#10 Pick Should Be a QB - By The Numbers

(via - http://assets.espn.go.com/media/motion/2010/0427/DM_100427_NFL_2011Draft_REDO.jpg)

There has been a lot of talk suggesting that the Redskins should not draft a QB with the 10th overall pick in this years draft, that we should instead draft an offensive lineman. While the Redskins needs at O-Line are obvious, more important IMO is a potential franchise QB; let’s all remember, Rex Grossman and John Beck may be the only 2 QB’s on our roster come the regular season if we do not draft a QB. Let’s also remember that there are some pretty good O-Line Free Agents this year (http://www.hogshaven.com/2011/1/12/1930446/detailed-look-at-2011-ufa-zone-blocking-offensive-linemen).

But let’s go to the numbers:

If 37% of current Franchise QB's (I use the term loosely for Alex Smith, Jason Campbell, and Vince Young) are Top 10 picks, then why not select one this year? The goal is for the Redskins to NOT be selecting in the top 20 for a good long time. If this is to be the last year we select in the Top 10, then a QB might actually be a good idea.

Since 1998 there have been 14 1st Round Pick that were busts (7 of those were outside of the Top 10) [JaMarcus Russell, Matt Lienart,  David Carr, Joey Harrington, Akili Smith, Tim Couch, Ryan Leaf]
There have been no QB's selected in the 1st Round since 2007 who are not currently their Franchises QB [Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Josh Freeman, Mark Sanchez, Matthew Stafford, Sam Bradford, Tim Tebow (???)]

With regards to O-Line, let's take a look at the New England Patriots O-Line. I think anyone (blogger, NFL analyst, player, etc.) would agree that if not Top 3 O-Line in the league, the Patriots are at least Top 10. Their line is made up as follows:

Building a top flight O-Line does not HAVE to be done with 1st Round picks.

For the sake of argument based on some feedback, top O-Line's....ZERO 1st Round Picks

Colts

RT: Diem – 4th Round

RG: Pollak – 2nd Round

C: Staurday – FA (Originally - Undrafted FA signed by B-mor)

RG: DeVan – FA (Originally - Undrafted FA signed by Redskins, then Jets, Jets practice squad, then Arena League)

RT: Johnson 6th Round

Giants

RT: McKenzie 3rd Round

RG: Snee – 2nd Round

C: O’Hara – Undrafted FA

LG: Seubert – Rookie FA

LT: Diehl – 5th Round
