick, Dalton or Mallett. Would depend on how high I was on Kerrigan. The draft didn’t go the way most of us figured (all the top QBs going early).

A smarter version (less likely to throw into double and triple coverage) of Rex is what I expect for the most part
For Instance
On the first interception that Rex threw on Sunday, he had Santana Moss wide open 5 yards deep across the middle of the field on a 3rd and 15+. All he needed to do was loft it with some touch to Moss, who would have scampered for at least 8.
If he didn’t get the first down, we would have been able to kick a field goal and strike first with points.
Instead, Rex chucked it into 3 man coverage to Fred Davis. Interception, drive over.
I think Beck will check down to better options when given the opportunity for more often than Rex did.

Ohh how quickly we all forget...
A couple of years back we had a QB that was too slow through progressions and made some very questionable decisions. Then he was injured and we had to turn to the 30 something year old washed up never gonna make it in this league journey man…
TODD COLLINS
He single handedly took us through the darkness to the playoffs. Beck will be the Todd.

Covering their tight ends will be key to this game.
Newton throws it their way almost every time.
"That's what she said!"
The nice thing is, the D basically will use the same game plan as they used during the second half of the Eagles game
so things should already be familiar
I have disagree, he doesn't throw to them as much as you think.
For whatever reason, I’ve watched the Panthers a lot this year. If you look at their roster then you’d immediately think Olsen/Shockey are prime targets and a great safety blanket for a young QB. In reality, it seems as if Newton is just discovering his TEs. In tough spots Newton just seems to launch it to Smith and hope he makes a catch (which he has done). I’d argue it’s more important to key in on Johnathan Stewart, who has been getting a great deal of targets out of the backfield. I think if you broke Newton done it would be something like this:
WR: 50 %
TE: 25%
RB: 25%

Also tackling Cam on the first hit is important.
I’ve watched him a lot and he’s like a better Roethlisberger in being able to shed defenders.
"That's what she said!"
Also the way I feel about John starting is that...
I feel (based on his off field actions and interviews) that he’s getting this news and saying, “alright it’s time to get to work” as if every drop of his blood is going into this game. Whereas I feel with Rex that a starting position is kind of a “sweet, I’ve held on to the start another week”. Again these are all just feeling’s but off the field presence and ethics seem to favor Beck. So even if he can’t succeed, I feel like he really is doing everything in his power to help us win. Just the interviews post game last week, gave me those feelings. I can root for a guy to works every part of his ass off and admits his weaknesses, even if he loses. Even as good as John played comparable to Grossman last week, his words on feeling the pain of the loss really went a long way. So Sunday I will back him 100%. He will make mistakes and he will probably need to get the rust out, but I will back him entirely, just as I did when I trusted Shanny with the Rex decision.

Yeah ..
with Rex I feel like his off field presence is, “we screwed up, but it wasn’t all me, and so we just have to improve”. I for one am not a fan of the ‘we just have to play better’ answer that a lot of quarterbacks give. That’s me personally though I know its a media sports standard response haha.
John does a great job explaining passes he missed and why he thinks they missed. He makes no excuses for his play. That I can stand behind.
I made a similar comment yesterday
I have really admired the way John Beck carries himself over the way Rex Grossman operates. I don’t believe that it is a coincidence that Rex’s performance’s deteriorated with more wins because he is known to get an inflated ego. When he does that he tries to take on too much and we get games like Sunday.
I’m support Beck 110% and I am excited to see him excel.

A couple of things have really turned me against Rex
I never wanted the guy but he was our starter and I supported that. But he was quoted as saying that other than the Iggles game he has played well. Even though he has gotten worse every week since week one. If you can’t recognize that you need to sit in the corner.
Second he threw Fred under the bus. Whether or not Fred messed up I still want a QB/ team leader that says it was on me. Can’t recall Brady, Manning, Aikman, Young, Montana, or other great ones doing that. Maybe I’m wrong but I don’t recall.
Last but not least in his press conference on Sunday after he stunk up the place someone asked him about the run offense not working and that it wasn’t helping him out. His response was I don’t know anything about the run offense. You are the starting QB. Isn’t that your job to recognize the defensive fronts and audible to the right pass or run play?
I think we see a type of game plan like San Fran is doing with Alex Smith. Ball control, short passes, limit mistake type foortball.

I think its vitally important that the QB at least make the defense respect the pass. I thought Grossman gave the best chance at that, but its just clear he physically cannot make the throws. Beck’s arm isn’t anything special either, but its clearly better than Grossman so they at least have a better chance of completing those throws. I doubt Kyle dials down the aggressiveness.
ATL - I don't think it's true that Rex "physically cannot make the throws"
He sometimes underthrows, but it’s not because of lack of arm strength.

I honestly felt that his last 2 interceptions had considerable velocity on them, just to the wrong team.

You'll be drinking at your own party then
If Beck plays smart, our offense will improve and our defense will continue playing well and we WILL NOT go on such a losing streak
Now...
Cut Rex, so there’s no chance of him coming back even if Beck sucks, and bring in Marc Bulger and JaWalrus Russell to compete for the backup job. SUPERBOWL !!!!
My two cents
We will be better With Beck under center because he offers another issue for defenses to deal with. When he scrambled for the first down, the Eagles looked over their shoulders and said, “what, wait, WTF just happened? He ran?” defenses knew Rex was going to sit in the pocket and if he was pressured he would make mistakes. They won’t have the luxury of sitting back on Beck, he has the potential to hurt defenses if he needs too. I got the feeling defenses were in our huddle or at least had the play before the ball was snapped with Rex. Maybe I’m wrong, maybe not, we’ll find out Sunday.
Agreed
It throws a whole new wrinkle in your offense when your QB can run for a few yards. Rex really put the offense at a disadvantage when compared to most every other NFL team, most of which have QBs who can move and run.
The question is: Will Beck be able to exploit this wrinkle to freeze linebackers and confuse secondaries, which can lead to big plays? We shall see
And I think Mike kind of has to stick with him now.....
and I hope he does. Even if he is able to realize his potential, it’s going to take him a minute. I am much more curious about he does in the last 4 games than the next 4.
