Curious about this trade scenario

Let's say we were to trade Albert to the titans for a 3rd and 6th round pick. That means we are going into next years draft with almost all our picks intact more or less with a 1, 2, 3, possibly two 5's, two 6's, and a 7. Obviously I would be thrilled with having our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd rd picks, however it makes me think harder about trading for Vincent Jackson. I know the asking price is a 2nd rounder and maybe a 6th rounder but I am tempted because the guy is coming off great back to back year and is only 27 and is about  to his prime. He would be a monster addition and give our offense much more credibility. The only part that really makes me hesitate is VJ's extension wishes, no chance im paying him Brandon Marshall money but at the same time I cannot tell if he is making those demands to San Diego bc he wants out or if he actually feels thats his worth. With VJ, and Santana as your starters and Armstrong in the slot (I think Armstrong is perfect for the slot) along with your two tight end sets with McNabb at QB plus a much improved O-line we could do serious damage. VJ's impact makes a huge difference, which is crazy because it's just 1 player but that's how weak our WR corps looks right now. I think I would make that deal for Vj if a trade for AH goes through. The only thing that makes me hesitate is the contract thing. What do you guys think

I think it's crazy to devote more resources to WR before addressing our interior OL

where we need THREE starters, not one.

And that doesn’t even address our lack of depth.

This team has spent a decade investing in skill position players, we need to focus on the OL.

Much like I want my girlfriend to have double D’s, a 26 inch waist, and a six-figure salary. But I’m still content to settle for someone who likes to give morning head.

Thank you for making my day…

They'll both need to be replaced soon

and even now, neither are much above average, if that.

If we had one stud OG that might make it ok to start guys like Dock & Rabach, but the entire interior of our line is average or worse, and old.

Now is when you draft to replace them, not devote more resources to skill positions and then be caught with your pants down like we were last year.

Sure. How about this:

Replacing our mediocre starters at G/C/G is more urgent than WR.

All three will need to be replaced sooner rather than later.

O-line first

Agree. I’ve been saying that there is no depth, but the fact is, the starters aren’t that great either. The guards and center are all solid pros, but none are really top quality. The group is average at best. And at tackle, one is a rookie and one is coming off a bad injury. Maybe they’ll all stay healthy and adapt very well to Shanahan’s system and be really effective, but it’s risky to rely on that. I think we need a top quality RG so that Hicks can back up the tackles (and guards). That great need (caused by the loss of BMW and slow development of Capers) is the only reason I’d consider trading Haynesworth. We have limited trade bait – AH, Carter, Jarmon – and can’t afford to use it on a WR until we fix the O-line. By the way, Indy just cut an Ol (Oguh?) but he has an injury, so I don’t know if he can play.

The usual sequence on an injured player.

First waived, second when not claimed placed on injured reserve (IR) and there by out for the season.

Agree , but

Definitely OL’s…but cant we ALSO go after a big WR even if its not VJ (preferred) .A good wr that is 6’4-5 definitely adds another dynamic to our passing game.

Why trade for VJ?

He’ll be on the open market next year. I mean he is already missing atleast 3 games(I think he might have to miss additional because of weird contract holdout stuff might be wrong), Who knows what shape he’ll be in, and has never seen our playbook. Is trading valuable picks worth it for what will be a partial season that could very well be underwhelming as he gets in shape and learns the plays? If this was 4-5 weeks ago I might feel differently.

Still I agree with Smuts about the O-line, though I think Dock is slightly above average but way more effective as a pass blocker. Rabach and Hicks are below average. Our whole O-line is basically 1 injury away from being horrible again. I’d also add NT to the list, potentially LB(All of them are in a new system, Fletch is getting older, Rocky is a FA and Carter won’t be here), and honestly I’d like to draft a QB to groom sooner rather than later and “Franchise QB’s” come predominantly in the first 32 picks. I’d rather save the picks and get cheaper guys at one of those positions than trade good picks and give out a mega contract especially with huge deals assuredly coming McNabb and Brown’s way and retaining or replacing Carlos and Rocky might cost a pretty penny next summer.

Here we go again!

Everyone keeps complaining about the offensive line; saying were old, and assuming we need a 24 year old pro bowler at every position. Well, it aint gonna happen that way.

Again, for those of you who are hard of hearing, or just can’t read:
2010 O-line additions:
LT – Trent Williams (Drafted #4 in Rd1)
LG – Dock (Has been a quality starter for last 7 years) was given the highest contract for a G in NFL history 3 years ago.
C – Rabach (was extended by Redskins in 2010, obiviously Shanny and Chris Forester, who know a lot more about football than we do, think he is still a good C.
RG – Hicks (A definite upgrade to the G’s we had last year)
RT – Brown (A multiple pro-bowler who is still in his prime) if he is fully healthy, this might be the biggest move of the offseason

Draft – Cook and Capers – Both on practice squad. Cook looks like he could be ready later this season to contribute if needed. Either way, a year on the practice squad will do both these players some good.

On the other side of this equasion: WR’s

Moss – Old, and has lost a step
Galloway – our #2, are you serious?
Armstrong – Never played a meaningful down in the NFL
Thomas – What have you done for me lately?
Williams – Seriously???
Banks – Return Specialist

See a problem here??

If you think we can neglect our WR corps, your crazy. Moss will be even older next year, and certainly isn’t getting better. Galloway will be receiving Medicare benefits next year, and should require a walker just to use the bathroom. Thomas and Armstrong; well, their not scaring opposing defenses. Banks, he’s a wild card.

Maybe some people on here need to rethink what they post!!!!!!!!!!

Some of the shit your saying just shows you have no idea about this team.

tiller

I think you officially have a “cause”

I agree with you 100%. Coming out of 2009, we desperately needed to focus on the O-line. Not only that, but we desperately needed depth because we knew that Heyer was weak, Thomas was going to get hurt, and Williams was a wash-out.

Now it has jumped the shark. The line this year is deeper, younger, more talented, and less injury-prone. The starting 5 could be very good, and the backups are decent. There aren’t many components on this team with a brighter outlook than our front 5.

Now we need something for them to block FOR. Our QB, RBs, and WRs are old, slow, and injury prone, and the young guys in the mix have low upside. The guys on this board calling for MORE offensive line work have just gotten too used to sounding that trumpet. You have to look at the whole team.

Tiller - very persuasive

We are definitely weak at WR. Could be that: O-line – OK but no depth. WR – weak starters, also no depth. I know you rate Heyer stronger than many on HH. And, after all, there might not be any injuries to the O-line.

by Donnio1234 on Sep 10, 2010 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Well....

we’ve certainly proven we do not know how to draft a WR. Why not get a proven one in VJ this year for the draft pick we are likely to waste getting a WR next year who will take another 2 yrs to prove himself?

Also, WR’s are not as coveted as most positions and not many go in the 1st round. We can always use our 1st or 2nd round pick for a near-Trent Williams and pick up a top WR prospect in the 3rd or 4th.

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

by Scott E on Sep 10, 2010 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

multiple things you listed are kinda irrelevant to the discussion
LG – Dock (Has been a quality starter for last 7 years) was given the highest contract for a G in NFL history 3 years ago.

And the contract was roundly ridiculed by anyone with half a brain.

C – Rabach (was extended by Redskins in 2010, obiviously Shanny and Chris Forester, who know a lot more about football than we do, think he is still a good C.

He was resigned. Who knows if that’s b/c they love him, or they know he was the only available option?

RG – Hicks (A definite upgrade to the G’s we had last year)

Pretty sure I would be an upgrade at the position too.

Cook & Capers aren’t even worth mentioning when it comes to finding starters in the next 12-18 months.

Moss will be even older next year, and certainly isn’t getting better.

And yet he’s younger than Hicks & Rabach, and only 1 year older than Dockery.

Look, for a team that needs as much youth as ours does, I think OL is more important than WR corps.

Secondly, I believe that Santana + those warm bodies are adequate. I think we are playing with fire by assuming that Dock/Rabach/Hicks will be adequate any time after, say, week 8 or the beginning of next year.

We can make the playoffs with Moss & Co. If Hicks plays like the back up he’s been, or Rabach shows his age, or Jamaal Brown never gets healthy, or TW busts, or a single one of those guys gets hurt, it could tank the whole season.

Losing Santana would be a blow, but it wouldn’t tank our season. Both McNabb & Shanahan have won with mediocre WRs before, as have other teams.

In 2009 we saw what happens when you have no plan in place to replace fallen/aging linemen. And here were are, staring down the same exact situation again.

This time let’s be prepared.

I'm not saying our O-line is perfect

it’s not.

But if you think we can get by with “those warm bodies”, your obviously not seeing the same team that most of us are seeing.

Your comment on Santana Moss being younger than Hicks and Rabach makes no point to your arguement what so ever. O-linemen can still be in their prime well into their 30’s; wide recievers on the other hand start to decline when they are in their 30"s.

If we continue to ignore our skill positions(QB, WR, RB) with much needed youth, we will be in bigger trouble than we last year with a makeshift o-line.

Don't ever let failure get you down. Remember, a very successful major league hitter failes 70% of the time.

We simply disagree:
If we continue to ignore our skill positions(QB, WR, RB) with much needed youth, we will be in bigger trouble than we last year with a makeshift o-line

We have current/future needs at pretty much all offensive positions, and I personally would vote to devote most resources to OL for the time being. This includes using next year’s 2nd round pick on a drafted OL, not Vincent Jackson or even a drafted WR.

I think a good OL can prolong a QBs career, make average RBs look better, or let an offense be decent even with average WRs.

by smutsboy1 on Sep 11, 2010 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd agree with you 100% if...........

we had young guys at our skill positions.

How much longer can we prolong the careers of McNabb, Portis and Johnson?

I’m all for drafting a quality G/C, but just not with our first 2 picks. If we get a 3rd, I’m all for it.

1st – Jolio Jones WR (Alabama)
  or
        A.J. Green WR (Georgia)
or
       Michael Floyd WR (Notre Dame)

or
       Mark Ingram RB (Alabama)
or
       Ryan Williams RB (V Tech)

If we can nab one of these guys in the first, thwn maybe I’d be alright with a C/G in the 2nd.

I still think we need a stud RB and a Stud WR first though.

We may be weak at WR but....

did you forget he’s suspended for his second DUI for the first four games of the season? Not exactly a high character guy it seems besides thinking he deserves a whopper contract.

If the price is Right ...ONLY if the price is right!!

The Chargers are really wanting to get rid of VJ but only at or near their asking price.
But ,VJ has bagage and other concerning issues for a guy his age. That is a reason to lessen his value. He is also still young but not worth nearly as much as what he is being shopped for. Perhaps down the road he will go for less ! Otherwise NO
There are some other big wr’s that have recently been let go …maybe worth looking at.
Go Skins
