You should apologize for knowing absolutely nothing about team sports and team dynamics. If you think that benching a guy going into the bye who is the QB of a 1st place team with only 1 loss you are clueless. Nobody loves Rex Grossman but some of us, the ones who understand how teams work, know that the team was behind Rex. He played better in preseason than John Beck. To think that there wouldn’t have been a mutiny by the offensive players if Shanny benches the guy that EARNED the starting job you are insane. Now that Rex clearly cost us a chance at winning a game Shanny had the ability to start Beck if he chooses, and i am sure he will. You are judging Rex vs Beck in a vacuum where only their Madden score matters. There are 51 other men on the team and to yank a QB because he threw 1 or 2 picks in a win is ridiculous. You need to look at it from the head coaches position. What if Shanny would have taken your “expert” advice. Then lets suppose Beck comes out and throws a couple pickles. What then? Does the coach say “oh i was just kidding” and send Rex back in the game. How does the coaching staff look then to the players?

Rex threw 4 INTs and Beck nearly brought us back, I know nothing. Sure dude...LOL

Like I’ve said a thousand times, we’ve won 3 game IN SPITE OF REX. Not because of him. He should’ve been benched during the bye and this game proved my point. Nuff said.

way to not address any points in my comments. it’s cool though, i know when you play madden and win all those superbowls team chemistry and team dynamics don’t come into play. i’m shocked the Skins haven’t benched Shanny for you. make sure your phone is turned on after you just demonstrated your depth of football knowledge.

Keep making Madden comments if it makes you feel better.

Rex has always sucked. He was never a leader of this team and never will be. Shanny made his decision 3 quarters too late. The results question your knowledge of football – not mine.

Beck 'bringing' us back is laughable

Beck could have easily turned the ball over 3-4 times if he played all game as well. I’m not arguing for Rex, just saying that turning the team over to Beck doesn’t really matter in the win column.

okay but you are basing it on a small sample size against an Eagles defense that was in more of a prevent mode

If Beck started the game it is probably a loss just as well. This is John Beck, not John Elway.

honestly, how can we say that? He moved the ball and none of his passes came close to being int’ed. I’ve been behind the coaches decisions but Rex sucks and we keep telling ourselves that Beck is worse.
What’s that phrase? That’s why they play the game. Well, lets give Beck a few games before we throw him to the wolves.

Beck didn't exactly 'move the ball'

Most of his yards came from screens, and he missed on a number of easy passes.

I don’t mind the switch, I mind everyone thinking that we’d win that game if Beck was playing. With Beck playing a 1,000 different scenarios could have occurred.

I think you stated that better this time.

Just saying we can’t assume he would have lost or won with the one quarter he played but the truth is, he got us closer than Rex had in the 3 quarters he played.. And those misses were better than int’s.

by mkjo on Oct 17, 2011 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I really dont think...

you can go into the bye week benching Rex either, though I will say that you give him maybe one or two possessions after the first half of the Eagles game to see if he has any motivation to “come back” and win it. So I think for the most part they made the right call letting Rex try again through the third (maybe a little longer than I liked haha). That said, in the hypothetical situation where Beck starts 3rd quarter, I honestly believe we could have stood a better chance, with our defense holding as well as it did second half. Dynamics are important and so I think you’re right that you don’t want to pull a QB unless you absolutely have to in regards to the rest of the team, but performance-wise in a divisional game and especially after that last INT…. he’s got to sit out and calm down. His passing was degrading week to week since the NYG game, and in a system where neither QB is Elite, the wild card QB has to be a factor. I personally liked Beck from the start. He was less productive in preseason, but not by much. I think our team will stand behind anyone who shows they can get the ball up the field, whether its Beck or Rex.

by Jpage0024 on Oct 17, 2011 9:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah you can have a reasonable debate about pulling Rex after his 3rd INT of the game. I would never argue that you have to wait until the 4th INT. I like Beck as well and Shanny gave him every opportunity to show up in preseason and training camp and win the starting job. That didn’t happen. The people calling for benching Rex in the bye week are pretending the Beck was decent in the preseason and poor mean Shanny just loves Rex and wants him to be the QB win or lose. Shannahan has no love for ANY player and will put the guy in that he thinks give him the best chance to win. This situation is no different.

I’ve consistently said that BOTH QBs can’t throw, but one has legs – and I’ll take the one with legs. Anyone who thinks Rex shouldn’t have been benched during the bye suffers from short term memory loss and has forgotten how terrible he played the past three games before Philthy.

I'm curious what everyone else thinks about...

On the very first drive (Eagles 3 and out), Celek caught the ball kind of awkwardly on his head, then he got hit and the ball came out. Did anyone else think that this was a fumble? As awkwardly as he had the ball it did seem as if he had full possession. This would of given the Skins that ball at the Eagles 20 to start the game.

Its really tough to challenge that early, but just was curious what everyone else thought. I’m also not too sure the last Rex INT was actually an INT. Fox never really showed a good angle of a replay, so it very well could of been a pick.

Vick was outside the hashes.

I believe that when the Qb is in-between the hashes, he is still “in the pocket” so unfortunately he was just outside of the left hashes and he threw it at the .5 yardline. (so he was not in the endzone he threw it). Gosh, but was soo close to calling it, in favor of us.

by Chilliewil on Oct 17, 2011 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions

it's not the hashes that matter, but rather the tackle box

I haven’t seen the replay so I can’t say for sure whether it was a good call or not. Draw a line straight back from the LT and that is where vick had to get past.

It wasn't bullshit, it was helmet to helmet. The same way it was with Pettis two weeks before.

The rule may be bullshit, but the actual call isn’t. At some point we need to stop whining about helmet to helmet rules and actually adapt. It’s pretty clear you can’t touch the QB, so just don’t do it.

There is a difference between incidental helmet contact

And launching yourself at them like a battering ram. What would you call that play outside the endzone?

by willster on Oct 17, 2011 9:02 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't know why people don't get this, but it doesn't matter if it's incidental.

If you hit the quarterback with your helmet against his helmets you’re going to get a penalty every time, get over it. You can get away with a little more at other positions, but not on the QB.

Especially when Orakpo is half a foot taller than Vick. Its a tough pill to swallow, and the hits we were laying down looked like good football players. But the fact of the matter is, in today’s NFL w/ uber-QB protection it is a penalty.

I don’t argue the flag…..I don’t like it, but it is what it is. What about int. grounding? If that was the case it should have been a do-over, and not 15 and a 1st. Big difference.

I don't know, it was very close either way. Pocket is so loosely defined by refs.
What about int. grounding?

I’m not so sure it would of been a “do-over”. If it was intentional grounding then it should of still been a safety regardless of our penalty, right? I wouldn’t think they just simply offset b/c it’s a scoring play.

Could be wrong though, kind of a strange situation.

I really don't know either....

I can’t recall any precedence, but I also don’t recall any play (scoring or not) that wasn’t a do-over because of offsetting penalties. I don’t really have any desire to harp on it. It was very early in the game and should have been overcome……the fact that they turned around and did drove right down the field on the next drive as well kind of nullifies any “game-changing” implications.

Yeah

grounding or not, it didn’t lose the game for us. If defense had played as hard as the second half, this play wouldn’t have mattered.

by Jpage0024 on Oct 17, 2011 9:58 AM EDT up reply actions

Considering how physical the game of football is...

They need to modify the helmets if any helmet contact is going to be automatically flagged. Put some foam padding on the outside, I don’t care what they do. But this crap where any incidental helmet contact lets the refs throw a bail out flag needs to stop. If it’s going to be called every single time (which it isn’t, the refs still pick and choose when they call it) then our defense needs to start making them legitimate headshots. If you are going to get flagged, you might as well make sure the QB feels it.

Couple of thoughts:
  • If you watch the game tape then watch Herremans the whole game, the guy could of been held for holding about 20 times. I was watching the game with friends, a couple of which were Eagles fans and they were just laughing, it was ridiculous.
  • On Celek’s TD, Rocky couldn’t physically move b/c of holding.
  • Trent Williams need to chill the F out, the guy has started fights in the first quarter of two games now.

as soon as the ball is tipped a defender can knock a receiver to the ground and sit on him if he wants to. As long as it isn’t unnecessary roughness (which it wasn’t) it is a legal play.

An Eagle chopped Kory and Trent was defending his player. He is supposed to do that and i would think less of him if he didn’t . I bet you the coaching staff will take the 15 yard penalty in that situation. You can’t use hindsight and judge the play as a result of what happens on the drive. If we scored on that drive everyone would be saying how great Trent was for sticking up for his teammates.

I agree...

The thing that really strikes me about John Beck is that when you listen to the post game interviews he sounds like a quarterback. Talent is weak in Grossman and Beck, however when it comes down to it I’d rather have a guy who spends every second with that playbook on the sidelines who is ready and willing to jump into a situation like that and essentially turn it around. Sure Beck looked rusty, but who wouldn’t when you don’t get full reps in practice. The guy was a bright spot in the off season, he knows how to land a pass arguably better than Grossman as far as I saw Sunday, and he really really wants to succeed. He doesn’t make excuses, he explains rather how he would like to make those passes better. Rex sounds like an out of breath fat kid who quite frankly put me to sleep post-game. How do you not give John Beck a chance against Carolina after what he was able to do in one quarter, that Rex couldn’t do in three? We chanted and Shanny must have heard us. I honestly believe that given 2 quarters it’s not a stretch to believe that John Beck could have pulled us into a win.

Why I want Beck to start next week:

Mobility, I don’t have any statistics to back this up, but when Beck was in it seemed like we ran the bootleg way more than we are right now. I think that Becks mobility with a healthy amount of bootlegs, play right into the strength of our OL. It gets the defensive line & Backers, moving horizontally. Which lets our O-line do what they do best, pull and hit people on the move. This also helps our run game cause the DL and Linebackers have to respect the qb moving from the pocket which means they can’t tee off and bull rush every play again playing into the strength of our Oline. And Finally, moving the pocket with a mobile qb and athletic linemen extends the play which gives our undersized yet speedy receivers enough time to break coverage.

I don’t think Beck is a great qb or even a better qb than grossman, I simply think he fits this offense better and is a better leader. I think with Beck in there we will see lots more bootlegs, play action and screen passes. I think we will see our RB’s numbers go up and our pass attempts as well as turnovers go down.

by skinsfan28 on Oct 17, 2011 9:16 AM EDT reply actions

It will definitely be interesting to see. Beck is certainly a wild card.

Will also be interesting to see how defenses adjust if they have time to adjust to Beck. I wouldn’t be surprised if we have no idea who the QB is going on Sunday.

That being said, I really like Beck and liked him in preseason. He got the ball out quicker than Grossman and his throws have moe zip, Grossman really hangs it out there giving the defenders a chance to get it.

Not to mention he can take off running if everyone is covered, and at least get positive yards instead of giving it up.

If Beck starts, Terence Austin should play every play

Beck’s been throwing to Austin for the past year and you can clearly see they are comfortable with each other. You can even see that in the pre-season games. Austin and ‘Tana should take turns being the ’hot’ receiver. Gaffney can be third and AA fourth, until they get used to Beck’s throws.

I think it helps, but I also think the Bills are tough

Buffalo has scored fewer than 30 points just twice this year (both losses, but still over 20 points). So they are going to move the ball, and I don’t know if we can score enough to match them. Sure our defense could keep them in the 20 range again, but are we going to score more than 20 points??

but why??

I don’t mind if you pick the Redskins to win…but how can you predict that this team scores 31 points week in week out? They don’t have 31 in the last two weeks combined

No reason.

It’s just a number I like.

So if we do ever score 31

Will you start predicting that we put up 48 on someone (hopefully Dallas)?

Playing in Carolina will be easy.

Panthers fans are the biggest fairweather losers the world has ever produced. Not to mention they steal local coverage from the Skins here in NC.

Redskins are the playing the Giants, oh well, we’ll televise Panthers vs. Cardinals…terrible.

Anyway, the Redskins will have a lot of oppurtunities against a bad secondary and linebacking group.

Let’s see what Beck can do.

I'm not optimistic about Beck

Grossman lost the job yesterday. Beck hasn’t earned anything.

The only way I see a major improvement is if Beck’s speed allows us to run a lot of bootleg and stretch plays that Grossman lacks the speed for.

What happened to our run team?

I know that key blockers for our run defense we’re gone, but I was kinda surprised to hear afterwards that only 14 attempts in a full 60 minute football game? Is that an accurate stat? it was something like 14 for 60 something yards total all day? Anyone know the actual numbers off hand?

by Jpage0024 on Oct 17, 2011 10:20 AM EDT reply actions

Look at the time of possession

especially in the first half. Our offense barely even had the ball. Then the left side of our line got mangled up.

by SkinsOsTerps on Oct 17, 2011 10:26 AM EDT up reply actions

True.

Being at the games caught up in the excitement, its hard to gauge and keep track.

by run defense...

I mean those that defend and block for our RBs. my bad haha

My master plan is working. We’re already talking about something other than QBs.

IMO,

you are not allowed to put blame on anyone but yourself after a game you had 4 INT’s. I don’t care if they were his fault or not. How is he gonna say that last one he thought Jabar was gonna come back and get it? He was completely behind the defender, he had no chance on that. That was 100% a stupid decision and that ball never should’ve left Rex’s hands. Stop making dumb decisions and blaming it on other people. That annoyed me after the game.

by rachel216 on Oct 17, 2011 1:53 PM EDT reply actions

I knew rolling left the way Grossman did

was an int before he ever threw it. He doesn’t have the arm. Claiming it was Gaffneys fault is complete bs.The strange part was, Gaffney was open, but he couldn’t get it to him. For a QB who has played only one complete NFL season as a starter, he really over rates himself. He is a career back up QB.

by hambonejackson on Oct 17, 2011 2:19 PM EDT reply actions

He didn't really blame Gaffney

He could have pulled up so he could throw it longer to Gaffney. Or he could have run it.

Trent Williams observation

After reading Trent’s quote about Lichtensteiger getting taken out by a dirty play, I recalled how angry I was at the play when an Eagle defender rolled up on Trent’s leg. I was thinking nothing else but it was intentional. It seemed like the defenders eyes were directly fixated on Trent’s leg and that he could have easily prevented the contact but didn’t. Perhaps there was an organized intent by the Eagles. Perhaps someone would like to review the tape and provide their opinion.

by TheSportsManager on Oct 17, 2011 3:41 PM EDT reply actions

My first thought when I saw the replay as well.

It looked like an intentional injury to Trent.

Is that something the league reviews? I want to see some accountability like fines and a frickin’ congressional hearing. I’m still pissed. We are genuinely screwed without those guys.

Can someone say thanks, but no thanks to Riggins?

I know Riggo is a football god, but sometimes I get tired of hearing him chime in at the wrong times.
