I HIGHLY recommend Hogs Haven devotees get this book. More information here. It is an excellent view of football including how organizations work, evaluate players, individual positions, schemes and more. From the perspective of a guy that has been around forever and seen it all. If you've heard him on Sirius, you know what I mean. More after the jump...
I'm about 1/2 way through and what is most striking so far is that Kirwan respects the intelligence and thirst for knowledge of the fan, conveying a large amount of complex information that enhances your understanding of the game, but in a way that completely comprehensible. There's a fine line between 'explaining' and 'dumbing down' and he walks it well.
In showing you how to understand and 'diagnose' what the offense and defense are trying to do, what play is likely to be called/executed and how to determine why one succeeds or fails, Kirwan covers personnel groupings (e.g. "21" - 2 RB, 1 TE, 2 WR), offensive and defensive schemes, matchups, blocking, play design, audibles, the pre-snap read and on and on. A fantastic amount of information clearly and concisely delivered to enhance your experience of the game.
I could go on and on about how things in the book provide insight into the trials and tribulations of the Skins' organization, personnel and on the field performance, but you'll get it when you read the book. Elevate your understanding and help raise discourse about the sport and buy this book now!
