Does anybody else miss Colt Brennan?

I might be crazy in thinking this, but I think the Redskins really missed out on this guy. I was excited when he was brought here. I saw a lot of potential in him, but it just seems as though the NFL is ignoring him because of the stereotypes that have been stamped on him by the media, such as "system quarterback." And yet, to be honest, I cannot think of a "great" quarterback who did not play in a "system." All of the Tom Bradys (who was also overlooked coming out of college and needed an injury to get playing time), Peyton Mannings, Dan Marinos, etc. have or had an offense dedicated to the passing game and spreading the ball out to the wide receivers. I am in no way saying that Brennan is at these guys' level now. All I am saying is that under an offensive coordinator such as Mike Martz, I would be very confident with Brennan as quarterback. Just look at what he and Kurt Warner, another initially overlooked and side-armed gunslinger, did with the Rams! Perhaps Colt was just not a good fit in Washington, where more prototypical (and boring) quarterbacks are more welcomed. Anyways, what do you guys think? I mean, come on, it would have been interesting to see him start an end-of-the-season game instead of Grossman, right?

I miss Colt Brennan

about as much as I miss the multiple concussions I had playing football

Another spread offense casualty

Don’t know why when a lot of NFL teams run spread formations that the league in general looks down its nose at spread offense QBs. The prevalent offense in college these days is the spread and the highest reated QBs in the upcoming draft run…you guessed it …the spread. Cam Newton, Heisman trophy winner, is another version of Tim Tebow, just faster on his feet. Part of Colt’s problem is his school never played too many teams of note and when he did in the bowl game he got slaughtered. So running up great stats against the little sisters of the poor won’t cut it in the NFL. Whatever…he had a shot, with a bad coach and lost out. Now he’s injured seriously and probably out of the league for good.

I always wanted him to be given a chance

but he couldn’t beat out Jason Campbell, or get any significant playing time, in two situations – so a lot of knowledgeable people must have decided that he didn’t have the necessary skills – things like arm strength, accuracy, mobility, vision, knowledge of the system, etc. He might be almost as good as Rex in fundamentals, but Rex does, supposedly, know the system. I liked him because I thought he might be a “winner”, or “gamer” – the kind of guy who could make plays and figure out a way to win, and be a natural leader. If that was the case, he might have been better than Jason. But the coaches decided he wasn’t close enough to give him a shot. And since he doesn’t know the current system at all, its hard to see that he’d have any chance against Rex. So I’d guess that if he wants to keep playing football, he’s going to have to go to some other league and develop his skills and build a resume. Good luck, Colt – we love you man!

I wasn't convinced

that leaving Colt on the bench was a mistake when Zorn was here. But after Shanny came in and cut him almost immediately, I gave up hope. One of the biggest problems was Colt kept getting hurt… and wasn’t even playing! He had multiple hip surgeries without ever playing a regular season down.

But as far as his college career, Colt Brennan was pure excitement. I loved watching Hawaii football when he was there and Colt managed to break multiple records during his collegiate career:

  • Second all-time in most career touchdowns responsible for (146). Achieved November 23, 2007.
  • NCAA record for most 400 yard games (20). Achieved in 2007.
  • Tied NCAA record for most career touchdown passes by a quarterback-receiver combination (39 to Davone Bess). Achieved November 23, 2007.
  • NCAA single-season record for most touchdown passes, achieved in 2006 (58)
  • NCAA two-season record for most touchdown passes, (96, achieved 2006-2007)
  • NCAA record for passing efficiency (season), posting a 186.0 mark in 2006
  • NCAA record for most points responsible for (season) with 385. (2006)
  • NCAA record for highest pass completion percentage (70.4%).

Problem is he broke most of Timmy Chang's records, totally the system.

And everyone knows all those WAC defensive backs were always hungover from partying in Hawaii.

by Parks Smith on Jan 10, 2011 8:52 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, totally the system.

Peewee Herman could have just as easily broken those records…

Come on, man. Give the kid SOME credit.

No he was a great WAC QB, I'll give him credit for that...

but it was clearly the system, like I said most of the records he broke were from his predecessor Timmy Chang.

Chang completed 1,388 of 2,436 passes (57.0 percent) for 17,072 yards and 117 touchdowns, breaking the old NCAA Division I-A all-time records of 1,231 completions in 1,883 attempts by Kliff Kingsbury of Texas Tech University (1999-2002) and 15,031 yards by Ty Detmer of Brigham Young University (1989-91). Chang participated in 2,587 plays, breaking the old NCAA career record of 2,156 by Kingsbury. Chang’s 16,910 yards in total offense broke the previous NCAA record of 14,465 by Detmer. Chang also had six rushing touchdowns and was a four time All-Western Athletic Conference selection.

June Jones’s offense at Hawaii was gimmicky to say the least and I wouldn’t be surprised if some other guy at SMU or wherever the Mad West Texas Scientist (Mike Leach) breaks Colts records soon. I lost respect for Colt a long time ago when he was kicked off the team at Colorado. Those Hawaii teams were fun to watch at midnight and I was hammered at college.

Thanks everybody

Haha, I guess you guys disagree. Thanks for the replies. I was just curious and am always glad to hear an honest, opposing opinion. I guess the point of my post was to say that you can never count anybody out, even if they are seemingly done. That is why I mentioned Kurt Warner, because at one point fairly early on in his career he had given up and was out of the league bagging groceries for a living until he got a stroke of luck opportunity. Anyways, thanks again. Go ’Skins! I hope the quarterback situation is finally fixed up in Washington soon.

He even sucked playing Romo....

on Cooley’s blog!

Twas a dark and stormy night when Tony Romo turned his key...
He was scared about the prospect of going back to D.C.
When he entered his room he saw some crutches wrapped in a bow...
Attached with a note that said "you’ll need these... signed...Brian Orakpo" (thanks skinsfan28)
