NFC East Roster Age Rankings: Redskins - Fine Wine or Rotten Grapes?

If you're a regular to Hogs Haven, then you certainly know JimmyK, one of the main writers at SBN's Eagles website, Bleeding Green Nation. He spent a bunch of time this weekend watching the Phillies' double-header and compiling one of the best compilation of age stats I've come across, which he posted on their site with some brief analysis. Big thanks to Jimmy for passing them along for us to use. Jimmy likes stats. Jimmy's going to analyze the stats now. Jimmy likes his chicken spicy!

Aite, I got my Seinfeld quotes out for the day. The Redskins are the oldest unit in practically every category across the board. The Average Age in Skill Players stands out most, which is perhaps why Brandon Banks earned a spot despite his several fumbles.

Skilled positions: Moss, Portis, McNabb, Galloway come to a whopping 33 average. If you include Cooley and Davis, then it drops to the 28.5 average - still the highest by a long shot (2 years) in our division.

OL Starters: Hey! The Redskins rank 2nd in the NFC East in this category, with the Giants and Cowboys over the 30 age mark.

Players over 30: Redskins have 14 players over 30...which is over 25% of the roster. Ouch. Quite amazing to see the Eagles only have 3 players (Giants 7, and Cowboys 9).

Glad to see the age # on the O-line...

I think our defense has a lot of outliers who will most likely be replaced in the next year or so and will start to be replaced by some of our younger players, hopefully without missing a beat. But seriously how man of these guys will be here next year?

I would guess for Grossman, LJ, Galloway, Kemo, Rabach, Hicks, Holliday, Sellars, Fletcher, Daniels, and Carter to be out of here in the next two years.

Looking at this, you can see…

1) We need a center in the pipeline
2) Please get another fullback
3) Keep drafting some guys on the o-line
4) I still want to see Jarmon and Orakpo on the d-line

I also hope the 3-4 scheme will make London easier to replace, I think Riley will be given the first shot… unless H.B. starts showing something.

Henson has demonstrated that he is very good as a pass rusher and special team player.

What is not widely known is his pass coverage skills. The two ILB in the 3-4 scheme might not have the same assignments.

But so did HB Blades…Blades experience I think vaulted him over Hen w/ the injury. If he had a surgery that obv wasn’t a sprain.

Not to get all "statty", but

I’d love to see a composite of average ages of SB winners v. opposing conference champions v. playoff contenders v. worst teams for the last, say ten years. I’d bet that you’d find the SB winners to be on the high end, but not the oldest teams. The playoff teams that didn’t go to the SB may be a tick younger but not that different than the bottom feeders. I guess it all comes back to good drafting, keeping the right players, and using FA’s as plug the hole with talent mercenaries

I will say that it depends on...

who the coach and G.M. were at particular times in history. The Green Bay Packers with Lombardi were no spring chickens but were well coached and got the best out of his veterans. The no name Miami Dolphins of the 70`s were young and all came into their prime at the same time and were well coached also as were the Steelers of that time. The 72 Redskins were an old team but were well coached and did not believe in rookies but eventually caught up to them since they had no draft picks to replensh the retiring players. Today the salary cap has a lot to do with who you can get to play.

But, like my girl Aaliyah said, “Age ain’t nothin’ but a number.” Weren’t the Saints and Patriots 2 of the oldest teams in the NFL last season (along with the Cardinals & Vikings)? Last year we all hoped the Cowboys would fall apart with their extremely old OL. But, they luckily stayed healthy and survived into the 2nd Round of the playoffs.

I just don’t think overall team age is a very strong variable for determining a team’s success.

In order to maintain a strong team (play off contender) it is likely that a team should have a good mix of players of all ages.

Yet 35 is getting old for a football player. A LS can last longer as can a few OB. I would agree that with your statement for a one season notion, but not for a span of years. “I just don’t think overall team age is a very strong variable for determining a team’s success.”
